1 Introduction

Overview

The HPE StoreOnce 5100 System (48 TB) Capacity Upgrade Kit (BB916A) is a disk enclosure containing twelve 4 TB disks. It includes a hot spare disk.

Up to five Capacity Upgrade Kits may be added to the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System. A license is required for each additional Capacity Upgrade Kit and a license entitlement certificate is included with the kit, which describes how to obtain the License To Use.

NOTE:

The StoreOnce 5100 48 TB Capacity Upgrade Kit requires StoreOnce software version

3.14.0 or higher and may only be used with the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System.

Different length SAS cables (up to a maximum of 2 metres) are supported. These must be purchased separately.

Capacity Upgrade scenarios

In order to use this guide, first establish which scenario best describes your requirements.

Scenario 1: You have received the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System from the factory pre-configured with additional storage enclosures.

Scenario 2: You are adding one or more StoreOnce 5100 48TB Capacity Upgrade Kits to an existing installation.

The following two sections provide an overview of each scenario with pointers to more detailed information in the rest of this guide.

Scenario 1: You have received the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System from the factory pre-configured with additional storage enclosures

If you have ordered capacity upgrade kits with the initial installation, all additional storage is pre-configured at the factory. This means that the storage is licensed and ready for use without further configuration.

However, unless the whole system is supplied within a rack, the individual components are disassembled and packed individually for delivery. At this point in the factory process, a label is attached to each capacity upgrade kit (item 2 on Figure 2) that identifies the server to which it belongs and its sequence within the daisy chain of connected capacity upgrade kits. For example, if the original installation has three capacity upgrade kits, the labels will show:

JBOD1 for <server_serial_number>: this is the capacity upgrade kit that should be connected directly to the server identified by its serial number.

JBOD2 for <server_serial_number>: this is the second capacity upgrade kit.

JBOD3 for <server_serial_number>: this is the third capacity upgrade kit.

NOTE:

Up to five JBODs may be connected.

The process for adding HPE StoreOnce 5100 48TB Capacity Upgrade Kit(s) at initial installation is summarized below:

1.

Unpack the StoreOnce 5100 48TB Capacity Upgrade Kit(s) and check the contents. See

Capacity Upgrade Kit contents (page 6).

2.

Look for the assembly labels on the pull-out tag on the rear of the unit (top left) and use the

SAS cable to connect the StoreOnce 5100 48TB Capacity Upgrade Kit(s) to the HPE

StoreOnce 5100 System, identified by the server serial number, and according to the JBOD sequence specified.

For detailed cabling instructions, see also Installing and connecting the Capacity Upgrade

Kit (page 9).

6 Introduction

IMPORTANT:

Be sure to connect all Capacity Upgrade Kits before powering on the HPE

StoreOnce 5100 System. The StoreOnce 5100 48TB Capacity Upgrade Kit(s) must be connected to the correct HPE StoreOnce 5100 System in the recommended sequence.

3.

Use the supplied cables to connect the Capacity Upgrade Kit(s) to the power supply; it powers on automatically. Wait for one minute to allow power on to complete.

4.

Follow the instructions in the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System Start Here poster and HPE

StoreOnce 3100, 3500 and 5100 System Basic Configuration Guide to install and configure the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System.

5.

Log on to the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System as a user with the role of Administrator and go to Storage -> Storage Configuration.

6.

At the prompt to scan for storage click OK. Then click Scan for Storage . This may take a few minutes.

7.

When the scan completes a list of attached storage is displayed. All storage should be licensed and configured. The HPE StoreOnce 5100 System and attached storage is ready

to use. See Scan for storage (page 16) for example screen shots.

NOTE:

See Troubleshooting (page 25) for more information, if the storage is not found.

Scenario 2: You are adding one or more StoreOnce 5100 48TB Capacity Upgrade

Kits to an existing installation

IMPORTANT:

The addition of storage is an online operation; this means that additional storage may be added while backups/restores are in progress. However, the new capacity will not be available until the expansion process completes and there may be a performance impact on backup/restore operations during the process.

