Evaluating color MFPs
Why MFP?
Traditionally businesses have relied upon a variety of hardcopy
tools, including printers, fax machines, and copiers. While the
functionality offered by these tools remains important, advances in
digital technology have changed the hardcopy needs of users. By
adequately addressing these needs, a business can increase user
productivity and operating efficiency—compelling reasons for
choosing the right hardcopy solution. An HP MFP can help you
reduce costs, increase productivity, and improve workflow:
•
Manage fewer consumables and reduce your total cost of
ownership, storage requirements, and service interruptions.
HP MFPs allow you to not only save the cost of four
single-function products, but get an investment that can easily
adapt and evolve when business needs change.
•
Further streamline communications by capturing paper-based
documents electronically and sending them to e-mail or network folders.
Why color?
Using color in business collateral leaves a more lasting impression—industry statistics prove that color increases
sales. And brilliant, professional color is more affordable and convenient than ever before with HP’s innovative
color solutions. Provide customized, up-to-date marketing information and internal communications—eliminating
the costs associated with outsourced printing, without sacrificing quality.

Evaluating color MFPs
Evaluation categories
Based on extensive market research and customer feedback, HP has identified user needs in eight key
categories. These categories should be closely examined as businesses consider the purchase of an MFP. In this
section, we will examine each of these and how the HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series meets the criteria in
each category.
1—Usability and management
2—Document handling
3—Performance
4—Output quality
5—Total cost of ownership
6—Security
7—Reliability
8—Environmental responsibility
During your evaluation, we invite you to compare the HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series to other competing
products to see why it is the best choice for your workplace!
Evaluation guidelines
As you design tests and conduct your evaluation, remember the following guidelines:
•
Consider the typical end user’s printing, copying, faxing, scanning, and digital sending needs.
•
Simulate the end user’s environment.
•
When testing more than one product, try to make a fair comparison between products by setting up in
the same environment and testing similar settings and configurations.
Analyze each of the elements of the printing process, but remember that the elements work together as part
of the whole printing solution. (For instance, performance claims mean very little if documents print incorrectly
or with poor quality.)

Send-to and fax wizards
Configuring the MFP’s send to network or desktop folder is quick and simple with included send-to wizards
available through the installation CD. Either use the Embedded Web Server to do the setup and configuration,
or select the Enable Scan Setup Wizard checkbox in EWS, then run the Wizard from the installation CD. The fax
set-up wizard includes screen prompts at the control panel to walk you through the process of setting up the fax
capability.
Supports the HP Universal Print Driver
Use a single driver for instant access to HP devices—at home, in the office, or on the
road. The HP Universal Print Driver is not a one-size-fits-all print solution. The
sophisticated yet simple print driver communicates directly with each HP device,
gathers configuration information, then customizes the user interface to show the
device’s unique, available features.
While some multi-device print drivers only enable the most basic functions on the
devices they support, the HP Universal Print Driver enables all available features, no
matter how advanced—from two-sided printing to watermark printing—on all of the devices it supports. While
the printer capabilities may vary for each device, the HP Universal Print Driver provides the same look and feel
across all devices. Users enjoy a familiar experience, making it easier for them to move between devices.
With an HP Jetdirect wireless Ethernet print server and the HP Universal Print Driver’s dynamic mode, you can
easily find MFPs on a network, which is particularly valuable when you are on the road or want to print to a
new device.
Because it’s just as important for print drivers to communicate with people as with MFPs, the HP Universal Print
Driver is available in twenty-six different languages. This flexible driver also supports multiple MFP languages,
including PCL 5, PCL 6, and HP postscript emulation and is compatible with a range of Windows environments,
including Windows Vista.

Evaluating ease of use
Setting up the MFP
Have a representative end user unbox and set up the MFP, using the product documentation as a guide.
Consider the following:
•
Does the device come with supplies preinstalled for easy setup?
•
Is the user documentation helpful? Is it useful to have all documentation packaged together?
•
How does the overall MFP design contribute to ease of use?
Testing device software
1. Install the drivers and other device software and then print some test pages. Document any driver or
software changes performed during testing.
2. Note which platforms and MFP languages the drivers support.
3. Install and test all supported MFP languages as time permits.
4. Evaluate the device software after installation:
•
Is the driver easy to use?
•
What special features or utilities does the driver include?
•
What special software or tools are available?
Interacting with the control panel
Interact with the control panel. When comparing devices, consider the following:
•
How easy is it to select print, copy, scan, or fax job options?
•
How easy is it to determine the device, job, and print cartridge status?
•
What help options are available? Can you get information about how to use the MFP?
Testing interactions with the MFP
•
In general, is the MFP easy to use?
•
Is it helpful to have the supplies, such as the print cartridges, shipped preinstalled in the MFP?
•
How well is the user able to replace and interact with supplies and accessories?
•
Can you configure automatic supplies usage reports and alerts?
•
How easy is it to obtain new supplies?
Testing network interactions
When evaluating network interactions, it is important to test the network solution for both the network
administrator and the end user.
For the network administrator
•
Determine if your network operating systems are supported.
•
Install and configure the product and administrative software and simulate connecting end users. (Keep
track of the resources and time required, and the ease of setup.)
•
Examine the following:
•
Ease of network installation
•
Network security
•
Product diagnostics and troubleshooting
•
Product alerts and status
•
Product grouping, filtering, or mapping
Note
10
Try to assess the time efficiency and convenience of the network management utilities.
Usability and management
For the end user
Make sure that the user can easily determine:
•
What devices are available?
•
Where are they relative to my desk?
•
What are their features?
•
What is the MFP’s status?
•
Is my job done yet?
•
Is the MFP out of paper? Is there a paper jam? Is there enough toner to finish my job?
The user does NOT want to know:
•
Status of all the devices on the network.
•
Diagnostic information for all devices on the network.

