KorgKronosWorkflowforWorship
IhavebeenplayingKorgkeyboardssincetheOASYSin2005.Korghasgraciouslycarriedover
mostoftheworkflowtotheircurrentproduct–theKorgKronos.Thiskeyboardissingularly
powerfulandisagreatfitforcontemporaryworshipduetoitsincrediblebreadthofsounds
includedwiththekeyboard,andtheeaseoflayeringmultiplesoundstogether.Thisarticlewill
describethebasicworkflowofthekeyboardandtheapproachItakeforusingitinaworship
application.
TheBasics
TheKronoshasseveralmainoperatingmodes,selectedbythebuttonsrightofthescreen.The
mainmodesareSetList,Program,Combi,andSequence.
Program–Thisisthesinglesoundmodeofthekeyboard,usedforauditioningsoundsinthe
keyboardandforcreatingnewsounds.
Combi–ThismodeisthemainperformancemodeoftheKronoswheremultiplesoundscanbe
combinedandlayeredorsplitacrossthekeyboard.
SetList–SetListmodeallowsyoutoordercombisorprogramssotheycanbeeasilyrecalledin
orderforaset.Youcanaddnotesforeachsetlistitemforlyriccuesornotesaboutthesounds.
WorkflowOverview
ThebasicKronosworkflowis:
1. Createacombiwiththebasicsettingsandpreferenceswhichyouwilluseasatemplate
forfuturecombis(onetimetaskonly)
2. Copyyourtemplatecombitoafreecombilocation
3. ChooseProgramsinProgrammodeandnotethebankandprogramnumbers
4. Usethe“CopyfromProgram”functionintheupperrightdropdownmenuofCombi
modetocopyyourprogram(s)intoslotsintoyourcombi
5. Adjustcombisettings–pitch,layer/splitpoints,effects
6. VERYIMPORTANT–Adjusttimbrevolumelevels
7. Savethecombi
8. Optional-CreateaSetListentryforthecombi
Theseitemswillbediscussedinmoredetailbelow.
Initialsetup–GlobalSettings
TheKronosisveryflexible,andcanbeusedinmanysituations–bothforliveperformanceand
forrecordingworkflows.Thereareafewglobalsettingsthatarehelpfulforliveuse.

Basic->Basic->Knob/SliderMode–settoCatch.Thismeansthesliderswillnotbegin
controllingthetimbreleveluntiltheyarephysicallymovedtomatchthevirtuallevel.
Thispreventssuddenvolumesurprisesthatcanhappenin“Jump”mode.
Basic->Basic->MuteModeSetthistoLive.Thismeansthatmutedcombichannels
don’tusepolyphony.

Controllers/Scales->Controllers->FootPedalBehaviorSetthistoReset.Thiswill
causethefootpedal(thevolumepedalifyouhaveone)toresettothesavedvalueof
yoursound,ratherthanremainingwhereitwasonthelastsound.Thisisanimportant
settingifyouusethefootpedalforcontrollingvolumeofasound–commonlydone
withorgansounds.
Besuretosaveyourglobalsettingschanges.
InitialSetup–TemplateCombi
Ihavefounditextremelyhelpfultohaveacombisetupwithbasicsounds,settings,and
routingsthatcanbeusedasastartingpointfornewcombis.It’sworthspendingafairbitof
timegettingthisright,asyouwillmakemanycopies.Thisiscriticallyimportant,butcanbea
bitarduous.Iwilldescribetheprocessofcreatingmytemplatecombiinafuturearticle.You
canchoosetofollowthatarticletocreateyourowntemplatecombi,oryoucanstartwithmy
PCGfilewhichcontainsthetemplatecombiIcreated.
SoundOrder
Thefirstdecisionyouwillneedtomakewhetheryoumakeyourowncombiorusemineishow
toorderyoursoundsinyourcombi.Therearetwoprimaryoptions–eitherorderingyour
soundsinorderofimportanceputtingthedominantsoundontimbreone,thenextontimbre
two,etc.,orbyorderingyoursoundsbycategory–i.e.pianoalwaysgoesontimbre1,
pads/stringsontimbres2-3,leadsoundson4,etc.
Ihaveadoptedthecategorymethod,asIfinditeasiertokeeptrackofsoundsifIknowtheyare
alwaysinthesameorder,evenifthatmeansonsomesongsI’monlyusinghigher-numbered
timbres.
Thisismylayout:

ItisimportanttonotethatnoteverycombiIcreatehasallofthesethingsinthem–thatwould
createsignificantpolyphony(howmanynotescanbeplayedatatime)andeffectslot
problems.Rather,everycombiIcreatefollowsthispattern.Forexample,ifIneedacombi
withanelectricpianoandapad,Iwilluseonlytimbre2forthepadandtimbre4forthe
electricpiano.
