Note on DualDiscs
A DualDisc is a two sided disc product which mates DVD recorded material on one side with digital audio material on the other side. However, since the audio material side does not conform to the Compact Disc (CD) standard, playback on this product is not guaranteed.
Music discs encoded with copyright protection technologies
This product is designed to play back discs that conform to the Compact Disc (CD) standard. Recently, various music discs encoded with copyright protection technologies are marketed by some record companies. Please be aware that among those discs, there are some that do not conform to the CD standard and may not be playable by this product.
Note on Multi Session disc
When you play back Multi Session discs with different formats for each session, the format of the first session is recognized as the disc type. Tracks in the second and subsequent sessions are played back if they are the same formats as the first session.

C D-LIGHT SYNC OUT jack
Connect the D-LIGHT SYNC controller.
You need to connect the D-LIGHT SYNC controller to a lighting device* (not supplied). The lighting device will react according to the control signals transmitted by the D-LIGHT SYNC controller upon receiving music source from the system. For details on the use of the D-LIGHT SYNC controller and lighting device, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the respective device.

Connect the power cord on the subwoofer to a wall outlet after you have make all connections. The demonstration appears in the display. When you press "/1, the system turns on and the demonstration automatically ends.
If the supplied adaptor on the plug does not fit your wall outlet, detach it from the plug (only for models equipped with an adaptor).

Using the iPod
Insert the iPod Dock Adapter into the iPod 1 or 2 connector before use.
For details on the supplied iPod Dock
Adapters, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the iPod Dock
Adapter.
Using the remote
Slide and remove the battery compartment lid, and insert the two supplied R6 (size AA) batteries, E side first, matching the polarities shown below.

To remove the iPod Dock Adapter, pull it up with your fingernail or a flat object using the slot inside the adapter.

• If you do not use the remote for a long period of time, remove the batteries to avoid possible damage from battery leakage and corrosion.
• With normal use, the batteries should last for about six months. When the remote no longer operates the system, replace both batteries with new ones.
• Batteries installed devices shall not be exposed to excessive heat such as sunshine, fire or the like.
Attaching the speaker pads
Attach the supplied speaker pads at each corner on the bottom of the front speakers to stabilize the speakers and to prevent them from slipping.

When carrying the unit
Do the following procedure to protect the disc mechanism.
Use the buttons on the unit for the operation.

Press "/1 to turn on the system.

Press CD.

Press A to open the disc tray and remove the disc.

Press A again to close the disc tray. Wait until “No Disc” appears in the display.

Hold down CD and then press
"/1 until “STANDBY” appears in the display. Then, “MECHA
LOCK” appears in the display.

Unplug the AC power cord.
Note
Before carrying the unit, be sure to disconnect the USB device or iPod(s).

Setting the clock
Use buttons on the remote for the operation.

Basic Operations
Playing a CD/MP3 disc

Press CD (or FUNCTION +/– on the remote repeatedly to select
“CD”).

Load a disc with the label side facing up on the disc tray.
When you play back an 8 cm disc such as a
CD single, place it on the inner circle of the tray.

Do not forcibly push the disc tray to close it as this may cause a malfunction.

Press PLAY MODE on the remote repeatedly when playback is stopped. You can select the following play mode.
– Normal Play (all tracks or MP3 files on the disc) (“ ”, “SHUF” and “PGM” light off)
– Normal/Folder Play (all MP3 files in the folder or all tracks on the disc) (“ ”* lights up)
– Shuffle Play (“SHUF” or “ SHUF”* light up)
– Program Play (“PGM” lights up)
* When playing an AUDIO CD, (SHUF)
Play performs the same operation as Normal
(Shuffle) Play.
Notes on playing discs
• The following discs/situations can increase the time it takes to start playback:
– a disc recorded with a complicated tree structure.
– a disc recorded in Multi Session.
– a disc to which data can be added
(non-finalized disc).
– when the files in another folder have just been played back.
• When the disc is loaded, the system reads all the files on that disc. If there are many folders or non-MP3 files on the disc, it may take a longer time for playback to begin or for the next MP3 file to start playback.
• MP3 files are played back in the order that they are recorded onto the disc.
• You are recommended not to save other types of files or unnecessary folders on a disc that has MP3 files.
• The system can only play back MP3 files with the extension “.mp3”.
• Attempting to play back non-MP3 format files that have the extension “.mp3” may result in noise or malfunction.
• A folder that does not include an MP3 file is skipped.
• The system can recognize the maximum of
– 255 folders (including the root folder).
– 511 MP3 files.
– 512 MP3 files and folders on a single disc.
– 8 folder levels.
• Depending on the encoding/writing software, recording device, or the recording media used to record an MP3 file, you may encounter problems such as cannot play back, sound interruptions and noise.

