Hardness is measured by a strain gauge which is incorporated into the load

cell. The force exerted by the tablet on the load cell prior to breaking causes the strain gauge to deform thus creating a change in its resistance which is then subsequently measured.

The feed speed of the test jaw in test mode is fixed at 2,3 mm/second.

The hardness station has a measuring range of 3-500 Newtons and accepts tablets up to a maximum diameter/ length of 26 mm. A special version to accommodate larger tablets is available on request.

Load Cell:

Reproducibility: 0.01 % nominal range

Linearity: 0.03% nominal range

Overload Range: 150% nominal range

On request the TBH 20 can be fitted with an option to measure tablet dia-

meter/length as well as hardness

(please ensure this option is clearly stated on your order if required). The diameter option has a measuring range of 2.00-26.00 mm.

When using Measuring Mode 0, the moving jaw initially advances in fast mode (approx. 5.0 mm/second) during which time the load on the load cell is constantly monitored. When the microprocessor detects an increase in load that is greater than the pre-selected sensitivity ie. the moving jaw touches the tablet, then the speed of the jaw is reduced to the normal test mode whereupon the actual measurement commences.

Measuring Mode 1 is only available on those testers fitted with the diameter option. In this case, the change position at which the speed changes is governed by the sum of the diameter of the tablet plus the "pre-breaking" distance as entered into the programme menu.

The TBH 20 has a hardness measu-

ring accuracy of ± 1 Newton and a diameter measuring accuracy of

± 0.05 mm.

The programme menu of the TBH 20 provides the following options:

- Display of hardness in either Newtons

(N), Kiloponds (kp) or Strong

Cobbs (SO).

- Display of diameter in either mm or inches.*

- Selection of the number of tablets required for a test run (1 -99).

- Adjustment of the time delay between test cycles to allow for removing tablet debris and cleaning the test station between tablets.

- Adjustment of the hardness measurement sensitivity (range 3 N to 40 N).

- Selection of two different test modes.*

- Adjustment of a pre-breaking value on

Measuring Mode 1 .*

Technical Details

Similar in construction to the basic TBH

20, the TBH 30 Series is equipped with the following features:

The TBH 30 will accommodate any samples falling within the range of

3-500 Newtons hardness, 2.00 to

26.00 mm diameter and 1.50 to 8.00

mm thickness. Special versions for harder (up to 1000 N) and larger samples are available on request. Please consult our technical staff for full details.

The feed speed of the test jaw can be adjusted from between 0.50 and 3.00

mm/second via the programme menu.

Two measuring modes are available (for description see page 4).

The automatic magazine Model TBH

30 M is an optional ancillary to the TBH

30 Series. Supplied as an alternative to the fixed jaw. the automatic magazine comprises a carousel with 10 tablet positions, the movement of which is synchronised with the moving jaw. Prior to the start of each test run, any remaining tablets are automatically removed from the magazine and the individual tablet compartments cleaned of debris by a series of brushes mounted in the magazine head.

The test run is automatically paused if there are insufficient number of tablets in the magazine to complete the test.

The test can be restarted once the magazine has been refilled.

The TBH 30 MD is equipped with a

thickness measuring station and an automatic magazine. This means that the same instrument can be employed to measure not only the hardness and diameter of the test samples but also their thickness. The thickness of the sample is measured using a precision potentiometer which is automatically zeroed after each test run.

The measuring accuracy of the TBH

30 is similar to that of the TBH 20.

The user-friendly programme menu of the TBH 30 series has been specifically designed to provide ease of interaction with the operator whilst maintaining the comprehensive reporting facilities demanded by today's pharmaceutical industry. Even in "Stand-Alone" mode, the

TBH 30 has sufficient memory to store the relevant data applicable to up to 49 different products including such information as product name, number and type together with the nominal values and limits (T1, T2 and T3) for hardness, diameter and thickness applicable to same.

The TBH 30 M includes an automatic magazine for feeding the samples into the test station.

The test station is emptied automatically and the remaining tablet debris removed by means of brushes attached to the magazine carousel.