Document handling
Enjoy a rich feature set in
a device designed to sit on
your desktop.
The HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series is compact and easily sits on a desktop, yet has all the features of a
high-performance color MFP. Print, fax,1 scan, make copies, or send to folder or e-mail—use one device to
perform multiple functions for greater efficiency. Innovation incorporated into the reliable all-in-one print
cartridge helps enable the MFP’s desktop design.
Flexible paper handling
The less you have to interact with your MFP, the better. That’s why HP offers flexible paper input, automatic
two-sided printing and copying, and thoughtful features like a convenience stapler.1
•
Accommodate your work team’s varying needs and restock paper less frequently with expandable
paper-handling capabilities. The HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series comes with a 100-sheet
multipurpose input tray for specialty papers and an adjustable 250-sheet input tray for standard paper. An
optional 500-sheet input tray means you can expand this device’s maximum input to 850 sheets.
•
Print a wide variety of high-quality documents with the look and feel you need to make the right impression.
Get media support for sizes from 3.9 by 5.8 inches (98.4 by 148 mm) 6 to 8.5 by 14 inches (216 by
356 mm) and weights from 60 g/m2 to 220 g/m2 (16 to 58 lb bond). All trays are adjustable to provide
exceptional flexibility and minimize user interaction.
•
The MFP supports a variety of media types, including paper (plain, preprinted, letterhead, prepunched,
bond, recycled, color, light, intermediate, heavy, extra heavy, rough, glossy, heavy glossy, tough),
transparencies, labels, envelopes, and card stock.
•
The optional 500-sheet input tray 3 supports a range of paper types from everyday to specialty, including
glossy and heavy paper, and standard and custom paper sizes from 5.8 by 8.3 inches (148 by 210 mm)
to 8.5 by 14 inches (216 by 356 mm). Tray 3 also automatically detects common paper sizes.
•
The MFP allows you to configure the input trays by paper type, simplifying user interaction. Assign a paper
type and size to an input tray, and when you select that type in the print driver, the printer finds and uses
the requested paper. This feature can prevent accidentally printing on special, more expensive media. To
simplify assigning paper types by tray further, use the printing shortcuts in the print driver to speed up
printing by saving your settings just as you want them.
•
Load documents and walk away—the 50-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) allows for unattended
copying, scanning, and faxing.
•
Save time and cut paper consumption with standard automatic two-sided printing and copying.
Document finishing
The HP Color LaserJet CM3530fs MFP includes a convenience stapler, allowing you to perform finishing tasks
more easily.1
12
Document handling
Effortless copying
The MFP may be used as a standalone, walk-up color copier—you do not need to be connected to the network
or a computer to make copies. Enjoy fast copy speeds of up to 31 cpm, letter (30 cpm, A4). Utilize the 50-sheet
automatic document feeder (ADF) for hands-free copying, or use the flatbed platen glass for irregular-size single
sheets, bound documents, and objects such as signs and placards up to legal size/A4.
You can adjust all copy settings at the control panel, including image adjustments (darkness, background
cleanup, sharpness), collation, reduce or enlarge from 25 to 400 percent, or even produce 2-up and 4-up
copies to conserve resources. Use the job build feature to combine several sets of original documents into one
copy job, or to copy an original document that has more pages than the document feeder can accommodate at
one time. With the stored job feature, you can create a stored copy job at the control panel that can be printed
at a later time. Use the booklet format feature to copy two or more pages onto one sheet of paper so you can
fold the sheets in the center to form a booklet.
Reliable scanning
Utilize the 50-sheet ADF for easy color scanning of documents up to legal size—just drop off your job for fast,
automatic scanning. And for bound or irregular documents, use the convenient flatbed scanner.
Archive and share your important business documents and images at the touch of a button. Preconfigure the
device to conveniently scan to a connected and supported destination such as an e-mail address using the
control panel, a network folder using the Embedded Web Server, or a workflow destination using optional
HP Digital Sending Software. 7
Efficient digital sending
Easily scan and send documents and images from the MFP directly to e-mail, network folders, printers, and fax
services from the device control panel. Expanded send-to options facilitate document workflows, enabling you to
incorporate documents that were originally hard copy into digital processes.
The MFP features send to e-mail and send to network folder out of the box, but with the optional HP Digital
Sending Software (HP DSS), you can realize your MFP’s full potential.7 Easy to install, HP DSS is the entry-level
member of a family of server-based software products that enables paper documents to be incorporated into
electronic business processes at the touch of a button. Digitized information can be sent quickly and securely to
FTP sites, network folders, and fax services, including LAN fax, Internet fax, and Windows 2000, XP®, and
Vista fax services. This improves overall efficiency and business productivity, and reduces the costs of sharing
and storing information.
HP DSS offers peace of mind when digitally sending confidential information. You can transfer data from the
MFP to a secure, supported folder with a secure send key. Authentication verifies the sender’s identity,
encryption protects files from outside access, and a final safeguard allows you to erase the MFP’s hard drive.
HP DSS includes LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) support that enhances the embedded send to
e-mail functionality of the HP MFP that the software is running on, allowing access to company directory
information such as e-mail addresses and distribution lists. This information is constantly updated and allows
users to auto-complete e-mail addresses at the device, simplifying the send to e-mail process. HP DSS supports
enhanced auto-discovery for LDAP and SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol). Enhancing speed and accuracy,
this allows for dynamic searches of the settings for accessing information directories and sending e-mail
messages between servers. HP DSS uses a company’s existing LDAP or NTLM, Novell, or Kerberos network
authentication process to verify user identification and allow access both from the user and to the supported
send-to destinations. Authentication can also be used to control and track digital sending usage by device.
Digital sending helps you convert your paper documents to digital format so you can work with the information
more easily. The benefits to your business can be significant:
•
Improve productivity and be more competitive
•
Merge paper and electronic data so both are easier to share, edit, print, store, and retrieve
•
Streamline business processes to reduce costs