The process for adding capacity upgrade kits to an existing installation is summarized below.

You will also need to obtain a License To Use for each Capacity Upgrade Kit as described in the license entitlement certificate.

1.

Make sure that backup administrators are aware of the expansion process and check to see how any scheduled jobs, such as backup, replication, or copy, may be affected by decreased performance.

NOTE:

The amount of time taken to expand storage so that the new storage is available for use is dependent on the number of capacity upgrade kits being added, and when parity

initialization is run in the process. See Parity initialization considerations (page 8).

2.

Unpack the Capacity Upgrade kit(s) and check the contents. See Capacity Upgrade Kit contents (page 6).

3.

Install the rail kit(s) and the Capacity Upgrade kit(s) and use the SAS cable to connect the

storage enclosure(s) to the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System. See Installing and connecting the Capacity Upgrade Kit (page 9) for cabling drawings.

IMPORTANT:

Be sure to connect all Capacity Upgrade Kits before configuring the storage.

4.

Use the supplied cables to connect the Capacity Upgrade Kit(s) to the power supply; it powers on automatically. Wait for one minute to allow power on to complete.

5.

Log on to the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System as Administrator and go to Storage -> Storage

Configuration.

6.

At the prompt to scan for storage click OK. Then click Scan for Storage. This may take a few minutes.

7.

When the scan completes a list of attached storage is displayed. The new storage will show as unlicensed and unconfigured.

License the additional storage. See Licensing and adding storage (page 18).

IMPORTANT:

When connecting multiple kits you must add all licenses before expanding the capacity of the HPE StoreOnce System. The storage expansion process will fail if there are any attached expansion enclosures for which a license has not been applied. All storage must also be in an OK state.

Add the licensed storage to the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System. See Licensing and adding storage (page 18).

NOTE:

See Troubleshooting (page 25) for more information, if any steps in this procedure fail.

Parity initialization considerations

RAID parity initialization starts when the volumes are created for new storage. You have the option of waiting for parity initialization to complete before expanding the file system

(recommended) or of continuing with the file system expansion. If you do not wait, data is still protected but parity initialization will take longer and performance of the whole system may be slightly lower until parity initialization completes.

If you do not need immediate access to the new storage, HPE recommends waiting until parity initialization completes before expanding the file system.

If you need access to the new storage quickly, or will not be onsite to expand the file system after parity initialization completes (perhaps over night), you may choose to expand the file system before parity initialization completes.

System Capacity Upgrade Kit

The information in this chapter is valid for all installation scenarios.

The Capacity Upgrade Kit can be installed into most standard server racks. To verify that your rack is supported for use with the disk enclosure, see the QuickSpecs for the disk enclosure at the HPE website: http://www.hpe.com.

CAUTION:

Use extreme caution when installing and pulling units from the rack; they can slip and fall, causing damage to the StoreOnce System or injury. Hewlett Packard Enterprise is not responsible for any damage or injury caused by the mishandling of the StoreOnce System. Always use at least two people to lift and locate an enclosure into the rack.

Preparing for installation

1.

Unpack the capacity upgrade kit and check the contents, see Capacity Upgrade Kit contents (page 6).

NOTE:

For systems where the Capacity Upgrade Kit has been pre-configured at the factory, locate the label on the rear of the unit that identifies the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System to which the Capacity Upgrade Kit belongs and its position in the daisy chain sequence of

storage shelves. See Figure 2 (page 5).

2.

Unpack the rail kit and read the printed instructions supplied with the rail kit to install the rails and the capacity upgrade kit(s).

IMPORTANT:

Be sure to read the installation guidelines carefully before installing the rails and the expansion enclosure. They provide important safety information.

NOTE:

The printed instructions suggest adjusting the back bracket on the standard rail kit after installing the rails. For ease of installation with the Capacity Upgrade Kit, HPE recommends making the adjustment prior to mounting the rail kit, as described in the next section.

