Bar Code Basics
Why use automatically identification
Modern automated warehouses, conveyor belts and manufacturing
facilities increasingly require the implementation of identification systems.
One of the main requirements of the production process is the link
between the information and the material flow. Thus, objects can be
identified in real-time locations, which results in increased flexibility
in every phase of the work process. Optical identification represents
approximately 75 percent of all identification systems currently in use.
Thanks to bar codes, printed data can be easily and automatically read by
means of a reading device. Bar code applications can be found in all fields
of industry, retail, in the public sector and in everyday life. Moreover, a
series of codes have been developed which can no longer be defined as
bar codes, but as matrix codes, like the Data Matrix or MaxiCode. These
two-dimensional codes are used mainly in the logistics field.
The information encoded in a bar code can be optically read by means of a
special device. It must be taken into account that surrounding conditions
can considerably influence the reading and therefore the correct
identification of the code. For example, if the information contained in a
label is not correctly decoded, the item may be sent to the wrong location
or even be destroyed. Bar codes can be found on moving objects, delivery

notes, warehouse schedules, identifying plates, labels, etc. With respect
to directly printing characters on objects by means of laser or ink-jet,
labels have the advantage of being printed before being used. In this case,
the place where the code is printed and used can be different, and this
enables a low-cost and high-quality mass production in printing works.
Thanks to technological progress in opto-electronics, today data printed
in a certain format can be automatically read and then downloaded to a
computer by means of standardised interfaces. A bar code on a stationary
object can be read by means of any hand-held reading device.
With a fixed-position laser scanner or a CCD-scanner, codes can be read
at a remote distance on both moving and stationary objects. Automatic
identification and today‘s computer technology have given industry
improved control systems for managing transportation and production
processes, as well as warehouses. Moreover, automatic identification
systems simplify data management with regard to the issuance of
warehouse and transportation documents (delivery notes, invoices,
packing notes, etc.)

Why 1D-Codes
How Optical Symbologies Are Structured
Although a relatively recent technology, the world of bar codes is in
continuous evolution. In the period between 1970 and 1980 all standard
bar codes were developed, such as 2/5 Interleaved, Codabar, EAN/UPC,
Code 39 and Code 128. At the same time, a number of special codes
were created to meet the needs and demands of particular fields or
applications. This is the case with Code 11, IBM Delta Distance, MSICode and many others. Only the best and most widely used bar code
symbologies have survived and, in fact, since April
1993 the
following bar codes have become the world-wide and
European standard.

The use of the 5 above-mentioned 1-D codes is further
restricted. In trade, EAN has always been the standard, while
in industry, especially in materials handling, logistics and warehouse
management, Code 128 and EAN128 are increasingly used. Code 2/5
Interleaved, on the other hand, will in the long term be replaced by Code
128 as the latter allows the encoding of numerical data in an even more
compact form by means of the character set C.

Why 2D-Codes
1988 - 1995: Development of the first stacked codes, such as Code 49,
Code 16K, Codablock and PDF417.
1988 - 1995: Development of the first Matrix Codes, such as Data
Matrix and MaxiCode.
The idea behind this kind of code is the connection between different
codes related to each other. A checkdigit over the total set of codes
guarantees the reliability of the data. 2D-Codes are based on the concept
of the two-dimensional representation of information This means that
the standard bar code could be defined as a 1D-code, as information is
encoded only in the X-axis.
At the same time, a series of codes were developed which can no longer
be defined as bar codes, but as Matrix Codes. MaxiCode was specifically
designed for omni-directional sortation of transport packages in a quick
and reliable way. An error-correction algorithm guarantees the reliability of
data. A quick image-processing system reads codes by means of a linear
camera or a matrix camera whenever necessary.
Stacked codes, on the other hand, include a second information level in
the Y-axis. By condensing information in this way, i.e. stacking it, the area
necessary for a 2D-Code can be relatively small. With respect to standard
bar codes, the implementation of two-dimensional reading technology
leads to a limited increase in costs, provided that the structure of standard
bar codes remains unchanged. If this is not the case, special software
drivers must be installed on the printing and reading devices.
Data Matrix, on the other hand, is particularly useful in applications
requiring small spaces. Like MaxiCode, this code can be read omnidirectionally. Data Matrix is very compact, reliable and can encode a great
variety of characters and settings.
This is considered a major benefit in the pharmaceutical sector, as well as
in different manufacturing sectors.
Examples of bar code applications
Manufacturing: On the shop-floor of industrial plants Datalogic devices
identify objects being manufactured, capture information from the
process and transmit it to the company IT system, to make real-time
control of time and processes possible. Datalogic devices identify the
single products in the isles, production lines and warehouses, guarantee
automatic and immediate monitoring of the production process, and
supply all the necessary information to maximise precision, quality and
efficiency.
Transportation & Logistics: Datalogic products are used to control and
guide the movements of goods and people. In warehouses and transit
areas of goods, centres of gathering correspondence and airports, national
carriers and big international couriers, airports and airline companies, post
offices and providers of logistic services find Datalogic to be the ideal
partner to guarantee total traceability of each movement.
Distribution & Retail: In supermarkets and shops Datalogic‘s readers
enable consumers to pay without queuing at the cashier, enable the big
chain stores to develop truly one-to-one promotions for their customers,
and manufacturers of consumer goods to have a precise feedback on
sales and the purchasing model of consumers.
OEM: OEMs require very reliable components that fit into their
machines, minimising the integration effort and assuring the highest
level of performance. Datalogic’s capability to define, develop and deliver
specialised and customised devices in a fast and reliable way is crucial for
OEMs in increasingly competitive markets.