Performance
Get all the features of a
high-performance MFP in a
compact, desktop design.
The HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series delivers the high performance of a color laser MFP while saving
space, allowing you to position the device closer to work teams. It’s also fast, with print speeds of up to
31 ppm, letter (30 ppm, A4) and fast Time to Completion with Instant-on Technology.
Fast printing and efficient sharing
Designed for small work teams, the HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series offers fast print speeds and efficient
workflow features, so you spend less time waiting at the device and get more work done.
You can print in professional color as quickly as when printing in black-and-white—up to 31 pages per minute,
letter (30 ppm, A4)—without compromising print quality. Most high-resolution technologies cause degradation
in the device’s performance due to increased data transmission. They often require the user to install more
memory and may increase network traffic. But HP’s innovative technologies, including HP ImageREt 3600,
achieve equivalent or better print quality without such tradeoffs.
Start fast and finish sooner. Instant-on Technology uses cutting-edge fuser technology that enables print jobs to
begin quickly from low power mode. The Time To Completion of a typical office print job can be up to
40 percent faster, letter (35 percent faster, A4) from low power mode on this device with Instant-on Technology
than on devices without it.2 This means less waiting for prints and more time spent engaged in business.
Instant-on Technology also uses up to 50 percent less energy than traditional fusing.
With a 515 MHz processor and 512 MB RAM (expandable to 1 GB), the MFP is designed to process jobs
quickly for increased uptime. To heighten performance, the MFP features Memory Enhancement technology
(MEt), which automatically compresses data, virtually doubling the printing memory and allowing more complex
printing with available memory.
You won’t have to worry about information flow bottlenecks from your network. Print more and do more with
enhanced networking. The HP Jetdirect Gigabit Ethernet embedded print server is designed to manage complex
print jobs so that big jobs print faster and print queues are shorter. In addition, it supports both IPv4 and IPv6
protocols, so that you can upgrade with confidence.

Performance
Evaluating performance
MFP performance is more than just a measure of pages per minute. Rather, performance is the speed at
which a device can turn electronic files into printed pages. In addition to engine speed, several factors affect
the time it takes to print a job, including the use of specialty paper, computer download time, and device
processing time. The time it takes for your computer to download a job to the MFP, and for the MFP to
process the job, depends on the following variables:
•
The complexity and size of graphics
•
The speed of your computer
•
The network operating system and configuration
•
Printer personality or language (such as PCL or postscript emulation)
Creating samples
This section offers guidelines for conducting your own performance evaluation. It is important to test files like
those you print most frequently. Most print samples included with an MFP have been optimized for that
device and may not reflect the type of output you will receive. Your samples should include multiple
documents and file types, each created in the applications that will be used by the end user. The samples
should have different elements (text, graphics, and photographic images) and should vary in complexity and
page length.
Simple text documents
May include e-mail messages, memos, or a spreadsheet report, printed on plain office paper
Mixed text and graphics
May include newsletters, PowerPoint presentations printed on transparencies, or marketing
materials printed on glossy paper
Images
May include photographic images and advanced graphics (using overlays or fill patterns), printed
on photo paper
Simple text
documents
Mixed text
and graphics
Images
When evaluating more than one MFP’s performance, it is crucial that you make a fair comparison between
them.
•
Print from computer systems that closely match the typical end user’s machine.
•
Print the same files on all MFPs, using the same or equivalent print mode settings. Use the same
operating system, software application, printer language, and manufacturer’s print driver to test all
devices. (Each of these components interacts with the printing process and can affect print performance.)
•
Use more than one software application to make sure software/driver conflicts are not affecting print
quality.
•
Test multiple media sizes and types.
•
Test print features (two-sided printing, etc.).
•
Test and compare default settings. (What settings will end users use most often?)
Performance
17
If MFPs are networked, use the same client and an isolated or controlled network to provide a controlled
and repeatable environment. Network traffic can affect performance; therefore, when comparing relative
performance of MFPs, an isolated network should be used so that network traffic is the same when testing
all MFPs. You can use a sniffer on your network to record the amount of network traffic being generated.
To make a valid comparison, be sure that the amount of traffic on the network is consistent when testing
each MFP.
•
What to measure
Different testing methods can be employed to gauge the performance of the HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP
series. The following tests are commonly used:
Click-to-drop
The total print time, from the time the print command is issued, to completion of printing.
Return-to-application
The time from initiating the print command, to the time when the computer is available for other
tasks.
Pick-to-drop
The print time, from the instant the first piece of paper is picked up by the device, to completion of
printing.
Device warm-up + calibration
The time from turning the device on to the time when the device enters the Ready state. (This time
usually includes warming up the device, calibration, and booting up the device firmware.)
Warm-up time
The time it takes the device to warm up and print a simple document, after the device has been
idle for one hour.
First page out
The time from initiating the print command to the completion of the first page. Measure this from a
variety of engine conditions, such as Ready or low power mode.
Running the tests
Follow the guidelines below when measuring device performance:
•
Be sure to measure the amount of time it takes to print a complete document. (For example, you might
print a 20-page duplexed document, with a cover page printed on heavier paper.)
•
Perform each test three times to obtain an average. If the variances in the three tests are too much,
discard the results, check the system, and redo the tests.
•
If the MFP offers more than one I/O port, perform tests using each port.
•
When comparing the performance of MFPs, look beyond the speed trial data and consider the
acceptability of the output. There are definitely tradeoffs in print quality, but as you review your results,
look at the samples and consider whether the quality meets your standards. For output quality evaluation
guidelines, see page 23.
Evaluating copying performance
•
Copy the type of material you typically copy, whether a book, magazine, sales brochure, or other
high-quality content. Measure how quickly the pages copy.
Evaluating scanning performance
•
18
Scan several documents and photos. Measure how quickly the MFP scans various sources.

