ED-18
V3
Early Detection Analyzer-Dealer Edition
Chapter 1: Introduction
Chapter 1: Introduction
The ED-18
V3
Early Detection Analyzer is a rugged handheld battery and electrical system analyzer that features a 32-bit microprocessor, a 128 x 128-pixel LCD screen with an iconbased user interface, a cell phone style alphanumeric keypad, barcode scanner and an integrated thermal printer.
The ED-18
V3
provides a complete analysis of 12-volt vehicle batteries and starting/charging systems. Using patented conductance technology and infrared battery temperature detection, the ED-18
V3
will display battery condition (Good,
Replace, Marginal, etc.) as well as voltage and available cranking power based on the temperature of the battery. The analyzer features new multi-scan conductance technology for difficult-to-diagnose batteries and includes a database with average temperature extremes and battery life information based on local zip codes.
The analyzer integrates the in-vehicle battery test along with the starting and charging system test. The charging system analysis takes multiple measurements while the charging system is exercised under varying conditions to determine if it is capable of charging the battery while supplying the necessary power for the electrical system.
The analyzer also includes a new conductance circuit test that allows for simultaneous calculation of voltage drop across the positive (+) and negative (–) sides of the vehicle’s cable circuit, and the total circuit drop. In addition, the analyzer incorporates a multimeter with a scope mode and an IR temperature sensor, making it a complete diagnostic tool.
Required by California Prop. 65
Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds, chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.
• Battery acid is highly corrosive. If acid enters your eyes, immediately flush them thoroughly with running cold water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention. If battery acid gets on your skin or clothing, wash immediately with water and baking soda.
• Always wear proper safety glasses or a face shield and protective clothing when working with or around batteries.
• Keep hair, hands, and clothing as well as the analyzer cords and cables away from moving engine parts.
• Remove any jewelry or watches before you start servicing the battery.
• Use caution when working with metallic tools to prevent sparks or short circuits.
• Never lean over a battery when testing, charging or jump starting it.
Test Preparation
General Safety Precautions
Because of the possibility of personal injury, always use extreme caution when working with batteries. Follow all manufacturers’ instructions and BCI (Battery Council
International) safety recommendations.
Risk of explosive gases
Batteries generate explosive gases during normal operation, and when discharged or charged.
Batteries can produce a highly explosive mix of hydrogen gas and oxygen, even when the battery is not in operation. Always work in a well-ventilated area. Never smoke or allow a spark or flame in the vicinity of a battery.
Inspecting the Battery
Before starting the test, visually inspect the battery for:
• Cracked, buckled, or leaking case. If you see any of these defects, replace the battery.
• Corroded, loose, or damaged cables and connections. Repair or replace as needed.
• Corrosion on the battery terminals, dirt, or acid on the case top. Clean the case and terminals using a wire brush and a mixture of water and baking soda.
• Low electrolyte level. If the electrolyte level is too low, add distilled water to the level indicated by the battery manufacturer, and fully charge the battery. Do not overfill.
• Corroded or loose battery tray and hold-down fixture.
Tighten or replace as needed.
• Loose battery cable connections. Repair or replace as needed. Terminals on side-post batteries must be tight-
ened before testing.

Care and Maintenance
Cables
To ensure proper test readings and the long life of your
ED-18
V3 and test cables:
• Periodically clean the clamps using a mixture of baking soda and water or mild hand soap, and a small non-metal brush. An old toothbrush works great.
• DO NOT CARRY THE ED-18 BY THE CABLES. Carrying the analyzer or swinging it by the cables puts unnecessary strain on the cable set. Always carry the analyzer and the cables together.
• DO NOT put the analyzer on a bench and let the cables hang over the side of the bench. This can stress the connection between the cables and the analyzer.
• ALWAYS connect and disconnect the clamps to the battery by opening and closing them. NEVER pull on the cable set to remove the terminal clamps. Abuse can cause premature failure and lowered conductance readings.
• DO NOT WRAP THE CABLE SET AROUND THE ANALYZER when it’s not in use. This puts unnecessary strain on the cable set.
• NEVER attempt to repair a cable set or replace the clamps yourself. Any modifications to the cable set or clamps can affect the accuracy of the measurements and will void the warranty. they get in trouble, allowing them to make an informed decision regarding preventative battery replacement. Given the benefits versus the cost of performing the test, you should test your customer’s battery and electrical system at every oil change, or at least twice per year before the seasons change.
Conventions Used in This Manual
To help you learn how to use your ED-18
V3
analyzer, the manual uses these symbols and typographical conventions:

