Introduction
Sony ® Home Audio and Video Products had a tremendous
year in 2010 and continued in 2011. From legacy products
to newer entertainment products, Sony brought new
ideas forward. Be it a DVD sound system that allowed
even the most technically challenged to easily rip their
CDs to their Walkman® digital player, or bringing out the
ability to control Blu-ray Disc™ Players with iPhone ®, iPod
touch® and compatible Android™ devices, Sony expanded
the value of home entertainment products. In fact, the
goal for 2010 was to make Blu-ray Disc™ players a daily
entertainment device and not the few hours a week
device that DVD players were. Mission accomplished! Sony
customers are enjoying their players and systems more
than ever and doing things with them consumers might
not have thought possible just 2 years ago. From watching
movies to listening to music for hours every day, the value
of a Sony Player, System, or Receiver is unbelievable.
2011 is an exciting year when Sony expands the value of
its Home Audio and Video products exponentially, and
your customer is the beneficiary. Sony Entertainment
Network services will continue to increase. Media Remote
adds new and very helpful functionality. New products
from CD Players to shelf systems and even Sony’s first
portable Blu-ray Disc player hit the market too.
2011 is also the year that brings to your customers one of
the most exciting technologies to come to audio in years.
For most of your customers Multi-room audio meant
turning up the volume on the audio system so you could
hear it in another room. Sure, there have been expensive
wired solutions for awhile, but Sony is proud to bring out
HomeShare™ technology. It allows your customers to stream
music from their new HomeShare-compatible Blu-ray Disc™
Players and systems and then simply send that audio to
inexpensive but great sounding speakers that they can buy
and pepper throughout the house, leveraging an existing
home network. What’s even better is there are iPod ® docs
that also can stream audio content and the system can even
work with any Windows® 7 PC. Your customers will have
complete control of all of the audio content using their
iPhone ® or iPod touch® or even get a unique remote that
doubles as a learning IR remote. All of these products can
allow for multiple streams of music to multiple locations
or even time all the speakers using Party Streaming™
technology to play music all at the same time without
missing a beat. Yes, the company that invented the idea
of bringing your music with you is liberating your home to
allow you to listen to what you want wherever you want in
your home.
Sony has a vision and has worked hard to make their Home
Audio and Video products work together and add value to
be more than the sum of their parts. We’re confident that
these factors and your valued commitment will keep movie
and music fans turning to Sony, America’s favorite Home
Entertainment Company.

Blu-ray Disc™ technology allows for stunning picture and sound
quality that lets your customers completely lose themselves
in a movie. To date no other home media allows the picture
quality and uncompressed audio experience that Blu-ray Disc™
technology can offer.
For some customers though, that’s not enough. They want
selection and choice for content that may not be on a disc in
their present collection. For these customers, Sony is proud to
offer the Sony Entertainment Network, an unparalleled choice
of content and applications built into the BDP-S380,
BDP-S480, BDP-S580, BDP-S780, BDV-E580, BDV-E780W and

How to Demo Sony Entertainment Network
The best way to sell devices with Sony Entertainment
Network is to demonstrate it.
If you don’t have an Internet connection on the shelf where
the unit will reside, make sure to bring the player to a
connection and set it up. Some services like Pandora ® can’t
be demonstrated but for those that can follow these steps:
1. Connect the player to a TV and to a high speed Internet
connection either using an internet cable or Wi-Fi®.
2. Turn the unit on.
3. Go through the easy first time set up that should come
up (If it doesn’t, go to the far left on the menu system
and scroll down to Setup. Follow the directions and
when it asks about turning on “quick start”, choose
Yes. This will allow the unit to power up in seconds.
4. Scroll down to Internet Settings - follow the directions
and make sure the Internet connection is working.
5. Once the Internet is connected hit the “home” button
and scroll over to the right where it says video.
6. The first time you choose the Video
section it will automatically go to the web
and load the services available.
Now you are ready to show the services. Obviously if the
player is taken to an area that doesn’t have an Internet
connection you can just scroll through the service providers
that you previously loaded on the player and explain what
they are. Here are a couple of more simple tips to follow
before you show off the player:
Go to YouTube and search for something safe
and appropriate for your customers to view. The
player has the ability to remember what your most
recent searches are. This is critical because, while
YouTube does a good job keeping inappropriate
matter off their service you don’t want to be
showing off anything that might offend your
customers. Having the pre-made search allows
for you to feel better about showing off the
player. Another side benefit is that the player
can loop the YouTube videos and keep playing.
