PROGRAM MODE OPERATION
CREATING A USER PROGRAM
Press the USER PROGRAM 1 or USER PROGRAM 2 button. A "U1" (USER 1) or "U2" (USER 2) will
appear for five seconds in the SEGMENT TIMER display to show which program you have selected.
The first step in creating a user program is to select a maximum speed setting for the program. The
maximum speed setting is preset at 3 miles per hour, as shown in the MONITOR display. The maxi-
mum speed setting can be changed, if desired, by pressing the SET buttons. Each time one of the but-
tons is pressed, the setting will change by 0.1 mile per hour. The buttons can be held down to change
the setting rapidly. The maximum speed setting can be from 3 miles per hour up to 10 miles per hour.
Note: The minimum speed setting for the program is preset at 1 mile per hour, and cannot be changed.
Each program consists of twenty equal time periods, called segments. A speed setting should now be
programmed for each of the program segments. The program segments are displayed in the vertical
columns of the PROGRAM display. Up to eight segments are displayed at a time: the segment most
recently completed, the current segment, and the next six upcoming segments. The lighted indicators
in each vertical column show the speed setting programmed for the segment displayed. One lighted
indicator represents 1 mile per hour, and eight lighted indicators represents the maximum speed set-
ting. if a program has not previously been created, four indicators will be lighted in each column.
To program a speed setting for the first program segment, displayed in the CURRENT SEGMENT col-
umn, press the SEGMENT ADJUST increase or decrease buttons until the desired number of indica-
tors is lighted. Each time the increase button is pressed, the speed setting will increase; every fourth
time the button is pressed, an additional indicator will light. The button can be held down to increase
the speed setting rapidly. The SEGMENT ADJUST decrease button operates in the same manner to
decrease the speed setting. When the desired speed setting has been programmed, press the SEG-
MENT ADJUST left button. The first program segment will move to the left, and the second segment
will be displayed in the CURRENT SEGMENT column. Program a speed setting for the second seg-
ment in the same manner. Repeat this procedure until you have programmed speed settings for all
twenty segments. You may wish to program slow settings for the first few segments, a combination of
faster settings for the middie segments and slow settings for the final few segments. An endless vari-
ety of speed settings can be programmed.
Each program segment is preset to last for 1 minute, as shown in the SEGMENT TIMER display.
(Since there are 20 segments, the program will last for 20 minutes.) The segments can be set to last
for a different length of time, if desired. First, select the TIME/SET mode by repeatedly pressing the
MODE button. (Make sure the SCAN mode is not selected.) Next, press the SET buttons to change
the length of time the segments will last. Each time one of the buttons is pressed, the length of time
will change by 1 second. (The length of time the program will last will be shown in the MONITOR dis-
play.) The buttons can be held down to change the length of time rapidly. The segments can be set to
last for a minimum of 30 seconds, up to a maximum of 3 minutes.
To start the program, press the START/STOP button. The first program segment will be displayed in the
CURRENT SEGMENT column, and the speed of the walking belt will change to the setting programmed
for the first segment. Step carefully onto the walking belt and begin exercising. The time remaining in
the first segment will be shown in the SEGMENT TIMER display. When no time remains, the first seg-
ment will move to the left, the second segment will be displayed in the CURRENT SEGMENT column
and the speed of the walking belt will change to the second setting. The program will continue in this
manner until the twentieth segment is displayed in the CURRENT SEGMENT column and no time
remains. The walking belt will then slow to a stop.
While the program is in progress, you can change the speed of the walking belt, if desired, by pressing
the SEGMENT ADJUST increase or decrease button. (The SPEED buttons will not operate while a
~ user program or preset program is selected.) If you desire to stop the walking belt before the program
has ended, press the START/STOP button. The console will then be in the same state as if the pro-
gram had ended.
After the program has ended, a different program can be selected or the console can be switched to
the manual mode by pressing the MANUAL button. The user program you have created will be stored
in memory.
