Glow Power!
Originally designed for training, tens of thousands of newcomers have successfully learned to fly with a SIG
KADET SENIOR. A flat-bottom airfoil, light weight construction and light wing loading allow the Kadet Senior
to cruise around effortlessly at low speeds. Even experienced R/C pilots enjoy the SIG KADET'S slow leisurely
flight characteristics - doing touch and go landings at the speed of a walk. The KADET SENIOR is also a versatile workhorse - float flying, banner or glider tow, airborne camera, parachute drop, night flying with add-on lights,
and just about any other load carrying task is easy for the giant KADET SENIOR. The huge 2-piece wing is
IMAA legal at 80-1/2" span and provides massive lifting ability.
The KADET SENIOR EG ARF gets you in the air quickly. Each part is meticulously built using quality woods
and factory covered with premium UltraCote® (aka ORACOVER®) transparent blue or red, with white trim. The
KADET SENIOR EG ARF is 90% assembled and includes a rugged fiberglass cowl, a complete hardware package and fully illustrated, step-by-step assembly manual.

Fly With Electric Or Glow Power!
The SIG KADET LT-40 EG is the latest ARF rendition of America's favorite R/C trainer, now redesigned
to accommodate either electric or glow power. Like all SIG KADETS, the LT-40 EG behaves perfectly in flight with true "hands off" stability. It's large size and light wing loading lets it fly slower than
other trainers. Slower speed gives the student pilot more time to think and react to what the model is
doing. That makes learning to fly R/C quicker and easier! This beautifully handcrafted airplane takes
no shortcuts in quality of materials or workmanship. No foam - this is a traditional all-wood model airplane, which means it's light, strong and durable!
Expertly covered with UltraCote® (aka ORACOVER®) premium polyester covering material. The LT40 EG ARF is engineered for quick assembly with a minimal number of parts. A photo illustrated
assembly manual takes you easily through each step.
Quality hardware includes spinner, wheels, pushrods,
fuel tank, etc.

You won't find a better way to get started in R/C flying than with the KADET LT-40 EG ARF
2
With a 70 inch wingspan the SIG LT-40 EG ARF is larger than other .40 size trainers on the market. This gives the LT-40 EG
ARF two big advantages. Visibility - the LT-40 EG ARF is simply easier to see. Beginners tend to let the model drift far away
sometimes. When other trainers are just a small dot in the sky, you'll still be able to see the LT-40 EG ARF and maintain control. Wing Loading - wing loading is how much weight the wing is carrying and for trainers you want a very light wing loading. This let’s the airplane fly slower, giving you more time to think and react. With the LT-40 EG ARF, you won't have that
uncomfortable feeling of always being one step behind the model. Stalls are gentle, turns are smooth and landing approaches are stable and predictable all the way to touchdown.

Almost-Ready-To-Fly
This is a all-wood ARF model airplane. All of the major components (wing, fuselage, tail surfaces, landing gear, etc.) are factory built and finished, and ready for final assembly. The motor and radio systems are not included.
Easy to Assemble and Repair
Assembly: The LT-40 ARF is engineered for quick assembly with a minimal number of parts.
Repair: Because the LT-40 ARF is pre-covered in only one color (white), repairs are easy. All you need is white UltraCote®
(aka ORACOVER®) and a new decal sheet. Even a major structural repair can be recovered to match perfectly.
Customize: Would you rather have a trim scheme that's uniquely yours and doesn't look like every other trainer at the flying
field? Toss our decals and go wild. The all-white base is the perfect "canvas" for stars, sunbursts, and rainbows. Or, go with
logos from your favorite sports team, drink, motorcycle, or company. You're only limited by your imagination.

R/C Airplane ARF
Over 9 Foot Wingspan!
The Rascal 110 ARF is a giant size sport model that provides outstanding flying characteristics using a wide range of
power systems. Whether you prefer glow engines, gas engines, or electric power, the Rascal's classic good looks and
dream-come-true flying characteristics will quickly make it your favorite R/C airplane. "Smooth", "Solid",
"Comfortable", "Gentle as a Cub and aerobatic", "a Cub on steroids", are some of the words Rascal pilots use to describe
flying a "110".
Streamlining and a high performance airfoil allow the Rascal 110 to do aerobatics that are impossible for most high wing
airplanes. Breeze through inside and outside loops, slow rolls, point rolls, inverted flight, cuban 8s, and even knife edge
flight. The light wing loading of the Rascal 110 also makes it a versatile workhorse. Float flying, banner or glider tow,
onboard photography and video (several universities and the military are using them), parachute drop, night flying with
add-on lights, and just about any other load carrying task is easy for the giant Rascal 110.
The Rascal 110 is a beautifully handcrafted all-wood ARF. Assembly is fast and simple. All the parts were CAD-drawn,