Mybasictemplatecombihasonlypianoontimbre1andclicktrackontimbre16.Ialsohavea
templatecombithatcontainstwopadsoundsandaHammondOrgansound.
ClickTrack
TheKronos’drumtrackfunctionisextremelyusefulasabasicclicktrack.Onceitisconfigured
inthetemplatecombiitisveryeasytouse–enterthetempoyoudesireintothecombi,then
presstheDrumTrackbuttontostarttheclickrunning.PressDrumTrackagaintostoptheclick.
Ihaveconfiguredtheclicktracktooperateontimbre16andbeoutputtotheOutput1jack.
Effects
TheKronoshasseveralkindsofeffects–MFX,TFX,andIFX.MFXaremastereffectsthatcanbe
usedlikeeffectsonasoundboard–therearetwoMFXchannels,andeachcombitimbrehasa
levelcontroltoeachofthesetwoMFXchannels.TFX(totaleffects)arealwaysoninthechain
andaffecttheentirecombioutput.Idon’ttypicallyusethese.IFX(inserteffects)arethe
primarysourceofeffectsforindividualprogramsinthecombi.
IFX
IFXsettingsgetpopulatedwhenadditionalprogramsarecopiedintothecombi.
MFX
IhavesetmineupasMFX1reverbandMFX2Delay.TheinputlevelcontrolstotheseMFXare
foundontheIFX->InsertFXpage.NotethatyouneedtogototheIFX->Routingpagetosee
whereeachtimbremapstotheIFXinusesoyouknowwhichlevelyouneedtoedit.
ChoosingPrograms
Nowthatwehaveatemplatecombi,wecanchoosesoundsforit.Thisstepisbothfunand
frustrating.Itisfuntodialthroughallthesoundsthatcomeintheboard,butitcanalsobe
frustratingthattherearesomanysoundsthatcomestockintheboard,andfindingwhatyou
needcantakeawhile.Rememberingthesoundsyoulikecanbedifficultaswell.Fortunately,
theKronoshasacoupletoolstohelpwiththis.
Forthissection,makesureyouareinProgrammode.
Categoryselection
Theeasiestwaytostartauditioningsoundsistoturnthewheelandstartplaying;however,the
Kronos’soundlistismassiveandit’snotorderedinaparticularlystructuredway.Category
modeismucheasiertouse.Toselectsoundsbycategory,clicktheCategoryfieldatthetopof
thescreen.Theleftlistcontainsthemainsoundcategoriesandtherightlistsubcategories.
Therearestillmanysoundstoauditionandsometimessounds–particularlysynthsounds–
maybedescribedbymorethanonecategory,butthisnarrowsthefieldconsiderably.
SoundAddressing
Onceyoufindasoundyoulike,youneedtonoteitsbankandprogramnumber.TheKronosis
organizedintobanks–Int-A,User-B,etc.,andthenprogramnumbers0-127.Bothbankand
programnumberarerequiredtorecallthecorrectsound.Forexample(inthedefaultKronos2
soundset),KRONOSGermanGrandisInt-C:000.
Favorites
Onceyouhavefoundsomesoundsyoulike,TheKronoshasanadditionaltooltoflagthemfor
easierrecall–settingtheFavoriteflag.Toflagasoundasafavorite,clickthedrop-downmenu
intheupperrightofthescreenandselectFavorite,thensavethesound(upperrightdropdownmenu->Save).
Afteryouhavesavedanumberofsoundswiththefavoriteflag,youcanfilteronthesewhen
yousearchfornewsoundsbycheckingtheFavoriteboxineithertheprogramselector
categoryselectwindows.
Creatinganewcombifromyourtemplatecombi
SwitchbacktoCombimodeifyouhaven’talreadydoneso.
It’sagoodhabittoalwayscopyyourtemplatecombiintoanewcombislotbeforeyoustart
makingchangessoyoudon’taccidentallychangeyourtemplate.
Tocopyyourtemplatecombi,selectyourtemplatecombi,clicktheupperrightdrop-down
menu,andchooseSave.Changethecombislottoafreelocationandnamethenewcombi.
PressOK.
Anoteoncombinaming–Mycombisarenamedeitherdescriptivelyforwhattheyare,oras
thenameofthesong.Somecombisareveryspecifictoaparticularsong,andfortheseit’san
obviouschoicetonamethecombiafterthesong.Othercombisaremoregeneric–apiano
withacouplepadsthatImayuseonseveralsongs.ThosegenericcombisImayname
somethinglike“Pianowithbrasspad”.SinceInearlyalwaysplaywithaclicktrack,generic
combistendtobecomesubtemplates,andIwillusuallymakeacopyofthatgenericcombi,set
thetempoforthesong,andthensaveitasthenameofthesongjusttocapturethetempo.If
youaren’tgoingtobeusingtheclicktrackfunction,youmaybeabletousethegenericcombi
model.