When showing leave the video running in the
small window so people can see that they are
looking at YouTube and not a bad video feed. If
your customer wants to see the image full screen
you can hit the “right” arrow on the circular area
of the remote and then hit the center button in
that circle. This will bring a full screen up. You
might be able to cycle through the screen sizes
depending on the video by hitting the up or down
button on the circle. To go back to the YouTube
search list with video simply hit “return”.
Go to the Audio area of the player’s menu system
and you will see the Slacker icon. You should
show this off to talk about Personalized Radio
streaming. What is really cool about Slacker is
that the service is free and the user can rate
songs or artists to personalized their stations.
Features and specification subject to change.
8
How to Demo Sony Entertainment Network
Simply go to the service and show off the selection
that’s available . Choose from Movies, TV or
”Find More“. It‘s all very intuitive and allows
your customer to easily see what is available.
Make sure to explain that any “purchases“ (not
rentals) your customers make will stay in their
Library and will be available for streaming again
and again and the service hosts the content.
That means no lost or damaged media.
National Public Radio can be found in the
Audio menu of the on screen menu. Select it
and you can show your customer a whole large
range of content from Economy and Politics to
Technology, Books, Music and News. Let your
customer surf the content and they will see that
there are hours and hours of listening available.
One of the best known video services is available
in these players. Many of your customers
already have the service so it is important to
mention it. You should beware though, that it
is difficult to show this service because it does
require an unlimited subscription service.
With so many recognizable applications available there is a
very good chance that your customer has been exposed to
some of the applications on their PC or another device. If this
is the case, they might have already created accounts to some
of the applications with unique user names and passwords.
To make linking those accounts with these Sony Entertainment
Network compatible players easy, Sony has created a website
that your customers can go to. Your customer will simply need
to go to http://internet.Sony.tv and register their players
through this site. Once they do this they will be able to access
their accounts and applications through the player.
To be clear...most of the services don‘t need any accounts and
can be used right away!
If there is any down side to these applications it is that there is
almost too much to watch and listen to.
How will your customers find things?
Most people like to surf and find things on their own but if
they are looking for something specific, Sony Entertainment
Network devices make it easy. There is a search tool in
the Video section of the menu that allows customers to
specify what content they wish to search for. Show your
customers that they can Search Titles, Descriptions, and
even see their previous searches. This makes a search using
a word like “Food“ very easy as the player will go through
many of the services and find things associated with
that search term. It doesn't get any easier than that .
It is also important to point out to your customer that they
need an Internet connection speed of at least 2.5 Mbps
recommended (10Mbps for HD content). The video quality and
picture size vary and are dependent upon broadband speed and
delivery by content provider. Also, all of this selected content
provided is subject to change.

HomeShare™ Multi-Room Audio
HomeShare™ Multi-Room Audio
HOMESHARE MULTI-ROOM AUDIO
Customize a music experience
that’s perfect for your home.
Easily stream music to every
room with Sony’s latest innovation - HomeShare.
It’s easy to use, highly customizable, and puts you in control
of your entire home’s music entertainment. All you need to
get started is a home network, a HomeShare-compatible or
DLNA® compliant source device, and one HomeShare speaker,
available in two convenient sizes. Add additional HomeShare
products and see how easy it is to expand your experience
throughout your home. Share music from your connected
iPod ® or iPhone ® library, stream from online services like
Slacker ®, vTuner™, Pandora ® and Qriocity™.1 Listen to music
in one room, or share it throughout your home using Party
Streaming™ mode. And the best part? Control of it all, is
easy and fun. Just download the Sony “Network Audio
Remote” app for your iPhone ®2 or use the included remote.
It starts with just one speaker Over the last few years,
you’ve turned your PC into a digital jukebox, we’re now
offering you the flexibility of unlocking that music and
allowing you to stream it to a Sony speaker. When it comes
to providing great sound in small spaces, Sony is the expert.
The compact SA-NS300 and the larger SA-NS400 & SA-NS500
are perfect solutions for a bedroom, office or kitchen. The
SA-NS300 contains a full-range driver that spreads sound in
a 360° pattern. So, customers can place the speaker almost
anywhere in the room. The SA-NS400 & SA-NS500 feature
a remarkable four-driver array and a powerful, built-in
subwoofer that also spreads sound in a 360° pattern. Thanks
to the omnidirectional sound, no matter how you enjoy music
you’re going to enjoy great sound. Simply connect these
speakers to the same home network as a DLNA compliant PC
and let the audio flow. The Speakers even have an Ethernet
port, build-in Wi-Fi® and a line-in for maximum flexibility.
1. Wireless 802.11 home network with a broadband
internet connection required. Audio quality may vary
and is dependent upon broadband speed and delivery
by content provider.