R/C Airplane Kit
Kit No. SIGRC67
When the first SIG KADET came out in 1972, it was the only airplane on the market totally designed from
the ground up for learning to fly R/C. It quickly became the airplane of choice for new R/C flyers at many
model clubs! Since then, thousands of new pilots have successfully learned to fly R/C with a KADET! It’s
gentle flying characteristics made it a legend in its own time. This KADET LT-40 blends the perfect
aerodyamics of the original SIG KADET with a more modern, simpler, and much faster building type of
construction. This is the easiest building KADET kit yet! Every major part of this kit has been pre-shaped,
sawn, die-cut, laser-cut, routed, or whatever it takes to make it ready-to-install right out of the box. A photoillustrated assembly manual takes you through every step of construction and pre-flight.
Like all SIG KADETS, the KADET LT-40 behaves perfectly in flight, with true hands off stability on all
axis. If the student pilot gets disoriented, simply let go of the control sticks and the LT-40 will recover itself
and return to level flight within seconds. Because the LT-40 is bigger than the average .40 size trainer, it
has a much lighter wing loading, which lets it fly slower! Slower speed gives the student pilot more time
to think and react to what the model is doing, thus making it easier to learn to fly R/C.

THE ORIGINAL “HANDS OFF” TRAINER
We believe that first attempts at R/C flying should be with an inherently stable model that flies slow enough to
give the student pilot time to think and react. The original KADET SENIOR is an ultra-light weight design that
flies so slowly and gently that just about anyone can handle it on their very first try! If the student pilot gets confused, merely let go of the control sticks and the KADET SENIOR will recover itself and return back to level
flight. This is the original 3-channel KADET SENIOR build-it-yourself kit. Thousands of new R/C pilots have
learned to fly with this legendary airplane.
The KADET SENIOR is the result of Hall of Fame designer Claude McCullough's 50+ years in the model airplane hobby. Everything about the SENIOR has been designed to make it the easiest to fly trainer in the world.
It has all of the features that a student pilot needs to be successful.

A COMPACT “HANDS OFF” TRAINER
This compact version of the KADET SENIOR is designed for modelers who have a small car or apartmentsize workshop. The KADET SENIORITA features the same forgiving flight characteristics of the larger
SENIOR, but in a smaller package. Both the KADET SENIOR and KADET SENIORITA are also popular
with experienced fliers who are tired of the nerve racking panic that can accompany a faster model. The
KADET SENIORITA flies so slowly and gently that just about anyone can handle it on their very first try!
If the student pilot gets confused, merely let go of the control sticks and the KADET SENIORITA will recover itself and return back to level flight. Pilots of all skill levels get a real charge out of the pure flying pleasure that a KADET can provide. It's the perfect model for out-of-the-rut, pure fun flying. Slide in for a main

KADET LT-25 KIT
Since its introduction, the SIG KADET LT-40 has become the R/C trainer of choice at many club fields, Not long
after its introduction, we started getting requests for a smaller version of the same airplane. So the compact version of the LT-40 was born - the SIG KADET LT-25. As you would expect, the new LT-25 inherits all the same
gentle flying characteristics of the other legendary SIG KADETS. It has the same light wing loading, which
allows it to fly slow enough to give the student pilot time to think and react. It has the same "hands off" stability
on all axis. If the student pilot gets disoriented, simply let go of the sticks and the LT-25 will recover and return
to level flight within seconds.
In addition, the new KADET LT-25 has a couple of features that are "firsts" for any SIG KADET.
• It's the smallest "full-house" 4-channel KADET we've ever produced with ailerons, elevator, rudder, and throttle control standard.
• It has a taildragger landing gear! In the interest of keeping the flying weight of this little gem as light as possible, we've elected to go with the simplicity of a taildragger landing gear. With a wide-stance main gear and a
shallow angle of attack on the ground, the LT-25 takes off and lands just as easily as most tricycle gear models.
• Last, but not least, it's the first SIG KADET that is all laser cut! The CAD drawn plans and CNC (computer
controlled) laser cutter insure the parts fit perfectly. You've never built a kit that went together this good!

FOUR-STAR 40 KIT
You've learned all you can flying your first trainer and you still have a perfectly good .40 size engine
and 4-channel radio. Now is the time to step up and start having some real fun. SIG's Four-Star 40 has
been the "second airplane" of choice for thousands of modelers since its introduction in 1989. With its
low semi-symmetrical wing and light wing loading, the Four-Star 40 takes you to the next level, with
all the free-style aerobatics and whoop-dee-doos your thumbs can conjure up. When developing the
FOUR-STAR 40, there were two main design goals. First, of course, was impeccable flight performance in the tradition of all SIG kits. Second, it had to be ultra-simple to build without looking like a
"box with wings". The FOUR-STAR 40 shines in both respects! Give it a try - we think you'll give
this kit a "4 star" rating!