3.

Identify the rack location for the 2U Capacity Upgrade Kit.

IMPORTANT:

For ease of installation HPE recommends daisy chaining Capacity Upgrade

Kits so that all enclosures are either above or below the head server.

Maintenance mode with StoreOnce Remote Support

If StoreOnce Remote Support is configured, use the following StoreOnce CLI command to put the StoreOnce System into maintenance mode prior to installing the capacity upgrade. This will prevent a support case being generated: system enable remoteeventsuppression “Capacity Upgrade”

Once expansion is complete, use the following StoreOnce CLI command to disable remote event suppression: system disable remoteeventsuppression “Capacity Upgrade”

Racking procedure

WARNING!

Ensure that sufficient personnel are on hand to support the product(s) during the installation process. Use of the appropriate lifting device is recommended as an installation aid.

1.

Adjust the back bracket on the standard rail kit to accommodate the Capacity Upgrade Kit.

Attach rear hold down brackets by sliding the tab with the arrow pointed forward (1) into the corresponding slot on the left and right side of the rear of the chassis. Use the black headed thumb screw to secure tightly to the rail in the second hole from the rear (2).

NOTE:

It is easier to make this adjustment prior to mounting the rails.

2.

Position left and right rack rails at the desired 'U' position in the rack, adjusting the rails to fit the rack, as needed. Front and Rear bottom edge of rails must align with the bottom of

EIA boundary in the lowermost 'U'

NOTE:

Rails are marked L and R with an arrow indicating the direction in which the rail should be installed.

3.

Use guide pins to align the shelf mount kit to the RETMA column holes.

4.

To engage the rear, push the rail toward the back of the rack until the spring hook snaps into place.

5.

To engage the front, pull the rail towards the front of the rack to engage the spring hook with the RETMA column in the same manner as the rear spring hook.

NOTE:

Make sure that the respective guide pins for the square or round hole rack align properly into RETMA column hole spacing.

6.

Secure rear of rack rail to the RETMA column with either the round- or square-hole shoulder screws provided in the package.

Secure front of rail to the front RETMA column using the provided flat securing screw/guide pin in the bottom screw position of the rail.

8.

Slide the enclosure into position on the rails (1). Secure the chassis into the rack by tightening the captive CTO screw behind the latch on the front left and right bezel ears of the chassis

(2).

CAUTION:

The front CTO screw must be attached at all times when racked.

Connecting the Capacity Upgrade Kit

1.

If this is the first Capacity Upgrade Kit, use the supplied SAS cable to connect the mini–SAS connector on the cable to the SAS port on the RAID controller on the rear of the HPE

StoreOnce 5100 System.

Connect the mini-SAS connector on the other end of the cable to the P1 connector on the rear of the Capacity Upgrade Kit.

NOTE:

For systems that have been factory pre-configured, use the label on the rear of the unit to identify the Capacity Upgrade Kit that should be connected first; it will be labelled

“JBOD1 for <server serial number>”.

2.

When installing more than one Capacity Upgrade Kit, use the supplied SAS cables to daisy chain up to five expansion enclosures in total. The connection is from P2 on the upper module of the first enclosure to P1 on the upper module of the next enclosure, as illustrated below.

IMPORTANT:

For ease of installation HPE recommends daisy chaining Capacity Upgrade

Kits so that all enclosures are either above or below the head server. Different length SAS cables (up to a maximum of 2 metres) are supported, but these must be ordered separately.

Use the supplied power cords to connect the Capacity Upgrade Kit to the main power supply.

The Capacity Upgrade Kit powers on automatically. Wait for a minute for the power on process to complete. The System Power and Status LEDs will be solid green.

NOTE:

If you are adding Capacity Upgrade Kits to a pre-configured installation, power on the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System.