10
2. Application must be downloaded from the iTunes®
or Android Market™ application store. Requires that
the wireless speaker, PC and the remote device be
connected to the same network.
With a 2011 Blu-ray Disc™ Player or System (listed in this
book but not BDP-S185) and the SMP-N200 Network Media
Player, your customer will have a plethora of audio options.
From streamed content like Pandora ® and Slacker™ to CDs, USB
connected devices and even DLNA® connected media storage
devices and PCs. All of this content can be untethered and sent
to multiple rooms throughout the house by having SA-NS300
and SA-NS400 Speakers in other rooms. As an added bonus,
we updated last year’s BDV-E370, BDV-E570 and BDV-E770W.
With updated firmware, customers that own these 2010 models
can take advantage of the same great experience of wirelessly
streaming audio throughout the home. This year’s BDV-E580,
BDV-E780W, and BDV-HZ970 already have this capability.
Customers with an iPhone ® or iPod® might want to place the
device on a dock and share that content throughout the house
in much the same way. Sony is listening. Both the NAS-SV20i
and NAC-SV10i are docks that allow you to not only charge
your iPhone/iPod, but stream the audio generated in them to
these HomeShare speakers. 3 They also feature built in Internet
Audio service capabilities for services like Slacker™ and vTuner™.1
Nowadays, most FM and AM radio stations simulcast on the
web. vTuner allows you to search for stations all over the world
to listen to. Best of all, because it’s digital, you might find the
quality of your local stations to be better than a typical home
AM/FM radio. Don’t worry, these models both support AM/FM
stations as well. Both the SV20i and SV10i also offer an auxiliary
input for local listening. We’ve taken this input one step further
allowing the connected device to also be shared when using
Party Streaming function. This means no matter where you have
your music stored, it can be experienced throughout the home.
1. Wireless 802.11 home network with a broadband
internet connection required. Audio quality may vary
and is dependent upon broadband speed and delivery
by content provider.
11
HomeShare™ Multi-Room Audio
HomeShare™ Multi-Room Audio
The NAS-SV20i has built-in, powerful speakers and can double
PARTY MODE
as a HomeShare speaker like the SA-NS300 or SA-NS400. The
NAC-SV10i doesn’t have speakers, but does have RCA analog
out jacks. This allows the NAC-SV10i to work with traditional AV
Receivers. It’s an easy way to add network capability to an older
AV Receiver.
So how does your customer control it all? Sony has a free
App available in the iTunes® Store. Simply search for “Network
Audio Remote” and download that application to easily control
all the HomeShare audio components.1 See what content is
available and where to send it. They will have control of all the
speakers and components.
Your customer might want to buy multiple speakers. We
do suggest a maximum of up to 10 speakers if the system is
using a Wi-Fi® router. This means that each room can have
different streams of audio in every location. The system is
flexible enough to support that. With the free “Network Audio
Remote” app or the RMN-U1, you can control all the sources
and speakers anywhere on the network. But, sometimes you
want all the speakers playing the same thing — introducing
Party Streaming™ mode. When activated from a source or
speaker, that stream is then sent to all of the other components.
Should you have an Audio source with a headphone out, you
can even plug that into the components and share that content
throughout the house (cable not included). Don’t worry, we
also enabled HomeShare products to be de-selected making
sure that the products sharing the song are in the locations
where you would like music playing. The HomeShare products
also have the ability to have more than one party occurring at
the same time. For instance, if you are listening to Pandora ®
through your Sony BD Player and a Network Speaker, you can
still create a separate party with additional Network Speakers
and alternate source device like your PC.
As a leader in home theater, we couldn’t resist but to also
offer an activity based Universal remote with WiFi. This remote
will allow your customer to control all of their traditional IR
devices with this 5-inch touch screen learning remote.
It can be programmed with macro activities for one button
control. Since this is also WiFi connected and a true DLNA®
controller it will let them browse content stored in the PC,
or network services generated in the dock and send audio to
HomeShare speakers. Since this controls DLNA product as well,
photos and video can also be sent to DLNA video devices.
Watch TV from your set top box while using the audio system to
provide outstanding sound. Others in the house can still use the system
to play from a supported MP3 player in the appropriate dock and
stream that sound to other rooms.
PARTY STREAMING™ TECHNOLOGY BUILT IN
The underlying technology behind
HomeShare functionality is the industry
standard DLNA®. This isn’t the DLNA
of years past. There have been vast improvements coupled
with the introduction of Windows®7, so now streaming audio
content is easy and stable. This also means that products
from other companies down the road might also play with
the system. Understanding that customers would want to
synchronize a listening experience for whole-home audio,
1. Requires that both the source device and iPhone be
connected to the same home network with the iPhone
connected through an 802.11 access point (802.11n
recommended).