R/C Airplane Kits
Since 1957, thousands of modelers have been delighted with the slow flying, yet fully aerobatic, flight performance of the
original ASTRO-HOG. As the old saying goes, "NOTHING FLIES LIKE A HOG!". Well, now you can have the same
easy flying aerobatic performance in a sport biplane design - the SIG HOG-BIPE. Just like the ASTRO-HOG, the HOGBIPE performs any maneuver in the book, yet flies slow enough to let you enjoy it. This is barnstorming at its best!
The HOG-BIPE kit is fast building and easy to assemble. Computer accurate parts that fit together perfectly make it easy
for the average builder to successfully assemble an accurate, straight flying biplane. The large photo-illustrated assembly
manual takes you through every step of the assembly.

thing Flies Like A Hog . . .
The Airplane That "WROTE THE BOOK" On R/C Aerobatics. This legendary model got R/C aerobatics off the ground in
1957. As the first successful low-wing R/C model, it swept the top four places at the '58 Nationals and pioneered the unlimited aerobatic capability, we take for granted today. Obviously, the ASTRO-HOG is no longer competitive with today's
high-tech pattern ships, but it does offer the modern sport flier amazing aerobatic performances in a super stable, easy-tofly model. The ASTRO-HOG will perform any maneuver in the book, yet it flies slow enough to let you enjoy it! So gentle, some people have used it as a primary trainer. Ideal for 4-stroke engines! SEALANE KIT
Taxi gently away from the dock and head for open water. Increase power and watch the water spray behind you as the hull
lifts smoothly off the water. Gentle, graceful, responsively solid. Then turn-it-on; loops, rolls, even inverted flight! You
would never think this was a seaplane. Settle back for a smooth touchdown into the sunset and taxi back to the dock with
solid, positive control, even in crosswinds. The Sealane features a strong one-piece removable wing allowing easy access
to all your radio gear. The high mounted forward facing engine pylon keeps your engine high and dry. While the Sealane
is no landlubber, SIG includes instructions for
optional installation of a fixed gear and tail
dragger landing gear. Simply add the main
and tail wheel assemblies (not included),
detach the tip floats, and burn up the
skies at your local flying field. The
Sealane is the perfect choice for your
first-time seaplane. The Sealane builds
quickly with precision laser cut wood parts;
full size rolled plans and illustrated assembly
manual leaving nothing to the imagination,
even for the novice builder. Includes a

ULTIMATE FUN FLY KIT
The SIG Ultimate Fun Fly was modeled after one of the most recognized biplanes on the air show circuit today, the Ultimate
10-300. This biplane has captured the imagination of many modelers with its distinctive looks and outstanding flight performance. Following in the footsteps of the popular SIG Fazer, the Ultimate Fun Fly is an easy to build all wood design
with a profile fuselage and traditional build-up balsa wings. The flight performance of the Ultimate Fun Fly is AWESOME!
Super tight loops, lightning fast rolls, flat spins, knife edge flight, and hovering are just a few of the maneuvers, that this
model can perform. The CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) drawn plans, computer generated tooling, and laser cut parts
ensures the modeler that all the parts will fit precisely the way they were intended. The laser cutter has allowed us to design
the parts in this model to greatly simplify its construction. One other benefit of the laser cutter is that all the critical alignment holes in the cabane and interplane struts are pre-cut allowing the wings to be set at their proper incidences during
assembly.

WONDER KIT
Wonder how it flies? Wonder IF it flies? Your first adrenalin pumping, action packed, speed blurred WONDER flight will
answer those questions in a big hurry! The WONDER is best described as a very fast, go-where-you-point-it, turn-it-quickor-it'll-be-gone kind of plane, designed for hot-thumbed R/C pilots. With an .09 or a .10 size engine, the WONDER is actually a very nimble, aerobatic, smooth flying sport plane, but with a snarlin' .15 or .19 up front, it's a hand launched hot rod!
Landings are no sweat thanks to the thick symmetrical airfoil and the light wing loading. C'mon, shake things up and take
a walk on the wild side of sport flying. Fly a WONDER.
CAUTION: The Wonder is not recommended
for beginners or the faint of heart. It’s FAST!

KOUGAR MARK II KIT
If you are looking for an R/C model that is easy to build and exciting to fly, the KOUGAR is for you! This sleek jet-style
airplane has a fully symmetrical wing section for smooth pattern-like aerobatics. The KOUGAR will do every stunt in the

stability. Built-in wing "washout" eliminates tip stalling, enabling the KOUGAR to be slowed down to a walk for realistic
nose-high landings. The KOUGAR is highly recommended as an introduction to low-wing flying and for beginning pattern competitors. Don't let the KOUGAR's racy lines worry you. Construction of this sport model is simple and straight
forward. The load-carrying and equipment-carrying portion of the fuselage is basic balsa box structure. Once that is built,
you add a molded plastic fuselage top, a molded clear plastic canopy, and a molded plastic cowling, to give the KOUGAR
its modern jet-style shaped. The wings are white foam core with 1/16 in. thick balsa sheeting. Tail surfaces are sheet balsa.

