Flat Six: The New Watch Line from Porsche Design
Grenchen/Stuttgart. The new Flat Six is a watchmaking confession of faith in Porsche. This watch is uncompromisingly sporting and exudes technical esthetics. Its
name – Flat Six – is linked to the six-cylinder boxer engines that played a significant
role in establishing Porsche’s global reputation. It remains the driving force in the
back of every legendary Porsche 911 to date. Flat, because the cylinders are arranged horizontally in two opposing banks of three, and boxer – the German term
for Flat Six – because the pistons “box” back and forth.
The predecessors to today’s Flat Six motors were air-cooled. The unmistakable
wiper rings on its pistons were one of the characteristic features of these machines.
The Flat Six watch from Porsche Design uses these rings as a design element on
the flanks of the case. The rotor for automatic winding in the design of Porsche alloy wheels on the movement creates a further reference to the Porsche 911. The
watchmaking innovation in the traditional and concise Porsche Design typography
is carried over to the watch face and bezel with its tachymeter scale to measure
velocity. The Flat Six makes a statement not least because of its large 44.5 mm
case. The Flat Six is available as the Flat Six P’6340 Automatic Chronograph, Flat
Six P’6320 Quartz Chronograph, or Flat Six P’6310 Automatic. The Flat Six models
complement the existing Indicator, Dashboard, and Heritage Porsche Design watch
lines.
Flat Six P’6340 Automatic Chronograph
The Flat Six P’6340 Automatic Chronograph is equipped with an automatic movement. The watch has its own test certificate issued by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse
des Chronomètres (COSC) in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland. A unique feature of
the Flat Six P’6340 Automatic Chronograph is the triangular indicator of the running
seconds hand. Just a short glance is enough to check whether the watch is run-

ning. The red-marked tips on the counter and seconds hands are additional functional aids. The ergonomically shaped buttons for start-stop and reset functions
integrated into the case provide practical operating assistance for the use of the
water-resistant chronograph that is water-resistant up to a diving depth of 120 meters. The crown itself is also integrated into the case and thus well protected
against impacts. The sapphire caseback provides a view of the inner workings of
the watch, where the reliable Valjoux 7750 movement ticks away.
Flat Six P’6320 Quartz Chronograph
The Flat Six P’6320 Quartz Chronograph is driven by a quartz movement that offers
two different stopwatch functions. First of all, it is possible to stop normal time intervals – quite precisely thanks to a 1/10th second indicator. As with a standard
chronograph, various intervals can be measured and added to an overall time. A
special feature is the second function, however, the so-called split-time function.
After reading the interim time, the lower button is pressed again. All of the hands
make up the time passed, and the original timekeeping can continue. Both, the
stopped minutes and as well as the stopped seconds, are shown by central hands.
The seconds hand is white with a red tip and the minutes hand is red to better tell
them apart.
Flat Six P’6310 Automatic
The current Porsche Design Collection is enhanced with the first three-hand model
Flat Six P’6310 Automatic. It is a purist variation of timekeeping: superluminova
coated hands pass over a dial with exceptionally clear hour index marks and a
plain date indicator at the 4. So that nothing interferes with the clarity of the time
indication, the Arabic numerals of the minute-scale have been engraved into the
bezel at five-minute intervals. Thanks to a sapphire crystal, the caseback is transparent. The automatic movement and the rotor in the design of Porsche alloy
wheels are thus easily visible.