Servicing Your ED-18
V3
If your analyzer needs repair, call the IBSA ED18 Help Desk toll-free at 1-877-GO4-ED18 (1-877-464-3318).
Servicing the analyzer yourself may void your warranty.
Housing
Wipe surface dirt from the analyzer’s housing with a soft cloth dampened with a solution of mild soap and water. Do not immerse the analyzer in water or let water flow over the analyzer. Make sure the IR temperature sensor on the front of the analyzer housing is clean from surface dirt. Do not open the housing, other than the battery door. There are no customer serviceable parts inside, and opening the housing will void the warranty.
Analyzer Maintenance
Replacing The Printer Paper
The ED-18
V3
kit includes an extra roll of thermal printing paper.
The roll size is 2¼ inches wide by 1⁷/₈ inches in diameter and no longer than 85 feet.
The ED-18
V3
as a Preventative Maintenance Tool
Nobody wants to be stranded because of a dead battery.
Unfortunately for most people, the first sign of battery or starting/charging system failure comes when the car won’t start on a cold morning, or after it has been sitting for a few days. By using the ED-18
V3
as a preventative maintenance tool for testing systems, technicians can find issues before the customer is stranded due to a system failure, which is a winwin for everyone.
Using the ED-18
V3
for preventative maintenance provides a valuable service to your customers and opportunity for battery sales that would very likely go to someone else if that failure occurred in the field. Using the analyzer provides an early warning of potential non-starting situations and allows you to alert customers to a possible battery failure before

The system is showing normal output from the alternator. No problem detected.
The alternator is not providing charging current to the battery.
√ Check the belts to ensure the alternator is rotating with the engine running. Replace broken or slipping belts and retest.
√ Check all connections to and from the alternator, especially the connection to the battery. If the connection is loose or heavily corroded, clean or replace the cable and retest.
√ If the belts and connections are in good working condition, replace the alternator. (Older vehicles use external voltage regulators, which may require only replacement of the voltage regulator.)
The alternator is not providing enough current to power the system’s electrical loads and charge the battery.
√ Check the belts to ensure the alternator is rotating with the engine running. Replace broken or slipping belts and retest.
√ Check the connections from the alternator to the battery. If the connection is loose or heavily corroded, clean or replace the cable and retest.
The voltage output from the alternator to the battery exceeds the normal limits of a functioning regulator.
√ Check to ensure there are no loose connections and that the ground connection is normal. If there are no connection problems, replace the regulator. (Most alternators have a built-in regulator requiring you to replace the alternator. In older vehicles that use external voltage regulators, you may need to replace only the voltage regulator.)
The regulator controls voltage output based on the battery voltage, under-hood temperature, and vehicle loads used. In other words, it controls the maximum voltage the system can produce based on the current needs and amount of current that can be produced by the spinning of the rotor in the alternator. The normal high limit of a typical automotive regulator is 14.5 volts +/–0.5. Refer to the manufacturer specifications for the correct limit, which may vary by vehicle type.
A high charging rate will overcharge the battery and may decrease its life and cause it to fail. If the battery test decision is REPLACE and the charging system test shows a HIGH OUTPUT, check the battery’s electrolyte levels. A symptom of overcharging is battery fluid spewing through the vent caps, which causes low electrolyte levels and will harm the battery.
Diode Decisions and Recommendations
Decision Action
EXCESSIVE RIPPLE One or more diodes in the alternator aren’t functioning or there’s stator damage, which is shown by an excessive amount of AC ripple current supplied to the battery.

Chapter 7: Circuit Test
If the test results for the starter or charging systems indicate that there could be a problem, you may want to perform the Circuit Test to determine if it is due to worn cables or bad connections between the battery and the alternator or starter.
Worn cables or bad connections create higher resistance, which causes a voltage drop across the circuit. The voltage drop reduces current carrying capability that displays the same symptoms as a weak alternator or starter and may cause premature battery failure.
NOTE: The test requires a complete circuit. If you’re testing a system with a remote solenoid, you can test from the battery to the solenoid, but not from the battery to the starter.

