Getting Started

Read this manual thoroughly to become familiar with how the navigation system operates.

Keeping your eyes on the road and your mind on the drive is important for safe driving. The navigation system has built-in features intended to help keep your eyes on the road and mind on the drive. Some features may be disabled while driving. Note that these functions will be grayed-out. A grayed-out function indicates it is not available when the vehicle is moving.

All functions are available when the vehicle is parked.

Do the following before driving:

• Become familiar with the navigation system operation, hard keys on the faceplate, and touch-sensitive screen buttons of the navigation system.

Set up the audio by presetting favorite stations, setting the tone, and adjusting the speakers.

• Set up the navigation features before beginning driving, such as entering an address or a preset destination.

• Set up your phone numbers in advance so they can be called easily with the press of a single button or a single voice command (for navigation systems equipped with phone capability).

1-4

{ CAUTION:

Taking your eyes off the road too long or too often while using the navigation system could cause a crash resulting in injury or death to you or others. Focus your attention on driving.

{ CAUTION:

Avoid looking too long or too often at the moving map on the navigation screen. This could cause a crash and you or others can be injured or killed. Use the turn-by-turn voice guidance directions whenever possible.

Use the navigation system to:

• Plan a route.

• Select a destination using various methods and choices.

• Follow turn-by-turn route and map guidance with voice prompts, only if permitted by traffic laws, controls, and conditions.

• Receive RDS broadcast announcements.

You should always be alert and obey traffic and roadway laws and instructions, regardless of the guidance from the navigation system. Because the navigation system uses street map information that does not include all traffic restrictions or the latest road changes, it may suggest using a road that is now closed for construction or a turn that is prohibited by signs at the intersection. Because the system uses limited information, you must always evaluate whether following the system’s directions is safe and legal for the current conditions.

1-5

When the navigation system is turned on, a screen may appear with the information below, and you must read and acknowledge the information it contains.

After you acknowledge the start up information you will be able to access the NAV (navigation) and DEST

(destination) functions. Once accessed, you can enter or delete information in the navigation system or access other functions. See instructions later in this section.

{ CAUTION:

Taking your eyes off the road for extended periods could cause a crash resulting in injury or death to you or others.

To help avoid a crash in which you or others could be killed:

• Always concentrate on your driving first by keeping your eyes and mind on the road, and your hands on the wheel.

• Follow system directions only if permitted by traffic laws, controls, and conditions.

• Before using this system, read the owner’s manual and learn how it operates.

• Some system controls cannot be used the when vehicle is moving.

Each time the vehicle is started and the navigation system is turned on, the Caution screen will appear.

If the Caution screen appears, touch OK to accept the

Caution. If OK is not selected, all hard keys except for NAV (navigation) and DEST (destination) can be

1-6

accessed. Once the NAV or DEST hard keys are pressed, this Caution screen will appear and OK must be pressed to access the navigation map.

When getting started you may set the navigation system to your preference or delete information you may have entered using various options.

Language — English/Metric

To change the language of the navigation screens, see “DIC Vehicle Customization” in the Index of your vehicles owner manual.

To change the navigation screens from English or metric, see “DIC Operation and Displays” in the Index of your vehicles owner manual.

Deleting Personal Information

This navigation system can record and store destinations and personal information such as names and addresses. At times, such as when you are disposing of your vehicle, you may want to delete this information. See “Previous Destinations — Deleting” and

“Address Book — Editing and Deleting Entries” under

Destination on page 2-12 for deleting this information.

Storing Radio Station Presets

This feature allows you to store up to 36 preset stations.

You can mix AM, FM, and XM (if equipped). To store presets, do the following:

1. Press the O (power) knob to turn the system on.

2. If viewing a map screen, touch the source screen button, press the AUDIO key, or press the

FAV (favorite) key.

3. Select the band.

4. Seek or tune to the desired station, to select the station.

5. Press and hold one of the preset screen buttons for more than one and a half seconds.

6. Repeat the steps for each preset.

Global Positioning System (GPS)

The navigation system determines the position of your vehicle by using satellite signals, various vehicle signals, and map data.

At times, other interferences such as the satellite condition, road configuration, the condition of the vehicle and/or other circumstances can interfere with the navigation system’s ability to determine the accurate position of the vehicle.

The GPS shows the current position of your vehicle using signals sent by the GPS Satellites of the

United States Department of Defense. When your vehicle is not receiving signals from the satellites, a symbol appears on the map screen. Refer to

Symbols on page 2-7.