Bar Code Basics
Terminology - 1D-Code
Bar: The dark element in a bar code symbol.
Space: The light element between two bars in a bar code symbol.
Intercharacter gap: In a discrete code, the space between the last bar of
a character and the first bar of the following character.
Element: A bar or space in a bar code symbol.
Module: The narrowest element in a bar code. Wide bars or spaces are
expressed in multiples of modules.
X Dimension: The width of the narrowest element.
the reading direction of the bar code symbol. The quiet zone must be at
least 10 times the X dimension with anyway a minimum width of 2.5 mm.
In scanner applications involving a large depth of field, the quiet zone
must be wider: Q = 15 times the X dimension with a minimum width of
6.5 mm.
Bar Code Symbol: The bar code symbol consists of a bar code, two
quiet zones and an interpretation line. The bar code includes encoded
data, which consists of coloured bars and blank spaces. The quiet zone
precedes and follows the bar code and helps to identify the object to
decode. The interpretation line is positioned below the bar code and
translates all of the encoded information into readable characters.
Quiet zone: Also called light margin or clear area. It is the blank area
before and after the bar code. The quiet zone Q is necessary for setting
Overview of bar code types
As already mentioned, several bar code symbologies have been developed
to meet different needs. This overview should help one to find the most
suitable bar code, depending on the application, the printing method and
the recognition philosophy. The code is in fact often required to respond
to conflicting needs such as:

Code 2/5 5 Bars Industry
General: Numeric code consisting of the digits 0 to 9. The code comprises
two wide and three narrow bars. Code Ratio n:narrow bar: wide barn n =
1:2 to 1:3. The space between characters does not contain information.
Advantages: The code only consists of bars, there is no information in the
spaces. High print tolerance (± 15%). It can therefore be produced even
with the simplest printing methods.
Disadvantages: Limited information density. Example: 4.2 mm per
digit with the following minimum bar width X = 0.3 mm and code ratio
n = 1:3.
Printable with: Offset, typographical and copperplate printing,
flexography, numbering and printing, computer-controlled printing,
phototypesetting.
General: Numeric code consisting of the digits 0 to 9. The code contains
two wide bars and three narrow bars, two wide spaces and three
narrow spaces. Code Ratio n: narrow element: wide element n = 1:2 to
1:3. Where the narrow element measures less than 0.5 mm, the ratio
between the narrow and the wide element is as follows n = 1:2.25, to
max. n = 1:3. The first digit is represented by 5 bars, the second by the
spaces immediately following the bars of the first digit.
Advantages: High information density. Example: 2.7 mm per digit with
minimumbar width X=0.3 mm and Code Ratio n = 1:3. Self-test capability.
Disadvantages: All the spaces contain information and therefore the print
tolerance is low, i.e. ± 10%.
Printable with: Offset, typographical and copperplate, flexography,
computer-controlled printing and phototypesetting.
Code 39
Codabar
General: Numeric code containing 6 additional special characters in
its set. It consists of the digits 0 to 9, and the following characters -,
$, :, /, ., +. Each character is made up of 7 elements (4 bars and 3 spaces).
To display the code, 2 or 3 wide elements and 4 or 5 narrow elements
are used. The spaces between the characters do not contain information.
Code Ratio n: narrow element: wide element n=1:2.25, max. n=1:3.
Advantages: Besides 0-9, it is possible to display 6 further special
characters. The spaces between characters do not contain information.
Disadvantages: Low information density. Example: 5.5 mm per digit with
minimum bar width X=0.3 mm and Code Ratio n=1:3.
Printable with: Offset, typographical and copperplate printing,
flexography, numbering and printing, computer-controlled printing and
phototypesetting.
General: Alphanumeric code consisting of the digits 0 to 9, 26 letters,
and 7 special characters. Each character contains 9 elements, 5 bars and
4 spaces. 3 elements are wide and 6 are narrow, except for the display
of the special characters. The space between the characters does not
contain information. Code Ratio n: narrow element: wide element n=1:2
to 1:3. Where the narrow element measures less than 0.5 mm, the ratio
between the narrow and the wide element is as follows: narrow element
: wide element n=1:2.25, max. n=1:3.
Advantages: Alphanumeric representation.
Disadvantages: Low information density. Example: 4.8 mm per digit with
the following minimum bar width X=0.3 mm and Code Ratio n=1:3.Low
information density (± 10%).
Printable with: Offset, typographical and copperplate printing, flexography, computer-controlledprinting and phototypesetting.
Code 128
General: Code 128 is able to encode the complete set of ASCII characters
without using combinations of characters (see Code 39 and 93). However,
this does not mean that Code 128 can directly represent the complete set
of ASCII-characters. This is only possible by utilising 3 character subsets,
A, B and C, which are used according to the problem to be solved. The
different subsets can also be mixed. In order to encode the complete set
of ASCII characters, the start characters A or B must be used in connection
with the special characters of Code 128. Each character consists of 11
modules, divided into 3 bars and 3 spaces. Bars always comprise an even
number of modules (even parity), while spaces containan odd number of
modules. The stop character is an exception as it includes 13 modules, i.e.
11 modules and one 2-module boundary bar.
Advantages: Representation of the complete set of ASCII characters.
High information density.
Disadvantages: Low print tolerance. The
code uses four different bar or space widths.
The completeset of ASCII characters
cannot be represented with one
character set.
Printable with: Offset, typographical,
copperplate, thermaltransfer printing and
phototypesetting.