This test calculates the voltage drop on the positive (+) and negative (–) sides of any circuit as well as the total voltage drop. This menu includes:
Battery Ground Test
Starter Circuit Test
Alternator Circuit Test
Other Circuit Test (user-defined)
There’s no need to run the engine. The Circuit Test uses
Conductance Technology to send a signal through the circuit at the component under test. The analyzer then simultaneously calculates the voltage drop on the positive (+) and negative
(–) sides of any circuit as well as the total voltage drop. The amperage range for each of the four tests is 0 to 1000 A.
When you change the setting from the factory defaults, the analyzer will store your setting in memory for your next test.
There are three preset tests:
BATTERY GROUND

Appendix A: Frequently Asked Questions ED-18
V3
Early Detection Analyzer-Dealer Edition
Appendix A: Frequently Asked Questions
Testing
Is there anything that needs to be done before testing the battery?
Yes. First inspect the battery to determine it is not damaged and the cables are not cracked/damaged. Then make sure the terminals are clean and free of corrosion, dirt, or acid. Refer to
“Before the Test” for recommendations when visually checking the battery.
Make sure you have excellent connections. Corrosion or an improper connection may hamper a valid result. The serrated end of the connector is the only good connection point.
Do I need to do anything different with side-post batteries?
Yes. Always re-torque the side-post terminals to 70-90 inch-pounds before testing. If the test result is “Marginal” or ”Replace,” it’s best to disconnect the battery cables and connect side-post adaptors to the battery, then retest.
What if I cannot connect the ED-18
V3
to the battery posts?
It is recommended to always connect the ED-18
V3
directly to the battery posts. However, if you are unable to connect to the battery posts, connect to the jumper posts. Jumper posts are located in the engine compartment and are connected to a battery that is located in the fender well, under the back seat, or in the trunk. If the result is MARGINAL or REPLACE when you test at the jumper posts, you will be prompted to retest at the battery posts.
What is system noise?
System noise is usually caused by current flowing through the battery during testing. Make sure all electrical loads are
OFF
and the vehicle doors are closed. Occasionally a vehicle will have a high enough current discharged from the battery (keyoff drain) that may remain ON for minutes after the vehicle is shut-off. Typically two to three minutes is the maximum time to allow the vehicle to test its on-board computer system.
Refer to “Troubleshooting Test Problems.”
How does the ED-18
V3
test the alternator?
The ED-18
V3
uses the latest electronic method of analyzing the alternator. It analyzes five stages of alternator capability:
1. No-load idle voltage (minimum current from the alternator).
2. Loads-on Idle (normal current applied similar to stop and go traffic).
3. No-load high rpm (testing voltage regulation stability).
4. Loads-on high rpm (reevaluating with normal current loads applied).
5. AC output from the alternator (through diode leakage).
When electrical loads are applied at idle and then at high rpm, a properly functioning alternator provides adequate current
(amps) to the electrical loads while maintaining a proper voltage level. With all normal vehicle loads on, the alternator is providing approximately 30 to 50 amps while sustaining a proper and stable voltage level. The analyzer will detect if the alternator is weak or bad and cannot sustain adequate voltage level.
TIP: Always apply constant electrical loads such as:
• vent: high blower speed.
• headlights: high beam.
• rear window defroster (if available).
• inside courtesy lights.
Do not allow cyclic (on/off) electrical loads to operate during the test. They may spike a higher than normal AC/DC voltage through the alternator. Cyclic loads include windshield wipers, air conditioning, and the windshield defroster. For example, turning on the air conditioning or defroster will start the air compressor, which turns on and off to regulate temperature.
Instead, turn on the HVAC selector to “vent” and turn on the high speed blower, which is a constant electrical load.
What if I get a HIGH VOLTAGE or PHASE OPEN result?
Insure that all cyclic loads are off. If the analyzer displays either of these two results while all cyclic loads are off, use the analyzer’s Scope function to verify the AC output at the alternator’s B+ connection.
What if the ED-18
V3
does not detect the rpm during the charging system test?
The ED-18
V3
may not detect the rpm in some vehicles (especially in older Honda vehicles) because of minimal charging voltage variation from idle speed to high engine rpm. Continue to test the charging system. If the analyzer will not allow testing to continue, ensure that all accessory electrical loads are then retest.
OFF
,
What’s normal for the starting test?
The starting system test causes an initial drop in voltage, which is normal and often can be down to approximately 8 volts.
Digital multimeters will not capture this initial drop because their recognition speed is slower than that of the analyzer.
TIP: The vehicle battery should be near full charge before you conduct the starting and charging systems tests.