This system may not be available or interferences may occur if any of the following are true:

• Signals are obstructed by tall buildings, trees, large trucks, or a tunnel.

• Objects are located on the rear shelf of the vehicle.

• Satellites are being repaired or improved.

• After-market glass tinting has been applied to the vehicle’s rear windshield.

Notice: Do not apply after-market glass tinting to the vehicle’s windows. Glass tinting will interfere with the system’s ability to receive GPS signals and cause the system to malfunction. You might have to replace the window to correct the problem.

This would not be covered by your warranty.

For more information if the GPS is not functioning

properly, see If the System Needs Service on page 2-44 and Problems with Route Guidance on page 2-44.

2-42

The road system has changed.

• The vehicle is driving on slippery road surfaces such as in sand, gravel and/or snow.

• The vehicle is traveling on winding roads.

• The vehicle is on a long straight road.

• The vehicle is approaching a tall building or a large vehicle.

• The surface streets run parallel to a freeway.

• The vehicle has just been transferred by a vehicle carrier or a ferry.

The current position calibration is set incorrectly.

• The vehicle is traveling at high speed.

• The vehicle changes directions more than once, or when the vehicle is turning on a turn table in a parking lot.

• The vehicle is entering and/or exiting a parking lot, garage or a lot with a roof.

• The GPS signal is not received.

• A roof carrier is installed on your vehicle.

• The vehicle is equipped with tire chains.

• The tires are replaced.

• The tire pressure for your tires is incorrect.

• The tires are worn.

The first navigation use after the map data is updated.

• The battery is disconnected for several days.

• The vehicle is driving in heavy traffic where driving is at low speeds, and the vehicle is stopped and started repeatedly.

If you experience problems with your system, you may need to calibrate the system. See “DIC Compass” in the Index of your vehicle’s owner manual.

Problems with Route Guidance

Inappropriate route guidance may occur under one or more of the following conditions:

You have not turned onto the road indicated.

• Route guidance may not be available when using automatic rerouting for the next right or left turn.

• The route may not be changed when using automatic rerouting.

• There is no route guidance when turning at an intersection.

• Plural names of places may be announced occasionally.

• It may take a long time to operate automatic rerouting during high-speed driving.

• Automatic rerouting may display a route returning to the set waypoint if you are heading for a destination without passing through a set waypoint.

• The route prohibits the entry of a vehicle due to a regulation by time or season or any other regulation which may be given.

• Some routes may not be searched.

• The route to the destination may not be shown if there are new roads, if roads have recently changed or if certain roads are not listed in the map data.

See Ordering Map DVDs on page 2-45.

To recalibrate the vehicle’s position on the map, see

“DIC Compass” in the Index of your vehicle’s owner manual.

Ordering Map DVDs

The map data in your vehicle is the most up-to-date information available when your vehicle was produced.

The map data is updated periodically, provided that the map information has changed.

If you have any questions about the operation of the navigation system or the update process, contact the GM Nav Disc Center toll-free phone number,

1-877-NAV-DISC (1-877-628-3472) or go to the center’s website, www.gmnavdisc.com. If you need any updates, call the GM Nav Disc Center or order a new disc online. To order a disc, have your Vehicle

Identification Number (VIN) available. This helps the center make sure you receive the correct and most up-to-date DVD map disc for your vehicle. See “Vehicle

Identification Number (VIN)” in the Index of your vehicle’s owner manual for more information.

After receiving the updated disc, see “Installing the

DVD Map Disc” and “Ejecting the DVD Map Disc” under

Maps on page 2-5.

Database Coverage Explanations

Coverage areas vary with respect to the level of map detail available for any given area. Some areas will feature greater levels of detail than others. If this happens, it does not mean there is a problem with the system. As the map data is updated, more detail may become available for areas which previously

had limited detail. See Ordering Map DVDs on

page 2-45.

Radio Data System (RDS)

The audio system has a Radio Data System (RDS).

RDS features are available for use only on FM stations that broadcast RDS information. With RDS, the radio can do the following:

• Seek to stations broadcasting the selected type of programming

• Receive announcements concerning local and national emergencies

• Display messages from radio stations

This system relies on receiving specific information from these stations and will only work when the information is available. In rare cases, a radio station may broadcast incorrect information that will cause the radio features to work improperly. If this happens, contact the radio station.

The RDS system is always on. When information is broadcast from the FM station you are listening to, the station name or call letters will be displayed on the audio screen. RDS may provide a program type (PTY) for current programming and the name of the program being broadcasted.

