Section 1: Evaluating Black-and-white Laser Printers
Overview
Based on continuous study of our customers’ productivity requirements,
Xerox recommends that the following criteria be used when evaluating which
black-and-white laser printer to purchase for your office.
Performance and Reliability
Cost-savings and Green Features
Does the printer deliver the high-end speed
necessary to keep up with the demands of your
busy workgroup? Does it include the processing
muscle required to handle multiple complex
jobs smoothly?
Is the printer value-priced, and does it continue
to keep costs down with sensibly green conservation options?
Design Flexibility
Does the printer have the security features
necessary to meet your demands? Can it be
password protected? Can it remove latent
images from its hard drive? Are there features in
place to safeguard confidential documents?
Does the printer offer multiple options and
configurations that let you customize it according to your workgroup’s needs? Is it easy to
install, operate and maintain? Can it handle the
different types of media users need for different
jobs? Does it come standard with generous
paper capacity, with the option to add paper
trays to keep pace with your workload?
Advanced Security
This section examines each of the
above evaluation criteria in greater
detail, covering the specific features
and performance attributes you should
look for in a black-and-white laser
printer. When the same criteria are
used to evaluate every device under
consideration, you’ll see how the Phaser
4600/4620 laser printers excel against
other manufacturers’ products.

Section 1: Evaluating Black-and-white Laser Printers
Performance and Reliability
Printer performance can be measured in many ways. Ultimately, however, any
evaluation should answer these questions: Can the printer increase the productivity
of a large workgroup through sufficient print speed and long-term reliability?
How the Phaser 4600/4620 laser
printers exceed the performance
and reliability requirements:
The Phaser 4600/4620 printers deliver
best-in-class print speeds:
The Phaser 4600/4620 printers have fewer
moving parts to wear out and less consumables to replace than competitive products.
In the unlikely event that a repair is needed,
you’re covered by the unmatched Xerox Total
Satisfaction Guarantee.
•Phaser 4600: Up to 55 ppm
Duty cycle
•Phaser 4620: Up to 65 ppm
The Phaser 4600/4620 offer a duty cycle of
275,000 pages per month*, easily enough to
handle the needs of most busy offices.
Print speed
Processing speed
The Phaser 4600/4620 printers handle heavy
workloads with ease, with a powerful 700 MHz
processor that keeps pace with a steady flow
of multiple users’ print jobs, whether simple or
complex, without delay.
First-page-out time
First-page-out time is a key consideration in
raw printer performance, particularly for jobs of
three pages or less. The Phaser 4600/4620 laser
printers produce a print job’s first page in as few
as 7.8 seconds.
No delays
The advanced Print Around feature eliminates
extended printing delays by holding a job in
need of resources (such as a different paper
size) and printing the next job in the queue,
which means no waiting for critical/timesensitive print jobs.
Print quality
The Phaser 4600/4620 printers deliver up to
1200 x 1200 enhanced image quality, which
ensures sharp, easy-to-read text and images
without compromising print speed.

Engineered for durability
* Maximum volume capacity expected in any one month.
Not expected to be sustained on a regular basis.
Connectivity options
The Phaser 4600/4620 can be connected
to a standalone PC, server or network via
10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet, USB 2.0, or
optional internal wireless 802.11n adapter.
Industry-standard support
The Phaser 4600/4620 support PCL® 6, PCL 5e,
PostScript 3 emulation, PDF and Epson. They
also fully support both Microsoft® Windows®
and non-Windows platforms, including Linux
and Apple® Macintosh.
Unicode font compatibility
The Phaser 4600/4620 support Unicode fonts
— an important feature for many businesses.
Section 1: Evaluating Black-and-white Laser Printers
Design Flexibility
A printer needs to meet the evolving demands of its users. Design flexibility
should be a key consideration when choosing a laser printer: Is the printer easy to set
up and operate? Can the printer be easily expanded or upgraded as business needs
change? Can it handle an increased workload, or large print jobs, when the needs
arise? Can it handle the different types of media users need for different jobs?
How the Xerox Phaser 4600/4620
laser printers exceed the design
flexibility requirement:
Easy setup and operation
The Phaser 4600/4620 printers feature an
easy-to-understand front console, and the
devices' automated setup process gets you
printing in minutes.
Memory expansion
If users must regularly print a high volume of
large, complex files, the printers' standard 256
MB of memory can be expanded to 768 MB
with the optional 512 MB upgrade.
Optional trays:
Paper output
•Tray 3* supports up to 550 sheets in custom
sizes from 3.9 x 8.3 in. to 8.5 x 14 in.

Phaser 4600DN, 4620DN, 4600DT and 4620DT
configurations include automatic two-sided
printing as a standard feature. The Phaser
4600N configuration can be upgraded to
include automatic two-sided printing. Standard
paper output capacity is 500 sheets.
•Trays 4-6 each support up to 550 sheets in

Cost-savings and Green Features
How does a printer put you on a path to increased cost-savings and a greener
workplace? Does it have a lower total carbon footprint over the product lifecycle?
Does it produce less waste? Can you get consistent image quality on environmentally
friendly media?

Message froM the ChairMan
To Our Shareholders:
It has been no surprise that this past year held
economic challenges for the company and the
greater global economy as a whole. Turbulence
in the valuation of the Euro had been forecast for
the previous three fiscal years. Due to cyclical
purchasing gaps and lagging economic indices,
our buying power was diminished significantly.
Despite these setbacks, we have positioned Global

growth in this challenging climate.

Xerox Phaser 4600/4620 Evaluator Guide
Highly efficient, no-hassle two-sided printing saves money and paper. Phaser 4600DN,
4620DN, 4600DT and 4620DT configurations
include standard automatic two-sided printing. The Phaser 4600N configuration can be
upgraded to include automatic two-sided
printing. Plus, N-up printing helps you extend
your paper conservation by grouping multiple
pages on a single sheet — perfect for printing
PowerPoint presentations.
Lower monthly energy bills
The Phaser 4600/4620 printers support
the highest ENERGY STAR® standards for
power-saving.
Separate consumables
Our split consumables let you get the most out
of every user-replaceable component. No more
having to replace an independent image marking drum simply because you’re out of toner.
Less waste
The long-life marking drum lasts longer and
requires fewer replacements, saving you money
and reducing landfill waste. Plus, with the Xeroxexclusive Green World Alliance program, you
can return all applicable customer-replaceable
units for proper recycling with no landfill impacts.
Toner usage
The Toner Saver mode allows the Phaser
4600/4620 printers to reduce toner usage when
printing documents that don’t require optimal
print quality.

Advanced Security
What types of security requirements are critical to your business? Does the
printer have the security features necessary to meet your demands? Can the printer
be password protected? Can it remove latent images from its hard drive? Are there
features in place to safeguard confidential documents?
How the Xerox Phaser 4600/4620
laser printers exceed the security
requirements:
Hard Drive
Integrated security
•Image Overwrite — electronically “shreds”
data stored on the printer’s optional hard
drive using an algorithm specified by U.S.
Department of Defense Directive 5200.28-M.
In today’s business environment, security is a
critical competency. The technology you deploy
within your office must include a comprehensive
set of capabilities to safeguard your businesscritical data against all potential vulnerabilities.
The Phaser 4600/4620 laser printers feature
advanced security technologies designed to
protect your confidential information from all
points of access.

•Secure Print — holds print jobs until released
for printing at the device by the job owner.