Bar Code Basics
EAN128
General: All application identifiers and their data contents can be
represented with the UCC/EAN 128 bar code. A subset of Code 128,
EAN 128, is characterised by the use of a special character, i.e. the
function character 1 (FNC 1)1), which directly follows the start character
at the beginning of the bar code symbol. The use of this combination of
characters is reserved to the International Article Numbering Organization,
EAN, and to the American Uniform Code Council, UCC.
Three parameters have to be taken into consideration when defining
the maximum length of an EAN 128 symbol: the number of encoded
characters, the physical length of the code, which depends on the
enlargement factor, the number of data characters encoded excluding
auxiliary and symbol characters.
The max. length of any EAN 128 symbol must respect following limits:
• The physical length cannot exceed 165 mm including quiet zones.
• The maximum number of encoded data, including application identifiers,
is 48, excluding auxiliary and symbol check characters. 1) If FNC1
characters are used as separator characters, they can be considered as
data characters.
Including all auxiliary and symbol check characters, the EAN 128 symbol
shouldn´t exceed 35 symbol characters. Otherwise, there is the risk that
an inadequate enlargement factor must be chosen for major company
applications.
Moreover, it has to be considered that in code set C a certain number of
data characters can be encoded using a smaller number of symbols.
Limits of fixed- and variable-length data strings: application identifiers
identify variable- or fixed-length data strings. When multiple application
identifiers are concatenated with their data contents into a symbol, a FNC
1 character must follow each variable data string, unless it is the last string
in the bar code symbol. Separator characters are not required with fixedlength data contents.
In order to transmit the length of predefined fixed-length strings after the
reading has taken place, a table of indicators has been established. Some
of the indicators listed in the table here below are already in use today
as application identifiers (i.e. »00“, »01“) and have been included in most
application identifiers (i.e. »31“,“41“).
The table shows the total length of data strings, which consist of the
application identifiers and the data contents. In this way, however, no

information is conveyed regarding the length
of the application identifiers or the (numeric or
alphanumeric) format of the data content.
• All the strings not included in this table must
be followed by an FNC 1 or a stop character.
• New data strings are not clearly separated by
means of FNC 1 characters.
The table includes provisions for the future and
is therefore firmly established. If further fixedlength data strings are standardised in the future,
their application identifiers will be selected from
this table. Thus, processing software can be
developed independently of any future additional
release of data strings. This table must always be
included in the processing software, otherwise
the division of the bar string into single elements
cannot be guaranteed.
Data content: According to the application, the data content following an
Application Identifier may consist of numeric or alphanumeric characters
and may contain up to 30 characters in length.
The length of data fields in which data contents will be encoded may be
either fixed or variable. A fixed-length data field must always contain its
set number of characters (numbers and/or letters). If necessary a data
field must be filled with leading zeros, in order to reach its assigned
data length. For variable-length data fields, a maximum length has been
defined. This maximum cannot be exceeded for any reason.
Example:
3100 Net Weight in kilos without decimals.
3102 Net Weight in kilos with two decimals.
Note: The measurement of variable measure items
can only be indicated by means of one specific
Application Identifier (30 and 3100 to 3169). Thus,
by establishing a one-to-one relationship between the
item EAN code and the measurement, the risk of confusion
among different indications of measurements is avoided,
i.e. for logistics purposes. The application identifiers 3300
to 3369, 340 and 37 identify measurements required for
logistics purposes.
RSS / GS1 DataBar
General: The RSS family, now identified as GS1 DataBar, consists of
three main symbols. RSS-14 encodes 14 digits of numerical data (GTIN
) and indicator digit values are limited to 0 to 9. RSS Limited is a linear
symbology which encodes the same RSS14 data (GTIN), with indicator
digit values limited to 1 or 0. RSS Expanded is a variable length, linear
symbology, encoded differently than RSS-14. It can hold up to 74 numeric
or 41 alphabetic characters and encode 14 digits (GTIN), or more using all
types of EAN/UCC Application Identifiers, as used for the EAN/UCC Code
128. Both RSS-14 and RSS-Expanded can be printed in two to eleven
rows of 2 segments each, reducing the overall length of the linear code.
Composite codes always have a linear (or stacked in the case of RSS) part,
with a 2D component that is positioned just above the linear part and with
a separator pattern between the two. There are three main symbols in
the CS family. CC-A, based on a variant of MicroPDF417, encodes up to
5456 digits of alphanumeric data and can be combined with any EAN/UCC
symbols, with the exception of ITF-14. CC-B, based on MicroPDF417, can
encode up to 338 digits of alphanumeric data and can be combined with
any of the EAN-UCC symbols, with the exception of ITF-14. CC-C, based
on PDF417, must only be combined with UCC/EAN-128 and can encode
up to 2361 digits of alphanumeric data.
symbologyprinted on smaller items, of a greater amount of data on
a symbol, of an omni-directional symbology. These bar codesprovide
new ways of using the EAN/UCC system for bar coding items which
previouslydid not carry a bar code, satisfying emergingtarget markets/
applications in Retail/Food industries and Healthcare.
Disadvantages: At the moment, CS symbologies can only be read by 2D
bar code readers.