MP3 disc. If the guidelines are not met when recording a

CD-R(W), the CD may not play. The guidelines are:

• Sampling rate: 8 kHz, 16 kHz, 22.05 kHz, 24 kHz,

32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, and 48 kHz.

• Bit rates supported: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 80,

96, 112, 128, 144, 160, 192, 224, 256, and 320 kbps.

• ID3 tag information is displayed by the radio if it is available. The radio will display a filename, song name, artist name, album name, and directory name.

• Maximum number of folders is 255 with a maximum hierarchy of eight folders.

• Create a folder structure that makes it easy to find songs while driving. Each folder or album should contain 18 songs or less.

• It is recommended that there is a maximum of

1024 files on a disc.

• The files can be recorded on a CD-R or CD-RW with a maximum capacity of 700 MB.

Root Directory

The root directory will be treated as a folder. If the root directory has compressed audio files, the directory will be displayed as DISC. All files contained directly under the root directory will be accessed prior to any root directory folders. However, playlists will always be accessed before root folders or files.

Empty Directory or Folder

If a root directory or a folder exists somewhere in the file structure that contains only folders/subfolders and no compressed files directly beneath them, the player will advance to the next folder in the file structure that contains compressed audio files and the empty folder will not be displayed or numbered.

No Folder

When the CD contains only compressed files, the files will be located under the root folder. The next and previous folder functions will have no function on a CD that was recorded without folders or playlists. When displaying the name of the folder the radio will display DISC.

When the CD contains only playlists and compressed audio files, but no folders, all files will be located under the root folder. The left and right arrow buttons will search playlists (Px) first and then go to the root folder.

When the radio displays the name of the folder the radio will display DISC.

3-13

Order of Play

Tracks will be played in the following order:

Play will begin from the first track in the first playlist and will continue sequentially through all tracks in each playlist. When the last track of the last playlist has been played, play will continue from the first track of the first playlist.

• If the CD does not contain any playlists, then play will begin from the first track under the root directory. When all tracks from the root directory have been played, play will continue from files according to their numerical listing. After playing the last track from the last folder, play will begin again at the first track of the first folder or root directory.

When play enters a new folder, the display will automatically show the new folder name. The new track name will appear on the display.

File System and Naming

The song name that will display will be the song name that is contained in the file. If the song name is not present in the file, then the radio will display the file name with the extension (such as .mp3) as the track name.

Preprogrammed Playlists

You can access preprogrammed playlists which were created by WinAmp™, MusicMatch™, or Real Jukebox™ software, however, you will not have editing capability.

These playlists will be treated as special folders containing compressed audio song files.

Playing an MP3

With the ignition on, insert an MP3 CD partway into the slot, label side up. The player will pull it in and the

MP3 should begin playing. While playing an MP3, the navigation system is available. If you insert a MP3 with the system off and the ignition on, it will start to play.

When you insert a MP3 CD, the MP3 tab will activate.

If you turn off the ignition or radio with a MP3 CD in the player, it will stay in the player. When you turn on the ignition or radio, the MP3 CD will start playing where it stopped, if it was the last selected audio source.

As each new track starts to play, the track number will appear on the display.

If playing a CD-R the sound quality may be reduced due to CD-R quality, the method of recording, the quality of the music that has been recorded, and the way the

CD-R has been handled. There may be an increase

3-14

in skipping, difficulty in finding tracks, and/or difficulty in loading and ejecting. If these problems occur, check the bottom surface of the CD. If the surface of the CD is damaged, such as cracked, broken, or scratched, the

Background Recording

A CD can be copied and then listened to or a CD can be recording while listening to another source such as AM, FM, HDD, or AUX. The quality of the listening experience should be the same whether recording in the background or not, and the speed of the recording process does not take any longer than normal.

Timeshift cannot be activated during the background recording function.

3-28

Duplicate Content

When record is executed the system checks to see if the CD has already been recorded to the hard drive.

Audio Book

The system is able to play back audio-book content downloaded from www.audible.com

® . This content can be transferred into the system by either burning it to a CD or recording it to a USB storage device.

The audible.com playback requires activation of the vehicle as a player for downloaded content. The radio system activates the audible.com system when information is found on either a CD inserted into the

CD player or if a USB storage device is connected.

Make sure the activation file is copied onto a CD or a

USB storage device so that the downloaded media is supported.

In the process of activation, the Vehicle Identification

Number (VIN) number is required in order to activate your vehicle.