3 Applying the License and Completing the RAID

Expansion

When the Capacity Upgrade Kit is powered on, log on to the StoreOnce GUI as an Administrator.

The examples in this chapter illustrate how to use the StoreOnce GUI:

To scan for storage — optional for pre-configured storage in order to check for correct configuration, required when storage is added to an existing installation

To apply capacity licenses — required only when storage is added to an existing installation

To expand storage capacity — required only when storage is added to an existing installation

You can also use StoreOnce CLI commands top carry out these tasks, as summarized in Using the StoreOnce CLI (page 23). See the HPE StoreOnce System CLI Reference Guide for more

information.

Scan for storage

This step is required if you are adding storage to an existing installation.

It is optional if you have received the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System from the factory pre-configured with additional storage, because it presents a useful summary of the configured storage.

1.

Click Storage in the Navigator pane. Select the Storage Configuration tab.

2.

An Information dialog box will appear that tells you to click Scan for Storage. Click OK.

3.

Click Scan for Storage. You will see a storage scan in progress message. The scan can take up to 5 minutes.

Scenario 1: Pre-configured storage

If storage has been pre-configured and you have reconnected the Capacity Upgrade kits in the correct sequence, the following prompt is displayed.

Click OK to see details of the pre-configured storage. In the Capacity section the Configured

Raw Storage and Licensed Storage will have the same values and the Unconfigured Raw

Storage and Unlicensed Capacity will display 0 TB. Details of the storage are in the Configured

Storage section and the Unconfigured Storage section is empty. The following example is from an HPE StoreOnce 5100 System with four Capacity Upgrade Kits.

No further action is required, installation is complete, and the StoreOnce System and attached storage are ready to use.

Scenario 2: Adding capacity upgrade kits to an existing installation

If you are adding capacity upgrade kits to an existing installation, there will be a value against the Unlicensed Capacity with a link to Apply License.

Click on the Apply License link to go to the License Management page. Locate the Node Lock

Serial Number and make a note of it. You need this number to redeem the license. Follow the procedures in the rest of this chapter to redeem the license and to complete capacity expansion

Redeeming the Capacity license from the HP Passport web site

This step is required if you are adding storage to an existing installation.

The Capacity Upgrade Kit includes a license entitlement certificate. This is a paper document that contains all the information you need to obtain your unique LTU (License to Use) key from the HP Licensing web site.

NOTE:

Licenses should be redeemed individually resulting in a license key for each upgrade kit. Do not merge multiple entitlements to redeem a single license key.

IMPORTANT:

When connecting multiple Capacity Upgrade Kits, you must add all licenses before expanding the capacity of the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System. The storage expansion process will fail if there are any attached expansion enclosures for which a license has not been applied.

1.

Make sure you have a note of the Node Lock Serial Number from the License Management page on the StoreOnce GUI, as described in the previous section.

2.

Go to the HP Licensing web site, as directed in the license entitlement certificate.

3.

Log in using your HP Passport user ID and password.

4.

Obtain the unique LTU key as instructed on the License Entitlement Certificate. You may use Cut and Paste to copy it to a temporary file or save it to a .DAT file.

NOTE:

If you save the LTU as a .DAT file, use an sftp application to put it into the HPE

StoreOnce System's licenses directory, as described in the user guide for your product.

5.

Use the StoreOnce GUI to apply the license, as described in the next section.

Licensing and adding storage to the HPE StoreOnce System

This section is only relevant when you are adding a Capacity Upgrade Kit to an existing installation.

It describes how to use the StoreOnce GUI to apply the redeemed license, create a new volume

and expand the file system. If you wish to use the StoreOnce CLI, see Using the StoreOnce

CLI (page 23).

To apply the redeemed license

1.

Click Storage in the Navigator pane. Select the Storage Configuration tab.

2.

An Information dialog box will appear that tells you to click Scan for Storage. Click OK.

3.

Click Scan for Storage. You will see a storage scan in progress message. The scan can take up to 5 minutes.

