Hands-On Test Report
Hewlett-Packard Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One
Executive Summary
What It Is
During our hands-on testing of Hewlett-Packard’s Officejet 4620 e-Allin-One, we evaluated all aspects of performance, from installation and
set-up, to image quality, productivity, and ease of use:
Tested Print Speed
The Officejet 4620 generally met or exceeded HP’s advertised print and
copy speeds in testing—tested print speeds were up to 8.32 (black)/
5.87 (color) ppm. Copy speeds were fastest using the platen glass, and
actually exceeded HP rated speed using the platen, but were slower
using the automatic document feeder.
Image Quality – Image quality was very good, including photographic
image quality, and was especially remarkable considering this product
segment and the Officejet 4260’s very affordable acquisition price.
In testing, the system produced very good, sharp text quality that was
readable down to 4 pt. font size, good resolution, and good line control,
and very good dot (pixel) control. We were especially impressed with
color photographic quality (with borderless printing up to 8.5”x11”),
with photos displaying very good (vibrant) color saturation, and very
accurate and natural flesh tones, the latter of which is very important
when considering any system with photo-printing capability.
Ultimately, while not on the same level as much more expensive
specialty photo printers with five or more ink colors, we found that
color photographic quality will be more than acceptable for a majority
of all color-photo printing applications.
Image quality in copy mode was also very good, with good text quality
down to even 4 pt. font size, and very good reproduction of our
halftone test target.
We did not observe any image anomalies such as graininess, misregistration, poor fill, broken text, banding, etc.
Installation - Software and wireless network installation was efficient
and streamlined, and took just 23 minutes – the installation wizard
makes software and installation of the system on your wireless network
easy even for novice users. Hardware set up and calibration was also
fast at approximately 18 minutes. There’s a pre-installed permanent
print head, and a minimal amount of packaging materials that had to be
removed and disposed of, which makes setup fast, and is also ecofriendly. HP even includes a USB 2.0 cable, something that’s typically
not included with even more expensive All-in-Ones and printers.
Ease of Use - The touch panel with backlit 2.0” monochrome graphics
display is easy to navigate and text is large and easy to read. This is a
newly designed touch panel with soft keys, and an ATM-like user
interface, so virtually all users will find it familiar. There’s a helpful
Hewlett-Packard Officejet
4620 e-All-in-One
“HP has outdone just about every other manufacturer with
the introduction of the Officejet 4620. How many times can
you remember a product that is the same price as its
predecessor, but is demonstrably superior and more
innovative in virtually every way? The bottom line is that
HP’s Officejet 4260 is a great bargain and emphatically sets
the new benchmark for SOHO MFPs.” - Terry Wirth,
President, Wirth Consulting.

Hewlett-Packard’s Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One is a
full-color ink-jet All-in-One with Wi-Fi 802.11n
connectivity, and replaces the Officejet 4500. Designed
for small offices and workgroups (from one to five
users), the new Officejet 4620 adds several
improvements: four separate ink cartridges (versus one
black cartridge and a tri-color ink cartridge), redesigned control panel, internal power supply (no
external power brick), higher monthly duty cycle
(3,000 pages), and mobile printing (supports AirPrint
and HP’s ePrint), as well as faster print speed (ISO
8.0/7.5 ppm). Also new is access to the rear of the
paper path from the front, and thus no need to access
the back of the unit.

