RES TRACER II OPERATING GUIDE WARNING: TO PREVENT ELECTRICAL SHOCK OR FIRE HAZARD, DO NOT EXPOSE THIS APPLIANCE TO RAIN OR MOISTURE. BEFORE USING THIS APPLIANCE, READ BACK COVER FOR FURTHER WARNINGS. TRACER" Il TRACER” II FEATURES: Compact Body Design Bilaminated Rock Maple Neck w/Maple Fingerboard 22 Nickel Silver Frets 15" Fingerboard Radius, 25" Scale One 12-Pole Distortion Class Pickup One High-Output Single Coil Pickup One Master Volume Control and One Master Tone Control Three-Position Pickup Selector Switch Peavey Power Bend Tremolo Graphlon™ Top Nut PICKUPS: The bridge pick-up is of the distortion class 12-pole ‘humbucking’ noise cancelling type. The neck pickup is of the hi-output single coil type. Both of the pickups are fully height adjustable by means of height adjusting screws and the bridge pickup has individually adjustable pole pieces for adjustment of each string's output level. CONTROLS: 1. Volume Control: The volume control acts as a master volume in that it controls the total signal level delivered from both pickups to the output jack. Rotating the control knob clockwise will increase volume; rotating counter- clockwise will reduce volume. 2. Tone Control: The tone control, like the volume control, operates as a master control. Rotating clock- wise will result in more treble (high frequencies) and a brighter tonality. Rotating counterclockwise will result in less treble and a “bassier” type sound. 3. Pickup Selector Switch: This three-position switch allows selection of any individual pickup, or two combinations of multiple pickups. The available selection possibilities are as follows: First Position (Toward the neck) Selects output of the neck pickup only. Second Position (Center) Selects output of the neck and bridge pickups. Third Position (Toward the bridge) Selects output of bridge pickup only. Adjustments: Your instrument has been carefully adjusted for accurate intonation and playing ease at the Peavey factory. However, your playing style or playing requirements may necessitate additional adjustments at some time in the future. These adjustments should be made by your Peavey dealer. However, with a little care and by adhering closely to the following instructions, you may attempt these adjustments yourself. Neck Tilt: The neck tilt adjustment works in conjunction with the bridge height adjustment to set the overall string playing height. This adjustment should be used whenever possible to set string height rather than the bridge height adjustment. 1. Relieve string tension slightly by detuning guitar (approximately 110 2 full steps). 2 Loosen two neck screws (closest to headstock of quitar) ap- proximately 1 turn. 3. Loosen remaining two neck screws (closest to bridge) ap- proximately 2 turns. 4. String height may now be adjusted with the neck tilt screw which is located inside the fifth hole in the neck plate. A 15" allen wrench is used to make this adjustment. Turning the screw clockwise lowers the strings closer to the fingerboard. NOTE STRING HEIGHT SHOULD BE ADJUSTED TO FIT YOUR OWN PARTICULAR PLAYING STYLE. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT SETTING THE STRING HEIGHT TOO LOW WILL RESULT IN EXCESSIVE STRING BUZZ AND RATTLE - ESPECIALLY WITH A "HEAVY" PLAYING TECHNIQUE. EXCESSIVELY HIGH ACTION WILL RESULT IN INTONATION PROBLEMS AND DECREASED PLAY- ABILITY. 5. After adjustment, securely tighten all four neck attaching screws. 6. Tune quitar to standard pitch. Check strings for correct height and playability. If necessary, repeat steps 1 through 5 until action is correct. Adjusting Tremolo: Your Power Bend Tremolo has been carefully adjusted for accurate intonation, playing ease, and pitch change. Your instru- ment has been supplied from the factory with high quality Peavey Ys and set up accordingly. Should the unit require adjustments, please read the following carefully before attempting any adjustments. To adjust your Power Bend Tremaolo unit properly, you must first understand the operating principle. This tremolo features a steel bridge