3-29

Auxiliary Devices

The navigation system has an auxiliary input jack located in the center console. This is not an audio output; do not plug the headphone set into the front auxiliary input jack. You can however, connect an external audio device such as an iPod, laptop computer,

MP3 player, CD changer, or cassette tape player, etc.

to the auxiliary input jack for use as another source for audio listening.

Drivers are encouraged to set up any auxiliary device while the vehicle is in PARK (P). See “Defensive Driving” in the Index of your vehicles owner manual for more information on driver distraction.

To use a portable audio player, connect a 3.5 mm

(1/8 inch) cable to the auxiliary input jack. When a device is connected, the system will detect and automatically begin playing audio from the device over the vehicle’s speakers.

If a device is connected and you are listening to another source (FM, CD, MP3, etc.), press the AUDIO key then press the AUDIO key repeatedly until AUX is selected or touch the AUX screen button. An auxiliary device must be connected for the AUX screen button to appear as an option to select or the vehicle must have rear auxiliary jacks.

The screen buttons will be dependent of the type of auxiliary device that you are using.

USB Host Support

The USB connector uses the USB 2.0.

USB Supported Devices

• USB Flash Sticks (Pen Drives)

Portable USB Hard Drives

• CompactFlash (or other portable media) adapters

Depending on the USB mass storage device, some devices may not be recognized. The HUB device is not supported.

USB Playback

Music can be played directly from the USB device and controlled through the radio’s MP3 control functions and the Music Navigator.

3-30

USB Media Recording

A USB Mass Storage device such as a “pen drive” or a portable USB hard drive can be connected to the

USB port to record media contents, such as compressed audio files from the USB storage device onto the HDD.

The USB port is located in the center console bin, between the Accessory Power Outlet (APO) socket and the auxiliary input jack.

In addition to recording the content from the USB storage device, content can be played back directly from the

USB device.

USB Background Recording

If the content of a USB device is chosen to be copied, these media files are copied to the hard drive.

The recording process occurs in the background and does not affect playback from any source, including the USB device itself. The quality of the listening experience should be the same whether recording in the background or not, and the speed of the recording process does not take any longer than normal.

Timeshift cannot be activated during the background recording function.

Using the Radio Controls to Connect and

Control Your iPod

You can control your iPod using the radio buttons and knobs and display your iPod song information on the radio’s display. To connect and control your iPod using the radio controls, your vehicle must have a USB port. If it does, it is located in the center console bin.

You will also need a special iPod connection cable that can be purchased with your vehicle or may be available after, from your dealer/retailer. See your dealer/retailer for more information.

This feature supports the following iPod models:

• Fifth generation or later iPod

• First or Second generation or later iPod Nano*

* For proper operation, make sure your iPod has the latest firmware from Apple ® . Your iPod firmware can be updated using the latest iTunes application.

See www.apple.com/itunes.

3-31

To connect and control your iPod, connect one end of the specially purchased iPod connection cable to the iPod’s dock connector. Connect the other end to both the USB port and the auxiliary input jack. The USB port and the auxiliary input jack are located in the center console bin. If the vehicle is on and the USB connection works, you will see a GM logo appear on your iPod.

Your iPod music will display on your radio’s display and begin playing through your vehicle radio system.

A standard iPod USB cable, like the one that came with your iPod, cannot be used to connect an iPod to your vehicle. You must use the iPod connection cable that was purchased with your vehicle or that was made available from your dealer/retailer in order for this feature to work.

Use the radio Menu/Select knob to bring up the iPod

Menu and select Songs, Artists, Albums, Playlists and Audio books to play from your iPod.

Your iPod will charge while it is connected to your vehicle and if your vehicle is turned to ACC/ACCESSORY or

ON/RUN. It can also be left connected to your vehicle while the vehicle is turned off or removed. With the vehicle turned off, the iPod will automatically be powered off and will not charge or draw power from the vehicle’s battery.

If you have an older iPod model that is not supported or do not have the special iPod connection cable, you can still listen to your iPod in your vehicle by connecting it to the Auxiliary Input Jack using a standard 3.5 mm

(1/8 inch) stereo cable. See “Using the Auxiliary

Input Jack” earlier for more information.

Gracenote Database

When a CDDA is recorded from a CD to the HDD, the music information (Album name, Artist name, Song name and Genre) is retrieved from the Gracenote database, stored in the radio. The database information uses the information of Gracenote Music Recognition

Service. See “Radio(s)” in the owner manual for more information on the Gracenote Database.

Gracenote Music Recognition Service, Music recognition technology, and related data are provided by
