Touch Screen
Plus Job Recall Convenience
Touch Screen. The DynaView II is
controlled via a touch screen. There are no
required operator controls other than the
screen of the DynaView II. If desired, you
can add a remote alarm reset push-button.
This button simply silences all active
alarms.
with just a few touches on the DynaView II
screen.
Alarm Capabilities
Alarm Outputs. DynaView II
includes two binary alarm outputs, one for
warning alarms and another for limit alarms.
These can be attached to user supplied lights
or bells. The drivers are standard Opto-22
© output modules, so they can be
customized for AC or DC output, high or
low power. The standard output module is
12 VDC.
The four alarm thresholds are set
independently (high limit, high warning, low
warning, low limit). When one of the
thresholds is crossed, the associated output
goes true. It stays true until the repeat
length goes back in to limits or until the
operator acknowledges the alarm. Alarms
are acknowledged by touching the
DynaView II Screen or by pressing the
customer supplied external alarm reset
button. An active limit alarm will also cause
the screen of the DynaView II to flash.
Memorized Parameters Stored As
Recipes. DynaView II can memorize the
parameters associated with any machine
setup. These parameters include target
repeat length, high and low warning alarm
set points, high and low limit alarm set
points, chart resolution and several others.
A memorized collection is called a recipe.
You assign an eight-character name to the
recipe and store it in one of 30 possible
locations. An operator can recall any of the
30 memorized recipes from a scrolling list

OVERVIEW
The DynaView II monitors repeat
length in your process. It displays both the
current repeat length and the current error
from target length. It also displays the
current speed of the web. It can show repeat
length with three different format screens.
One is simply a large digital display of the
current repeat length, another is a “glass
strip chart” that shows the current length and
the recent history as deviation from set
point, and the third is a large, floating
diamond that displays the current length as
deviation from set point. The operator can
switch screens with a touch of a finger.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Data Output Flexibility
Serial Output. DynaView II has a
serial data output. This can be configured
for either RS-232 or RS-422 operation. It is
designed to be connected to a printer or to
another data collection computer.
Analog Output. DynaView II also
has an analog output that is proportional to
deviation from set point. This can be used
to drive an external meter or chart recorder.
It could also be used to trim some process
on the machine. For example, if you found
that over temperature is affecting repeat
length, you could trim the temperature value
using the error value from the DynaView II.
Display Lengths and Speeds. DynaView II
can calculate and display lengths and speeds
in a variety of units, both English and
metric. Units are kept as part of each recipe,
so the units can vary from job to job.
Photo Cell and Pulse Tachometer
Instrumentation. DynaView II is supplied
with a photo cell eye, pulse tachometer
wheel, encoder and cable. The instrument
works by watching an eye mark or other
repeating pattern on the web and measuring
the length between marks using the wheel
and encoder.
The standard wheel and encoder
supplied with the DynaView has a resolution
of 0.020”. If greater accuracy is required,
DynaView II can average over several eye
marks. You enter as one of the recipe
parameters, the minimum accuracy that is
required per eye mark.
DynaView II then calculates the
averaging factor and applies it
automatically. The only time that this is
detectable is when you require very high
accuracy and you are at the same time
running very slowly. Under these
conditions the screen will update only after
the required number of eye marks have
passed under the eye.
Optional Password Protection
Run Screens
Password system. The password
system incorporated in DynaView II can be
enabled or disabled. No password is
necessary to select recipes or to directly
enter target lengths and other values into the
DynaView II. If password protection is
enabled, an operator password is required
before access is granted to the recipe and
hardware setup screens. A supervisor
password is required to enable or disable the
password protection or to change the
passwords.
The operator can choose among
three screens that show run length. The
upper three-quarters of the screen is
different depending on which screen is
selected. The lower one-quarter of the
screen always displays the current web
speed and speed units, the current repeat
length and units, and a soft push-button
labeled “Setup”.