Kougar “early Thunderbird”
color scheme
NOTES ON KOUGAR COLOR SCHEMES:
Since the KOUGAR is a sport model, not a scale model, no decals are
included in the kit. However, after numerous requests, SIG does have
available several decal sheets that make it easy for you to decorate your
KOUGAR to look like the world famous U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.
You can duplicate either the early period silver Thunderbird scheme or
the white "team number" color scheme that the Thunderbirds use today.

R/C Airplane Kits
The yellow Piper J-3 Cub is one of aviation's genuine classics. More than 20,000 Cubs were built between 1937 - 1947,
and for years after that, it was the most commonly seen airplane at airports all over the country. Forgiving flight characteristics, light wing loading, and hands-off stability made it perfect for America's weekend pilots. The Cub design is ideal
for R/C flying and makes an excellent first-time 1/4-scale building project.

Hazel Sig’s World Famous Clipped Wing Piper Cub
In 1969, Hazel Sig, co-founder of SIG Mfg. Co., rebuilt a standard 1941 Piper J-3 Cub for aerobatic flying. To increase
performance, 40" was clipped off each wing panel and the engine reworked to produce 75 h.p. The entire framework was
rebuilt and a dazzling sunburst paint job was applied with SIG Supercoat Dope. Over the years, Hazel progressed to more
powerful airplanes for her aerobatics, but none ever captured the affections of modelers worldwide as has the Clipped Wing
Cub. In the air, the Clipped Wing Cub is smooth, stable, and responsive as the big one. Basic aerobatic maneuvers such
as loops, rolls, spins, and snaps are easy. A beautiful model of a truly special airplane! Available in two sizes - 1/4-scale
(86” wingspan) and 1/6 scale (56” wingspan).

at any speed, the SIG 1/5th scale Cub re-creates the real thing. This kit has the option of being built as either the full-span
Cub or the more agile "clipped wing" version.
This kit can be built as either the Piper J-3 Cub or the "Clipped Wing" version.
Twin-Engine Electric Airplane
The SIG Dornier Do 217 kit is a semi-scale model of one of Germany’s most interesting and deadly night fighters of WWII. This
very nice flying twin-engine electric design is loaded with features that make its construction straight forward and easy. Using
the radio system and power recommendations provided in the fully illustrated assembly manual, the Do 217 model will provide
superb 4-channel capability with power to spare. It can slow down to scale-like speeds and
is capable of all the typical maneuvers, such as big,
graceful loops, military type rolls, stall turns, etc.
Landings are easy with that big wing and dual fins

R/C Airplane Kits
The SIGs Pioneers of Flight series are ultra-light semi-scale R/C models of some of the most colorful and historically
important aircraft of the pioneer period of aviation. All three kits feature a super light built-up balsa structure, which is
then covered with "Lite-Span" heat-shrinkable covering material (included). The ready-to-fly weight of these models
is under 8 oz., giving them a flight speed that is incredibly slow and scale-like. These models are recommended for
indoor flying or outdoors in no-wind conditions.
The Demoiselle features a unique fully operational flying
stab and rudder tail unit, just like the original airplane.

The RISER 100 is an excellent choice for the newcomer who wants to get started in soaring, or for the already experienced "glider
guider" who wants a relaxing, easy-to-build "floater". The RISER 100's modified Eppler 205 airfoil and 1000 sq. in. of wing area
gives you the ability to fly in nearly any weather. The RISER 100 provides great "hang-time" in light lift conditions, yet has
respectable penetration when the wind comes up. Rugged construction allows more time at the flying field and less time in the shop.

RADIO CONTROL? The Herr 100 Series models (kit numbers begin with
HRR1), shown on the next 3 pages, are all originally designed as free flight
rubber power aircraft, and as such they fly beautifully. These were the first
ever laser-cut model airplane kits on the market. Now in this day of miniature radio gear and brushless outrunner electric motors they are enjoying a
new life as radio control subjects. Many experienced modelers are having a
great time converting these airplanes to R/C flying. The light structures and
stable flight characteristics make these airplanes excellent subjects for R/C.
Unfortunately, at this time none of these model kits include instructions for
converting to R/C, however there are many excellent “build threads” in the
online modeling forums. Search on your favorite forum for the airplane, and
you will most likely find excellent help and instruction.