Listening to the radio
Use buttons on the remote for the operation.

Press FUNCTION +/– repeatedly to select FM or AM band.

Press TUNING MODE repeatedly until “AUTO” lights up in the display.

You can also use TUNE +/– on the unit.
Scanning stops automatically when a station is tuned in and “TUNED” lights up in the display. When a FM stereo program is tuned in, “STEREO” lights up in the display.
Note
If “TUNED” does not light up and scanning does not stop, see “To tune in a station with a weak signal” below.

Press TUNING MODE repeatedly until “AUTO” and “PRESET” disappear from the display.

To change the AM tuning interval
(Except for European model)
The factory setting for AM tuning interval is 9 kHz (or 10 kHz for some areas).
Use the buttons on the unit for the operation.

Press TUNER/BAND repeatedly to select AM band.

Press "/1 to turn off the system.

When demonstration appears, hold down ENTER on CHANNEL B and then press "/1.
The system turn on automatically.
“AM 9K STEP” or “AM 10K STEP” appears in the display.
When you change the interval, all the AM preset stations are erased.
Tip
To improve broadcast reception, adjust the supplied antennas, or connect an external antenna.
To reduce static noise on a weak FM stereo station
Press FM MODE on the remote repeatedly until “MONO” lights up in the display.

Transferring onto an
USB device
You can transfer music from a sound source to an optional USB device by connecting it to the (USB) port on the unit.
The audio format transferred by this system is MP3. The approximate size of the transferring is about 1 MB per minute of transferring time (except MP3 disc).
The files those are transferred onto the
USB device is for personal use only.
See “Compatible devices with this system” (page 52) for a list of USB
devices that can be connected to this system.
There are three ways to transfer onto an
USB device.
CD-USB Synchronized Transfer:
You can easily transfer an entire disc onto an USB device.
REC1 Transferring:
You can easily transfer a single track or file from a disc that is currently being played back onto an USB device.
Manual Transferring:
You can transfer just the portion you want from a sound source (except CD).
Notes
• If the BEAT BLEND is activated during
Manual Transferring, the beat sound will be transferred onto the USB device.
• The level of transferred sound during Manual
Transferring is depends on the CROSS
FADER slider position.
Use buttons on the unit for the operation.

You can transfer tracks or files on a disc in the order you want using

automatically changes to Normal Play, if you start transferring in Program
Play with no tracks or files are programmed, Shuffle Play or Repeat
Play.
For REC1 Transferring:
Press CD, then load the disc you want to transfer on the disc tray. Select the track or file you want to transfer, then press HS on CHANNEL B.
For Manual Transferring:
Press the function button (except CD) to select the source you want to transfer.
If you want to record the “mix” sound from 2 audio source, select a function button on both CHANNEL A and B.
The recorded sound is depends on the