plate with a massive inertia block for maximum sustain. The heavy-duty die cast saddles are specially shaped and designed to minimize friction, and are triple chrome-plated for maximum durability and freedom from wear. Adjustable springs allow easy operation with accurate return to pitch. The special design of our Power Bend system allows strings to be pulled above or below pitch, and the action of this tremolo is both smooth and responsive. Proper tremolo action is a result of accurate balancing between string tension and tremolo spring tension. Adjusting Tremolo Balance: If the bridge is set at an extreme forward angle, the pitch drop will decrease drastically, therefore the spring tension must be increased by tightening the claw screws using a Philips head screwdriver. The claw is located under the spring cover on the back of the guitar, Turn screws clockwise to increase tension, counter clockwise to decrease tension. Decreasing the spring tension will loosen operating tension. Recommended plate angle with factory installed Peavey 008% is 2° to 5°. NOTE BEFORE AND AFTER MAKING THESE ADJUSTMENTS, THE UNIT SHOULD BE TUNED TO PROPER PITCH "A" 440. Should a large or smaller gauge set of strings be desired, the spring tension in the back of the guitar must be adjusted ac- cordingly, as well as intonation. A third spring has been supplied with your instrument inside the storage compartment of the case. We would advise installation of this spring if string gauges larger than .010 - .048 are desired. It is recommended 10 use needle nose pliers to install these, connecting spring to the claw first, and then the block. Make sure the spring has ssaled properly before releasing the spring. CAUTION LOOSEN ALL STRING TENSION BEFORE INSTALLING OR REMOVING TENSION SPRINGS. TREMOLO SPRINGS ARE DESIGNED FOR HIGH TENSION. EXTREME CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN WHEN INSTALLING THESE SPRINGS AS WELL AS REMOVING THEM. IF SPRINGS ARE NOT SECURED PROPERLY, THEY MAY SPRING AWAY FROM THE GUITAR CAUSING POS- SIBLE INJURY AND/OR INSTRUMENT DAMAGE. CHE CAST SADDLES BRIDGE FLATE Bridge Plate Angle 29 10:59 i i | "ii ya SA U 22-05 ( Recommended plate angle with factory installed Peavey .009's is 29 to 50, Making Tremolo Non-Operational ltis possible to render your Power Bend Tremolo non-operable by rotating arm counter clockwise until arm can be removed. Install third spring and increase spring tension if needed. (See “Adjusting Tremolo Tension") With proper adjustment, this should stabilize the inertia block from any movement. Saddle Height Adjustment: This instrument features individual bridge saddles which work in conjunction with the neck tilt adjustment to determine the overall string height. Ordinarily, the neck tilt should be used to set the string height. However, individual string saddles can be adjusted to follow the curvature of the neck to optimize string/fret distance. Use a 3/64" allen wrench to make the adjustment for each string, String Intonation: Accurate string intonation settings ensure that your instrument will play in tune at any point on the neck. Although "perfect intonation” is a physical impossibility with a fretted instrument, the correct settings will maximize the accuracy of individual notes up and down the neck. Intonation is set by comparing the pitch of an open string to the pitch of the same string when it is played one octave higher at the 12th fret. The actual “vibrating length” of that string is varied until the notes are both at the right pitch. The “vibrating length" of the string is altered by adjusting the bridge saddle either forward or backward, depending on whether the fretted note is sharper or flatter in pitch than the open note. If the fretted note is sharper than the open nots, the vibrating length of the string must be increased - move the bridge saddle to the rear, away from the pickup. If the fretted note is flat, the vibrating length must be shortened - move the bridge saddle forward, toward the pickup, 10 shorten the length. NOTE ITIS OFTEN