Innovative color laser technologies
HP ImageREt 3600
As you focus on the professional appearance of documents, print quality gains greater importance. This
importance is magnified several fold for color documents, which are often used to generate revenue or sell
important concepts. The HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series offers exceptional print quality, achieved by a
complete HP proprietary printing system solution that includes HP ImageREt 3600. It enables automatically
achieving color print quality without any intervention, without any reduction in print speed, and with the
standard amount of printer memory.
High resolution laser imaging system
Binary technology
Multi-layer technology
The HP multi-level laser exposure print system can
modulate laser dot size and adjust dot position to
produce superior tone rendition. Laser position and
power adjustments are key to creating stable
high-frequency halftones. Instead of grainy looking
images where you can see the individual dots that form
the images, you get a near photographic quality image.
This is one of the technologies that allow HP to create image quality well beyond a 600 dpi binary system.
The multi-level printing process precisely controls color by combining up to four colors within a single dot and
by varying the amount of toner in a given area. As a result, ImageREt multi-layer technology creates millions of
smooth colors, sharp images, and crisp text. In contrast, the single level (binary) printing process does not allow
the colors to be mixed within a single dot. Thus, binary printing is limited to creating colors by placing various
colored dots (limited to eight colors) close together within a cell to create the illusion of another color.
Superior image enhancement
HP implements several methods to produce the most satisfying color rendering possible out-of-the-box. These
include the following:
•
Utilizing the maximum amount of colors available to the device
•
Adjusting the color rendering for memory colors and preference color
•
Producing true-to-life skin tones
•
Optimizing the color for different media types
We have optimized the default color tables to produce the best color appearance match between a page
viewed on a monitor and that same page printed and viewed in a typical office environment.
Industry leading image enhancements
Edge Control determines how edges are rendered and consists of three components:
•
Adaptive Halftoning, which increases edge sharpness
•
Trapping, which reduces the effect of color plane misregistration by slightly overlapping
the edges of adjacent objects
•
Color Resolution Enhancement Technology (C-REt), which increases the apparent
resolution by placing each dot for the smoothest edges
Without trapping
The Edge Control option offers four settings:
•
Off—turns Trapping, Adaptive Halftoning, and C-REt to Off.
•
Light—provides minimal trapping. Adaptive Halftoning is set to On and C-REt is set to
On.
•
Normal—provides the default trapping settings. Adaptive Halftoning is set to On, and
C-REt is set to On.
•
Maximum—provides the most trapping. Adaptive Halftoning is set to On, and C-REt is set to On.

