SAFOX X delivers incomparable

and with fast-moving subjects
The next-generation SAFOX X AF module was newly
developed for the K-5 II. This module incorporates a
high-sensitivity AF sensor that performs brilliantly in
low-light conditions. It also incorporates a diffractive lens
to greatly improve focusing accuracy while effectively
minimizing chromatic aberration generated within the
module. It also features a light-source sensor to minimize
focusing errors, particularly with artificial light sources.

Dependable AF operation at super-low
brightness levels of -3 EV to set focus on
poorly illuminated subjects
A newly developed, high-sensitivity AF sensor assures
dependable autofocus operation down to a minimum luminance
of –3 EV (when using nine middle sensor points). When shooting
in moonlight, for instance, the sensor prevents the AF mechanism
from slowing down or being confused by high-illumination spots
in the image field. It also captures low-contrast subjects in great

When the AF mode is set to continuous (AF. C), the K-5 II
automatically tracks the subject, even when it moves away from
a pre-selected AF point, by assessing the distance data collected
by neighboring focus sensors. This function assures stable AF
operation with subjects that are otherwise difficult to focus
on, including high-speed action, distant subjects and poorly
illuminated scenes.
High-precision AF with an F2.8 luminance
flux line sensor to greatly improve focusing
accuracy with very fast lenses
The K-5 II features an 11-point AF system, with nine crossshaped sensors to assure accurate focus even with subjects that
linear sensors often fail to detect. This high-precision AF system
also works with luminance flux based on F2.8 levels (using the
linear sensor at center). This drastically improves the autofocus
accuracy when using fast lenses with a maximum aperture of
F2.8 or larger, allowing you to optimize focusing accuracy using
a very narrow depth of field.

The K-5 I I features the PENTAX-developed
image sensor-shift type SR (Shake Reduction)
mechanism compatible with all PENTAX
interchangeable lenses. Using a high-sensitivity
gyro sensor, it effectively compensates for even
the slightest camera shake to optimize the
resolving power of the high-performance image
sensor. This mechanism is not only effective in
low-light conditions, but also comes in handy
during Live View shooting and movie recording.
Note: This mechanism compensates camera shake by as much as three shutter steps.
Image-composition fine-adjustment
to minimize tripod head adjustments
This function is one of the additional benefits of the SR mechanism.
When the K-5 II is mounted on a tripod, it allows you to effortlessly
make minute adjustment to image composition and compensate for
the camera’s tilt, by shifting the image sensor along the X and Y axes
and/or rotating it. This function is particularly useful in composing an
image during Live View shooting.

The K-5 II automatically compensates for horizontal inclination of
the image, and brings it to a level position by tilting the image
sensor by as much as ±2 degrees.* This function makes precise
horizontal alignment simple and effortless, not only for handheld
shooting, but also for tripod shooting.

that the K-5 II effectively and accurately
adjusts the position of the image sensor to
provide 100 percent field of view, without
compromising its compact design or
imaging performance. The combination of
a high-grade glass pentaprism and highperformance finder optics also assures
a large, bright viewfinder image ( at an
approximately 0.92-times magnification,
with a 50mm F1.4 lens set at infinity).

The K-5 II is a low-noise digital imaging system incorporating a CMOS image
sensor with high S/N ratio, a gain amplifier and a 14-bit A/D converter
in a compact body to deliver crisp colours, a wide dynamic range, smooth
gradational transitions and noise-free shadows. Its image reproduction at high
sensitivities has been greatly improved, with the wide sensitivity range of ISO
100 to ISO 12800 at default setting. Its top sensitivity can be pushed as high
as ISO 51200 when expanded with a custom function.

PRIME II with 16.28 eective megapixels
to deliver true-to-life, gradation-rich images
The K-5 II features the proven PRIME II as its imaging engine,
which processes 14-bit, multi-gradation image data at high
speed and produces high-quality, fine-detailed images with
approximately 16.28 effective megapixels that are rich in
gradations and fine in resolution. With its advanced noisereduction process, this imaging engine also helps the
K-5 II attain these super-high sensitivities.
The K-5 II’s high-sensitivity noise-reduction function can not only
be turned on and off, but it also offers a choice of a reduction
level from low, medium and high (with an identical noisereduction effect applied to all ISO sensitivity settings). Using a
custom function, you can even assign an OFF mode or one of
three reduction levels to each ISO sensitivity setting.
The user can assign an OFF mode to lower sensitivities, or one of the reduction levels to
higher sensitivities, via a custom function.
14-bit image data processing for true-to-life
image rendition and rich gradation
The K-5 II’s imaging system converts analog image data output
by its image sensor into 14-bit digital signals (4096 gradations
for each RGB colour), then sends them to the imaging engine
as multi-gradation image data possessing four times more
information than its 12-bit counterpart. Thanks to this depth of
information, the K-5 II can make faithful reproductions of subtle
nuances in colour or tonal graduation.
A new high-grade, glare-free monitor with outstanding visibility outdoors and superior scratch resistance
The K-5 II comes equipped with the newly developed Air Gapless LCD monitor. Sandwiched between the protective panel and the LCD
screen is a unique resin layer that cuts down the reflection and dispersion of light to effectively improve clarity and visibility. As the result,
you are assured of a clear view of the monitor even under bright sunshine, for easy viewing of images and menu settings. The protective
panel is also made of tempered glass to keep it free of scratches and abrasions.

The K-5 II offers 10 different white-balance control modes,
including AWB (Auto White Balance), to assure faithful
colour reproduction, regardless of the light source. The
original CTE mode, which emphasizes the image’s
dominant colour based on the colour temperature, is
particularly useful in dramatizing sunset scenes.