Technical Details

All modern versions of the TBH 30 MD

(fitted with a 8 x 40 display) can be upgraded to include weight as well as hardness, thickness and diameter by the addition of the automatic weighing station Type WS. A separate weighing station Type WS 50 is available for eartier versions manufactured before 1997 fitted with the smaller LCD-display (see separate brochure).

The automatic feed magazine of the

WS is capable of accepting up to 23 samples having a maximum diameter/ length of 26 mm. Both magazines of the TBH 30 MD and WS are automatically emptied prior to the test run and the magazine of the TBH 30 MD is cleaned of debris.

The WS features an unique "free-floa-

ting" balance pan system which ensures disturbance- and error-free weight determination by eliminating contact with other parts of the tester.

The weighing station Model WS has a

measuring range of 20 mg to 20 grams and an accuracy of ± 0.1 mg.

A diversion chute serves to direct the samples eminating from the weighing station to the magazine of the TBH 30

MD whereupon the other three test parameters are measured.

Control of both the WS and the data handling is provided by the in-built microprocessor of the TBH 30 MD which automatically adds two further menus, "Weight" and "Press Set-Up", to the standard set-up as soon as it recognises the presence of the WS.

All test parameters as well as calibration

documentation can be printed out as required by connecting the TBH 30 MD to a suitable printer.

The tolerance limit T3 serves as the

plausibility limit (to segregate such results as those eminating from no tablet, a broken tablet or two or three tablets being introduced to the test station at the same time) and is password protected. Any results falling outside the T3 limits are marked "FM"

(faulty measurement) on the subsequent report and are excluded from the statistics. To achieve the prerequisite number of tablets to be tested, the software automatically compensates for any exclusions by supplementing those excluded with further tablets.

To meet the ever increasing demands for support documentation, the programme provides a

free remarks notepad section to

allow for such information as batch number, storage time, storage temperature etc.

The instrument is fitted as standard with a full alpha-numeric touch-sen-

sitive keyboard equipped with separate function keys for special operations.

An illuminated back-lit LCD-display with 8 x 40 digits serves to facilitate data entry and to display the results and statistics following the test run.

Technical Details

The ERWEKA TBH 30 GMD is a combination tester for testing weight, hardness, thickness and diameter of round tablets.

The ERWEKA TBH 30 GMD features two independent magazines; a feed magazine capable of accepting 23 test samples, and a transport magazine to transfer the test samples from the weighing station to the hardness- and diameter measuring station. On completion of the test any remaining tablets are automatically removed from the magazine and the individual tablet compart-

ments are cleaned of debris by a series of brushes mounted in the magazine head.

On request segregation of the test

samples is achieved by a special vibratory system to feed individual tablets from the tablet inlet or the optional 10chamber batch feeder into the weighing system. A photoelectric sensor positioned at the outlet of the vibratory system detects each individual tablet as it is deposited from the feed to the "balance boat", and pauses the vibrator until the balance boat is cleared.

As with the TBH 30 M, the TBH 30 MD and the TBH-WS, the test run is auto-

matically paused if there are insuffi-

cient tablets in the magazine to complete the test. This condition is Indicated to the operator by an acoustic and optical signal: the test can be restarted once the magazine has been refilled.

The weighing station is isolated from the feed magazine to avoid errors emanating from tablet debris. The weight of each sample is determined using a special "balance boat".

The feed speed of the hardness testing jaw is adjustable as in the TBH 30 (see page 6).

The measuring range of the TBH 30

GMD is identical to the TBH 30 MD and

WS (see page 6 and 9).

The measuring accuracy of the test stations is ± 1 N, ± 0.05 mm and ± 0.1

mg respectively.

The system is controlled by means of a

touch-sensitive alphanumeric keypad

(which incorporates additional function keys to assist and speed entry) linked to the in-built microprocessor which serves to process both general and batch data etc.

The in-built software is similar to that employed on the TBH 30 MD (see page

6) but with two additional menu items for "Weight" and "Press Set-up" . The system parameters relating to weight can be setup in four ways dependent so whether DAB, EP, DSP or in-house specifications are to be employed.

i

The semi-automatic Tester for measuring the weight, hardness, thickness and diameter of round tablets.