Accurate and intelligent color control
The HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series provides color that is the same from page-to-page over device life
through closed-loop color calibration and optimized customer control.
•
Closed-loop color calibration—The MFP utilizes a sophisticated dual-angle sensor to calibrate the engine,
which improves the accuracy and repeatability of the calibration. With the two-step transfer process, the
color calibration process is performed the same as a normal first step transfer. In this way, the first transfer
is always the same (OPC to ITB), and the second transfer (ITB to paper) can be independently optimized for
each paper type.
•
Optimized customer control—This feature allows you to optimize the printing process through control panel
adjustments so even printing on difficult paper types can achieve superior results.
Smart printing supplies with dual-component chemically grown toner system
•
HP Smart printing supplies—HP has engineered the latest HP Smart printing supplies with intuitive features
and built-in intelligence designed to contribute to a productive, satisfying work experience. These features
include supplies-level monitoring and proactive messages. Together, they help you maintain and replace
your printing supplies conveniently and efficiently, reducing downtime, and ensuring consistently great
output.
•
Improved toner pigments in new chemically grown ColorSphere toner—One of the critical components
HP has leveraged in distinguishing its leading line of color laser printers is chemically grown polymer
toners. HP introduced chemically grown toners for its color printers in 1998 and has been a leading force
in advanced polymer toners for color printing since. Today each HP LaserJet ColorSphere toner particle is
chemically grown to exacting standards with multiple layers designed to interact with the printing system
under precise conditions. Because of its formulation, uniform size, and spherical shape, this toner ensures a
broad range of colors, sharp black text and lines, and outstanding results on many kinds of paper. HP’s
precision printing system monitors and adjusts the charge of the toner particles and automatically calibrates
output properties for great results, every time.
Color matching
The process of matching device output color to your computer screen is quite complex because printing devices
and computer monitors use different methods of producing color. Monitors display colors by light pixels using
an RGB (red, green, blue) color process, but printing devices print colors using a CMYK (cyan, magenta,
yellow, and black) process.
Several factors can impact your ability to match printed colors to those on your monitor. These factors include:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Paper type
Printer colorants (inks or toners, for example)
Overhead lighting
Personal differences in perception of color
Software programs
Print drivers
Computer operating system
Monitors and monitor settings
Video cards and drivers
Operating environment (humidity, for example)
Keep the above factors in mind when colors on your screen do not perfectly match your printed colors. For most
users, the best method for matching colors on your screen to your printed output is to print sRGB colors.
sRGB color
Standard red-green-blue (sRGB) is a worldwide color standard that HP and Microsoft developed as a common
color language for monitors, input devices (scanners and digital cameras), and output devices (printers and
plotters). It is the default color space used for HP printing devices, Microsoft operating systems, the World Wide
Web, and most office software. The sRGB standard represents the typical Windows monitor and is the
convergence standard for high-definition television.
Output quality
21
The latest versions of Adobe PhotoShop, CorelDRAW™, Microsoft Office, and many other programs use sRGB
to communicate color. Because it is the default color space in Microsoft operating systems, sRGB has been
adopted broadly. When programs and devices use sRGB to exchange color information, typical users
experience greatly improved color matching. The sRGB standard improves your ability to match colors between
the product, the computer monitor, and other input devices automatically, and eliminates the need to become a
color expert.
Sample book color matching
The process for matching device output to preprinted sample books and standard color references is complex. In
general, you can obtain a reasonably good match to a sample book if the inks used to create the sample book
are cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. These are usually referred to as process color sample books.
Some sample books are created from spot colors. Spot colors are specially created colorants. Many of these
spot colors are outside of the range of the MFP. Most spot color sample books have companion process sample
books that provide CMYK approximations to the spot color.
Most process sample books will state which process standards were used to print the sample book. In most
cases, they will be SWOP, EURO, or DIC. To get optimal color matching to the process sample book, select the
corresponding ink emulation from the device menu. If you cannot identify the process standard, use SWOP ink
emulation.
Printing color samples
To provide more precise color matching for printed output, HP offers comprehensive color samples for HP Color
LaserJet devices. Color samples allow experienced users to get the colors they want from a variety of software
applications regardless of the paper type.
To use the color samples, select the color sample that is the closest match to the desired color. Use the sample’s
color value in your software program to describe the object you wish to match. Colors may vary depending on
paper type and the software program used. For more details on how to use the color samples, go to
www.hp.com/support/cljcm3530mfp.
Neutral gray treatment
This feature allows you to select the neutral gray treatment of either black-only or 4-color process grays.
Black-only can be selected to print black text, keeping the lines sharp and reducing the impact of color plane
misregistration. (No cyan, magenta, or yellow toners are combined to form gray.) If 4-color grays are selected,
black is printed using all four process colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black), known as process grays. This
selection is useful for printing photographs, since it produces richer grays and blacks that blend smoothly with
surrounding colors. This feature, combined with Trapping, provides greater flexibility and print quality.
22
Output quality
Evaluating output quality
This section offers some practical advice for conducting your own print quality evaluation. Use the sample
documents you created in “Creating samples” on page 17 to evaluate the print quality of the output.
Viewing samples
Ideally, quality should be evaluated under a mix of fluorescent
and incandescent lighting. Quality should not be evaluated
too close to windows, as natural light changes dramatically
with variations in weather and the time of day.
In addition, the color of the surrounding can significantly
affect quality perception. White surroundings may call undue
attention to the color of the paper. Medium or light gray is
usually the best choice for the area surrounding where the
sample documents will be evaluated.
Individuals may perceive quality differently. HP suggests that
you have several people evaluate your sample documents, in
the same environment, with a consistent light source. Have
them vote on the samples that they like by listing them in order
from the best to the worst. Allow each person to rate the
samples independently and then record the results. Also, have
each person establish a cut line for acceptable quality for the end user’s environment.
Note This process is referred to as psychometric testing and should be performed on all of the sample
documents that you are using to evaluate text, graphics, and image quality.
Evaluating print quality
Look for the following characteristics:
•
Text should be dark, solid black, without hollow spots.
•
Edges of text and graphics should be crisp and smooth.
•
There should be little or no toner scattered on the non-printed areas of the paper.
•
Solid color fills should be uniform and should not appear glossy.
•
There should be no banding across graphics or images.
•
Images should be clear and sharp, without graininess.
•
Images should look natural and realistic.
Evaluating document durability and usability
After you have finished evaluating the print quality of your samples, evaluate the documents’ durability and
usability. Test the following:
•
Can the printed output be fed through a copier without being damaged?
•
Will the printed output fade over time or smear with moisture?
•
Can the printed output be easily scratched, melted, or otherwise damaged?
•
Is the printed output durable? Can it be folded?
•
Does the best quality output require printing on special paper?
Output quality
23
Evaluating copy quality
High resolution does not directly correlate to copy quality. Copy the type of material you typically copy,
whether a book, magazine, sales brochure, photograph or other high-quality content.
•
Does the copy quality meet your expectations?
•
How easy is it to adjust image quality and select output options from the control panel?
•
Does it take multiple adjustments and multiple copies to get good copy quality?
Evaluating scanning quality
Scan several documents, images, and photos.
•
Does the quality of the scanned image meet your expectations?
•
How easy is it to obtain a satisfactory image?
•
How easy is it to configure scanning options from the control panel?
•
Is the scanning software easy to use? Are there options for scanning specific document and image types?