YYYNQIKUEGPVGTEQO
Code 49
General: Code 49 is a version of the stacked code based on its own
code structure. Each symbol can consist of between 2 and 8 rows, each
containing 70 modules, a start character (2 modules), 4 data words (4 x 16
modules) and a stop character (4 modules). During the reading process
row numbers can be determined by representing each data word in strictly
pre-defined combinations. Maximum capacity is 49 ASCII characters or 81
numeric characters.
Advantages: Compact Code. Flexibility in adapting the information to
encode to a given area thanks to variable height and information density.
All the reading devices on the market can be used. However, the decoder
must be expanded, as Code 49 isbased on its own structure. The decoder
must read the whole code before transmitting the contents of the code
the central computer system.
Disadvantages: Rigid format. The stacked structure
must be respected during the reading process.
Printable with: Any printing method suitable for UPC or for
Code 39.
Codablock
General: CODABLOCK was developed as a stacked version of the
standard bar codes Code 39 and Code 128 able to encode the information
context when the label is not wide enough and therefore several shorter
bar codes should be printed. Each row includes a row indicator, which
shows the orientation of the reading and two check characters, which
guarantee the accuracy of the whole message. There are three varieties
to this code.
CODABLOCK A: Based on the structure of Code 39, it can encode 1 to 61
characters with up to 22 rows (totalling maximum 1,340 characters). The
check digit over the whole message is calculated on Modulo 43.
CODABLOCK F: Based on the structure of Code 128, this code can
contain 2 to 44 rows, with 4 to 62 characters per row (totalling maximum
2,725 characters).
CODABLOCK 256: This variety has the samestructure of CODABLOCK F,
but has special start and stop characters. It can consist of 2 to 44 rows,
each containing 4 to 62 characters (totalling maximum 2,725 characters).
Each row contains error correction, so that minor damage can be repaired.
Advantages: Increased reliability of data of one single CODABLOCK
label with respect to several separate labels to encode one message.
Flexibility in adapting the information to encode to a given area thanks
to variable height and information density. All the reading devices on the
market can be used, as the CODABLOCK is based on already existing bar
code symbologies. Re-assembling each line to reproduce the complete
message in the right sequence can also be achieved by means of an
overhead calculation system.
Disadvantages: The stacked structure must be respected during the
reading process.
Printable with: Any printing method suitable for Code 39 or 128.
PDF 417
General: PDF 417 is a version of the stacked code based on its own
structure. Characters areencoded in so-called »codewords«. Each
codeword consists of 17 modules each containing 4 bars and 4 spaces.
The code can contain up to 1,108 bytes and can use between 3 and 90
rows. Each row contains two row indicators, which show the position
of the row on the symbol. At least two codewords are used as check
characters, which guarantee the reliabilityof the whole message. Error
correction can be carried out by means of further codewords (up to 512)
and takes place indifferent steps.
Advantages: Very compact code. Flexibility in adapting information to a
given area thanks to variable height, width and information density. All
the reading devices on the market can be used. Only the decoder must
be expanded, as PDF 417 is based on its own very complex structure.
However, the decoder must read the whole code before transmitting the
contents of the code to the central computer system.
Disadvantages: The stacked structure must be respected during the
reading.
Printable with: Printing methods using the necessary driver software.
General: Data Matrix is a version of the Matrix Code and has two main
subsets, ECC 000-140 and ECC 200. ECC 200 is the latest revision
recommended for use. Data Matrix has the variable square size of
a matrix. Symbols canrange from a size of 10 x 10 to 144 x 144, thus
representing either 8 x 18 or 16 x 48 symbol elements in a squared area.
Data Matrix can encode 2,334 ASCII characters (each consisting of 7 bits),
1,558 expanded ASCII characters (each consisting of 8 bits), or 3,116
digits in their largest size. A horizontal and a perpendicular border form a
corner, which indicates the orientation of the reading. The opposite sides
of the square present alternating light and dark square elements, used
to indicate both position and size of the symbol. The information density
amounts to 13 characters to 100 mm².
Advantages: Very compact code. It is very reliable, as it includes a
very powerful error-correction algorithm, Reed Solomon. Contents can
be reconstructed by means of a minimum amount of error-correction
characters even if up to 25 percent of the whole code is damaged.
Disadvantages: Only readable with image-processing devices.
Printable with: All methods equipped with the necessary printer drivers.
Maxi Code
General: Maxi Code is a version of the Matrix Code. It has a fixed size
of 25.4 mm by 25.4 mm (1 inch by 1 inch) and can represent 144 symbol
characters in an area of 646 mm², maximum 93 ASCII characters or 138
digits. A finder pattern, or bull‘s eye, consisting of 3 concentric rings, is in
the centre of the 2D Code and indicates the presence of a Maxi Code label.
Around it 866 hexagons arrangedin 33 rows carry the information. Each row
consists of a maximum of 30 hexagonal elements. 6 orientation hexagons
each with 3 hexagonal elements are arranged around the finder pattern at a
distance of 60 degrees to indicate location during omni-directional reading.
Information density amounts to 13 characters to 100 mm².
Advantages: Very compact code. It is very reliable, as it includes a very
powerful error-correction algorithm. Contents can be reconstructed even
if up to 25 percent of the whole code is damaged. Omni-directionally
readable also at high speeds.
Disadvantages: Rigid parameters. Only readable with image-processing
devices.
Printable with: All printing methods equipped with the necessary printer
drivers.AIM International Symbology Specification - Maxi Code.