CopytheProgramsintoyournewcombi
Makesureyouareeditingthenewcombiandnotyourtemplate!!
Presstheupperrightdrop-downmenuandselectCopyfromProgram.
Thescreenthatappearshasseveralimportantsettings.
TheProgramNamefieldiswhereyouselecttheprogramyouwanttoimport.TheTimbrefield
iswhichtimbretheprogramwillbeimportedinto.Theothersettingsrelatetohowthe
program’seffectswillbehandled.InearlyalwaysusetheIFXAllUsedsettingwhichimports
onlytheinserteffectsusedbytheprogram.Youprobablydon’twanttoselectMFXorTFX,as
thesewilloverwritetheeffectssettingfortheentirecombi.
Afterchoosingyourprogram,selectingthedestinationtimbrenumber,andselectingthe
effectsyouwanttoimport,clickOK.
Testouttheimportedprogram,makingsureitsoundsthesameasitdidinprogrammode,and
thatitrespondstothecorrecttimbreslider.Ifeverythingchecksout,saveyourcombi,and
repeattheCopyFromProgramprocessforanyadditionalsoundsyouwanttoimport.Ifthere
isaproblem,eitherreverttoyoursavedcombiandtrytheimportagain,orcheckoutthe
Troubleshootingsectionattheendofthearticle.
Note–ifyouareusingmytemplatecombi,soundswillprobablyhaveadelayassigned.Seethe
sectionbelowforhowtoturnthatoff.
AdjustCombiSettings
Programsgetimportedintothecombiforthemostpartastheyare.Sometimesthingsneedto
beadjusted.Hereareafewcommonadjustments:
Split/LayerpointsandPitch
Whenprogramsareimported,theycoverthewholekeyrange.Thisissometimesdesirable–
i.e.youmaywanttolayerapadsoundwithapiano,andissometimesnotdesirable.Tochange
thekeyrangeofatimbre,gototheMIDIFilter/Zones->Kbd/VelZonesscreen.Hereyoucan
choosethetopandbottomkeyforeachtimbre.
Youmayalsowanttochangethepitchofatimbre,forexampleifalayeredpadisplayinginthe
wrongoctave.Tochangethepitchofatimbre,gototheTimbreParameter->Pitch/Delay
screenandadjusttheTransposesettingforthetimbreinquestion.
Tomakeanoctaveadjustment,changethevalueto+12togoupanoctaveor-12togodown
anoctave.
Effects
Youmaywanttoadjusttheinsertormastereffectsforyourtimbres.Thisisparticularlytrue
fordelay–frequentlyprogramsaresetwiththeMFXsendsallthewayup.Ifyouhavedelay
setupinyourtemplatecombi,thiswillcauseyourprogramtohavedelayinthecombi,evenifit
didn’thavedelaywhenitwasaprogram.
TheKronos’effectssystemisverypowerfulandmostofthetimetheIFXnumberswillnot
correspondtothetimbrenumbers,eitherbecausesomeprogramsusenoIFX,orbecausesome
programsusemorethanoneIFX.Becauseofthisweneedtochecktheeffectsmappingtosee
howtheeffectsarewired.GototheIFX->Routingpageandyoucanseehoweachtimbreis
wiredup.
Onceyouknowwhichsettingsyouneedtochange,gototheIFX–InsertFXpagetomakebasic
changes.
TheMFXsendscomefromthelastIFXforthetimbre.Toturnofftheundesirabledelayfora
program,turndowneithertheSend1orSend2knob(mytemplatecombihasdelayseton
Send1).
AdjustingTimbreVolume,akaNormalizingyoursounds
Anextremelycriticalstepistolevelyoursoundssoyouaresendingthesoundperson
consistentandusablelevels,soheorshedoesn’thavetochaseyouaroundeverytimeyou
switchsounds.Icannotemphasizeenoughhowimportantthisstepis.
Themainsliderscancontroltimbrevolume,ofcourse,butitisdifficulttoreturntoapreset
volumeonceyoumakeachange.Also,somesoundsmaybewaytooloudfortheirfunctionin
thecombi-theslidermaybebarelyabovezero,makingitdifficulttohavefinecontroloverthe
partlevel.Thereisanothercontrolthathelpsgetthevolumeintheballpark–InputTrim.
GototheEQ/VectorControl->TimbreEQpage.Therowofnumbersbelowthebypassbutton
istheinputtrimvolumecontrol.Thisrangeis0-99.Loudsoundscanbetamedhere,making
themeasiertocontrolwiththefaders.
Theprimarygoalofnormalizingistosendpredictableandevenlevelsofallyourpartstothe
soundsystem.Mostofthetimethebeststartingpointistoleavetheslidersallthewayupand
usetheInputTrimcontrolstoadjusteachpartlevelforthecorrectbalance.