Total cost of ownership
Reduce total costs with the
value-added features of
this HP Color LaserJet.
A successful business MFP has to offer more than just superior performance and outstanding print quality. For
many businesses, the total cost of ownership (TCO) is a critical part of the purchasing decision. TCO takes into
account everything from the initial investment to support and maintenance costs. A number of elements designed
into this MFP contribute to significant cost savings over time.
Designed for efficiency
•
Use less space—the HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series is designed to sit on a desktop, yet has all the
features of a high-performance color MFP. By supporting one device with print, copy, scan, digital send,
and fax capabilities rather than four separate devices, you can reduce costs by managing fewer supplies
and minimizing storage requirements and service interruptions.
•
A low-maintenance design and automatic two-sided printing and copying reduce the need to interact with
the product and help keep your office productive.
•
The optional input tray 3 features automatic media size detection for accurate printing, saving time and
eliminating paper and toner waste. For more information, see “Appendix C—Ordering information” on
page 39.
•
Get black prints for the same cost as on a black-and-white HP LaserJet MFP—providing general office
effectiveness, while also allowing you to print in color!3
•
Supplies are designed to maintain a low cost of ownership. Technology incorporated in the cartridge
enables print quality adjustments throughout the life of your cartridge to help maintain the quality of your
output from the first page to the last and from cartridge to cartridge.
•
The HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series offers both regular and high capacity replacement print
cartridges for even more choice and cost-effectiveness. High-capacity supplies help ensure a low
intervention rate so you can keep focused on what’s important—your business.
•
Use less power—the MFP’s Sleep mode conserves energy by partially turning off the power supply during
periods of MFP inactivity.
•
The familiar HP interface is preferred by most office users and requires very little training.
•
Meet your unique needs by upgrading with a variety of optional features, including additional memory,
storage, and third-party solutions. For more information, see “Appendix C—Ordering information”
on page 39.
Helps control color usage
Color can make your business more professional, effective, and profitable, but there are times when you may
want to control access to color. HP offers an award-winning color access control solution. Buyer’s Lab gave
HP an “Outstanding Achievement” award in December 2007 for the extensive color control features included
with its laser printers and multifunction products:
•
Assign color access to specific users or workgroups—The HP color access control solution makes it easy to
assign color access to specific users using the Universal Print Driver or HP Web Jetadmin’s fleet
configuration capability. That way, people who truly need color—such as your sales team and marketing
department—can use it, and those who don’t need it can be assigned to default black-and-white printing
Total cost of ownership
25
automatically. This prevents color resources from being depleted on personal or non-essential print jobs and
helps lower overall printing costs significantly.
•
Assign color access by application—By allowing you to designate certain applications for printing color and
others for printing black-and-white, HP color access control helps ensure that users don’t inadvertently print
in color on low priority pages such as web pages and e-mail. This level of control enables you to assign
both black-and-white and color documents to one color MFP, consolidating all of your print jobs.
•
Track color use by job, by user, and by device—HP’s color access control solution generates real-time and
periodic usage reports that make it easy to track color use by job, by user, and by device. Plus, it allows
you to easily allocate costs to individual departments. 9 This increases awareness of color usage policies
across the company and helps employees internalize these important guidelines.
•
Auto color sensing complements color access control features by performing an automatic analysis of each
scanned page. While the MFP’s default mode is color copy, if it determines that a page is black-and-white,
then the MFP will copy it in black-and-white. This provides significant cost savings in color toner cartridges.
This feature benefits managed print services customers in particular, since they are charged for a
monochrome click rather than a color click.
Budget-friendly professional color printing
Nobody knows your business and customers like you do. With HP color printing solutions, you can produce
professional-looking documents in-house and make the desired impression on employees and customers for less
than the cost of outsourcing. Leverage your unique understanding of specific markets and individual clients with
customized and personalized messages. You have the flexibility to outsource printing or get the job done
in-house, according to what makes sense for each project. You’ll have more control over printing what you
need, when you need it—at new levels of affordability and quality.
Critical components of the solution are HP ColorSphere toner, the reliable all-in-one cartridge design, and a full
line of professional HP papers. HP’s papers—available in a variety of professional finishes and weights—are
perfect for producing flyers, postcards, and newsletters. Use with improved HP ColorSphere toner for
premium-quality marketing materials. Multiple gloss settings in the printing system work with HP’s improved
ColorSphere toner and coating technology on HP Color Laser Photo paper to provide outstanding image
reproduction and high quality, reliable results.
Cost-effective digital workflows
The HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series enables you to rethink your communication processes and distribute
digital paperwork around the corner or around the world. Doing so can dramatically cut printing and paper
expenses. Optional HP Digital Sending Software reduces manual processes and not only enables content to be
available sooner and processes to be initiated faster but also cuts down on the costs of physically handling and
distributing information.7 Storing content electronically conserves floor space and money that would have been
spent on physical storage. HP DSS streamlines your document workflow by incorporating paper documents into
business processes to improve efficiency and productivity and to save money.

Total cost of ownership
Evaluating total cost of ownership
An MFP’s value consists of more than just purchase price and the cost of supplies. Consider the following
factors:
•
Initial purchase price, including enough memory to print complex documents in the highest print quality
mode, plus any accessories needed in the office or workteam environment (such as a print server,
wireless options, an automatic two-sided printing unit, or additional paper trays).
Note To ensure accurate comparisons between products, be sure to compare street prices (or what you
would actually pay) instead of list prices.
•
Warranty and service costs. (What is the standard warranty? Are upgraded service plans available?)
•
Expandability. (Does the MFP support additional features?)
•
Opportunity costs of outsourcing vs. in-house printing.
•
User productivity costs. (How easy is it to learn to use the MFP? How easy is it to print your documents
correctly?)
•
Special paper costs. (Does the MFP require special paper? Can recycled paper be used?)
•
Supplies costs. (Do you have to purchase a starter kit? Does the MFP come with demonstration supplies
that have a reduced life? What does it cost, in both expense and downtime, to replace supplies?)
•
Cost per page. It is difficult for end users to calculate the cost per page due to many variables. Therefore,
many manufacturers provide a cost per page calculation. When assessing cost per page, keep the
following in mind:
•
Make sure the cost per page associated with a MFP’s print sample represents that sample. Some
manufacturers may quote the cost of printing in a draft mode, when the sample they give you is
printed in their best mode, which requires more toner or ink.
•
Take note of whether special paper is required for the print sample.
•
Make sure all the supplies are included in the cost per page calculation and not hidden as service
items. Also, remember that supplies used during routine cleaning and warm-up cycles are not always
included in the supply’s yield, which directly affects cost.
•
Watch for other hidden costs (such as unusable output, which wastes toner).