12
13
HomeShare™ Multi-Room Audio
we’ve added in a Sony unique technology called Party
Streaming™ mode. In conventional multi-room audio products,
audio is sent from the source to speakers at the same time.
So rooms that are closer might actually play the sound sooner
than rooms further away. This can create timing issues where
if you decide to send audio all over the house, you may
experience “echoing” effects walking from room to room.
Sony has solved that with Party Streaming Technology built
into all of our HomeShare compatible products including
docks, network speakers and Blu-ray systems. When Party
mode is activated, the systems all talk to each other and
measure the time it takes for audio to reach every component.
The stream of audio is synchronized to allow for all the
speakers to fire on the same notes at the same time.
Media Remote
Have you ever wanted to access information about a movie
while watching that very same movie with someone else? Your
customer now has multiple options to see this data. They can
stop the film and pull up the extras area of the film to find out,
but that‘s not optimal as the other person would also have to
stop their viewing of the film. Now, they can pull up the options
while the movie is playing and look at the data.
Now you are saying, “Yeah but that second option makes the
secondary viewer have to see the data too. If only there were a
way for someone to watch the movie on the TV while someone
else can see the data on another screen.“ Well, the engineers at
Sony have thought of that. Read on to see how...
MEDIA REMOTE
TYPICAL USER SCENARIOS
PC customer - Your customer has a Windows® 7 PC or DLNA
enabled PC and a wireless home network, and wants to send
audio tracks to another room. Sell them an SA-NS300 or
SA-NS400 Speaker. The docks work in the same fashion but
add the flexibility of streaming services and docking an iPod ®
device. First make sure they are using the latest Windows
Media Player.
iPod ® customer - Your customer wants a dock. Why not sell
them a NAS-SV20i and a SA-NS300 or SA-NS400 solution that
allows the iPod content to stream to other rooms?
Blu-ray™ Player/System or SMP-N100 customer - They may
have bought this player or be considering it. Why not add to
the value of the system by throwing audio to other rooms
with SA-NS300, SA-NS400 speakers or the NAC-SV10i or
NAS-SV20i docks?
Want to work in the office or bedroom and have the services
that your dock or system offers? - Just buy speakers. Want
these capabilities and CD playback? The CMT-MX700Ni shelf
system will also work like a speaker as well so that office shelf
system can double as a HomeShare Speaker as well.
Many of your customers have an iPhone ®, iPod touch®, or
Android™ device. Sony is proud to announce that the BDP-S380,
BDP-S480, BDP-S580, BDP-S780, BDV-E580, BDV-E780W,
And BDV-HZ970 players will work with a free app.1 This adds
increased functionality to the players in various ways.
First, it is a SIMPLE REMOTE that allows your
customer to navigate through the graphic
user menus. Simply glide a finger over the
screen and move the on-screen cursor. Tap
the center and that works like hitting enter
on a traditional remote.
It is also a FULL REMOTE that allows your
customer most of the same buttons as on a
traditional remote.
CONCLUSION
Simplicity and flexibility … That’s what defines the HomeShare
family of products. The systems can be as simple as a PC and
speaker or as elaborate as multiple docks, speakers and a BD
System. Don’t overwhelm your customers with options but
present HomeShare as a way to get the maximum value out of
the devices they are already shopping for, already have, or plan
to add. The flexibility and value of HomeShare is tremendous.
It really is liberating to have simple, good sounding audio in
multiple rooms of the house without having to turn up that
volume knob in the living room.
The FULL REMOTE part of the remote also
offers something the supplied traditional
remote doesn‘t. It offers a full keyboard that
makes searching for content on the Sony
Entertainment Network applications easier.
Now, how cool is that?
1. Application must be downloaded from the iTunes®
application store or Android™ Market. Requires
that Blu-ray Disc Player and the compatible device
14
be connected to the same home network with the
compatible device connected through an 802.11 access
point (802.11n recommended).
15
Media Remote
The Media Remote App also offers some
increased capabilities over last year’s “BD
Remote” App. These abilities work with all of
the aforementioned Blu-ray Disc™ Players and
Systems with the exception of the BDV-HZ970.
As with last year’s application, Media Remote
allows you to insert a disc into the player and
get meta data such as the jacket art and cast
and crew.
New this year is the ability to actually search
services like Wikipedia® and Twitter™ right from
the application.