How DynaView II Develops the
Value for Run Length. DynaView II gets a
signal from the hardware each time a pattern
goes by the eye. At the same time, it gets
length information from the encoder/wheel.
Depending on the speed of the web, the
length of the pattern and the required
resolution, the length of a number of
patterns is measured instead of one pattern.
DynaView II then does the division and
passes the value of the average repeat length
to the screen handling routines. This is done
using a buffer that is large enough to hold
enough values to fill the strip chart.
The number of patterns that are
averaged is dynamic, depending on the
parameters above and the speed of the
display. When the web is running very fast,
DynaView II increases the number averaged
so that the values coming from the hardware
are received at a rate slow enough so that the
screen can keep up. Averaging over a large
number of patterns also increases the
measurement resolution and accuracy.
When the web is running very
slowly, DynaView II tries to decrease the
average so that the screen is updated about
three times a second. Due to the design of
the hardware, DynaView II always skips on
repeat between every group that is averaged.
This means that if the average is one (no
averaging at all), DynaView II can never get
values more quickly than one length value
for every two patterns that go by.
The DynaView II actually uses the
recipe parameter “minimum required
accuracy” to determine the minimum
number of patterns to average. For example,
if the minimum required accuracy is 0.002”,
then the minimum number of patterns to
average is set to 10, as the encoder/wheel
has an accuracy of 0.02” (0.02/0.002 = 10).
This means that when running slowly, the
DynaView II screen will get a value every
time 11 patterns go by the eye. (Remember,
DynaView II skips one pattern between
every group that it averages.)
Once the screen gets the averaged
value, more smoothing can take place. Each
time DynaView II gets a new value in the
screen buffer, it averages the new value with
the last M value before displaying it. M is
the smoothing parameter from the current
recipe. M is not dynamic, always remaining
at the value specified in the recipe. Note
that the smoothing value does not affect the
rate at which the screen displays values,
only how far back it averages the current
value with previous values.

SETUP GUIDELINES
1.
Set the minimum required accuracy to the appropriate value.
Don’t set this tighter than required, as it will affect the screen update rate at slow web speeds.
2.
Disable smoothing by setting the smoothing value to 1.
3.
If the repeat length values displayed are too noisy, increase the smoothing value until the display
can be easily read.
4.
Store the resulting values in the recipe.

Eye mount / Encoder mount
Choose a place on the machine where you wish to measure the print repeat length. This will
usually be immediately after printing, after drying, or just before the winder. The eye and the
encoder must be mounted in close proximity to each other in order to get accurate readings.
The eye has two possible orientations. In this case, the long dimension of the eye enclosure must
be across the web. The short dimension is the machine direction. The eye should be mounted on
a rigid bracket, which will allow position adjustment across the web. The eye is set up for each
job to look at a part of the print that will give one eye signal per one repeat of the main print
pattern. The focal length of the eye is 10mm. This is the distance from the end of the eye
enclosure to the web. The beam is visible and should be adjusted so that the spot is as small and
sharp as possible.
The encoder must be mounted so that it runs either on the web at a point where it is backed up by
an idler, or on the idler itself. If the idler is slipping on the web, the measurement will be
inaccurate, so running on the web is preferable. The pressure generated by the weight of the
housing is sufficient to run the encoder. If the encoder must be mounted vertically or inverted,
spring pressure must be arranged to provide the same amount of pressure. Unless otherwise
specified, the encoder is supplied with a one foot circumference wheel and provides 1200 counts
per revolution. These numbers are needed during the DynaView setup procedure.