Transfer:
Press REC TO USB.
“SYNC” and “REC” light up in the display. Then, transferring starts when
“Don’t Remove USB” appears in the display.
When the transferring is completed, the disc and the USB device stop automatically.
For REC1 Transferring:
Press REC TO USB.
“REC” lights up in the display. Then, transferring starts when “Don’t
Remove USB” appears in the display.
When the transferring is completed, the disc continues to play.
For Manual Transferring:
Press REC TO USB.
“REC” lights up in the display. Then, transferring starts when “Don’t
Remove USB” appears in the display.
Start playback the source to be transferred.
A new file is automatically created after approximately 1 hour of transferring.
You can also create a new file any time during transferring by pressing REC
TO USB. “New Track” appears in the display and transferring continues as a new file.
However, if you press REC TO USB after a few seconds from the new file creation, the file cannot be created and
“Not in Use” appears in the display.
To stop transferring, press x.
Tip
If noise is heard while transferring from the radio, move the respective antenna to reduce the noise.
Notes
• Transferring stops automatically when you change the function or tuner band on
CHANNEL B.
• When a new MP3 file is created, a few seconds of music source would be lost.
To select the transferring destination on the USB device
If the USB device has more than one memory (for example, internal memory and a memory card), you can select which memory to read to and then start transferring.

Notes
• Do not remove the USB device during transferring or erase operations. Doing so may corrupt the data on the USB device or damage the USB device itself.
• Do not connect the system and the USB device through an USB hub.
• You cannot eject the disc during transferring from disc to USB.
• When transferring from an MP3 disc, MP3 files are transferred with the same bit rate as the original MP3 files.
When transferring from other sound source, the tracks are transferred as 128 kbps MP3 files.
• While transferring from an MP3 disc, no sound is output.
• If you cancel the transferring partway, an
MP3 file is created up to the point when the transferring was stopped.
• Transferring stops automatically if:
– the USB device runs out of space during transferring.
– the number of audio files on the USB device reaches the limit for the number that the system can recognize.
• A folder that contains non-audio format files or sub folders cannot be erased.
• The maximum number of folders that can be created on a single USB device by this system is 997.
The maximum number of MP3 files that can be created on a single USB device by this system is 999.
The maximum number of audio files and folders may vary depending on the audio file and folder structure.
• If a folder or file that you are trying to transfer already exists on the USB device with the same name, a sequential number is added after the name without overwriting the original folder or file.
• If you perform transferring after the erase operation, the new transferred files or folders may have the name that same as the erased files or folders. Therefore, the playback sequence may different from the transferring sequence.
Listening to music of an USB device
You can listen to music stored in an optional USB device by connecting it to the (USB) port on the unit.
The audio formats that can be played back by this system are as follows:
MP3*/WMA*/AAC*
When playback from a USB device, you can select the internal memory or memory card as a playback source. For details, see
steps 1 to 6 of “To select the transferring destination on the USB device” (page 22).

Notes on USB device
• The following situations can increase the time it takes to start playback:
– the folder structure is complex.
– the memory capacity is excessive.
• When the USB device is connected, the system reads all the files on the USB device.
If there are many folders or files on the USB device, it may take a long time to finish reading the USB device.
• Do not connect the system and the USB device through an USB hub.
• Depending on the previous operation you have performed with the USB device, the operation time for the USB device may vary.
• If the system is turned off during Resume Play mode, when the system is turned on again playback starts from the beginning of the audio file.
• This system does not necessarily support all the functions provided in a connected USB device.
• The playback order for the system may differ from the playback order of the connected USB device.
• Always hold down x on the unit and make sure that “No Device” appears before removing the USB device. Removing the
USB device while “No Device” is not displayed may corrupt the data on it or damage the USB device itself.
• You are recommended not to save other types of files or unnecessary folders on an USB device that has audio files.
• A folder that does not include an audio file is skipped.
• Files and folders are played back in alphabetical order in this system.
• The system can only play back
– MP3 files with the extension “.mp3”.
– WMA files with the extension “.wma”.
– AAC files with the extension “.m4a”.
Note that even when file names have the above file extensions, if the actual file differs, the system may produce noise or may malfunction.
• The system can recognize the maximum of
– 999 folders.
– 999 audio files.
The maximum number of audio files and folders may vary depending on the audio file and folder structure.
• Compatibility with all encoding/writing softwares, recording devices, and recording media cannot be guaranteed. Incompatible
USB device may produce noise or interrupted audio or may not play back at all.
• Do not carry the unit when the USB device is connected. When you are not using the USB device, disconnect it.
• After you have connected the USB device, be sure to handle the USB device with care otherwise it may cause a malfunction.
Playing the iPod
You can listen to audio contents stored in the iPod on this system.