With today’s electric ducted fans spinning at over 30,000 rpm’s, having a balanced fan has
never been more critical. At these high rpm’s, a difference in just a few tenths of a gram
can lead to excessive vibration and a reduction in thrust. The SIG Fan Balancer is a
precision, high-tech instrument capable of detecting the smallest out of balance
situation. It all starts with the shaft. The shaft on the Fan Balancer is made from
high-speed steel (the same steel used for drill bits and machine tools)
manufactured to a straightness of 1/1,000 mm and utilizing precision
machine ground ends. Then the shaft is suspended between two
powerful rare earth magnets. All that would make for a good fan
balancer, but we also added an adjustment screw so that you can
precisely adjust the spacing so that only ONE end of the
shaft is touching a magnet. This provides for the least
amount of possible friction. Your electric ducted fan
model airplane is a marvel of model engineering.
Shouldn’t your fan balancer be just as sophisticated? Also
does a fantastic job of balancing small propellers.
Order No.: SIGSH903 - Fan Balancer KIT
For minimal
friction, only one
end of the shaft
touches the magnet
SURFACE INDICATOR GAUGE KIT
You’ve finally finished your dream model. The center of gravity is right on, the prop is balanced, and all the controls
are hooked up and functioning perfectly. But wait, what about the control throws? Every R/C airplane flies best with
a specific amount of travel for each control surface. Making sure that your model matches the
designer’s recommedations can turn a twitchy, nerve-racking handful of a airplane into a pussycat. Coming in on
a dead-stick, final approach is not the time to find out that you don’t have enough elevator control throw
to keep the nose up!
The SIG Surface Indicator Gauge enables you to accurately measure and set your control surface
throws. It works either in a vertical direction for rudders or in a horizontal direction for elevators, ailerons and flaps. The control throws are easily measured
on the laser-inscribed gauge, in inch measurements on one side
or metric on the other. Available in two sizes. The smaller size
is for control surfaces up to 3-1/2 in. wide, typically found on
planes up to about .60 size. The larger size is for control surfaces measuring up to 6 in. wide, including models as large as
1/4 scale.
Order No.: SIGSH901 Surface Indicator Gauge, Small
Order No.: SIGSH902 Surface Indicator Gauge, Large

SPECIAL SELECTION OF SIG BALSA
Special selection of balsa sheets for weight or grain type is available on a limited basis, depending on our supply at the time of your
order.
Special selection of balsa sheets for WEIGHT is available in SOFT, MEDIUM, or HARD categories. The softer wood will be lighter in
weight; the harder wood will be heavier. Standard categories of balsa weight in the hobby industry is as follows:
SOFT = 6 to 9 lbs. per cu. ft.
MEDIUM = 9 to 12 lbs. per cu. ft.
HARD = 12 to 16 lbs. per cu. ft.
Balsa sheets can also be specially selected for A-GRAIN or C-GRAIN. Description of balsa grain types is a few pages further back of
this catalog. Standard SIG balsa sheets (not special selection) are random A, B, and C grain (mostly B-GRAIN, the most common type).
Special selection for weight or grain type is very time consuming and requires an additional fee:
Fee for Grain Selection: $0.25 per sheet
Fee for Weight Selection: $0.35 per sheet

SIG Plywood & Dowels
SIG Aircraft Grade Plywood is the finest quality plywood available for model building. Imported from
Finland and Italy, the plywood is actually produced in metric thicknesses (millimeters), which have been
converted to the nearest inch dimensions for our use. Due to the nature of thin plywood sheets, it is
impossible for us to guarantee that every sheet will be perfectly flat and straight. In most cases, plywood
parts cut from these sheets can easily be straightened as they are glued into the model structure.

SIG Basswood
SIG BASSWOOD
Basswood is a native North American hardwood with fine grain and very consistent density. Easy to cut and
easy to sand, basswood is ideal for many hobby and craft projects. SIG cuts only the highest quality clear
basswood from the forests of the northern United States and Canada. Basswood's straight grain makes it
ideal for wing spars, longerons, and numerous other model airplane parts where additional strength is needed. Also the wood of choice for wood carvers. Good acoustic properties also make basswood popular for
electric guitar bodies. Basswood can be stained or painted using any common type of wood finish.