Technical Details

As with all the ERWEKA Tablet Hardness Testers based on the TBH 30, the

TBH 30 GMD has sufficient in-built

memory to store the relevant data applicable for up to 49 different products.

The Tolerance Limit T3 serves as the

plausibility limit (to segregate such results as those eminating from no tablet, a broken tablet, or several tablets being introduced to the test station at the same time) and is password protected.

Any results failing outside the T3 limits are marked "FM" (faulty measurement) on the subsequent report and are excluded from the statistics. To achieve the prerequisite number of tablets to be tested, the software automatically compensates for any exclusions by supplementing with further tablets out of the magazine.

An illuminated back-lit 320 digit LCD-

display facilitates ease of data entry and serves to display the test results and statistics. The contrast of the LCDdisplay may be adjusted from the programme menu.

The throughput of the TBH 30 GMD is

5-6 samples/minute depending on tablet size, hardness and which measuring mode is employed.

All calibration procedures are menu driven and password protected from the in-built software and can be documented in the form of a calibration protocol by connecting the instrument to a suitable printer.

The calibration set is provided as standard (see TBH 30 MD page 7). An additional 50 gram weight is included for calibrating the balance.

The results, together with appropriate statistics (date, time and date of last calibration) can be printed out by connecting the instrument to a suitable printer.

A separate PC software package operating under the Microsoft environment and suitable for both the ERWEKA TBH

30 GMD and the TBH-WS, linked to either an IBM or IBM compatible PC, is available on request (description see

Technical Details

The MULTICHECK Tablet Combination

Tester has been designed for measuring the 4 essential parameters of weight variation, diameter, thickness and hardness of tablets, coated tablets, caplets and similar dosage forms. It is an indispensable tool for the in-process and quality control of pharmaceutical production.

Options on the standard unit include either a 12 or 20 station batch feeder.

Each magazine chamber of the feeder has a capacity of approx. 110 ml, capable of accepting up to 99 samples.

Segregation of the test samples is

achieved by a special vibratory system.

A circular vibratory bowl feeder linked to a linear transporter serves to feed individual tablets from the standard tablet inlet or the optional batch feeder into the weighing system.

A photo-electric sensor positioned at the outlet of the vibrating feed system automatically detects each individual tablet as it is deposited from the feed to the "balance boat", and pauses the vibrator until the "balance boat" is cleared.

Prior to the start of each test run a special diversion chute, located between the photo-electric sensor and the "trap door" of the "balance boat", diverts any remaining tablets left in the system to waste.

The weight of each sample is determined by means of a special "balance-

boat" which has been designed to eliminate errors caused by a build-up of tablet debris.

Weight is measured by a Sartorius Balance Type BP 61 S (a Mettler Type

AM 54 can be supplied as an alternative) which is positioned on a separate independently levelled base plate within the MULTICHECK housing.

A specially designed and patented re-

ciprocating transporter feeds the test samples from each test station in turn.

This special design guarantees that the sample is positioned correctly in the thickness measuring station and that oblongs are positioned at exactly 90 degrees to the test jaw at the hardness measuring station.

The feed path and test jaw are auto-

matically cleaned of tablet debris by means of special brushes and springloaded Teflon scrapers mounted on the reciprocating Transporter Head.

Thickness is measured by a precision potentiometer operating on the displacement principle. The measuring foot is mounted on precision guides to guarantee movement and is adjustable to ensure that it remains parallel with the test-bed.

12

MULTICHECK

A fully automatic Batch Feeder capable of accepting up to 12 or 20 different batches of tablets is available as an optional extra.

Operation is completely automatic. A circular vibratory bowl feeder linked to a linear transporter serves to feed individual tablets from the batch feeder (magazine) or tablet inlet into the weighing station.

4 Parameters -1 Unit

Innovative Technology for and documentation of different dosage forms.

Samples are weighed in a special „balance boat". The balance is zeroed automatically prior to each test.

MULTICHECK with optional 12chamber Batch Feeder and Centering and Holding Down Holder.