Key Information
WI-FI AND WI-FI READY WITH ADAPTER
Optional UWA-BR100 USB Wi-Fi Adapter
With the exception of the BDP-S185, this year’s Blu-ray Disc™
players and systems all can work with your customer’s own
home Wi-Fi® network but some might need an optional
UWA-BR100 Wi-Fi adaptor. To best assist your customer in
their decision it’s important to know which players/systems
needs the accessory and which don’t.
X The BDP-E280, BD-S380 and BDP-S480 will require the purchase of
the accessory if your customer wants Wi-Fi capability with those
players/systems.
But wait … there is more….
X The BDV-HZ970 has the accessory in the box.
The remote has the ability to show thumbnails of the content
available and allow you to select content to play through the
player/system … Yes that’s right … you can now cue up what
you want to view or listen to next right from the application.
That means that no matter where you are in the house, as long
as your iPhone ®, iPad ®, or iPod touch ® is on the same home
network as the player and system, you can browse content and
select it remotely. Listening to music without the TV on?
No need to turn on the TV to see what content is available
and play it.
X The BDV-E580, BDV-E780W, BDP-S580, and BDP-S780 all come with
Wi-Fi built in so there is no need for the accessory.
TRAY LOCK
One last tip ... Since you are a professional, we know that you
like to demonstrate great content to your customers. The big
problem with that, though, is when you turn your back, that
content goes walking. To prevent that from happening simply
hold down the Play and the Eject button for 5 Seconds to lock
the tray. To remove the lock do the same procedure for another
5 seconds.
Another trick up its sleeve is the ability to program an action
based on a movement of the device. Want a quick way to pause
what you are watching? Simply program in that shaking the
device pauses playback. Maybe you want the action to be mute?
You could have that if you wish. Choose what you want it to
do. Once programmed it’s as easy as a shake of the device to do
what you want it to do.
There are a couple of things you should be aware of:
1. The device using the BD remote application has to be on the same network
as the player. That means that the device must be using WiFi ®.
2. There is a settings screen on the bottom right side of the application. A
customer must select that and ”Add device“ and from the Player go into
settings and follow the steps to marry the two devices.

The Sony® 3D Story
Explore an alien planet. Immerse yourself in
a live concert. Cover your head as it starts
raining food. The digital 3D revolution that
started in movie theaters has come home.
And Sony is in the forefront.
SONY: DRIVING 3D FROM THE
LENS TO THE LIVING ROOM
Just as Sony’s involvement in high definition is total, Sony is
helping drive 3D across the board. Knowledge transfer from
Sony’s work on the sound stages of 3D Hollywood movies, the
broadcast trucks of 3DTV sports and the projection rooms of
3D movie theaters gives Sony engineers a unique advantage
in supporting 3D in home audio/video components.
The Sony® 3D Story
WHAT CUSTOMERS NEED TO ENJOY 3DTV
To experience superb 3D at home, your customers will need
the following:
X 3D Content and Source/Player. This can include 3D
compatible cable, satellite, over-the-air broadcasting and
most especially Blu-ray Disc™ media and players.
X 3D Television or Projector with 3D glasses. Of course, these
3D displays can also show conventional HD and even SD
programming, so one display can serve all your customers’
entertainment needs.
X Home theater system (recommended). Nothing completes
the depth effect of 3D viewing like the depth effect of
surround sound.
X 3D Cabling. 3D requires a ”high speed“ HDMI™ cable, one
that supports connection speeds of at least 10.2 Gbps.
BLU-RAY 3D™ VIDEO
HD enthusiasts already know that Blu-ray Disc players deliver
amazing HD quality. They’re capable of bit rates far exceeding
either broadcast channels or typical cable TV and satellite TV.
This distinction continues in the world of 3D.
Cable, satellite and broadcast 3D sources typically deliver halfHD resolution, where the conventional HD frame is made to
carry both left-eye and right-eye pictures. Whether ”Top and
Bottom“ or ”Side by Side,“ these methods sacrifice resolution
for the sake of 3D.

Sony supports 3D from the studios of Hollywood and the
arenas of pro sports to the local theater and the living room.
3D PICTURES CATCH UP TO 3D SOUND
For decades, surround sound such as the Sony Dynamic Digital
Sound (SDDS ®) system has provided a sense of depth in the
movie theater. Home theater has long had the ability to
recreate that depth in the living room. Succeeding generations
of home theater sound have used digital recording and
sophisticated encoding to greatly enhance the immersive
feeling. And Sony A/V receivers go even further with Digital
Cinema Sound™ modes. Now with the launch of 3DTV, the
pictures finally deliver the depth that sound has had for
decades. Home theater surround sound and 3D were made
for each other. 3D is the latest reason to step up from the
television’s speakers to true home theater surround sound.