SIG - THE MOST FAMOUS NAME IN BALSA!
Like most kids who grew up in the 1920s and '30s, Glen Sigafoose was an avid builder and flyer of model airplanes. His interest in airplanes was hereditary. His father Arthur Sigafoose was an Iowa aviation pioneer who flew hang gliders as early as 1910. Glen's first
model airplanes were made of bamboo and tissue. He did not see his first piece of balsa wood until the early 1930s. During his high
school days Glen developed several model airplanes which he sold through small ads in model magazines. He also became an avid
motorcyle rider and mechanic.
Fast forward to the late 1940s when Glen was working as a printer / linotype operator / maintenance man in the local newspaper office.
Glen and his wife Hazel, who also worked at the newspaper office, operated their own side business selling and servicing Indian motorcycles. Their matched pair of Indian Chief motorcycles were their only form of transportation year round. They didn't own a car until
years later.
In addition to the motorcycles, both Glen and Hazel loved to build model airplanes of their own design. Without a hobby shop near them,
they were frustrated that balsa wood sheets and sticks could not be purchased by mail. They guessed that there must be many other
builders in small towns without hobby shops facing the same problem. So they purchased 120 board feet of raw balsa wood planks and
began cutting it in their basement workshop into the sizes used by model builders. They took out an ad in Model Airplane News magazine, offering free information about their cut balsa wood and were surprised when they got no response. After thinking it over, a second ad was taken out offering the same information for the price of a dime. Then the requests for the balsa began to come in. After
five years of working nights and weekends, Glen and Hazel were able to buy a building and quit their day jobs at the local newspaper.
That was the birth of Sig Mfg. Co., the most famous name in balsa.

Facts About Balsa
Model airplanes are no different than any other type of flying machine,
large or small - THE LIGHTER IT IS BUILT, THE BETTER IT WILL
FLY! With that in mind, it is easy to understand why balsa wood has
been the standard material for model airplane construction since it
first became readily available in the U.S. in the late 1920s. Its outstanding strength-to-weight ratio enables hobbyists to construct
durable models that fly in a totally realistic manner. Balsa also
absorbs shock and vibration well and can be easily cut, shaped, and
glued with simple hand tools.
and are covered by the litter of the jungle. There they lay and accumulate until one day there is an opening in the jungle canopy large
enough for the sun's rays to strike the jungle floor and start the seeds
growing. Wherever there was an opening, made either by a farmer or
by another tree dying, balsa will spring up as thick as grass. A farmer
is often hard put to keep his food plot clear of balsa. As the new balsa
trees grow, the strongest will become predominate and the weaker
trees will die.
WHERE DOES BALSA WOOD COME FROM? Balsa trees grow
naturally in the humid rain forests of Central and South America. Its
natural range extends south from Guatemala, through Central
America, to the north and west coast of South America as far as
Bolivia. However, the small country of Ecuador, on the western coast
of South America, is the primary source of model aircraft grade balsa
in the world. Balsa needs a warm climate with plenty of rainfall and
good drainage. For that reason, the best stands of balsa usually
appear on the high ground between tropical rivers. Ecuador has the
ideal geography and climate for growing balsa trees. The scientific
name for balsa wood is ochroma lagopus. The word balsa itself is
Spanish meaning raft, in reference to its excellent floatation qualities.
In Ecuador it is known as Soya, meaning buoy.
HOW DOES BALSA WOOD GROW? There is no such thing as
entire forests of balsa trees. They grow singly or in very small, widely
scattered groups in the jungle. For hundreds of years, balsa was actually considered a weed tree. They reproduce by growing hundreds of
long seed pods, which eventually open up and, with the help of the
wind, scatter thousands of new seeds over a large area of the jungle.
Each seed is airborne on its own small wisp of down, similar to the
way dandelion seeds spread. The seeds eventually fall to the ground
A stand of young balsa trees.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE A BALSA TREE TO GROW? Balsa
trees grow very rapidly (like all pesky weeds). Six months after germination, the tree is about 1-1/2 inches in diameter and 10-12 feet tall!
In 6 to 10 years the tree is ready for cutting, having reached a height
of 60 to 90 feet tall and a diameter of 12 to 45 inches. If left to continue growing, the new wood being grown on the outside layers
becomes very hard and the tree begins to rot in the center.
Unharvested, a balsa tree may grow to a diameter of 6 feet or more,
but very little usable lumber can be obtained from a tree of this size.
The balsa leaf is similar in shape to a grape leaf,
only a lot bigger. When the tree is young, these leaves measure as
much as four feet across. They become progressively smaller as the
tree grows