Balance
Notethatbalancedoesn’tnecessarilymeaneachparthasthesameperceivedvolume;rather
thateachpartisthelevelitshouldbefortheroleinthesong.Forexample,usuallypiano
soundsaredominant,whilepadsarequieter.Inthiscase,youwouldadjusttheInputTrim
levelssothepadsaresomewhatquieterthanthepianosound.
Workwithyoursoundpersonandaskhimorherhowyou’redoingwithyourparts.Thesound
personcanhearthewholebandandcangivemuchmoreobjectiveinformationthanwhatis
apparentwhileatthekeyboard.Ihaveobservedthatmostkeyboardplayersoverestimatethe
dynamicsneeded–loudpartsareplayedtooloudly,andquietpartsareplayedtooquietly.
Savethecombi!!
Remembertosaveyourcombifrequently.We’vecoveredbasicsaving(upperrightdrop-down
menu->SaveCombi),butthisonlysavesthecombiintotherunningmemoryofthekeyboard.
Thismemorydoespersistwhenyoupowerdownthekeyboard(NOTE–waitatleast10
secondsaftermakingachangebeforepoweringdownthekeyboardtoensureyourchangeis
savedtorunningmemory),butitisagoodideatoperiodicallysavetheentirekeyboard’s
memorytodisk,andideallyalsotoaUSBdrive.
ThesefunctionsareinDiskmode(rightofthescreen).Tosavetherunningmemorytodisk,
selecttheupperrightdrop-downmenuandchooseSavePCG.Makesureallitemsare
checked,andnamethefile.
Tosavetoadifferentdrivethantheinternaldrive,insertaUSBdriveinthekeyboard,waita
fewseconds,thendropthedriveselectionatthebottomofthescreendownandchoosethe
othermenuchoice(namewillvary).Presstheupperrightdrop-downmenuandchooseSave
PCG.Makesureallitemsarechecked,andnamethefile.
SetlistMode
Setlistmodeisaconvenientwaytoorganizecombissotheycanberecalledinorderduringa
performance.Setlistitemsarepointerstocombisorprograms–theyarenotsounds
themselves,soifyouupdateacombiorprogram,thatupdatedcombiwillbereflectedinyour
setlistobject.Setlistobjectsalsocanbetitledsomethingdifferentthantheprogramorcombi
name,andhaveanotessection.
Important:Aftermakingyoursetlistchanges,remembertosaveyoursetlist!Gototheupper
rightdrop-downmenuandsavethesetlist.Ifyoudonotsaveyoursetlist,yourchangeswillbe
lostwhenyoupoweroffthekeyboard.
EnterSetlistmodebypressingtheSetlistbuttonimmediatelyrightofthescreen.
PresstheEdittabatthebottomofthescreentoentereditmode.
Selecttheslottype–combiorprogram,thenselecttheprogramorcombinumber.Giveyour
setlistslotaname.SelecttheCommenttabandenteracommentifyou’dlike–songkey,
roadmap,afewhardtorememberlyrics,etc.
Toduplicateasetlistslot,selecttheslottobecopied,presscopy,gotothedestinationslotand
presspaste.Toinsertanewsetlistitem,firstselectthesourcesetlistitemandpresscopy,then
selectthesetlistitemAFTERwhereyouwouldlikethenewsetlistitemandpressInsert.
Aftermakingyoursetlistchanges,remembertosaveyoursetlist!Gototheupperrightdropdownmenuandsavethesetlist.
Notes:
- Makesureyousaveyoursetlist!!Gototheupperrightdrop-downmenuandsavethe
setlist.
- Commentsaresavedaspartofthesetlistentry,notthecombiorprogramobject.
- Ilikemakingamasteralphabeticallistofsongsinthecatalogstartingatthebeginning
ofthesetlistfile,andthencopyingsetlistentriesfromthemasterlisttofreeslotslater
inthesetlistfortheactualset.Forexample,slots1-30arefilledwithsongsinthe
repertoire,completewithcomments.Thefirstsongofasetwouldstartatthenext
emptypageafterthemasterlist–inthiscase,number32.Icopythesecondsongfrom
themasterlisttoslot33,etc.ThiswayIamneverworkingoutofthe“master”setlist
objects,butratheracopyofthemlaterinthefile.
Color-codingsetlistobjectsisveryhelpful.Forexample,thefirstsongofasetisred,the
lastsongofthesetorlastsongbeforeabreakblue.
Ifyoueditaprogramorcombithatisreferencedinasetlist,yourchangesincombior
programmodewillbereflectedinsetlistmode–youwillbeworkingfromyourlatest
copy.
Ifyoueditaprogramorcombiobjectreferencedinsetlistmodebutthensaveittoa
differentcombiorprogrambankorslot,setlistmodewillNOTbeupdated–thesetlist
slotwillcontinuetopointtotheoriginalcombiorprogramslot.