18
On 1080-line content, ”Side-by-Side“ 3D coding takes the left and
right images (top) and squeezes into one frame (bottom) to deliver
960 x 1080 pixels to each eye.
L
R
On 1080-line content, ”Top-and-Bottom“ 3D coding delivers 1920 x
540 pixels to each eye.
19
The Sony® 3D Story
The Blu-ray 3D™ format Disc transcends this limitation by
super-sizing the HD frame. Using a technology called Frame
Packing, Blu-ray 3D players can output frames that are double
the conventional size. This enables full HD resolution for the
left eye and full HD resolution for the right. You get the best
available 3D reproduction in the home — rivaled only by the
movie theater itself.

X HomeShare™ Technology built into some of the players
allows you to extend your audio enjoyment into
other rooms when used with optional accessories.
BLU-RAY 3D™ SOUND
The sound tracks of Blu-ray 3D media can also exceed the
performance of other entertainment sources. At the studio’s
option, Blu-ray 3D media can incorporate uncompressed Linear
PCM multi-channel sound tracks and the mathematically lossless
compression of Dolby ® TrueHD and dts ® -HD Master Audio.
The advance in sound quality is substantial. To hear it, your
customers need an up-to-date home audio system.
Sony AV receivers go even further with a technology called
Digital Cinema Sound™ processing, based on our expertise
in the movie business. Sony Pictures Entertainment includes
Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Classics and
TriStar Pictures. Our Culver City lot includes 22 sound stages,
ample post production facilities and disc mastering. Movie
projects from other studios line up to take advantage of the
acoustics of our meticulously designed mixing stages, while
our scoring stage is a Hollywood favorite. The knowledge
we gain in movie production is reflected in our audio/video
components. And we even reproduce the acoustics of our
mixing and scoring stages with incredible precision, thanks to
our latest Digital Cinema Sound modes.
The greatest minds in Hollywood are always looking to improve
the way you see movies. So the leaders in the entertainment
industry came together to create a better way for you to enjoy
movies at home. Now with Blu-ray Disc™ technology you can
watch your favorite movies in the highest resolution possible
in your home: Full HD 1080p3, with uncompromising audio.
Here’s what you need to know…
X Blu-ray Disc players can play your existing DVD library
as well as Blu-ray Disc™ HD content (up to 1080p1).

Blu-ray Disc™ Audio
Near Theater quality “uncompressed” audio
— Thanks to a faster bit rate and more
storage space, Blu-ray Disc™ technology
can help realize greater picture quality and
provide up to 7.1 ”uncompressed“ channels
of Linear PCM surround sound (depending
on the media). The Blu-ray Disc™ format is
also capable of supporting advanced audio
formats like Dolby ® TrueHD or dts ® HD.
This can translate to an audio experience
closer to the way the director intended
and more theater-like than ever before
right into your customers living room.
Dolby® TrueHD1 — Delivers lossless studio
master quality audio designed specifically
for high definition entertainment. An
incredible sound stage, dynamic range
and a stellar Home Theater experience
await you with Dolby TrueHD.
dts® -HD1 — Deliver sound quality that
matches the crystal clear images of
Blu-ray Disc™ media. With up to 7.1
channels of surround sound and audio
that is nearly identical to the original
studio version, dts® -HD promises you an
extraordinary surround experience.
One other quick note ... Because of the
sheer amount of data involved, lossless
Blu-ray Disc Audio can only be carried over
a HDMI™ cable. This means that any system
that is using digital coax or digital optical
cables is not delivering the best audio
possible from Blu-ray Disc technology.
Why Sony® Audio
At Sony, audio is more than a business. It’s a passion that
dates back to our first product, an audio mixing console.
It’s a legacy reflected in our company’s name, derived from
sonus, Latin for sound. And it’s an obsession that carries
though all our work.
X Sony is an innovator in audio. Pursuing our passion,
we helped usher in transistorized audio in the 1950s,
personal audio in the 1970s, digital audio in the
1980s, home theater in the 1990s, not to mention
audio for high definition and 3D entertainment today.
Understanding the needs of our Consumers, Sony did
much to bring the receiver from the Audio realm into
the Audio/Video realm and was the first company to
put a graphical User Interface into an AV receiver.
X Sony is a professional audio/video company. Sony
microphones and portable PCM recorders are legendary.