• To change the volume level, use
VOLUME +/–. The volume level does not change even if adjusted on the iPod.
• This iPod 1 and iPod 2 connector are designed for iPod only. You cannot connect any other portable audio players.
• To use an iPod, refer to the operating instructions of your iPod.
• Sony cannot accept responsibility in the event that data recorded to iPod is lost or damage when using an iPod with this unit.
• Some iPod operations may not be performed using buttons on the unit or remote.

To stop charging the iPod
Remove the iPod. If you stop charging the iPod when the system is off, press
DISPLAY repeatedly until the display is turned off (Power Saving mode).

• The beat tempo input is canceled if you press any buttons other than BPM CONTROL.
• If you input the tempo less than BPM 40,
“Hit Faster” appears in the display. Hit again in faster tempo.
• If you input the tempo more than BPM 200,
“Hit Slower” appears in the display. Hit again in slower tempo.
• If the tempo of the beat pattern does not match the tempo of the music, change the speed manually after you input the tempo.

• You can use the drum pads and the beat function at the same time.
• You can transfer the sound of the drum pad or beat pattern onto a USB device using Manual
Transferring only.
Using the Crossfader
You can isolate the sound from
CHANNEL A and B or blend them together using the Crossfader. By sliding the CROSS FADER slider from one position to another will vary the output signals of the CHANNEL A and B respectively.

Using the Radio Data
System (RDS)
(European model only)
What is the Radio Data System?
Radio Data System (RDS) is a broadcasting service that allows radio stations to send additional information along with the regular program signal.
This tuner offers convenient RDS features like station name. RDS is available only on FM stations.*
* Not all FM stations provide RDS service, nor do they provide the same types of services. If you are not familiar with the RDS system, check with your local radio stations for details on RDS services in your area.
Note
RDS may not work properly if the station you are tuned in is not transmitting the RDS signal properly or if the signal is weak.
Receiving RDS broadcasts
Simply select a station from FM band.
When you tune in a station that provides
RDS services, the station name appears in the display.
To check the RDS information
While receiving an RDS station, press DISPLAY repeatedly.
RDS information appears on the display.
Ajusting the sound effect
You can adjust the sound by raising or lowering the level of specific frequency band.
Turn LOW jog to adjust the level of low frequency band.
Turn MID jog to adjust the level of medium frequency band.
Turn HIGH jog to adjust the level of high frequency band.
The setting is entered automatically.
Singing along
You can sing along with any audio source that play back on this system.

Using the timer
The system offers three timer functions.
Sleep Timer
You can set the system to turn off after a certain time, so that you can fall asleep to music.
Press SLEEP on the remote repeatedly.
The minute display (turn-off time) changes.
If you select “AUTO”, the system automatically turns off after the current disc or USB device stops or after 100 minutes. When you played back the source on CHANNEL A and B simultaneously, the system will turns off after the playback on CHANNEL B stops.
Do not select “AUTO” during CD-USB
Synchronized Transfer or the erase operation.
Note
The system is not turned off on the preset time during the USB erase operation.
The system will only automatically turns off after the USB erase operation finish.
Tip
To check the remaining time, press SLEEP on the remote once. However, you cannot check the remaining time if you select “AUTO”.
Play Timer/Recording Timer
You cannot activate both the Play Timer and the Recording Timer at the same time.
If you use either with the Sleep Timer, the
Sleep Timer has priority.
Make sure you have set the clock.
Use the buttons on the remote for the operation.
Play Timer:
You can wake up to music from disc, iPod 2, tuner or optional USB device at a preset time.
You can only set the Play Timer for audio source on CHANNEL B only.
Recording Timer:
You can transfer onto a transferable USB device from a preset station at a specified time.

