The following criteria will help you choose the right binocular.
1. Place of use
The above mentioned division is the first step for making the right
choice. With selected optical characteristics STEINER binoculars can be
optimised in such a way that you will get optimum viewing performance
under the predominant conditions of light, colour and reflection at the main
place of use. The binocular construction has to be optimised for the
mechanical demands of each environment. Choose for example one of
our professional-line binoculars like the WILDLIFE 7x50, if you want
a binocular which is absolutely water pressure proof and resistant to
extreme temperatures.
2. Light conditions respectively time of use
It is important to note that twilight factor and luminosity are not
defining features, but only mathematical values which are equal for any
binocular of the same magnification and objective diameter. Only the
combination of the glass quality, the glass treatment, the construction and
the optics determine the picture quality.
For daylight use a binocular with an objective diameter from 22- 40 mm
is absolutely sufficient. Combined with a magnification of 7-10 times
these binoculars are the perfect combination of visual performance and
weight. If you use your binoculars during your holidays or while climbing
mainly in daylight, then STEINER's NAVIGATOR 8x30 or STEINER's
SAFARI 12x40 are the perfect choice.
At dawn, under difficult light conditions or in darkness as well as for any
multi-purpose use we recommend an objective diameter from 50-56 mm
combined with magnifications from 7-10 times. Under these circumstances
mainly the optical performance counts. STEINER's NIGHTHUNTER 8x56 or
STEINER's NIGHTHUNTER 7x50 will render you excellent service.

3. Expectations and Comfort
If you use your binocular every day, at work or expose it to extreme
conditions, then you should try to get the best product available. The
professional product ranges ADMIRAL, COMMANDER, WILDLIFE and
NIGHTHUNTER stand out due to the well-known STEINER qualities and the
special coatings. But even with our standard product range you will find
features which will meet any sophisticated demand.
4. Magnification
How do you distinguish between all the different combinations of
magnification and objective diameter – from 8 x22 to 20 x 80.
The first number is the magnification, being the degree to which the object
you look at comes closer. The second number is the objective lens diameter
in millimetres. On board a ship a 7-times magnification, 8 -times
magnification at the maximum, is recommended, because any larger
magnification makes the effects of vibrations caused by the users hands
more visible and thus blurs the pictures. Added to which, the wider field
of view offered by 7x or 8x magnification offers more chance of finding
a target from the moving deck of a vessel than higher magnifications do,
without the necessity to repeatedly scan the area. For universal on-shore
use an 8 to 12-times magnification is most suitable. With higher magnification models (15x80, 20x80), you will need a tripod.
