AIS Connection Guide (RS-232)
Thank You
Thank you for choosing Humminbird®, the #1 name in fishfinders. Humminbird® has built its reputation by
designing and manufacturing top-quality, thoroughly reliable marine equipment.
Overview
Use this guide to connect an Automatic Identification System (with an RS-232 hardware interface) to your
Humminbird® Fishing System’s port (NMEA 0183 sentences over RS-232). We encourage you to read this guide
completely so that you may understand the connection requirements.
The connection is determined by the cable connector on the AIS data cable you have purchased.
• If the AIS data cable has a DE-9 connector, see DE-9 Connection and Baud Rate.
• If the AIS data cable has connection wires, see Pigtail Connection and Baud Rate.
DE-9 Connection
If the AIS equipment includes a data cable with a DE-9 connector, use the instructions in this section.
Connecting the DE-9 to the Null Modem
Required Supplies (not included): Humminbird® PC Connect Cable (AS-PC2), AIS data cable with a DE-9 connector,
and a null modem adapter.
AS-PC2 DE-9 Connector
1. Turn off the power for the Humminbird® control head and the AIS.
2. 700 Series™ HD: Insert the AS-PC2 cable’s NMEA-COM connector into the COM connector on the
Connector Holder. See the Connector Holder illustration on the next page.
800, 900, and 1100 Series™: Insert the AS-PC2 cable’s NMEA-COM connector into the dual RS-232 port
on the back of the Humminbird® control head. See the Rear View illustrations on the next page.

6. See your AIS installation guide to connect power to the AIS equipment and finish the installation.
Pigtail Connection
If the AIS equipment includes a data cable with a pigtail, use the instructions in this section.
Required Supplies (not included): Humminbird® AS-HHGPS Cable, AIS data cable with pigtail.
1. Turn off the power for the Humminbird® control head and the AIS.
2. Use your AIS installation guide to locate the transmit, receive, and ground wires on the AIS data cable.
3. Connect the AS-HHGPS wires to the AIS data cable wires as shown in the Wiring Information chart.
Tape or apply heat-shrink insulation to each connection to prevent shorting the wiring.

Baud Rate
The 800, 900, and 1100 Series™ control heads have the following baud rates available: 4800, 9600, and 38400. If you
have a 700 Series™ HD control head, it is important to confirm that the control head and AIS are communicating at
the same baud rate.
NOTE: The following instructions do not apply to the 800, 900, and 1100 Series™ control heads.
700 Series™ HD Baud Rate Set Up
There are two options to configure the 700 Series™ HD control head and the AIS so that they communicate at the
same baud rate, as follows:
• If NMEA 0183 Output is turned on for the 700 Series™ HD Fishing System operation, the control
head is operating exclusively at a baud rate of 4800. To check the setting, press the MENU key twice to
open the Main Menu. Select Setup tab > NMEA 0183 Output. Then, refer to your AIS installation guide
to set the AIS baud rate to 4800.
• If NMEA 0183 Output is not required for the 700 Series™ HD Fishing System operation, turn off
NMEA 0183 Output. Press the MENU key twice to open the Main Menu. Select Setup tab >
NMEA 0183 Output > Off.
NOTE: If NMEA 0183 Output is off, baud rates 4800, 9600, and 38400 are available on the 700 Series™
HD Fishing System.
NOTE: The menu in your Fishing System will be called NMEA 0183 Output or NMEA Output. If the
menu option is not shown under the Setup tab, make sure the User Mode is set to Advanced (Setup tab >
User Mode > Advanced).