DIFFICULT FOR THE UNTRAINED EAR TO DETERMINE WHEN THE OPEN NOTE AND THE FRETTED NOTE ARE AT PRECISELY THE SAME PITCH. SOME PLAYERS FIND THAT COM- PARING THE 12TH FRET HARMONIC OF THE STRING (RATHER THAN THE OPENNOTE} TOTHEFRETTED NOTE IS MUCH EASIER. A HARMONIC IS PLAYED BY PLUCKING THE STRING WITH THE RIGHT HAND WHILE TOUCHING THE STRING WITH THE LEFT INDEX FINGER (AS LIGHTLY AS POSSIBLE) DIRECTLY ABOVE THE TWELFTH FRET. THE LEFT INDEX FINGER IS DRAWN AWAY AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE AFTER THE STRING IS PLUCKED, PRO- DUCING A "CHIME" EFFECT. THIS CHIMED NOTE IS THEN COM- PARED TO THE FRETTED NOTE. FOR EVEN GREATER EASE AND A HIGH DEGREE OF ACCURACY, WE RECOMMEND ONE OF THE MANY TYPES OF ELECTRONIC GUITAR TUNERS THAT ARE AVAILABLE FROM MOST MUSIC STORES. THE TUNERS WHICH USE EITHER AMETER OR A MOVING LED DISPLAY ARE USUALLY EASIER TO USE THAN THE TYPE WITH A NUMERICAL FREQUENCY READOUT. Setting Intonation: INERTIA BLOCK TENSION SPRING CLAW TENSION SCHEWS NOTE BOTH TORSION ROD AND STRING HEIGHT SETTINGS INTERACT CLOSELY WITH STRING INTONATION. THESE ADJUSTMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE ANY ATTEMPT |S MADE TO SET STRING INTONATION AT THE BRIDGE. 1. Ensure that torsion rod and string height settings are accurate. 2. Tune guitar to standard A-440 pitch. 3. Hold the instrument ina normal playing position or place the guitar on a clean flat surface, so that only the body is in contact with the work surface. Any pressure on the neck will affect intonation settings. 4. Play the 1st string open and compare it tothe pitch of the same string when it is played at the 12th iret. These notes should be the same (one octave apart). 5. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, adjust the length of the string saddle so that the open note and the fretted note (or harmonic) are the same. NOTE ITWILL OFTEN BE NECESSARY TO RETUAN THE OPEN STRING TO STANDARD PITCH AFTER THE BRIDGE POSITION IS AL- TERED. . Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the remaining strings. . Repeat steps 1 through 6 as necessary until intonation of all the strings are accurately adjusted. Care For The Instrument: =| I © © See au = Co J E a LU ET LJ This is a high quality musical instrument constructed from the finest materials and with the most up-to-date production methods available. With reasonable care, it should provide many, many years of service and outstanding playability. Temperature and Humidity: It is important that your instrument be protected from any extremes or sudden changes in either temperature or humidity. The instrument should be stored in its case whenever it is not in use. Strings: String life may be greatly extended by frequent cleaning and wiping after use. Dirt and perspiration tend to build up on the underside of the strings, so it is often necessary to slide a rag between the strings and the fingerboard. Dirt-laden strings cause tuning and intonation problems as well as rust and corrosion. For best performance, strings should be changed approximately once a manth orevery twenty-four playing hours. Some players may find that they prefer to change strings more often, NOTE YOUR INSTRUMENT IS EQUIPPED WITH HIGH QUALITY PEAVEY STRINGS. THE INTONATION AND ACTION OF YOUR INSTRUMENT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY ADJUSTED FOR MAXIMUM PLAYABILITY WITH THESE STRINGS. WHEN STRING REPLACEMENT BECOMES NECESSARY, WE RECOMMEND OUR HIGH QUALITY AND LONG LASTING PEAVEY STRINGS. Finish: Your instrument has a polyurethane finish which is durable and weather-resistant, but nevertheless, needs care. For best results, periodic cleaning with a high-guality guitar polish is recommended. Between cleanings, the instrument should be wiped with a clean, dry cloth. Case: A molded case provides maximum protection and road durability. The case features large storage areas and a padlock tab to facilitate locking for air shipment. The case may be cleaned with a damp cloth, with or without soap. Care should be taken to avoid wetting the interior.