Additional Information
Troubleshooting
Should you encounter a problem with your system, do the following:
1
Make sure the power cord and speaker cords are connected correctly and firmly.
2
Find your problem in the troubleshooting checklist below and take the indicated corrective action.
If the problem persists after doing all of the above, consult your nearest Sony dealer.
Note that if service personnel changes some parts during repair, these parts may be retained.
In the event of a problem, have a Sony dealer check the entire system together.
When the STANDBY indicator flashes
Immediately unplug the power cord on the subwoofer and check the following items.
• If your subwoofer have a voltage selector, is the voltage selector set to the correct voltage?
Check the voltage for your region, then make sure the voltage selector is set correctly.
• Are the + and – speaker cords shortcircuited?
• Are you using the supplied speakers?
• Is anything blocking the ventilation holes on the rear of the unit?
After checking the above items and fixing any problems, plug in the power cord again and turn on the system. If the STANDBY indicator still flashes, or if the cause of the problem cannot be found even after checking all the above items, consult your nearest
Sony dealer.
General
The display starts flashing as soon as you plug in the power cord even though you have not turned on the system.

Shuffle Play mode. Press PLAY MODE on the remote repeatedly until both
“PGM” and “SHUF” light off in the display.
The MP3 file cannot be played back.
• The MP3 file is not recorded in a format that conforms to ISO9660 Level 1/
Level 2, or Joliet (expansion format).
• The MP3 file does not have the extension “.mp3”.
• The MP3 file in format other than
MPEG 1 Audio Layer 3 cannot be played back.
• The system can play back to a depth of
8 folders only.
• The disc contains more than 256 folders.
• The disc contains more than 511 MP3 files.
• MP3 files in MP3 PRO format cannot be played back.
The MP3 files take a longer time to play back than others.
• After the system reads all the files on the disc, playback may take more time than usual if:
– the number of folders or files on the disc is very large.
– the folder and file organization structure is very complex.
The folder name, track name, file name and ID3 tag characters do not appear properly.
• Use a disc that conforms to ISO9660
Level 1/Level 2, or Joliet (expansion format).
• The ID3 tag is not version 1 or version 2.
• The character code that can be displayed by this system are as follows:
– Upper cases (A to Z)
– Lower cases (a to z)
– Numbers (0 to 9)
– Symbols (< > * +, ? / [ ] \ _)
Other characters may not be displayed correctly.
• ID3 tag information for MP3 audio files is displayed when the files have ID3 version 1 or ID3 version 2. If there are
ID3 version 1 and version 2 tags, ID3 version 2 tag information has priority.
USB device
You cannot start transferring to an
USB device.
• The following problems may have occurred.
– The USB device is full.
– The number of audio file and folder that system can recognize has reached the upper limit.
– The USB device is write-protected.
Transferring is stopped before it is finished.
• You are using an unsupported USB
device. See “Compatible devices with this system” (page 52) for the supported
device types.
• The USB device is not formatted correctly. Refer to the USB device operating instructions for how to format.
• Turn off the system and remove the
USB device. Then, turn on the system.
If the USB device has a power switch, turn the USB device off and then on again after removing it from the system.
Then perform transferring again.
• If the transferring and erase operations are repeated multiple times, the file structure within the USB device becomes complex. Refer to operating instructions of the USB device on how to remedy this problem.
Transferring to an USB device results in an error.
• You are using an unsupported USB
device. See “Compatible devices with this system” (page 52) for the supported
device types.
• The USB device was disconnected or the power was turned off during transferring. Delete the partiallytransferred file, and transfer again. If this does not fix the problem, the USB device may be broken. Refer to operating instructions of the USB device on how to remedy this problem.
• Turn off the system and remove the
USB device. If the USB device has a power switch, turn the USB device off and then on again after removing it from the system. Then perform transferring again.
Audio files or folders on the USB device cannot be erased.
• Check if the USB device is writeprotected.
• The USB device was disconnected or the power was turned off during the erase operation. Delete the partiallyerased track. If this does not fix the problem, the USB device may be broken. Refer to operating instructions of the USB device on how to remedy this problem.
Are you using a supported USB device?
• If you connect an unsupported USB device, the following problems may
occur. See “Compatible devices with this system” (page 52) for the supported
device types.
– The USB device is not recognized.
– File or folder names are not displayed on this system.
– Playback is not possible.
– The sound skips.
– There is noise.
– A distorted sound is output.
– Transferring stops before it is finished.

