Traditional Amplifier Power Supply
•
A traditional amplifier uses a power supply which
feeds voltage to the transistors that drive the speaker.
•
As in the example to the right we have a 90 Volt, 10
Amp Power supply and we are only using 30V of the
90V to send a signal to the speaker.
•
The transistors have to disperse the remaining 60V.
•
The only way transistors can do this is by releasing the
excess voltage and current as heat.
•
How much energy is then wasted as heat?
•
The formula is Voltage x Current (60V x 10A)= 600W
•
That’s a lot in anyone’s language. In fact it can be as
high as a small bar heater in heat dissipation.
Dynamic Series

TDCTM (Tracking-DownconverterTM) Power Supply
•
•
•
•
•
•
Sunfire amplifiers also need a power supply, but they
view the world a little differently.
As in the example to the right, Sunfire still uses a
power supply that can deliver 90 Volt at 10 Amp, and
in the example we are still using 30V of the available
90V to drive the speaker, however…..
Sunfire amplifiers continuously adjust the power
supply voltage so it always sits a mere 6 Volts above
the voltage we need to send a signal to the speaker.
What’s the result? The transistors still need to deal
with the excess voltage, however with the TDCTM
power supply it is a mere 6 Volts.
Again, the formula is Volts x Current (6V x 10A)= 60W
Not a lot at all, that’s an average light bulb in heat
generated, instead of an average bar type heater.

Standard Subwoofer Designs
Big box Subwoofers
Small box Subwoofers
•
•
•
•
•
Anyone can build a high output, big box
subwoofer.
It doesn’t take much force to achieve the
compression needed (there’s a lot of air in
there).
You simply need a small amount of power, and
a large box.
Speaker does not overheat, and everything is
OK. This is called a Low Back-emf design (Low
electromotive force)
Dynamic Series
•
•
•
•
•
High output and low frequency in a small box is
another story.
To achieve compression it takes a LOT more force.
Air pressure inside needs to be substantially higher.
If you simply shrink the box you end up with WEAK
bass because you are lacking compression.
However, if you use a lot of power you risk
overheating the speaker causing it to fail.
So if you want reliability, it is simply going to be a
small cute looking subwoofer with small amounts of
power.

Sunfire Technology
High Back-emf Design (High electromotive force)
•
•
•
•
To have high output you need to achieve compression regardless
of how big or small the box is.
A large box subwoofer is a Low Back-emf design because it does
not need a lot of power to achieve compression.
In a small box we must then need a High Back-emf design and a
great deal of power to achieve the same compression. Makes
sense !
To achieve this High Back-emf, Sunfire altered the geometry of
the woofer by redesigning:
•
•
•
The magnet and voice coil to withstand more power (more heat)
Extended the distance of the speaker cone travel (more compression)
Coupled with a Tracking DownconverterTM amplifier which can
deliver huge amounts of force from a small form factor, and
impossibly small cabinets, Sunfire subwoofers:

Sunfire Technology
FFDTM (Frequency Filtration Design)
•
•
•
FFDTM is a Technology found in ALL Sunfire
Subwoofers. It greatly improves accurate
reproduction of sound and gives them a remarkable
“sonic intelligence” that you will hear and feel every
time you listen to your favourite music or movies.
FFDTM plays louder at lower frequencies, remaining
linear. In Figure A, the point where the two curves
intersect is about 85Hz. Notice the higher output at
lower frequencies and how the Sunfire output
remains linear as the frequency increases.
Figure B is a distortion vs. power curve for Sunfire
and three competitors, notice that Sunfire has lower
distortion with relatively flat response, resulting in a
more musical tonality with less distortion at higher
output.

StillbassTM Anti-shake Technology
•
•
•
•
Stillbass™ is a patented technology, developed by
Sunfire as an innovative solution to the mechanical
vibration of in-wall and on-wall subwoofers.
Using an actuator (Figure A) that moves in opposition
to the woofer, to virtually eliminate destructive and
intrusive mechanical vibration that subwoofers
naturally produce.
By controlling the subwoofer’s “shake”, StillBass™
technology allows the woofer to be placed in a wide
variety of locations rarely considered for high quality
bass.
Used in both the HRS In-Wall and Subrosa (Figure B)
models, Sunfire’s patented StillBass™ technology shows
their commitment to delivering the ultimate home
audio experience through innovative design and an
unparalleled attention to detail