One of the best-selling POS scanners – Datalogic’s most successful scanner series
Unequalled top performance for all applications
s
Available for 1D and 2D bar codes
Optional wireless function: up to 30 m operating
ng range
Large reading distance for convenient scans
2D version: omni-directional –
scans bar codes from any position
• All interfaces in one device:
USB, RS232 and keyboard wedge
Datalogic has developed the Gryphon scanner series in order
to offer high scanning performance combined with ergonomic design and unrivalled durability. These outstanding chae
racteristics and various application possibilities always make
the Gryphon series scanners the right solution for both retail
ail
and industry. The Gryphon scanners not only easily read all stanndard bar codes, but also low resolution or damaged bar codes.
s
These high-performance scanners by Datalogic come in four different
versions in order to be ready for almost any possible application in
retail, warehouses, and logistics. Of course, the devices are also available for both 1D and 2D bar codes. You can order the Gryphon either
as wired or wireless version with up to 30 metres operating range.
ners at the same time without interference, even though the same
frequency is used. The 433 MHz frequency is known to be stable and
is licence-free. If the scanner leaves the operating radius, the scanner gives an acoustic warning signal instead of the Green Spot read
confirm and stops submitting data.
Its excellent optics allows scanning of all standard bar codes at a
maximum distance of 43 cm (long-range version) with an enormous
depth of field. Unlike conventional scanners with simple linear CCD
components, this 2D scanner scans with a high-resolution CMOS
camera. Its resolution of 640 x 480 pixels not only helps users scan
bar codes, but is also good for special camera applications like signature or ID card scans. With such high resolution and special decoder
software, even badly printed, dirty or torn bar codes are scanned without delay.
For extended operating time, a powerful rechargeable battery is integrated into the grip of the portable Gryphon M version. It is not
necessary to remove this battery from the device – simply put it onto
the base station to recharge it automatically. An overview of additional batteries and chargers or other accessories for all Datalogic
scanners can be found on page 31.
With omni-directional scanning, the ergonomics and speed are
further increased with the 2D version when compared to normal
hand-held scanners. All bar codes are read from a great distance at
any angle – complicated scanner alignments can be omitted. A unique five-spot laser targeting system allows immediate intuitive targeting of the bar codes, even with multiple codes on a single label.
The Datalogic patented Green Spot makes instant read acknowledgment possible: instead of an acoustic signal, users can choose to be
alerted by a clearly visible green spot on the bar code itself. Naturally,
this technology is especially useful in particularly dark or noisy environments.
The high quality of design and workmanship of the Gryphon series
does not only show excellent physical characteristics (e.g. operating
temperature: 0-50° C) – an unconditional five-year Datalogic warranty
is provided for all wired Gryphon scanners. The sturdy housing offers
an effective rubber guard on all sides that help the device withstand
even repeated drops onto concrete.
No matter if used in workshops, management, POS, production or
small warehouses: if you offer customers Gryphon scanners they will
get completely professional devices with unequalled scanning performance, operational comfort and workmanship.
Very useful is the multi-interface that is integrated in all Gryphon versions: serial, USB, keyboard wedge and light pen interfaces are all integrated into a single scanner. All you need to do is order the correct
cable for your system.

Another important feature of the Touch series is the patented Puzzle
Solver technology by Datalogic. In this process, decoding is not simply
completed after a scan, but rather fragments from several scans are
connected together to form a complete whole before being transferred
to the host. This feature significantly increases the number of positive
reads and speeds up data collection, especially in retail and logistics.
The Datalogic Touch 65/90 CCD contact readers are perfect for costeffective solutions that require best scanning capabilities and high
reliability. The Touch 65/90 is a complete all-in-one solution for retail,
management, warehouses or workshops. Tailored to the explicit
requirements of your customers, they are available in two versions
(light and Pro):
The 65/90 light scanner accurately reads all established bar codes with
a high-resolution CCD scan engine. Its extremely high scan rate of
256 scans per second allows for outstanding scans, even with badly
printed or damaged bar codes. Although equipped with a sturdy,
scratch-resistant ABS plastic housing, the Touch series scanners
weigh under 200 g and provide the usual high ergonomic quality of
Datalogic devices. The user is notified of a successful scan with either
an LED indicator or an adjustable beeper. Integrated data formatting
and editing functions allow the user to adapt all collected data to any
format required by the used application.
The Touch-Light series has two interface configurations: one
version with dual-interface KBW and RS232, and one version with
Another variant of the touch series is the CCD scanner Touch-Pro.
These devices offer the same high performance of the Light series, but
feature a multiple interface. This means your customers not only have
a keyboard interface and RS232 available, but at the same time a USB.
Merely by changing the connection cable you can attain previously
unknown flexibility with your scanner. The Pro series is also equipped