INSTALLATION
Power Supply
The power supply is mounted separately from the main control box. It is connected to 110VAC
single-phase power. The circular connector is plugged into the bottom of the main box at the
position marked “+12VAC”. The “on/off” power switch is located next to the power supply
connector on the bottom of the main box. The power supply may be mounted anywhere within
reach of the cables.
16
DynaView II Instruction Manual
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Main Control Box Mounting
Choose a mounting location for the main box that is within reach of the cables from the eye and
encoder, and easily within reach and view of the operator. The main control box is used to set up
the system for each job and continuously displays the measurements. The box may be mounted
by means of the four bolt holes in the back panel. They may be reached from the front by
removing the front panel and temporarily disconnecting the ribbon cable and two wire power
cables. Disconnect them both from the back of the graphic display card that is mounted on the
front panel.
Attaching External Alarm
External alarm capability is optional. It is possible to set up alarms for each job. There are two
alarm levels; one is a warning level and the other is an out of specification alarm. Only the out
of spec alarm allows an output connection to be made. External alarms are optional. If desired,
an external alarm (either auditory or visual) may be wired into the I/O port.
External Reset
External alarm reset (optional) is provided at pins #11 and #12. (See drawing #15000088). This
requires a momentary contact closure to silence the alarm. Touching the screen performs the
same function.

a repeat of 10.000”, use a wheel factor of 1.001 to
account for the error (10.010 / 10.000 = 1.001).
The number used should always be very close to

Addendum to DynaView II Operator 10/30/96
New Features
Filter to discard bogus measurements
DynaView II now discards singular measurements that lie outside an error band. This band is
determined dynamically. DynaView II calculates the standard deviation of the last 50 readings
on every new data point. Any reading that is greater than three times this standard deviation
(three sigma) is discarded.
Data port terminating plug
If an operator enables either the RS232 or RS422 data port and no device is attached, DynaView
II ill appear to stop working. DynaView II uses hardware handshaking on this port. If no printer
or other device is attached to accept the data, DynaView fills its output buffer, then waits.
DynaView II is shipped with a terminating plug attached to the port. As long as the plug is left
in place, it will accept the data so the DynaView II will never hang. If you remove the
terminating plug, it is important to leave the data port disabled as long as no printer or other
device is present.

DynaView II changes in Version 2.02 08/12/98
You can now tell DynaView II to display the total distance over several eye marks.
Choose to either display the distance between each eye mark or display the total over several eye
marks. This option is part of each recipe. The “Set Target” screen has changed to accommodate
the new feature. Reach the “Set Option” screen from the main screen by pressing:
Setup à Setup à Make Recipe à Target Length à More
Note that there is a new button at the bottom of the screen. This button allows selection of either
“Fixed” or “Auto” mode for display and hardware averaging of the length between eye marks.
“Auto” mode is exactly as it was before Version 2.02. DynaView II will automatically select the
best averaging factor based on length between eye marks, line speed, and the minimum
resolution required as entered on the Set Option screen. In “Auto” mode, the DynaView II
display always shows the length between each eye mark.
“Fixed” mode is new. In “Fixed” mode, DynaView II always displays the length over a number
of eye marks. You specify the number over which to sum the length. The upper band on the Set
Target Screen changes from “Min. Resolution: xx” to “Display xx repeats”. Touch this band to
specify the number of repeats to sum.
In “Fixed” mode, the main display changes somewhat. About every 2 seconds, the band at the
bottom of the screen toggles between displaying the line speed and target length or displaying
the number of eye marks summed and the target length.
At fast line speeds and short lengths, DynaView II may still average over more than the base
number of eye marks specified on the Set Options screen. IT will always averages over an
integer multiplier of the base number. However, for example, if you specify to show the length
over 5 eye marks, and DynaView II finds that it can’t keep up, it will average over 10,20,30…
until it can complete the necessary calculations and display the result in time. It will always
divide by the appropriate factor to display the length over the number of eye marks specified on
the Set Option screen.
Fixed or Auto mode and the number of eye marks over which to sum is kept in each recipe.
Remember that DynaView II uses the first recipe (upper left on page 1) as its power-up default
recipe. If you want to use Fixed mode as default, save a new recipe in the first position after
selecting Fixed mode.