4.

The storage expansion configuration will be shown. See the online help for information about the fields on this page.

NOTE:

If you receive a Warning dialog box saying that no additional storage devices were found, check cables and the power state of attached devices and try the scan again.

5.

Click on Apply License to go to the License Management page. Look at the Capacity

Expansion Licenses section. Our example shows four Upgrade Kits as licensed.

Click Add License.

Select the Input Type depending upon how you saved the license string. In our example, we saved it as a Key String and can now cut and paste it into the License Key field.

NOTE:

If you saved the key string to a DAT file and have transferred it into the HPE

StoreOnce 5100 System’s licenses directory, you can use the Load License File option,

8.

Click OK. The Capacity Upgrade Kit is now included in the list of Capacity Expansion

Licenses.

To create volumes and expand the file system

1.

Go to Storage and select the Storage Configuration tab. You are prompted to rescan for storage.

2.

Click OK. The Capacity now shows all storage as licensed. Look in the Unconfigured

storage section to view the newly added capacity Upgrade kit(s). The Status should display as Green tick / OK – Blank.

3.

Click the Create Volumes button at the top of the page.

4.

A dialog box will appear that states, Please Wait — Volume Creation in progress.

5.

Volume creation will take up to 5 minutes to complete and during this time, no other actions on the Storage Configuration tab will be available. RAID parity initialization will now start for the newly added storage which will take several hours to complete. When the parity

initialization process completes, the storage expansion status will change to OK – Available

for Expansion

NOTE:

You can choose to wait until parity initialization is complete (recommended) or

expand the file system without waiting. See Parity initialization considerations (page 8).

Click the Expand File System button at the top of the page.

If you have chosen to expand the file system before parity initialization is complete, a warning dialog box will appear that says:

Select Cancel to stop the operation and wait for it to complete (recommended) or click

Expand to continue.

A dialog box will appear that says: Please Wait – File System Expansion is Initializing.

While the expansion is initializing, you will not be able to perform any functions on the

StoreOnce GUI for about 30 seconds.

The Storage Configuration page will show the newly added storage expansions in the

Configured Storage section of the page as soon as the storage expansion starts. All storage expansions, including the base storage, will report a warning state to show that expansion is in progress.

After expansion has completed, the new capacity will be made available for use. Parity

Initialization may still be in progress after expansion completes, and if this is the case then a warning will be shown for each expansion on which parity initialization is still running until it is complete. This is illustrated in the following screen example.

When complete the state will change to show all storage with a Status of OK.

While a storage expansion operation is in progress, no other actions on the Storage

Configuration tab will be available.

Monitoring progress

The easiest way to monitor progress is to look at the Status messages on the Storage

Configuration tab. Information is also available on the Events page and on the Hardware page.

4 Using the StoreOnce CLI

This chapter summarizes how to use the StoreOnce CLI to apply licenses, and discover and add storage. It provides an alternative to using the StoreOnce GUI for users who prefer to work with

StoreOnce CLI commands. For more information refer also to the HPE StoreOnce CLI Reference

Guide.

To access the StoreOnce CLI

Access the StoreOnce CLI from an SSH terminal using an SSH client application (freely available on the internet) using any configured IP address for the appliance and provide an Administrator user name: ssh <username>@<IP address>

At the next prompt, enter the Administrator's password.

Applying the license

1.

If you have saved the license to use as a DAT file, check that it is stored within the licenses folder using the StoreOnce CLI command: system show licenses.

Look for the <LTU>.dat file.

2.

Apply the license using one of the following CLI commands:

• license load <LTU>.dat

to load a license that has been saved as a file. The file must exist in the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System's licenses directory.

• license add <string> to key in the license directly. If you used email or a temporary file, cut and paste the string exactly as you obtained it from the HP Licensing website.

Entering the LTU manually is not advised.

NOTE:

The key is specific to the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System to which it applies. It cannot be transferred.

3.