The Datalogic Heron is an extremely powerful hand-held bar code
scanner at a favourable price. An innovative design makes it an ideal
choice for all commercial applications in retail and logistics. Naturally,
easy operation and high ergonomics are needed as much in retail
as in other commercial or office applications. Both Heron versions
have shown excellent characteristics in tests and withstand constant
operational stress. The Heron models are based on the concept of
an instinctive read distance of 0-20 cm from the bar code, which
offers best results. The patented »Green-Spot« technology offers
easy scans for both versions: instead of an acoustic signal, users
can choose to be alerted by a clearly visible Green spot on the bar
code itself.
The supplied scanner stand allows professional hand-held and freehand operation of the Heron. Once inserted into the stand, the freehand mode is activated. Even in this mode the »Green-Spot« indication simplifies and speeds up scanning: it shows users exactly how
to align the bar code below the device. Consequently, no matter if

ope.
With the Magellan, Datalogic has been the market
rket
leader in this sector for many years. Of course this
exceptionally large market share is not a coincidence:
ncidence:
the new 8300/8400 series continues Datalogic’s
gic’s concept for
success with uncompromising reliable POS scanners for highly
professional applications at an excellent price-performance-ratio.
These scanners offer state-of-the-art technology that guarantees
high throughput and improves employee performance and
service life. Queues and failures are reduced to a minimum.
The main advantages of the Datalogic Magellan family provide a significant performance boost and higher productivity. System integrators
have more satisfied customers and the certainty of providing extra
value with one of the best available solutions. Magellan scanners
are extremely reliable and of high quality, which ensures a smooth
running system. Additionally, these scanners offer unique features
that give them various advantages over comparable products.
According to the manufacturer, the scan performance, throughput
and scan rates are unrivalled on the global market. Efficiency of POS
stations can be increased significantly, especially in low-margin retail
sectors where every single factor can effect loss and profit.
The Magellan series offers various models (8300/8400, 8500 and
8600) that are optimised for different customer requirements. Devices
of the 8300 and 8400 series provide the same scan performance.
However, the Magellan 8400 also includes integrated scales and an
optional customer display, and is used for certified applications at
service counters or weighing mail order goods, among other applications. On request, integrated products of specific scales manufacturers (e.g. Bizerba, Mettenler-Toledo, etc.) are available as well.
Both models offer genuine five-sided bi-optic and omnidirectional
scanning. This means the scanner detects the bar code regardless
of the alignment with the object, simultaneously in two directions.
The bar codes are scanned from 5 of 6 sides of the scanned object
(all sides except the top). This saves users from having to search for
bar codes or aligning the scan window. Simply passing the code
along the scanner is sufficient. At the same time, the scanning speed
has increased enormously and queues are
prevented effectively.
A high scan rate of
effect
3,900 scanlines per second in combination
with sophisticated
decoding electronics
sophistica
ensure that the bar codes are detected
under any conditions
(including torn,
c
damaged,
damaged heavily stained, uneven or
badly printed codes).
In addition to improved
scan rates, the Magellan
8400 also offers highly
reliable weighing: the
patented All-Weighs scale
pan reduces weighingp
28
related losses tremendously. Many objects in food retail businesses
are not suitable for small scale pans and can yield incorrect values.
Eventually, the weighing loss exceeds the profit margin of many of
these products.
Furthermore, the new Magellan series comes with improved power
saving capabilities that reduce power consumption by up to 77% –
a feature that lowers expenditure and is environmentally-friendly. A
flexible interface solution that covers all established interfaces and
offers extensive evaluation and analysis functions completes the
scan features of the device. Compared to the Magellan 8300, the
Magellan 8400 offers a higher scan rate and an extended range of
functions: its analysis features help to identify poor recurrent bar
codes and performance benchmarking, as well as evaluation of user
habits (e.g. a user focuses on one scan window only and tries to align
the bar code unnecessarily).
Optionally, the Magellan 8300 as well as the Magellan 8400 are
available with EAS deactivation functions. Security labels by Checkpoint or Sensormatik are then deactivated automatically with a
deactivator from the EAS manufacturer and do not trigger the alarm.