Sony professional video is a fixture from broadcasting
to indie films to Hollywood blockbusters. Our Sony
Dynamic Digital Sound (SDDS ®) system is a fixture in
movie theaters. Because we know exactly how audio/
video content is produced, we understand exactly
how it should be reproduced in the home.
X Sony is one of the world’s largest music companies.
Sony Music Entertainment includes some labels
you might have heard of: Arista, BNA, Columbia,
Epic, J, Jive, Legacy, RCA and Verity. We know how
music is supposed to sound. And we apply that
knowledge throughout product development.
X Sony is one of the world’s leading movie companies.
Sony Pictures Entertainment includes Columbia Pictures,
Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Classics and TriStar Pictures.
Our Culver City lot includes 22 sound stages, ample post
production facilities and disc mastering. Movie projects
from other studios line up to take advantage of the
acoustics of our meticulously designed mixing stages, while
our scoring stage is a Hollywood favorite. The knowledge
we gain in movie production is reflected in our audio/
video components. And we even reproduce the acoustics
of our mixing and scoring stages with incredible precision,
thanks to our latest Digital Cinema Sound ® modes.
Sony continues to advance the cause of audio with
extraordinary research and development, original
technology and patient hours in the listening room.
They all come together in the sound of Sony.

Digital Cinema Sound™
The movies that we all see in movie theaters are made
up of a soundtrack and moving images from film. In
order for movies to recreate a realistic environment
that extends beyond the four corners of the screen, the
soundtrack is critical to the experience. To do this, the
various sounds and their respective orientation, are
practically as important as the images themselves.
The realism of a freezing blizzard or a tidal wave from the
comfort of your theater seat. The sound of a helicopter
coming from directly above you, even though it cannot be
seen on the screen. Expressing these situations requires the
creation of three-dimensional acoustic environments so
that the movie can expand beyond limitations of the scene
presented on a flat screen. This is an important technical
activity performed by the people who make movies.
When the movie is played back as it is in the home
environment, it is difficult to achieve the kind of sound
reproduction normally experienced in a theater. This is
because the acoustic conditions of a home listening room
and a movie theater are fundamentally different.
Sony’s original Digital Cinema Sound technology uses
DSP technology to recreate the acoustic environment
of a movie theater in the home, and this enables the
reproduction of movie soundtracks closer to what the
director had intended. DCS was developed jointly by
Sony and Sony Pictures Entertainment California). In
actual use, this technology enables the reproduction of
movie soundtracks as they are recorded in Hollywood.
Digital Cinema Sound™
However, in the home environment, these three
important elements are missing. For this reason, Sony
has employed advanced digital signal processing (DSP)
technology to create Digital Cinema Sound, which
accurately recreates acoustic characteristics which closely
resemble those of a movie theater in the home.
Cinema Studio EX mode has been created
from these three elements.
1. Virtual Multi Dimension, which recreates the
environment of multiple surround speakers
2. Screen Depth Matching, which recreates the sensation
of sound coming through a movie screen.
3. Cinema Studio Reverberation, which recreates the
unique acoustic environment of a movie theater.
With DCS you can transform any movie soundtrack
into what the director and the Sound experts at Sony
Pictures intended right in your living room.
With the development of the lossless audio available with
Blu-ray Disc™ technology the potential accuracy of the sound
field grew exponentially. That enabled Sony engineers to go
back to the studio and create a lossless digital equivalent.
This HD-D.C.S. sound field when married to the lossless audio
codecs, provides a higher level of auditory imagery. Now, not
only can you hear the cannon ball whizzing past your ear but
you can follow the movement of that sound with your ears.
In 2010 this feature was only found in select ES Receivers but
it has been included in the Core line up for 2011 in the
STR-DH520, STR-DH720, STR-820, and STR-DN1020 as well.
Sony Pictures Entertainment operates several large-scale
mixing studios that are all equipped with the latest editing
equipment, and the facilities and environment are so
favorable that other movie companies often rent these
facilities to create the soundtracks for their movies. The
director and audio technicians listen to the various sounds.
It is the sound characteristics of these studios that need
to be caught and reproduced in a movie theater using
3 elements: multiple surround sound speakers, speaker
placement behind the screen and acoustic reverberation.
All of these can easily be built in a Movie Theater.
24

HDMI™ Repeater Technology
BRAVIA® Home Theater Control
HDMI™ technology should be so simple. Just plug your HDMI™
enabled source into an HDMI™ equipped TV or sound system
and away you go with the best audio and video possible. But
what should be simple isn‘t always. When you sell an Audio
system or A/V Receiver you should make it as easy as possible
for your customers to understand how it works and how to get
the best results. To do that you should always recommend an
audio solution that has an HDMI repeater built into it.