• A problem has been detected with the level of electrical current from the

USB) port. Turn off the system and remove the USB device from the

“No Medium” appears in display.
• Check the memory device on the Sony
Ericsson mobile phone.
There is no sound.
• The USB device is not connected correctly. Turn off the system, then connect the USB device again and check if “USB MEMORY” lights up in the display.
There is noise, skipping, or distorted sound.
• Turn off the system, then connect the
USB device again.
• The music data itself contains noise, or the sound is distorted. Noise may have entered during the transferring process.
Delete the file, and try transferring again.
The USB device cannot be connected into the (USB) port.
• The USB device is being connected backwards. Connect the USB device in the correct orientation.
“USB Reading” is displayed for an extended time, or it takes a long time before playback starts.
• The reading process can take a long time in the following cases.
– There are many folders or files on the
USB device.
– The file structure is extremely complex.
– The memory capacity is excessive.
– The internal memory is fragmented.
Thus, we recommend following these guidelines.
– Total folders on USB device: 100 or less
– Total files per folder: 100 or less
Erroneous display.
• The data stored in the USB device may have been corrupted, perform the transferring again.
• The character code that can be displayed by this system are as follows:

The sound is distorted.
• Reduce the volume.
• Set the “EQ” setting of the iPod to “Off” or “Flat”.

Tuner

• Set the proper band and frequency
• Connect the antenna properly (page 13).

On safety
• The unit is not disconnected from the AC power source (mains) as long as it is connected to the wall socket, even if the unit itself has been turned off.
• Completely disconnect the power cord (mains lead) from the wall socket (mains) if it is not going to be used for an extended period of time. When unplugging the unit, always grip the plug. Never pull the cord itself.
• Should any solid object or liquid get into the system, unplug the system, and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it again.
• The AC power cord can be changed only by a qualified service facility.
On placement
• Do not place the system in an inclined position or in locations that are extremely hot, cold, dusty, dirty, or humid or lacking adequate ventilation, or subject to vibration, direct sunlight or a bright light.
• Be careful when placing the unit or speakers on surfaces that have been specially treated
(for example, with wax, oil, polish) as staining or discoloration of the surface may result.
• If the system is brought directly from a cold to a warm location or is placed in a very damp room, moisture may condense on the lens inside the unit, and cause the system to malfunction. In this situation, remove the disc, and leave the system turned on for about an hour until the moisture evaporates.
On heat buildup
• Heat buildup on the unit during operation is normal and is not a cause for alarm.
• Do not touch the cabinet if it has been used continuously at a high volume because the cabinet may have become hot.
• Do not obstruct the ventilation holes.
On the speaker system
This speaker system is not magnetically shielded, and the picture on nearby TV sets may become magnetically distorted. In this situation, turn off the TV, wait 15 to 30 minutes, and turn it back on. If there is no improvement, move the speakers far away from the TV.
Cleaning the cabinet
Clean this system with a soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent solution.
Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder, or solvent, such as thinner, benzine, or alcohol.
Notes on remove/insert the SYSTEM
CONTROL cord from/to the unit
To prevent the system malfunction or breakdown, do the following procedures:
– Before connecting the power cord (on the subwoofer) to the wall outlet, be sure to connect the SYSTEM CONTROL cord to the unit and secure with screws of the plug.
– Before removing the SYSTEM CONTROL cord from the unit, be sure to disconnect the power cord (on the subwoofer) from the wall outlet.