SELECTING A PRESET PROGRAM
Press the PEAK, RAMP, INTERVAL or VALLEY button. A *P1" (PEAK), "P2" (RAMP), "P3" (INTER-
VAL) or "P4" (VALLEY) will appear for five seconds in the SEGMENT TIMER display to show which
program you have selected. The small diagrams above the PROGRAM buttons show how the speed
of the walking belt will change during each program. During the PEAK program, for example, the
speed will gradually increase and then gradually decrease.
After a program has been selected, a maximum speed setting should be selected for the program.
This is done in the same manner as for a user program. Note: The minimum speed setting for the pro-
gram will vary depending on the maximum speed setting. If the maximum speed setting is 3 miles per
hour, the minimum speed setting will be 1 mile per hour. For each additional 1 mile per hour that the
maximum speed setting is increased, the minimum speed setting will increase 0.5 miles per hour. For
10
example, if the maximum speed setting is increased to 4 miles per hour, the minimum speed setting will
be 1.5 miles per hour.
The first seven segments of the selected program will be shown i in the PROGRAM display. If desired,
the speed setting of any segment can be changed. Press the SEGMENT ADJUST left or right buttons
until the segment you want to change is displayed in the CURRENT SEGMENT column. Press the
SEGMENT ADJUST increase or decrease buttons to change the speed setting of the segment.
Next, set the length of time you want each program segment to last. This is done in the same manner
as for a user program.
To start the program, press the START/STOP button. The program will run in exactly the same manner
as a user program. After the program has ended, a different program can be selected or the console
can be switched to the manual mode by pressing the MANUAL button. Although the settings of a pre-
set program can be changed, any changes made to the speed settings will not be saved in memory.

CONDITIONING GUIDELINES
The following guidelines will help you to plan your exercise program. Remember that proper nutrition
and adequate rest are essential for successful results.
A WARNING: = Before beginning this or any exercise program, consult your physician.
This is especially important for individuals over the age of 35 or individuals with pre-existing
- health problems.
EXERCISE INTENSITY
To maximize the benefits of exercising, it is important to exercise with the proper intensity. The proper
intensity level can be found by using your heart rate as a guide. For effective aerobic exercise, your
heart rate should be maintained at a level between 70% and 85% of your maximum heart rate as you
exercise. This is known as your training zone. You can find your training zone in the table below.
UNCONDITIONED| CONDITIONED UNCONDITIONED| CONDITIONED
TRAINING ZONE | TRAINING ZONE TRAINING ZONE | TRAINING ZONE

During the first few months of your exercise program, keep your heart rate near the low end of your
training zone as you exercise. After a few months of regular exercise, your heart rate can be increased
gradually until it is near the middle of your training zone as you exercise. You can measure your heart
rate using the pulse mode of the console. Exercise for at least four minutes, and then measure your
heart rate immediately. If your heart rate is too high, decrease the intensity of your exercise. If your
heart rate is too low, increase the intensity of your exercise.
A WARNING: The pulse earclip is not a medical device. Various factors, including your
movement during exercise, may affect the accuracy of heart rate readings. The earclip Is intend-
ed only as an exercise aid in determining heart rate trends In general.
WORKOUT GUIDELINES
Each workout should consist of three basic parts: a warm-up, 20 to 30 Minutes of training zone exercise,
and a cool-down. Warming up prepares the body for exercise by increasing circulation, delivering more
oxygen to the muscles and raising the body temperature. Begin each workout with 5 to 10 minutes of
stretching and light exercise to warm up. Then, increase the intensity of your exercise to raise your heart
rate to your training zone for 20 to 30 minutes. Breathe regularly and deeply as you exercise—never
hold your breath. Finish each workout with 5 to 10 minutes of stretching to cool down. This will increase
the flexibility of your muscles as well as help to decrease soreness and other post-exercise problems.
To maintain or improve your condition, complete three workouts each week, with at least one day of rest
between workouts. After a few months of regular exercise, you may complete up to five workouts each
week, if desired. The key to success is CONSISTENCY. 13