One cool feature that Sony has built into their TVs and their
Home Audio products is BRAVIA® Sync which when using an
HDMI™ cable allows the TV to control various features of the
sound system including power and volume. One of the limiting
factors to this is that to set up other things in the sound system
like sound fields and other settings you needed to get into the
menu of the sound system. This was not a problem for systems
that had graphic user interfaces, but for systems that didn’t it
could be difficult to setup properly.
Here is why:
Without a HDMI™ repeater a customer might plug their
electronics into their TV and have to run audio into their sound
system via optical cable.
Without Repeater
Sound System
Not only does this make for a
messy setup but also Bluray Disc™ Audio will not be
passed to the speakers. This
way of hooking everything up
eliminates the possibility of
getting the best audio Blu-ray
Disc technology can offer.
Also note that some sound systems have HDMI switching so
you can connect devices directly to the sound system and have
the video passed to the TV but that only delivers 2 channel
audio. That’s why having an HDMI repeater is critical.
Without Repeater
With select BRAVIA® TVs that support “Widgets” (i.e. the
EX620, EX630, EX720, EX820, EX830, NX830, HX820, HX830,
or HX930 series) a useful on screen tool appears when a
compatible audio system is attached to the TV. This Home
Theater tool will allow you to control various commands for
the audio equipment including HDMI control, power on, audio
sound field, volume control and many other settings. This takes
the guess work out of setting up the audio system as it becomes
very easy to see and navigate through the settings.

Sound Systems
for Blu-ray ™
How to Marry a Sound System to a Blu-ray Disc™
There are three basic audio solutions for Blu-ray
Disc Audio :
INTEGRATED
If your customer doesn't have a compatible sound system
and wants to buy one at the same time they are buying a
Blu-ray Disc player, an integrated system like the BDV-E280,
BDV-E580, BDV-E770W, and BDV-HZ970 might be the best bet
for you to sell. They offer all of the functionality of a Blu-ray
Disc™ player with all of the audio components they need all
in the same box. You can sell this solution knowing that your
customer will be able to easily set up their system and get
the ideal Audio and Video experience with little effort. With
HDMI™ repeater inputs connecting high-definition devices has
never been easier.
FLEXIBLE
If your customer wants or is thinking about adding devices to
their system this may be the way to go. With separates you have
many choices. They can buy a HT-SS380 which has the speakers
they will need in the box or they can buy an STR-DH520,
STR-DH720, STR-DH820, or STR-DN1020 receiver. If they go the
receiver route make sure to ask them if they have appropriate
speakers to match. Buying a stand alone receiver will give your
customer more choices and connections down the road.
SIMPLE
Some customers may not have the room or the desire for a
full 5.1 Sound system. Maybe they want a simple set up an
aesthetically pleasing arrangement. With the HT-CT550W and
HT-CT150 they can have simulated 5.1 sound coming from a
simple bar and subwoofer. Just like the flexible solutions, these
have HDMI repeaters and sound great!

Flexible Audio Video Receivers
Flexible Audio Video Receiver
Why Sony AV/Receivers
SONY A/V RECEIVERS FOR 2011
Your customers can get music from digital media players.
They can hear video sound-tracks from a TV’s built-in speakers.
When they choose an A/V receiver, they have much higher
expectations. They expect superb input/output capabilities,
ultra-precise audio control and room-shaking sound. They
expect a purity of sound more true to the source. They also
expect to hear the audio from soundtracks the way the director
created it.
Consumers also expect that AV Receivers do more on the video
front. They want graphical menus, high quality video switching
with HDMI™ inputs and pass-throughs. They want a receiver
capable of being the brains of the home entertainment system
be it audio or video. With Sony A/V receivers, your customers
get all of this and more.
SUPERLATIVE SOUND
Customers expect an A/V receiver to reproduce musical peaks
and sound track car crashes alike without effort or strain.
Sony understands. That’s why we incorporate hefty power
transformers, large filter capacitors and high-current output
stages. We even considered the speaker output connections,
providing traditional screw terminals for higher conductivity
and a more secure grip. When the program material — and the
volume setting — call for it, Sony receivers readily deliver
kick-in-the-pants sound.
THE BEST FROM BLU
Unlike DVD, Blu-ray Disc™ media supports a new generation
of lossless audio. ”Lossy“ DVD-era compression systems can
use as little as 448 kbps. The new sound tracks can require up
to 50 times as much data. All Sony 2010 A/V receivers support
uncompressed multi-channel Linear PCM. And most models also
support lossless Dolby ® True HD and dts ® -HD Master Audio.1