audible click feedback when the user presses a navigation/confirmation key, confirming that they’ve made a selection.
User Software Ease of Use - During our tests, we noted that the Officejet 4620’s software suite is streamlined and less
demanding on PC resources than its predecessors. Software, including print, scan, and fax drivers, is intuitive, non-intrusive
and easy to use, and there is plenty of both off- and on-line guidance.
Printer Assistant software has an intuitive, easy-to-use user interface for performing basic tasks, such as pull scanning from the
PC and scanning, as well as for more advanced tasks, such as configuring system settings and defaults,
Mobile Printing – The Officejet 4620 is strong on mobile printing, with three mobile-printing solutions supported: HP ePrint;
HP’s ePrint Home & Biz application for Android, iOS and Symbian; and Apple AirPrint support for iPad, iPhone and iPod
touch mobile devices, plus Google Cloud Print.
Build Quality and Footprint - We observed good build quality and a smooth overall look and feel. The unit has a small
footprint (just over 1 cubic foot), and a low 8” high profile, so it’ll be an easy fit into most workspaces.
Maintenance - Replacing the four separate ink cartridges is easy—just open the top scanner unit, press the retaining clip on
the old cartridge to pop it out, and slide in the new cartridge. The system has also been re-designed so that, once it’s been set
up, there’s no longer any need to access the back of the unit.
Reliability - During our evaluation, we did not observe any reliability, installation, or usage problems—no paper-curling or
ink smudging was observed, installing ink cartridges was clean and easy, printed output was neatly stacked, functions worked
correctly the first time, no misfeeds or double-feeding occurred, etc.
Recommendation – Throughout testing, the Officejet 4260 performed faultlessly, with no misfeeding or image-quality
problems observed, software worked correctly the first time and throughout, and hardware, software and wireless installation
setup is uncomplicated. In short, it didn’t try our patience at any point, but performed like a champ throughout. Cost per page
at 4.1¢ (black)/11.37¢ (color) is reasonable for this segment, as well as for sub-$500 color ink-jet and laser All-in-Ones. The
system has also been re-designed from the ground up, with new compact footprint and a reduction in height (it’s not much
larger or taller than a standalone printer), new print engine, four separate ink cartridges that are very easy to access, and
impressive text and photo quality, and it provides wireless connectivity and strong mobile printing solutions, both of which
aren’t always provided in this segment – all at the same price point as its predecessor. It’ll be especially appealing to users
who require easy mobile printing (and it doesn’t get any easier than ePrint for just e-mailing your job to the printer). Overall,
it offers a lot of bang for the buck at a very affordable acquisition price ($99.99). For SOHO use and micro offices with light
print volumes, the Officejet 4620 will be a great performer with a very attractive price and feature set, and is an Outstanding
choice.

 Very good image quality in both print and copy
modes, and we were especially impressed with color
photographic quality, especially for a product in this
segment. The system was also able to produce the
black, cyan, magenta, and yellow halftone
gradations in our test target very well.
 Black text was sharp and clear, with text readability
down to 4 pt. font size. Output also displayed good
resolution and fine-line reproduction, as well as
very good dot (pixel) control.
 Photos displayed good detail, excellent color

Very good overall copy quality, with good text
quality down to even 4 pt. font size.
No image anomalies such as mis-registration,
graininess poor fill, broken text, banding, etc. were
observed.
No ink bleed-through or smearing was observed.
LIMITATIONS

Like other ink-jet printers that utilize dye-based
inks, we observed running of color inks in our water
fastness test. Note however that the black ink is
pigment-based and showed no running or smearing
when exposed to water and a highlighter pen. Also
note that black-ink permanence is especially critical
as nobody wants the delivery address on an
envelope or shipping label obliterated by
inadvertent exposure to water during the delivery
process.
PRINT-MODE IMAGE QUALITY SAMPLES (RAW TIFF DIGITAL PHOTOS)
Image-quality originals used by Wirth Consulting when evaluating a device’s image quality.
Raw TIFF photo of the test target printed on HP Bright White Paper
(plain paper). Overall the photo has an attractive appearance, and
colors are true—for instance, the musician’s dress is a burgundy
shade, as it should be, and flesh tones are smooth and natural.
Raw TIFF photo of the test target printed on HP Advanced Photo
Paper. While our plain-paper sample is good, colors are much more
vibrant and vivid printed on HP glossy photo paper. Colors are very
accurate, and flesh tones are excellent - very accurate, smooth and
natural, especially when viewing the actual printed sample. Fine
detail is very good, as for instance, on the left, fine strands of hair
are visible.

