DRILL PRESS Review
1. HOW DO YOU DRILL A HOLE AT AN ANGLE ON THE DRILL PRESS? Tilt the table, use clamps, or a vise.
2. WHAT DOES AN EXPANSIVE BIT DO?€ It is adjustable for various sizes within a range to drill holes.
3. WHAT IS A SPEED (SPADE) BIT USED FOR?€ Drilling holes with flat bottoms in wood.
4. HOW IS A SELF CENTERING DOWELING JIG SET UP?€ Clamp the jig on the edge of the stock to be drilled over the marked center, select
the proper drill size, clamp the bit in the drill chuck, then drill the hole.
5. HOW CAN YOU MIX PAINT ON A DRILL PRESS?€ Set the drill press to the slowest speed, clamp the paint mixing blade in the drill chuck,
operate the drill press for a short appropriate time for mixing.
6. WHAT IS A HOLE SAW USED FOR?€ It is used to cut small circles or holes in wood less than one inch thick.
7. HOW IS THE DRILL PRESS SET UP FOR DRILLING END GRAIN?€ Adjust the table height, clamp the stock with a vise or parallel clamp,
position the clamp to help keep the stock from spinning.
8. HOW ARE DOWELS OR PLUGS FOR SCREWS CUT ON THE DRILL PRESS? Clamp the appropriate size plug cutter in the drill chuck, operate
the drill press at a medium speed, with steady downward pressure.
9. WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO GRIND JOINTER KNIVES ON THE DRILL PRESS? With appropriate clamps and fixture, mount the grinding wheel
in the drill chuck, adjust the speed, take light grinding passes.
10. HOW CAN THE CAPACITY OF THE DRILL PRESS BE INCREASED?€ Change the Drill chuck.
11. WHAT DOES A FLY CUTTER (CIRCLE CUTTER) LOOK LIKE AND WHAT DOES IT DO?€ Using a single point cutter and mounted in a drill chuck
it will cut circles out of wood.
12. HOW IS A SANDING DRUM SET UP ON A DRILL PRESS? Clamp the drum sander spindle in the drill chuck, set the speed to slow, use a
clamp to hold the stock to be sanded or a fence on the drill press table, hold the stock against the spinning drum sander.
13. WHAT ATTACHMENT IS NEEDED IN ORDER TO CONVERT A DRILL PRESS INTO A MORTISER?€ A special mortising drill bit and chisel is
mounted in the drill chuck.€
14. HOW CAN A HAND CUT MORTISE BE MADE FASTER BY USING A DRILL PRESS?€ Drill a series of holes smaller than the mortise slot, then
use a chisel to clean out the rectangular slot.
15. HOW CAN ROUTING BE DONE IN THE DRILL PRESS?€ Mount a router bit in the drill chuck, increase the drill press speed, use a fence,
adjust the table to the appropriate height, feed the workpiece into the router bit.
16. HOW CAN A DRILL PRESS BE CONVERTED INTO A SHAPER?€ Same as above, but with a shaper bit on a spindle, with appropriate speed
set for the size of the cutter.
17. HOW IS A DRILL BIT KEPT FROM OVERHEATING WHEN DRILLING A DEEP HOLE? While the bit is turning retract the drill bit from the hole
allowing the air to cool the bit.
18. IS IT POSSIBLE TO SAW A STRAIGHT LINE ON THE DRILL PRESS? With an appropriate spindle a€ circular saw blade, setup a fence, feed
the work into the blade.

19. HOW CAN THE TABLE OF THE DRILL PRESS BE ADJUSTED? It can be rotated around the post, raised up and down, or tilted by loosening
the table clamp bolt.
20. WHAT ARE THE TWO KINDS OF DRILL PRESS THAT ARE MADE? Vertical and Horizontal.
21. CAN A HAND AUGER BIT BE USED IN A DRILL PRESS? IF NOT, WHY?€ No Because the feed screw will pull the bit into the work too fast to
adequately control the drilling depth.
22. WHAT DETERMINES THE SIZE OF THE DRILL PRESS?€ The size of the drill press chuck capacity.
23. WHAT DO POWER BITS HAVE THAT REPLACES THE FEED SCREW?€ A vee-point chisel point.
24. WHAT MUST BE DONE TO A FEED SCREW BEFORE IT CAN BE USED ON THE DRILL PRESS? It should never be used.
25. WHAT SPEED IS SET FOR LARGE DIAMETER BITS ON THE DRILL PRESS?€ The general rule for drilling is the smaller the hole the faster the
speed should go, the larger the hole the slower the speed should go.
26. HOW DO YOU CHANGE THE SPEED ON THE DRILL PRESS?€ Depending on the model drill press, some require a drive belt change, others
require a turn of the speed adjustment while the drill press is running.
27. HOW CAN YOU KEEP FROM SPLINTERING THE BOTTOM OF HOLES WHEN DRILLING? Firmly clamp a piece of wood beneath the wood that
the hole is being drilled in.
28. HOW IS THE DEPTH STOP SET ON THE DRILL PRESS ACCORDING TO THE BOOK? First adjust the table height with appropriate material
beneath it, mount the drill bit in the drill chuck, set the point of the drill bit to the necessary depth, then adjust the drill press stop to
prevent over drilling the depth.€
29. WHEN AND WHY DO YOU SET THE DRILL PRESS DEPTH STOP?€ To prevent drilling through stock, or to drill to a specific depth.
30. HOW IS END GRAIN DRILLED ON THE DRILL PRESS?€ You must use a sharp drill bit clamped in the drill chuck, while using a clamp to hold
the stock to prevent it from spinning.
31. HOW IS THE DRILL PRESS SET UP FOR DRILLING ANGLES?€ Tilt the table, clamp the stock, use appropriate speed and safety precautions for
drilling.
32. HOW DO YOU REDUCE THE TENDENCY TOWARD RIPPING UP WHEN DRILLING AT AN ANGLE?€ Clamp a waste stock piece over the hole to be
drilled.
