INTRODUCTION
New Jacobsen J 501 Engine
Jacobsen engineers developed the new J501 engine to meet the re-
quirements for a tough, durable, economical and easy-to-maintain
- lawn mower power source. All of the basic features of a standard
two-cycle engine were incorporated into the design plus these
important improvements:
1. A patented centric flow induction system to provide fresh,
positive and complete lubrication to all moving engine parts,
2. A new process hard piston coat with a surface that assures a -
porous, lubricant retaining finish.
3. Exhaust ports have been ‘“bridged’’ with integral cast fins to
improve heat transfer to the exhaust area for cooler, more
uniform cylinder temperatures.
4. The new improvements have permitted a reduced, 50 to 1 fuel-
to-oil mix for more efficient engine operation.
5. Easy access to starter and ignition components for servicing,
These outstanding basic features of Jacobsen engines have been
retained in the new J501:
1. High performance ignition system for smoother operation.
2. All crankshaft main bearings are anti-friction roller for added
strength and longer crankshaft life.
3. Connecting rod is equipped with full compliment roller bearings
on crank pin end.
. Cast iron cylinder liner,
. Patented responsive governor system.
. Patented easier starting,
. Fixed jet carburetor - no adjustments required.
co =I 9 сло +
. Sound design, quality parts and careful assembly for heavy
duty performance.

PREPARATION OF FUEL MIXTURE
Properly mixed and clean fuel is essential for trouble free engine
operation. The following items are required:
1. A clean and suitable container for fuel mixture, preferrably
a 5 gallon (18.92 liter) can, or two 2-1/2 gallon (9.46 liter)
cans.
2, Jacobsen Premium 501 Two Cycle Oil.
3. Regular Grade Gasoline (Leaded or Non-Leaded),

SPARK PLUG
Remove, inspect and reset spark plug gap at 0.040’ (1.016 mm)
(See Fig. 4) every 100 hours of operation or prior to every season.
If spark plug fouls or shorts out replace or clean, Spark plugs for
this engine may be cleaned with a standard sand blast cleaner.
The plug should he washed off in a cleaning solvent and blown
off with air after cleaning to remove all sand particles. Inspect
area deep inside plug for particles of sand (See Fig. 4).
Spark Plug Terminal and Cover (See Fig, 4B)
1. Position spark plug wire inside of terminal so that the end of
the wire is even with the inside of the off-set in the terminal.
2. Push the wire down on contact point in terminal. Crimp sides of
terminal around wire. Make certain contact point is completely
inside of wire. |
3, Insert terminal and spark plug wire through small opening in
cover and bring wire out through large opening in cover, *

AIR INTAKE SCREEN
Periodically check (clean if required) for accumulation of grass
clippings and debris on air intake screen around starter to prevent
engine damage caused by overheating and overspeeding, The fan
housing should be removed and cleaned of grass clippings.
AIR FILTER
If the engine slows down, smokes or stutters excessively, or does
not run smoothly, the air filter should he cleaned,
Clean filter every 25 hours of operation and at begining of every
season. Under severe dust, clean as often as conditions warrant.
NOTE
Service or replace air filter element regularly. A plugged air
filter element will cause hard starting, loss of power and
excessive spark plug fouling.
Foam type (See Fig. 5) - To remove filter element for cleaning,
loosen the two attaching screws holding body to bracket. Do not
remove screws. Turn body counter-clockwise until heads of screws
line up with large hole in slots, Pull body away from bracket and
remove filter from body. Wash and rinse filter thoroughly in ker-
osene, detergent or like solvent, Compress filter to remove cleaning
solvent. Reoil filter with approximately two (30 cc)tablespoons of
clean S.A.E. 30 oil. Compress to distribute oil evenly throughout
filter, Before reassembling, clean inside and outside of filter body
and bracket. Insert filter into body, position body with large hole
in slots over head of attaching screws in bracket and turn body
clockwise. Tighten attaching screws securely. -

EXHAUST PORTS AND MUFFLER
Figure 4
An accumulation of carbon in either the exhaust ports or muffler
will reduce power output considerably. To remove the carbon, remove
the spark plug and muffler. Slowly turn the crankshaft of the engine
until the piston is below or flush with the bottom of the ports. This
leaves the ports fully open for cleaning.
IMPORTANT
The piston surface will become damaged if left in front of
ports while cleaning.
The carbon may be removed from the ports with a small knife or like
instrument. (See Fig, 6 ) After the ports have been cleaned, crank
the engine quickly several times to blow out carbon that may have '
fallen into cylinder during cleaning,
The internal and external muffler openings should also be cleaned
to prevent restriction of the exhaust which would cause a power loss.
Figure 6
If frequent spark plug fouling is encountered after port cleaning, it
may be necessary to clean the combustion chamber. See your nearest
Jacobsen Authorized Service Station.

Flywheel removal - Remove the starter and fan housing from the
engine, and remove the nut, washer and starter hub from the crank-
shaft. Screw ‘‘Knock-off’’ nut (Service Tool No, 805250) fully down
on the crankshaft end. Rap the top of the nut sharply with a hammer
to jar the flywheel loose on the taper of the crankshaft and remove
the nut and flywheel from the crankshaft.
If the “‘Knock-off’’ nut is not available, screw the original nut back
on the crankshaft until the top of the nut is flush with the end of the
shaft, Place a hardwood block on top of the nut and rap the top of
the block sharply with a hammer to jar the flywheel loose on the
crankshaft and remove the nut and flywheel from the crankshaft.
IMPORTANT
Do not pry on the underside of the flywheel to loosen. Do
not lose the key in the crankshaft keyway.
Ignition Timing - The ignition timing is fixed within limits.

STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
This engine can be washed down with a hose periodically and prior _

The carburetor is drained by pushing upward on the convenient bow

Gum deposits would make it impossible to start the engine and
cause expensive repairs when the machine is put back into operation.