Hewlett-Packard Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One
When printing the test target that evaluates resolution, the Officejet
4620 was able to produce black horizontal and vertical lines
(outlined in red) as thin as 3 pt. size, which is typical of officeimaging printers and MFPs. It also produced cyan, magenta and
yellow down to 3 pt. size, which is good.
In this test target, the Officejet 4620 was able to produce positive
horizontal and vertical lines down to 1 pt., which is very good, and
negative horizontal and vertical lines down to 1 to 2 pt., which is
good. In the Dot (Pixel) Quality measurement, we see overall very
good ability to fill the pixel boxes correctly: the system produced
approximately 90% of pixels correctly in the 2x2 positive and
negative black pixel box; and 90% and 80% of pixels in the 1x1
black positive and negative pixel boxes respectively. It produced
90% of the pixels in the cyan and magenta pixel boxes, and 80% of
pixels in the yellow pixel box, which is very good.
COPY-MODE IMAGE QUALITY
In the copy image-quality sample to the left
taken in color Best mode, the system was able to
accurately produce the halftone scale to the far
left in increments of 10% to 100% well.
Reproduction of text was very good, with
distinct, readable text down to 4 pt. font size (and
down to 2 pt. font size under magnification). The
handwriting samples reproduced in different
colors were also distinct and easily readable, and
the Copier Test Pattern was also correctly
reproduced. Although not quite as apparent in
the photo sample to the left, but apparent in the
actual printed copy itself, the system was able to
produce readable black text in the dark red box
in the upper left—something we’ve observed
some more expensive systems have not been
able to do as well. In the line pairs per millimeter
chart in the lower right, the system was able to
clearly reproduce lines as fine as 5.6 lp/mm,
which is very good.

564XL Yellow
564XL Magenta
STRENGTHS
 Competitive black and color cost per page using HP
564XL high-yield cartridges of 4.18¢ and 11.37¢
respectively. While this is not the lowest ink-jet
color per page, it’s still competitive and is lower
than that of many other color ink-jet All-in-Ones in
this class, as well as lower than that of more
expensive color laser-based All-in-Ones, some of
which have color cost per page as high as from 14¢
to 20¢. Among a sampling of color laser and ink-jet
All-in-Ones in this segment, black cost per page
ranges from approximately 3¢ to 6¢, while color
cost per page ranges from 10¢ to 22¢.
 Four individual ink cartridges means that users
need only replace the ink cartridge that is depleted,
avoiding waste.
 Free next business-day shipping of ink cartridges
purchased at HP.com; you can also compare prices
from other online retailers at HP’s Web store.
LIMITATIONS

None.
SPACE/POWER CONSUMPTION/WARRANTY
STRENGTHS
 Maximum power consumption at 15.1 watts is significantly lower than
color laser All-in-Ones in this class—for laser All-in-Ones, power
consumption typically averages between 300 and 500 watts.
 The Officejet 4620 has been designed so that only access to the front and
top is required—that means there’s no need to have to access the back of
the unit (for instance, to access the back of the paper path). There’s also
an integrated power supply, so there’s no power brick to contend with.
 Standard one-year warranty and one-year technical phone support.
Customers may upgrade to the optional Total One Package, which
provides two additional years of protection, and HP’s pick-up and return
product program.
 EPA Energy Star compliant.
LIMITATIONS
 None.