scanner for many retail sectors
• Extremely fast scanning and
decoding of any bar code
• Detects bar codes on all
six sides
• Optional aerial for
EAS deactivation
• Programmable multi-interface
The Magellan 8500 offers the best scan
n performance of
all Magellan scanners: Genuine six-sided scanning detects
bar codes on any side of the object, even on top. Accordingly, users
are not required to examine any goods at all, as the bar code is always
recognised regardless of its position on the packaging. This improves
POS processes further, as the user simply passes the goods along
the scan window to the customer, who hardly can keep up with the
speed.
The Magellan 8500 offers options for deactivation of secured
goods in combination with the required hardware for Checkpoint security labels. Includes a practical multi-interface: a single
model, yet a variety of interfaces in one – it is configured for
the desired interface according to the connected cable
– USB, keyboard wedge or RS232. A large number
of emulators for various POS and industry protocols
are available. React to systems changes simply by
exchanging the cables– it is not necessary to change
the scanner anymore. Extensive accessories and a
complete range of spare parts offer high flexibility during
installation, as well as a safe investment.
Furthermore, the Magellan 8500 is equipped with the patented
Omega-Tek scan technology that offers sophisticated training and
analysis tools for employee training. Within any existing legal restrictions, the user optimises his own scanning habits with the help of
the scanners evaluation, or compares the results with colleagues to
reach the same throughput and make sure that optimised and fast
scanning is guaranteed even at peak hours.
Excellent characteristics and a compact design make the Magellan
8500 the right choice for all POS environments with high throughput.
Its omnidirectional field of view detects the bar code from any angle
and combines a high success rate with excellent reliability and easy
use.

The Magellan family offers your customer in-counter scanners of the
highest quality – used by all large retailers successfully for years.
The Magellan is the perfect solution whenever high performance and
professional hardware at a heavily frequented POS is required. The
compact devices of the Magellan 2xxx family are fully compatible
with their predecessor HS1250 and can consequently be used for
system upgrades as well as complete new POS systems. The Magellan product family demonstrates excellent characteristics in terms of
scan rates, readability of badly printed labels and improved ergonomics when compared to other models. We offer both horizontal and
vertical in-counter scanners by Datalogic.
The compact Magellan 2300HS is a horizontal scanner that is based
on the same professional technology that is used in the 8000 series.
It is therefore especially suited for medium to high throughput applications in food retail, chemists or department stores. A combinatino of 1,800 scan lines per second and depth of field of over 15 cm
guarantee rapid article scanning, while unique software features and
functions provide further operational capability.

• Powerful built-in scanner with
imaging technology
• Reads all GS1 and 2D bar codes
(2D version) at top speed
• Longevity thanks to robust stainless
steel casing
• Simple software updates via USB or microSD
The in-counter scanner Magellan 3200VSi completely redefines bar
code scanning at the checkout: as a professional imager for 2D and
GS1 codes, it delivers tremendous results when scanning difficult-toread bar codes, e.g. ripped or poorly printed ones – at a speed that
up until now only laser scanners could boast. The intelligent lighting
technology Illumix provides maximum productivity and ergonomic
operation, reading even from mobile phones, PDAs and computer
monitors.
Due to the powerful imager technology, most of the scanner functions are software based, making management and configuration
simple using diverse tools. Another advantage: the extremely fast
imager has no moving components, laser modules or rotating motors,
thereby guaranteeing particular long-lasting and smooth operation
over many years. Both a micro-SD slot as well as various interfaces
(IBM, USB, RS232, powered USB) are onboard as standard. Being
compatible with its predecessors, it adopts the same cable, opening
in the table and even the very expensive sapphire glass, ensuring an
extremely low TCO.

The vertical Magellan 2200VS reads all commercial bar codes just
like its horizontal version. Its large, 20-line, omni-directional scan
pattern also reads bar codes at 100 scans per second. Install it on
the supplied platform at the cash desk and simply connect it over
the interface of your choice. Cash desk personnel then pass articles
along the large impact-resistant view window - of course with generous clearance space due to the 23 cm depth
of field. The integrated beeper then confirms
all successfully scanned bar codes and consequently speeds up the checkout throughput.

The Magellan 3300HSi is specially designed for the demanding retail
environment and meets all the expectations of a powerful built-in
scanner with the greatest of ease. As the first Magellan in-counter
scanner, it comes equipped with the newest imaging technology,
revolutionising the scanning process in high-traffic POS areas.
Omnidirectional scanning in minimal space, with the speed of a laser
scanner and the performance of an imager are its most powerful
arguments. It comes standard with the ability to read all 1D and
GS1 codes; via upgrades, it can also read 2D codes. Or select the
2D model from the beginning. Thanks to imaging technology, it
does not require the moving components of a laser scanner, which
helps reduce damage and breakdowns to a minimum. Software
customisation is a breeze thanks to the USB interface and integrated
microSD card reader, while users simply connect an additional handheld scanner via RS232. The compact stainless steel construction is
extremely robust, whereby the Magellan ensures flexible installation
and performs its professional duties for many years to come. Helpful
features include the green LED, which signals a successful scan, as
well as the automatic standby mode for longer periods of inactivity.

The Datalogic Memor™ pocket mobile computer
now offers shirt pocket convenience with Windows
Mobile 6.1, an imaging bar code scanner, and
Edge connectivity.