Technical Details

Diameter is measured by monitoring the movement of a precision stepper motor. The MULTICHECK automatically logs the diameter and, in the case of oblongs, uses the value obtained to ensure that the sample is correctly positioned prior to carrying out the hardness test. If the diameter falls outside the T3 plausibility limits the instrument automatically assumes that the sample is positioned incorrectly and the result is effectively excluded from the statistics.

In this case, the MULTICHECK automatically compensates for these exclusions by supplementing with further tablets until the prerequisite number of tablets has been achieved.

Two different modes are available to

measure hardness (see page 4).

The sensitivity of the hardness measurement is adjustable.

A special tooling stage utilising interchangeable tooling is also available on request to facilitate the correct orienta-

tion of irregularly shaped tablets like oblongs, coated tablets, etc. at the hardness stage. The movement of the tooling stage is synchronised with that of the transporter and the hardness testing station to position the sample correctly in position prior to hardness testing.

Measuring ranges and accuracy are identical to that of the TBH 30 GMD

(see page 10).

Provision is made as standard to select the unit of measurement to be applied to each parameter (Newton, Kilopond or Strong Cobb in the case of hardness; mm or inches in the case of thickness and diameter; g or mg in the case of weight).

The in-built microprocessor of the

MULTICHECK incorporates sufficient

memory to store the data relative to up to 100 different products. Such data includes: product name, number, form and the relevant nominal values for weight, thickness, diameter/length and hardness. The software automatically calculates the tolerances to be applied to each parameter depending on the nominal value and the type of limits selected ie. DAB, ER USP or inhouse-standard.

The Tolerance Limit T3 serves as the

plausibility limit (to segregate such results as those eminating from no tablet, a broken tablet, or several tablets being introduced to the test station at the same time) and is password protected.

Any results falling outside the T3 limits are marked "FM" (faulty measurement) on the subsequent report and are excluded from the statistics. To achieve the prerequisite number of tablets to be tested, the software automatically compensates for any exclusions by supplementing with further tablets via the vibration system.

13

Technical Details

Five different sample data fields can be applied to each product. This includes the ability to specify the number of tablets to be tested for each indivdual parameter (the throughput can be substantially increased by omitting or restricting to a specified number of tablets, one or a number of the individually measured parameters).

Control of the system is by in-built microprocessor via an alphanumeric

touch-sensitive keypad which incorporates additional keys to assist and speed entry.

An illuminated 320 digit LCD-display facilitates easy data entry and provides a "real-time" indication of test results as they occur.

The results, together with appropriate statistics, date, time and date of last calibration can be printed out by connecting the instrument to a suitable printer.

Displays and print-outs are selectable in four languages; English, French,

German or Spanish.

All test results are lost at the start of a new test run, or when the

MULTICHECK is switched off.

The MULTICHECK has two interfaces

(similar to the TBH 20, see page 5) as standard. On request, a RS 485 interface is available in place of the standard

RS 232 interface.

The MULTICHECK Windows™ based

software pack is a comprehensive and versatile software package for the fully automatic "real-time" generation of tablet data in terms of weight, thickness, diameter and hardness. System requirements are Windows 3.11 (or upwards), Windows 95 or Windows NT together with an IBM compatible PC having a minimum entry level of Pentium 133 Processor, 16 MB RAM and

80 MB free HD.

The software programme is protec-

ted by passwords operating on a tiered access level structure. To avoid unauthorised or incorrect data entry, the software provides the facility to check data entry by a further operator ("Four-

Eyes" principle). All individual test results are stored, the resulting statistics calculated and displayed in histogram format.

The software will accept both individual random samples introduced manually by the operator or samples introduced automatically via the software programme. Random samples can be included in the resulting Batch Summary if desired. Last, but not least, the Batch

Summary and Trend Analysis functions can be used to display, print or plot tabular and graphical information relating to the selected batch.

MULTICHECK

The patented reciprocating conveyor transports and positions the samples into each individual measuring station.

The patented tooling stage located at the hardness measuring station serves to position irregular shaped tablets.

A special test programme is available for the checking of soft and hard gelatine capsules.