ECO-FRIENDLY FEATURES
Hewlett-Packard Environmental Statement
STRENGTHS
 Energy Star-qualification means the system meets
U.S. EPA power-conservation standards for low
power consumption in power-save standby mode.
 Eco-friendly, minimal packaging for ink cartridges—
up to 70-percent less compared to laser toner and/or
imaging-unit packaging.
 Schedule when the system should turn on and off—
for instance, at 9 a.m. when work hours begin, and
off at 6 p.m. when work hours end (specify via the
Setup menu via the touch panel, or via the Embedded
Web Server).
 Save energy by scheduling when the system should
revert into energy-saving sleep mode—after 5, 10, or
15 minutes (specify via the Setup menu via the touch
panel, or via the Embedded Web Serve2r).
 Eco-friendly, minimal packaging for ink cartridges—
up to 70-percent less compared to laser toner and/or
imaging-unit packaging.
 In print mode, the Officejet 4620 consumes just 15.1
watts of power, while color laser All-in-Ones in this
class consume from approximately 300 to 500 watts.
Customers will not only pay for less energy
consumption, but will contribute less to carbon
emissions.
 HP provides an ink-cartridge recycling program,
Planet Partners, which is available in 42 countries
and territories around the world. HP will not refill,
resell, or send cartridges to landfills, but will instead
recycle them. The company will also recycle used HP
printers and other HP imaging equipment via its HP
Consumer Buyback and Planet Partners Recycling
Program. With this program, customers can avoid
contributing to landfills, as HP will provide prepaid
shipping for the return of the products for recycling.
2011 Environmental Goals
 Product use: HP will reduce the energy consumption of HP products and associated
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 40% below 2005 levels by the end of 2011. This
replaces the 2010 goal to reduce combined energy consumption and associated GHG
emissions of HP operations and products to 25% below 2005 levels by 2010, which HP has
already met.
Progress: Achieved nine months ahead of schedule and exceeded by 10 percentage
points.
Representative product categories have their own goals, including the following goals
for HP's high-volume printer, and desktop and notebook PC families:
o By 2011, HP will improve the overall energy efficiency of HP ink and laser
printing products by 40 percent, relative to 2005.
Progress: HP exceeded this goal and improved the energy efficiency of HP
ink and laser printing products by 46%, relative to 2005.
o By 2011, HP will save customers 1 billion kWh of electricity through a variety of
product design strategies in HP's high-volume HP desktop and notebook PC
families, relative to 2008.
Progress: HP exceeded this goal and saved customers 1.4 billion kWh
through 2010.
 Recycled plastic: Use a total of 100 million pounds, cumulatively from 2007, of recycled
plastic in HP printing products.
 RoHS: Apply the European Union (EU) Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) 2
substance and exemption requirements voluntarily outside the EU (and European Free Trade
Association) on a worldwide basis within six months of each of the EU's various legal
compliance dates for virtually all HP branded products in the scope of EU RoHS 2, except
where it is widely recognized that there is no technically feasible alternative (as indicated by
an exemption under the EU RoHS Directive).
Progress: Achieved for 2010.
 Packaging:
For inkjet supplies:
o Achieve 35% minimum recycled content for corrugate, globally.
LIMITATIONS
o Achieve 80% minimum recycled content for paperboard, globally.
 None.
For desktop and notebook PC products:
o Reduce the ratio of total packaging weight to total packaged product weight to 28%.
o Achieve 35% minimum recycled content for corrugate, globally.
 Paper: 40 percent or more of HP-branded paper sold will be Forest Stewardship Council-certified or have more than 30 percent post-consumer waste content by
the end of 2011.
Progress: We are on track to meet this target. In 2010, 14% of the HP-branded paper we used or sold achieved these criteria—more than five times the amount in
2008.
 Materials: As technologically feasible alternatives become readily available that will not compromise product performance or quality and will not adversely
impact health or the environment, we will complete the phase out of BFR and PVC in newly introduced personal computing products.
Progress: HP is on track to achieve 90% of its goal to phase out BFR and PVC in newly introduced personal computing products in 2011, subject to ready
availability of technologically feasible alternatives for all components. At the end of 2010, 100% of all new notebook products and many other newly introduced
personal computing products are BFR- and PVC-free. HP intends to complete our goal to phase out BFR and PVC where technically feasible in the few
remaining new desktop and monitor PC products as market demand and customer expectations permit.
2012 Environmental Goals

Materials: Complete the phase-out of bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) in newly introduced personal
computing products by the end of 2012.
Progress: Due to the complexity of our supply chain, we will not be able to reach our original goal to phase out these substances from all HP products by the end
of 2012. HP believes we will be able to complete the phase-out of these substances in newly introduced personal computing products by the end of 2012. We have
updated the goal accordingly.

Renewable energy: Double voluntary purchases of renewable energy to 8% of electricity use (in addition to the renewable energy available by default in the power
grid).”