Datalogic Memor
• Mobile data collection – the miniature form
• Fast XScale PXA 310 processor
with 624MHz and 128MB RAM
• Laser scanner / optional 2D Imager for
track and trace applications
• Windows Mobile 6.1 / Windows CE 5.0
• GSM on Edge basis for communication
• Twenty rubber keys and multifunctional joystick
• Robust IP54 industry standard compliant design
Even higher and better performance awaits you with the new
version of the successful Memor. Small, light, ergonomic, robust
and versatile, the key features of the mini mobile terminal from
Datalogic have been once again improved. Developed especially
for applications in retail and in the field, the handheld terminal
now has a faster processor, more memory, optional Windows
Mobile 6.1 and a 2D imager, as well as mobile radio communication. Further innovations are found in the battery, keyboard
and the audio options.
Of course, the relaunch of the proven mobile terminal features
excellent ergonomics and a lightweight that prevent user fatigue,
while the long-lasting, more powerful lithium-polymer batteries last
for an entire shift. The Windows CE 5.0 or Mobile 6.1 operating
systems allow installation of various applications, while operation
of the device via a touchpad and touch screen simplifies handling
enormously. Wireless options (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Edge) make the
Datalogic Memor the ideal companion in retail and logistics. The
integrated telephone functions (GSM/GPRS/EDGE) simplify communication or are useable for your own applications.
The tiny size of 15 x 5.5 cm and approx. 230 grammes make the
Datalogic Memor only slightly larger and heavier than a mobile phone.
Despite its size, this minicomputer contains the full functionality that
is needed for mobile data collection and processing: the efficient
integrated laser scanner reads all standard bar codes at up to 110
scans per second even at a distance of up to 90 cm. An area imager
is now available to you for 2D applications with higher resolution and
image capture.
Extremely robust with almost unmatched ergonomics
In addition to extraordinary technical performance and various
options, the Memor is also designed for demanding work where
its sturdiness is required. In addition, the device is water and dustresistant according to IP54. The large temperature range allows for
use in applications inside as well as outside. Compact dimensions in
combination with its light weight supply the terminal with excellent
ergonomics, superb handling and user-friendly balance.
More memory, a faster processor and a perfect connection
The fast XScale PXA 310 processor with 624MHz ensures better
performance, while 128MB RAM and 256 MB Flash Memory provide
additional security for storing of user and program data. The useraccessible MicroSD slot makes expansion with standard SDHC
compatible cards easy and inexpensive.
Every Memor comes in a ready-to-use kit with a lithium-polymer
battery and belt clip. Fully charged, the battery provides up to
seven hours of operation. If no charged battery is available simply
use commercially available AAA alkaline cells. An AC adaptor with
a power supply cord and a USB cable are supplied with every
standard version. You can optionally choose a matching base station
for easy data transmission and recharging of additional batteries - a
multi cradle or vehicle cradle with RS232 are optionally available. In
addition, you have diverse options such as an adaptor for cigarette
lighters, an alkaline battery adaptor and a soft case. This and further
information on Memor accessories can be found on page 38.
Connection to all existing systems can be achieved in three different
ways: the basic version operates as offline mini computer with
memory. Data transmission between host and device is performed
over the integrated standard interfaces (RS232 and USB). For professional online integration into ERP systems or databases, the Wi-Fi
version of the Memor with internal IEEE 802.11b/g adaptor, Ciscocertified CCX v4 radio and antenna are recommended. The result is
a smooth real-time connection into any company network, even in
large areas or outdoors. In this way, you achieve real-time connection
in every company network without difficulty, even over large areas
or outside. A version with Bluetooth interface is also available, as is
GSM with Edge basis, which enormously expands your customers’
range of functions through quad-band mobile telecommunication.

Datalogic Skorpio Gun
• Portable data collection with pistol grip high ergonomics for fatigue-free work
• Optional with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and simplified numeric keyboard
• Highly efficient laser scanner integrated
• Colour display with touch screen (240x320 pixels)
• Windows CE 5.0 - new: optionally with Windows Mobile 6.1
• Patented »Green-Spot« indication –
bar code scanning made easy
• Water and dust resistant – IP64 compliant
The Datalogic Skorpio-Gun offers leading reliability and
robustness for industrial applications. It was designed for
operation under harsh conditions and withstands even multiple
drops and excessive stress. Excellent ergonomics and a low
weight protect users from fatigue while the high-capacity lithiumion batteries last the entire shift. The powerful laser scanner with
integrated »Green Spot« display read confirms directly on the
bar code, simplifying operation significantly. Optional long-range
scanning allows scans from a distance of the length of an arm up
to several metres.
The system architecture of the Skorpio-Gun combines a fast Intel
X-Scale CPU (312MHz, 128MB RAM) with the professional »slim«
version of the Windows CE 5.0 or optionally the WM 6.1 operating
systems. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g) for wireless communication permit high transfer rates and seamless communication with
any existing customer system. Meanwhile, the modern WPA and
WPA2 security protocols protect the data from unauthorised access.
The Skorpio-Gun version is available in four different variants (see
illustration): the standard laser scanner gives the advantage of the
patented »Green Spot« feature that places read confirms clearly
visible onto the bar code itself. In this way, successful reads are
confirmed easily even in noisy environments. The standard version
reads at a distance of 5 to 90 cm for 40mil code. The long range laser
scanner reads 40 mil codes at a distance of 20 to 200 cm. These
scanners also read reflective labels at long distance. The long range
option makes the Skorpio the best scanner of its class and gives you
an enormous competitive advantage.