To ensure that the license has been applied successfully, run the StoreOnce CLI command: license show

Discovering and adding storage

NOTE:

Be sure to apply the licenses for all Capacity Upgrade Kits before running the expansion process.

The easiest way to view the newly added storage enclosure is to log on to the StoreOnce GUI and look at the Storage Management page, as described in the previous chapter.

1.

Check the status of the system and that the service set is running using the following command: system show status

2.

To discover the newly attached storage and create a new Logical Unit (LUN) on this storage use the StoreOnce CLI command: hardware discover storage

3.

Monitor the status of the LUN creation process using the StoreOnce CLI command: hardware show storage status

Look for the Formatted and Discovered information under Status.

IMPORTANT:

It is recommended that at this stage the user waits until Parity initialization is complete for all discovered enclosures before running the hardware add storage command. Doing so significantly reduces the overall time for parity initialization to complete.

4.

Once the discovery process is complete, run the following command in order to format the storage LUN with file system segments: hardware add storage

This command will expand the file system to use the storage. The process can take a long time to complete and the new capacity will not be available until it is finished.

5.

Monitor the expansion using the following command: hardware show status and hardware show storage status

6.

Once the storage is available, performance will return to normal as long as parity initialization was allowed to complete before the hardware add storage command was run.

5 Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting when using the StoreOnce GUI

When you use the StoreOnce GUI to carry out storage management tasks, all validation that the

HPE StoreOnce 5100 System is in the correct state to create volumes and expand the file system is carried out during the Scan for Storage stage.

Any problems that are found are reported with Diagnostic messages and the buttons on the

Storage Management page are greyed out until the problem is resolved. Follow the recommendation in the Diagnostic message to remedy the problem and then scan for storage again.

Areas where problems may occur include:

Licensing will fail:

If you use the wrong node lock key. Verify against the License Management page on the StoreOnce GUI.

If the license dates are invalid. Verify against the Date/Time page on the StoreOnce

GUI to ensure that licenses are not future or past dated.

If you use a license for a different product. Verify the license details.

The storage scan will fail if:

There are insufficient expansion licenses applied to allow the entire expansion to complete (in this case, no expansion will take place until sufficient licenses are present for all added storage). Verify that all licenses have been applied.

There are any failed or predictive fail disks in either the existing or newly added storage.

Verify the status of the disks and replace disks, if required.

The SAS cabling to the new storage or any other storage in the configuration is not connected securely. Verify the physical connections between server and the first storage expansion, and between all daisy-chained storage expansions.

If this is a new installation, where storage is pre-configured, and the storage has been connected to the wrong server. Verify the server serial number on the Capacity Upgrade

Kit label against the serial number on the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System. (This may give a similar error message as the next fault.)

There are foreign logical drives or volumes already present on the attached storage.

These are identified as an unsupported or invalid storage configuration and the dev-id of the volume is provided in the error message. It is necessary to delete the storage, as described in the HPE StoreOnce 3100, 3500 and 5100 Maintenance and Service

Guide.

Hot spare disk and LEDs on the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System

Both the HPE StoreOnce 5100 System and any Capacity Upgrade enclosures have a hot spare disk in bay 12. If one disk fails in the RAIDset, the hot spare disk automatically takes it place until the failed disk is replaced. The behavior of the LEDs on the hot spare disk is as follows:

Head server: The LED is off on the hot spare disk until it becomes active due to the failure of another disk in the RAID set. It is flickering green when in use.

Capacity Upgrade enclosure: The LED is solid green on the hot spare disk until it becomes active due to the failure of another disk in the RAID set. It is flashing green when in use.

HPE StoreOnce 5100 System expansion shelf error messages

Most error messages are reported in the StoreOnce GUI or CLI with appropriate diagnostic messages. However, there are a few instances where problems are not explicitly recorded and it is necessary to check the 7-segment display on the rear of the expansion shelf to identify the error code. Press the System Locate UID button to display the error code.