Security
Rest easy with proactive
security management.
HP has made security an integral component of its imaging and printing devices and solutions. In addition to
supporting a wide range of standard, trusted security protocols, HP digital senders and HP LaserJet printers and
MFPs offer industry-leading security capabilities and solutions that are designed to enable secure management,
network communications, output, access, and device integrity. Moreover, HP has reduced complexity—the
biggest obstacle to ensuring end-to-end security. Impressive security features are frequently ignored because IT
can find them difficult to implement, so HP focuses not only on delivering state-of-the-art security capabilities but
creating seamlessly integrated, easy-to-use solutions as well.
Comprehensive MFP security
Secure all confidential and business-critical data on the HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series and ensure only
authorized individuals have access to that data. Important options to consider when securing your devices
include:
•
Disk drive lock—The hard disk drive on the HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series can be physically
secured from theft and tampering using an accessory lock that requires a physical key for removal.
•
Server-based and device-based access—With the optional HP Digital Sending Software, combined with
authentication options available from the device, you can configure Windows NTLM, LDAP, Kerberos, PIN,
and Novell authentication that integrates with your existing infrastructure. These authentication options,
available through optional software and by default on the device, can help your organization manage user
access, prevent unwanted printing and digital sending, help secure access to management utilities, and
prevent unwanted device configurations.
•
Color access control—HP’s suite of color access control features lets you closely monitor color usage, enable
or disable color by individual users or groups or even applications, disable color printing and copying
entirely until it’s needed for special projects, and report costs back to specific clients, projects, workgroups,
or departments.
•
Secure overwrite of data—The HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series provides built-in capability for
overwriting data stored on it. There are three ways that data can be overwritten securely:
•
Whenever a job finishes, all the associated files can be overwritten
•
User data stored in the form of Proof and Hold, Quick Copy, and Stored Jobs can be overwritten at
specific time intervals
•
The entire contents of the hard drive can be overwritten securely when a hard disk is decommissioned
or redeployed in your environment
HP offers multiple mechanisms to erase job data and stored data, including “sanitize” erase functionality
that conforms to U.S. DoD (Department of Defense) overwrite algorithm specifications.
•
28
Encryption of data—Encryption of network-transmitted data is available on the HP Color LaserJet CM3530
MFP series with IPsec, which allows you to encrypt data that travels between the MFP, the print spooler, and
digital send destinations, provided you have configured each network resource to use IPsec. Encryption of
network-transmitted data stored on the HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series hard disk is also available
via Capella Technologies’ SecureDIMM II and other optional solutions. These accessory modules help
secure the print job from the printing client to the MFP’s internal printing engine, plus it keeps the print job
encrypted while it is retained on the hard disk drive. Passwords are also encrypted when stored persistently
Security
to help ensure protection of this critical information. Device management data that travels over the network
between the device and the Embedded Web Server (EWS) or HP Web Jetadmin (WJA) can also be
encrypted. EWS communication is configured for encryption through the Jetdirect Security Wizard, where a
certificate can be loaded on the Jetdirect Network Interface Card. This enables secure “HTTPS” web
communication through SSL. WJA can also be configured for encrypted communication using the Simple
Network Management Protocol (SNMP) version 3.
•
Encrypted hard disk option—Protect data stored on the MFP with HP high-performance secure hard disks.
AES encryption ensures the device hard drive is not accessible if removed from the device. For more
information, see “Appendix C—Ordering information” on page 39.
•
Control panel lock—This feature within HP Web Jetadmin allows network administrators to deter
unauthorized users from changing certain device configurations and control panel settings by establishing a
password and locking the control panel. You can choose from multiple levels of security, locking out specific
control panel menus and allowing users to change the rest of the menus, or locking out all of the menus. It is
even possible to lock the device’s STOP button.
•
Private printing—Four standard and one optional job retention features enable private printing: Proof and
Hold, Personal Job, Quick Copy, Stored Job, and Pull Printing.
Proof and Hold
Provides a quick and easy way to print one copy and proof it before printing the remaining copies. You can
either continue printing the remaining copies, which have been saved at the MFP, or cancel them from the
MFP’s control panel. After the additional copies are printed, the Proof and Hold job is deleted from the MFP.
This reduces network traffic, paper waste, and supplies costs.
Personal Job
Protects confidential documents. This feature lets you specify that a job will not be printed until you release it
using a 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) through the MFP’s control panel. When you enter the PIN in
the driver, it is sent to the MFP as part of the print job.
Quick Copy
Prints the requested number of copies of a job and stores a copy of the job on the MFP’s hard disk. Additional
copies of the job can be printed later, directly from the MFP’s control panel.
Stored Job
Allows you to download a print job to the MFP’s hard disk without printing it. You can then print the job at any
time from the MFP’s control panel. For example, you may want to download a personnel form, calendar, time
sheet, or accounting form that other users can access and print. To store a print job permanently on the hard
disk, select the Stored Job option in the driver when printing the job. A Stored Job can be made private by
selecting “PIN to print” in the driver.
Pull Printing
Prevents documents from getting “lost” in the output tray by allowing print jobs to be saved electronically in the
device, or on a server, until the authorized user is ready to print them. HP offers Pull Printing solutions from
leading third-party providers to help safeguard your imaging and printing environment.
Innovative network safeguards
With more devices on the network, your business is at greater risk. Protect the integrity of your entire network
infrastructure with HP secure solutions.
•
•
Send digital data safely—HP devices support a wide range of industry standard and trusted security
protocols, including:
•
IPsec secure networking for printers and MFPs can be utilized in either IPv4 or IPv6 networks to encrypt
information on the network and help ensure data gets to the intended destination(s) 10
•
Secure-IPP for encryption of print jobs
•
X.509 certificates can be loaded on the device to enable Embedded Web Server/device
communication and authentication
•
IP (Internet Protocol) Access Control Lists for protected printing and management
Bridge-free faxing—The HP LaserJet MFP Analog Fax Accessory 500 (standard on the HP Color LaserJet
CM3530fs MFP) allows the device to act as a standalone fax machine to prevent bridging of network to
analog interfaces.
Security
29
Scalable security management
Easily monitor and maintain the security of the HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series and your network and
more readily comply with audit and privacy requirements with HP security solutions. HP helps boost security and

•
Fleet-based security management—HP Web Jetadmin provides powerful capabilities that allow you to
efficiently and effectively manage security in environments with many devices, remotely manage all of your
organization’s imaging and printing resources, employ SNMPv3 to encrypt data and control access, and
utilize checklists to assure proper configuration. HP participates in the U.S. National Institute of Standards
and Technology security checklist program and has a checklist available to help securely configure MFPs in
fleet environments based on best practices documented by HP security experts. The most recent checklist is
available at http://checklists.nist.gov/chklst_detail.cfm?config_id=128. The checklist is applicable to
multiple LaserJet MFP models, is based on HP Web Jetadmin security settings, and is updated regularly.
•
Device-based security management—For environments where few devices are deployed, IT may choose to
manage each device individually via its Embedded Web Server’s management interface, which allows for
HTTPS encryption and access control. In addition, HP provides a Jetdirect security wizard and EWS Security
page settings to assist in proper security setup.
•
Usage reporting—Track usage for all models by job, user, device, or application via the HP Web Jetadmin
Report Generation plug-in (standard with HP Web Jetadmin, version 10.x).