older, until they are about 8-10 inches across. Balsa is one of the few
trees in the jungle which has a simple leaf shape. This fact alone
makes the balsa tree stand out in the jungle.
Rough cut balsa boards at the sawmill.
Facts About Balsa
THE PERFECT NURSE! Nature designed the balsa tree to be a
"nurse tree" which would protect the slower-growing species of trees
from the scorching jungle sun during their critical early years. For
instance, in an area of the jungle that has been ravaged by a tropical
storm or other natural disaster, the balsa trees will quickly sprout and
begin to shoot up to impressive heights in a very short time. Their fast
growth, and the extra large leaves they have in their early years, provide shade to the young seedlings of the slower-growing forest giants.
By the time the seedlings are established enough to take care of
themselves, the balsa tree is beginning to die. The balsa tree's rapid
growth, fast spreading crown of first very large and gradually smaller
leaves, and it's relatively short life span were intended to make it the
"perfect nurse" in the jungle ecosystem.
At the saw mill the raw balsa is first rough cut into large boards, then
carefully kiln dried, and finally packed into bales for shipment to the
U.S. via ocean freighter. Final cutting and finishing of our model aircraft balsa is done right here at the SIG factory. As a result of the
balsa tree's fast growth cycle, both the quality and lightness of the
lumber obtained from a balsa tree can vary enormously depending
upon the tree's age at the time of cutting.
WHY IS BALSA WOOD SO LIGHT? The secret to balsa wood's
lightness can only be seen with a microscope. The cells are big and
very thin walled, so that the ratio of solid matter to open space is as
small as possible. Most woods have gobs of heavy, plastic-like
cement, called lignin, holding the cells together. In balsa, lignin is at a
minimum. Only about 40% of the volume of a piece of balsa is solid
substance. To give a balsa
tree the strength it needs to stand in the jungle, nature pumps each
balsa cell full of water until they become rigid - like a car tire full of air.
Green balsa wood typically contains five times as much water by
weight as it has actual wood substance, compared to most hardwoods which contain very little water in relation to wood substance.
Green balsa wood must therefore be carefully kiln dried to remove
most of the water before it can be sold. Kiln drying is a tedious two
week process that carefully removes the excess water until the moisture content is only 6%. Kiln drying also kills any bacteria, fungi, and
insects that may be in the raw balsa wood.
Nature’s “Nurse Tree”.
HOW ARE BALSA TREES HARVESTED? While nature intended
the balsa tree to be a short lived nursemaid, mankind eventually discovered that it was an extremely useful resource. The real start of the
balsa business was during World War I, when the allies were in need
of a plentiful substitute for cork. The only drawback to using balsa
was, and still is, the backbreaking work that is necessary to get it out
of the jungle. Because of the way the individual balsa trees are scattered throughout the jungles, it has never been possible to use mass
production logging procedures and equipment. The best way to log
balsa trees is to go back to the methods of Paul Bunyan - cut them
down with an axe or saw, haul them to the nearest river by ox team,
tie them together into rafts, and then float the rafts of balsa logs down
the river to the saw mill.
Balsa cell structure seen under a microscope.
HOW LIGHT IS KILN DRIED BALSA WOOD? Finished balsa wood,
like you find in model airplane kits, varies widely in weight. Balsa is
occasionally found weighing as little as 4 Ibs. per cu. ft. On the other
hand, you can also find balsa which will weigh 24 Ibs. or more per cu.
ft. However, the general run of commercial balsa for model airplanes
will weigh between 6 pounds to 16 Ibs. per cu. ft. Eight to twelve
pound balsa is considered medium or average weight, and is the most
plentiful. Six pound or less is considered "contest grade", which is
very rare and sometimes even impossible to obtain.
Raw balsa logs at the sawmill.
IS BALSA THE LIGHTEST WOOD IN THE WORLD? No! Most people are surprised to hear that botanically, balsa wood is only about the
third or fourth lightest wood in the world. However, all the woods
which are lighter than balsa are terribly weak and unsuitable for any
practical use. The very lightest varieties don't really resemble wood at
53
Facts About Balsa
all, as we commonly think of it, but are more like a tree-like vegetable
that grows in rings, similar in texture to an onion. It is not until balsa
is reached that there is any sign of real strength combined with lightness. In fact, balsa wood is often considered the strongest wood for
its weight in the world. Pound for pound it is stronger in some respects
than pine, hickory, or even oak (see chart below).

