engine is 0.6 litre. Mountfield oil, part number MX885, is available from any Mountfield stockist or B&Q store.
a Fill the fuel tank with UNLEADED petrol. Use only clean, fresh petrol - stale fuel may contain deposits that will
clog the carburettor. Do not overfill, the petrol level should be below the bottom of the fuel tank neck. (Figure 5).
a Ensure that the spark plug lead is securely connected to the spark plug. (Figure 6)
s Push the primer bulb firmly 5 times (Figure 5).

ADJUSTING THE HEIGHT OF CUT
Hand Propelled models have adjusters at each wheel; Self Propelled models have adjusters on each of the front
wheels, with a single one at the rear. The height of cut adjustment not only determines the length of the cut grass, it
also controls the airflow which carries clippings into the collector. If the discharge chute becomes blocked, increase
the airflow by raising the height of cut. To prevent blockages when cutting long, thick grass, set the adjustment to the
highest setting and cut the grass; then cut it again on a lower setting. |
To adjust the height of cut:
e stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug.
e put the mower on a level surface.
e adjust the cutting height levers by pulling outwards and moving into the required position (Figure 7).
e ensure that all of the levers are set at the same cutting height position.
Figure 7
BEFORE EACH USE |
e Always ensure that the mower is in a safe working condition. Inspect the cutter blade for damage; check
safety devices and guards; check that all nuts, bolts and screws are secure.
e Check the oil level as follows:
a) Remove the oil filler cap and wipe the dipstick clean (Figure 8).
b) Insert the dipstick into the filler neck and tighten down again. Remove the dipstick and check the oil level. Oil
should be at the FULL mark, (Oil capacity is about 20 fluid oz or 0.6 litre)
c) Ifthe oil level is low, add Mountfield oil part number MX855 or a SAE 10W-30 oil, to the upper limit on the dipstick.
NOTE: Change the oil after the first 5 hours of use as described in the engine Operator's Manual.
a Fill the fuel tank with unieaded petrol. Do not overfill; the petrol level should be below the bottom of the fuel
tank neck. |
PROBLEM SOLUTION

ENGINE
An engine manufacturer's Owner's Manual is supplied with your mower. Please read this, it provides detailed information
on engine operation and maintenance. Repair work other than routine maintenance, should be carried out by an
authorised dealer.
STORAGE
A little time spent on your mower after use will ensure many years of reliable mowing. To access the underside of the
cutter deck, ensure the spark plug lead is disconnected, then lift the front wheels by lowering the handle until it rests
on the ground. Do not tip the mower onto its side, as this will flood the air filter with oil.
AFTER EACH USE
e Remove any grass pulp from the underside of the cutter deck using a non-metallic instrument such ; as a piece
of wood. Take care not to damage the paintwork.
e Examine the cutter blade for any damage. A damaged blade may upset the balance of your mower and cause
excessive vibration, if in doubt refer to your dealer.
e Inspect the grass collector and clean it if necessary. If the mesh panels become clogged airflow will be
reduced and impair grass collection.
a
3
The handie can be folded down to reduce the amount of storage space required. Take care not to trap any of
the operating cables when folding or unfolding the handle.
Store the mower in a clean, dry area well away from any naked flames, sparks or heat source.
LONG TERM - If you are not using your mower for more than 28 days.
Give the machine a thorough clean, paying particular attention to the underside.
Polish the paintwork and touch up any chips or scratches.
Drain the fuel tank, as described in the engine Owners Manual, and run the engine until it stops. If fuel is left
in the engine for long periods it will evaporate and leave gum on sensitive carburettor parts.
Lubricate all moving parts.
At the end of the season, arrange for your dealer to carry out an annual service.

POWER RATINGS: The power ratings for an individual
engine model are initially developed by starting with
SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) code J1940
(Small Engine Power & Torque Rating Procedure) (Re-
vision 2002-05). Given both the wide array of products
on which our engines are placed, and the variety of en-
vironmental issues applicable to operating the equip-
ment, it may be that the engine you have purchased will
not deveiop the rated horsepower when usedin a piece
of power equipment (actual “on-site” power). This dif-
ference is due to a variety of factors including, but not
limited to, the following: differences in altitude, temper-
ature, barometric pressure, humidity, fuel, engine lu-
brication, maximum governed engine speed, individual
engine to engine variability, design of the particular
piece of power equipment, the manner in which the en-
gine is operated, engine run-in to reduce friction and
clean out of combustion chambers, adjustments to the
valves and carburetor, and other factors. The power
ratings may also be adjusted based on comparisons to
other similar engines utilized in similar applications,
and will therefore not necessarily match the values de-
rived using the foregoing codes.

Jil Recommendations (see sig. [7];
zngine shipped from Briggs & Stratton without oil,
3erore starting engine, fill with oil. Do not over-fill.
Use a high quality detergent oii classified “For Service
ЗЕ, 36, ЗН, SJ” or higher such as Briggs & Stratton
30W, Part Number 100005. Use no special additives
with recommended oils. Do not mix oil with gasoline.
Choose the SAE viscosity grade of oil from this chart
that matches the starting temperature anticipated
before the next oil change.
Fea Note: Synthetic oi meeting ILSAC
fal «8 ll GF-2, API certification mark and API ser-
Waders Vice symbol (shown at left) with “SJ/CF
воен, ENERGY CONSERVING” or higher, is an
ron E acceptable oil at all temperatures. Use of
i synthetic oii does not alter required oil
change intervals.
Air cooled engines run hotter than automotive
engines. The use of non-synthetic multi-viscosity
olls (5//-30, 10W-30, etc.)in temperatures above
40 F (49 C) will result in higher than normal oil
consumption. When using a multi-viscosity oil,
check oil level more frequently.
SAE 30 oil, if used beiow 40° F (4° C), will result
In hard starting and possible engine bore
damage due to inadequate lubrication.
Check oil level. (Oil capacity is about 20 0z. or 0.6 liter.)
Place engine level and clean around oil fill €.
Remove dipstick, wipe with clean cloth 8, insert and
tighten down again. Remove dipstick and check oil
level. Oil should be at FULL mark €.
If oil is required, add slowly. Tighten dipstick firmly
before starting engine.
Do not overfill. Overfilling with oil may cause:
1. Smoking,
2. Hard starting,
3. Spark plug fouling,
4. Oil saturation of air filter
Fuel Recommendations
Use clean, fresh, lead-free, regular gasoline with a
~ minimum of 77 octane. Leaded gasoline may be used if
it is commercially available and if unieaded is unavail-
able. Purchase fuel in quantity that can be used within
30 days. See Storage.
in U.S.A. leaded gasoline may not be used. Some
fuels, called oxygenated or reformulated gasolines, are
gasolines blended with alcohols or ethers. Excessive
amounts of these blends can damage the fuel system
or cause performance problems. If any undesirable
operating symptoms occur, use gasoline with a lower
percentage of aicohol or ether.
This engine is certified to operaie on gasoiine. Exhaust
Emission Control System: EM (Engine Modifications).
Do not use gasoline which contains Methanol. Do not
mix oil with gasoline.
For engine protection, we recommend using Briggs &
Stratton Fuel Stabilizer available from an Authorized
Briggs & Stratton Service Dealer.
Check fuel level.
Jefore refueling, allow
engine to cool 2 minutes.
Clean around fuel fill before removing cap to refuel. Fill
tank to approximately 1 inch beiow lowest portion of
neck to allow for fuel expansion. Be careful not to