Reliability matters
•
The HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series has HP’s legendary reliability and ruggedness. With a
recommended monthly page volume of 2,000 to 6,000 pages, 11 the MFP is built to stand up to the
demands of today’s fast-paced business environments.
•
Prior to its introduction, a new HP LaserJet device undergoes rigorous HP testing to ensure that it provides
consistent high-quality printing. Tests are performed with a large sample of devices through each step of the
design process, to be certain that the printer measures up to HP standards. Throughout this testing,
HP discovers and resolves any issues that would compromise print quality. The result is a solid, reliable
product that produces consistent, excellent print quality over the life of the printer and its supplies.
Worry-free operation
The MFP comes standard with a one-year, next-day, on-site, limited warranty. Additional service and support
options are available, including network installation and extended on-site warranties, which vary by region.
HP support services provide a full range of services to help you gain control of all aspects of your printing

Evaluating reliability
At HP, we typically test multiple devices in various environmental conditions to evaluate engine reliability.
We run the devices to engine life and record the supplies’ life, jam rate, and misfeed rate, continually
improving each new generation of HP products.
This kind of extensive, long-term testing is beyond the limits of most companies’ resources; however, it is
possible to estimate their MFP’s engine reliability. One option is to compare other manufacturers’ lifetime
duty-cycle ratings, base warranty (make sure it is at least one-year), and three-year warranty costs. When
comparing the HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series with MFPs from other manufacturers, consider the
following:
•
Will the MFP print legacy print jobs correctly?
•
Will the MFP perform consistently under various environmental conditions?
•
After a few thousand pages, is the print quality the same as it was out of the box?
•
How easy is it to maintain and calibrate the MFP?
•
When connected to a network, does the MFP print correctly every time?
•
What is the quality of customer support?

Reliability
Environmental responsibility
Minimize your impact with
an environmentally
conscious device.
As one of the world’s largest consumer IT companies, a leading IT supplier to small and medium-size businesses,
and a leader in enterprise computing, HP’s largest impact on the environment is through its products. The
environmental performance of products is largely determined at the design stage. HP’s Design for the
Environment initiative is driving improvements at every stage in the product lifecycle—helping reduce the
amount of energy, paper, packaging, and materials used at HP and by our customers. Through intelligent
design, we can reduce the environmental impact of our products, and of our customers.
Reduce costs
Reduce the cost of power, waste, and asset disposal with energy-efficient HP solutions.
•
Minimize idle power use and still print quickly. Innovative Instant-on Technology reduces power
consumption by up to 50 percent, yet delivers the first page up to four times faster than products without this
technology. HP estimates that for our monochrome LaserJet products alone, Instant-on Technology has
reduced CO2 emissions by over 5.25 million tons to date—the equivalent of removing 1.1 million cars from
the road for one year. 12
•
Cut the cost of energy consumption. The MFP automatically reduces power consumption after a designated
period of inactivity and requires less than 1 watt of power in Off mode. And with HP Web Jetadmin, you
can remotely schedule sleep and wake-up modes to conserve power.
•
Optimize energy use. We are working to meet or exceed the eco-label standards established around the
world by conducting active power testing based on the ENERGY STAR methodology. As an ENERGY STAR
partner, Hewlett-Packard Company has determined that the HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP series meets
ENERGY STAR guidelines for energy efficiency. (Contact your HP Sales Representative for more information
on selecting ENERGY STAR qualified products.)
•
Reduce paper use. With the HP Universal Print Driver, you can easily set automatic two-sided printing for
individual devices or entire fleets. Within HP, using our Universal Print Driver to configure printers for
two-sided printing, we expect to save up to 800 tons of paper a year, for an annual savings of
$7.7 million.
•
Make recycling convenient and practical. Since 1991, HP’s industry-leading Planet Partners recycling
program has made it easy to recycle printers, cartridges, and other technology products responsibly. We
make the process hassle-free for you by providing postage-paid shipping materials in many regions. With
operations in over 50 countries, HP has recycled 1 billion cumulative pounds to date, with a goal of
doubling our annual recovery rate to reach 2 billion pounds by 2010. See www.hp.com/go/recycle for
more information.
Save resources
Easily recycle materials, save paper, and use fewer resources across the entire lifecycle of the MFP.
•
Consume less paper by printing on both sides. HP Web Jetadmin and the HP Universal Print Driver make it
easy to set automatic duplex printing for individual MFPs or entire fleets, allowing you to reduce the cost
and volume of paper used.
Environmental responsibility
33
•
Capture and send documents electronically: HP can help automate
workflows and help change the way you do business. With the ability to
capture and deliver documents digitally, you can speed document-based
workflows and lower the amount of paper your organization uses.
•
As shown at right, Smart Web print improves printing from Web pages.
Eliminate extra pages and right-edge clipping and enjoy the ability to
combine content and print exactly what you want, without wasting
resources. Download the tool from www.hp.com/go/smartwebprinting.
Evaluating environmental responsibility
When evaluating environmental responsibility, consider the following:
•
Does the MFP reduce power when not in use? Are there tools available to schedule automatic device
shut-downs?
•
How much power does the MFP use?
•
Does the MFP ship with automatic two-sided printing and copying? Can you set automatic two-sided
printing as a default?

power mode so your print job is done sooner. An InfoTrends study shows the typical office print job is three to five pages long:
www.infotrends.com/public/Content/Presentations/officeprinteruse.pdf. Time To Completion of a typical office print job tested on
HP and select competing products. Actual results may vary.