You can adjust the image’s sharpness to the desired level.
The Fine Sharpness and Extra Sharpness options, which
enhance the subject’s sharpness level without thickening
image outlines, add flexibility to sharpness control.

The K-5 II automatically and accurately compensates for
the lens’s distortion and chromatic aberration at the time
of shooting. The vignetting compensation function is also
provided in the accompanying software.
Extra Sharpness
The Extra Sharpness mode allows more minute control of image outlines than the
Fine Sharpness mode, making it more effective in creating a natural description of
scenery and hair texture.

This function allows you to expand the dynamic range
to minimize both whitewashed and pitch-black areas
lacking details. Highlights can be compensated by up to

When you press the AE-L button during the playback of a
last-captured JPEG-format image, the K-5 also saves it as a

measure the lighting condition over the entire image field.
As the result, this system minimizes the adverse effect of
point light sources, and prevents excessive underexposure
of subjects in backlight. The K-5 II also provides centerweighted metering and spot metering as options.

You can segment a recorded movie clip or remove
unwanted sections while viewing the clip on the LCD

Digital filters let you add various visual effects to dramatize
your images. The K-5 II offers a choice of 18 digital filters
during playback (including a Custom filter) or eight filters
during shooting. You can even apply as many as 20 filters
to a single image, while adjusting parameters of each
filter independently. By combining these filters with Custom
Images, you have countless creative options to produce
highly creative, personalized artworks.
The K-5 II’s HDR (High Dynamic Range) function takes a
set of three images at normal, under- and over-exposure,
then picks properly exposed areas from the original set
to synthesize them into a single image.* Since the K-5 II
automatically compensates for slight misalignment of the
composition among the three original images,** you can
take advantage of this convenient function even during
handheld shooting.
Note: Digital filters cannot be used when the camera is set in the RAW or
RAW+JPEG mode.
* Images must be recorded in the JPEG recording format. The HDR function is
not available when the camera is set in the RAW+JPEG mode.
** The automatic position adjustment function may not yield the desired effect
under certain conditions, including excessive misalignment of the three images,
certain lens focal lengths and particular subject patterns.

The K-5 II lets you capture multiple images (two to nine)
and synthesize them into a single, eye-catching image
with great ease. After every shutter release, the camera
repeats the process of synthesizing recorded images
and balancing their exposures (when the auto exposure
control function is activated), then instantly displays

personal preferences. The customization process is simple and
effortless, as you can select desired functions and confirm them
at a glance in the on-screen menus.
O-GPS 1 GPS Unit (optional accessory)

By mounting the O-GPS1 GPS unit onto the K-5 II’s hotshoe, you
can record the latitude, longitude and altitude of a shooting
location, universal time, and the camera’s precise direction on a
captured image. You can even check position data and create
image maps on your computer.

This function records the camera’s precise
direction in relation to true north. Coupled
with the location data, you can check the exact
location of shooting and the exact direction the
camera was pointed at the time of shooting.
This function displays the direction and
distance from the current position to a given
destination. Useful in finding scouted shooting
spots or revis iting previous shooting locations.
Coupled with the camera’s SR mechanism, this function simplifies the tracing and photographing of celestial bodies.
Since the SR unit automatically rotates in synchronization with the movement of celestial bodies during extended
exposures, it records all celestial bodies as solid points rather than blurry streaks, without requiring an equatorial

The K-5 II’s magnesium alloy casing not only is rigid,
lightweight and shock-resistant, but also provides
outstanding electromagnetic shielding. Its chassis, which
houses core components including the mirror box, is made
of high-rigidity, corrosion-resistant stainless steel. As a unit,
the K-5 II’s body has been built with the durability and
strength to withstand years of heavy-duty use.
This innovative mechanism removes all dust particles
clinging to the CMOS image sensor unit using supersonic
vibrations. Driven by a piezoelectric element, the antialiasing filter (made of optical glass in the K-5 II) vibrates
at supersonic speed — approximately 60,000 to 90,000
times per second — to effectively shake off even sticky
dust particles.

This system detects dust particles clinging to the CMOS
image sensor, and indicates their position on the LCD
monitor. Once the dust particles have been identified,
they can be easily removed on the spot by activating
the DR II mechanism, through the use of a dust blower,
or by using the optional O-ICK1 Image-Sensor Cleaning
Cold resistance down to -10°C
for solid, dependable performance at
freezing temperatures
The K-5 II has been subjected to a series of cold-resistance
tests at freezing temperatures down to -10°C. Every
single operation was closely examined during these tests,
including the operational stability of electronic circuits,
the operating precision of mechanical parts, the strength
and response of optical components, and the fluctuation
of battery voltage. That’s why the K-5 II always delivers
solid, dependable performance, even for shooting
sessions in freezing environments.
Note: Battery performance declines as the temperature goes down. When
shooting in cold environments, the user is advised to carry spare batteries
and keep them warm by storing them in an inside pocket.

An anti-aliasing filter installed in front of the image sensor can effectively suppress
false colour and moiré, but it often obscures the subject’s outlines.
The K-5 IIs has been designed without an anti-aliasing filter to optimize image
quality, by placing the priority on image resolution over all other factors.
This exclusive model brings out the full potential of the image sensor’s resolving
power to deliver exceptionally sharp, fine-detailed images.

What are false colours and moiré?
By vibrating the optical glass panel at
supersonic speed, this mechanism assures
dust-cleaning efficiency equivalent to that
of the K-5 II’s DR II mechanism.
With some subjects and in certain conditions, images taken with the K-5 IIs may have noticeable false colours and moiré. These
problems, however, can be solved by closing down the aperture or changing the distance to the subject.