DynaView II changes in Version 2.03 10/22/98
You can now tell DynaView II to transmit from its data port at specified
intervals.
Overview
In previous versions, once the serial port was enabled, DynaView II would transmit every repeat
length data point. Starting with V2.03, you can specify transmitting options in each recipe.
These options are:
1. Do not transmit repeat length data points.
2. Transmit all repeat length data points.
3. Transmit a specified number of data points every time a specified length of web has gone
by.
Details of the above options are outlined below. Note that the serial port option selections in the
installation menu still remain. If you disable the serial port in the installation menu, it overrides
all the setting in the recipes.
Also note that you still must have a serial device or the loop back plug connected if you enable
the serial port. If you do not have anything connected and you enable the serial port in the
installation menu, DynaView II will hang after it fills its output buffer.
New Menu options
A new “Reports” menu has been added. Reach the “Reports” menu by touching:
Setup à Setup à Make Recipe à Reports
This menu is where you specify the recipe transmission options. You can enable and disable
transmission of reports. If you select to enable transmission, you can additionally specify
continuous or scheduled transmission. If you specify scheduled transmission, you can
additionally specify how many data points to transmit and how often to transmit them.
You can specify 1 to 255 data points to be transmitted every 10 to 1000 (in increments of 10)
length units. Length units are feet, meters, or yards depending on the target length units
specified in the target length menu.

Report contents
Recipe record
An additional line has been added to the recipe record. It will contain on of the following lines:
Reports: disabled
Reports: enabled. Rate: xxx samples every yyyy zz
Reports: enabled. Rate: continuous
Where xxx is a number from 1 to 255, yyyy is a number from 10 to 1000 and zz is either “ft” or
“m” or “yd”.
The recipe record is always transmitted if the serial port is enabled in the installation menu no
matter which of the three options is selected in the recipe menu.
Speed and roll Length record.
The content of the Speed and Roll Length record has not changed. It is:
Speed xxxx.xxx, Roll Len yyyy.y
These values are only calculated once a second and may be up to one second old. Speed and roll
length values are always transmitted in the units selected in the recipe.
If reports are enabled, this record is transmitted under all of the following conditions:
• When the speed has changed by more than 20 ft/min (or the equivalent in other unit systems).
• At the beginning of a scheduled group of repeat length data points.
• After a recipe change.
If reports are disabled, this record is never transmitted.

DynaView II changes in Version 2.05 2/15/99
You can now set periodic reports that trigger after 1 to 50,000 eye marks.
Previously you could choose from 1 to 1000 increments of 10 eye marks. Now it is possible to
choose any number from 1 to 50,000.
DynaView II now holds off reporting line speed changes until the line speed
has stabilized.
Previously DynaView II would report the new line speed every change of 20 fpm. Now it waits
for 30 seconds after the last line speed change before reporting the new value.
DynaView now inserts a new recipe header when a new roll is put in place.
Previously DynaView II did not make a specific entry in the report when a new roll was put in
place.
The report format has changed considerably.
There are now only two records: The recipe record and a process report record.
The Recipe record starts with a dollar sign (“$”) and ends with an asterisk (“*”). The recipe
record continues over several lines. All fields are delimited with commas (“,”).
The Process report record is contained on one line. It starts with a colon (“:”) and ends with a
CRLF pair. It contains 8 comma-delimited fields, 4 of which are labels. Length is the last
measured repeat length. Speed and RollLen are line speed and the length of web since the last
roll change. These two variables are updated once a second. AvgNow is the number of
impressions (eye marks) that were averaged to yield the length value.

This data can then be pasted into Notepad as a text file.
To import directly into Excel 2000
To import into Excel 2000, start Excel, choose “Data>import text file>choose the Notepad file
you just saved. The Excel import wizard will appear. Choose delimited file, comma delimited,
and “general” import which will keep the numerals as numbers, and the cell where the data
should be inserted. Excel will then parse the info into the spreadsheet for any later manipulation
required such as statistical analysis or charting or printing.
To import directly into Excel 97
For Excel 97, the procedure is a little different. After copying to the clipboard, switch to the
Excel workbook, click the upper left cell of the paste area and then click “paste”. Then select the
range of cells that contains the pasted data. The range can be any number of rows tall, but no
more that one column wide. On the Data menu, click Text to Columns. Follow the instructions
in the “Convert Text to Columns” Wizard to specify how you want to divide the text into
columns.