NOTE ABOUT CHART: The strength of balsa varies in direct relation
to its density or weight - the heavier the wood, the stronger it is.
The above chart was designed with 10 Ib./cu. ft. balsa as the median.
In other words, balsa at 10 Ibs./cu. ft. has been tested given a value
of 100. The other woods were then tested in the same way and given
a figure that is numerically in proportion. By comparing the relative
strength figures in the chart, it will be seen that balsa is as strong or
stronger, pound for pound, than most of the species shown.
SELECTING BALSA FOR MODEL BUILDING: Because of the
nature of balsa, two pieces of wood with the exact same dimensions
may vary quite a bit in weight. When you select the pieces you want
for our project, you should keep their final use in mind. Logically one
should select the lightest grades for the lightly stressed parts of the
model (nose blocks, wingtip blocks, fill-ins, etc.), and the heavier
grades for important load bearing parts of the structure (spars, fuselage stringers, etc.).
SIG Mfg. Co. has been producing model grade balsa wood
since 1951. In this early photo founder Glen Sigafoose
(left) inspects and grades finished balsa sheets.
54
When describing the weight of balsa wood, the standard unit of measure is POUNDS PER CUBIC FOOT (lbs./cu.ft).
To give you an idea how much common sizes of balsa can vary in
weight depending upon the density of raw stock it was cut from, the
following three charts have been developed. They show the actual
weight in ounces of each size piece when it is cut from 6, 8, 10, 12,
14, or 16 lb./cu. ft. stock. For example, in the first chart for BALSA
SHEETS we see that a 1/16" x3" x 36" sheet cut from 10 lbs./cu. ft.
stock will weigh approximately .625 ounces. The same size sheet cut
from 14 Ibs./cu.ft. stock will weigh about .875 ounces.
A knife or razor blade will work well for cutting balsa sheets and sticks
up to 3/16" thick. Use a razor saw for sizes over thicker than 3/16".
Always keep replacement blades on hand - blades do wear out and a
dull blade can make it impossible to do a good job.
Facts About Balsa
COMMON MODELER'S TOOLS FOR CUTTING AND SHAPING
BALSA WOOD: Balsa is a very "friendly" wood to work with - light,
soft, and easily worked into so many things. You don't need heavyduty power saws and sanders like you would if working with a hardwood. In fact, even with an extensive power shop at their disposal, the
professional model builders here at the SIG factory find that they still
rely primarily on 4 or 5 simple hand tools for the majority of their work.
If you are just starting out in the model airplane hobby, here are the
tools that they recommend that you get:
YOU WILL ALSO NEED SANDING BLOCKS: In addition to the cutting tools, you will need an assortment of different size sanding
blocks. These are indispensable tools for model construction. You can
buy ready-made sanding blocks or make your own. The most often
used general-purpose sanding block in our model shop is made simply by wrapping a full 9" x 11" sheet of sandpaper around a 3/4" x3" x
11" hardwood or plywood block. Use three screws along one edge to
hold the overlapped ends of the sandpaper in place. Use 80 grit garnet sandpaper on the block during general construction.

Facts About Balsa
Another handy sanding block to have can be made by gluing 80 grit
garnet sandpaper onto a 24" or 36" long piece of aluminum channel
stock. Most hardware stores carry a rack of aluminum in various sizes
and shapes. This long sanding block is very helpful for shaping leading and trailing edges, and other large pieces, accurately.
Last but not least, glue sandpaper onto different sizes of scrap plywood sticks and round hardwood dowels. These are handy for working in tight places and for careful shaping where a big sanding block
is too hard to control.
We like to use craft glue in a spray can (like 3M “77”® Spray
Adhesive) for gluing the sandpaper on our homemade sanding tools.
BALSA GRAIN ID. CHART - LEARN TO IDENTIFY ALL THREE GRAIN TYPES
In selecting balsa sheets for use in your model, it is important to consider
the way the grain runs through the sheet as well as the weight of the
sheet. The grain direction actually controls the rigidity or flexibility of a
balsa sheet more than the density does. For example, if the sheet is cut
from the log so that the tree's annular rings run across the thickness of
the sheet (A-grain, tangent cut), then the sheet will be fairly flexible edge
to edge. In fact, after soaking in water some tangent cut sheets can be
completely rolled into a tube shape without splitting. If on the other hand
the sheet is cut with the annular rings running through the thickness of
the sheet (C-grain, quarter grain), the sheet will be very rigid edge to
edge and cannot be bent without splitting. When the grain direction is
less clearly defined (B-grain, random cut), the sheet will have intermediate properties between A and C grain. Naturally, B-grain is the most
common and is suitable for most jobs. The point to bear in mind is that
whenever you come across pure A-grain or C-grain sheets, learn where
to use them to take best advantage of their special characteristics. The
following chart illustrates the 3 basic grain types for sheet balsa and lists
the most appropriate uses for each.
A-GRAIN sheet balsa has long fibers that show up as long grain lines. It is
very flexible across the sheet and bends around curves easily. Also warps
easily. Sometimes called "tangent cut".
DO: Use for sheet covering rounded fuselages and wing leading edges,
planking fuselages, forming tubes, strong flexible spars, HL glider fuselages.
DON'T: Use for sheet balsa wings or tail surfaces, flat fuselage sides, ribs,
or formers.
B-GRAIN sheet balsa has some of the qualities of both type A and type C.
Grain lines are shorter than type A, and it feels stiffer across the sheet. It is a
general purpose sheet and can be used for many jobs. Sometimes called
"random cut".
DO: Use for flat fuselage sides, trailing edges, wing ribs, formers, planking
gradual curves, wing leading edge sheeting.
DON'T: Use where type A or type C will do a significantly better job.
C-GRAIN sheet balsa has a beautiful mottled appearance, it is very stiff
across the sheet and splits easily. But when used properly, it helps to build the
lightest, strongest models. Most warp resistant type. Sometimes called "quarter grain".
DO: Use for sheet balsa wings and tails, flat fuselage sides, wing ribs, formers, trailing edges. Best type for HL glider wings and tails.
DON'T: Use for curved planking, rounded fuselages, round tubes, HL glider
fuselages, or wing spars.
