Hema 4WD Maps App User Guide
Getting Started
Please note, this documentation specifically relates to the Hema 4WD Maps app
for iPad and iPhone, however the concepts and key details are equally applicable
to all of the Hema branded apps available on iOS devices:



4WD Maps app
Hema USA RoadAtlas
Hema NZ RoadAtlas
When you first run the application, it prompts you to enable the phone's location
service. This is used to identify the best available free basemap for your location.
You must enable the location service and provide a connection to the internet to
allow the application to download the initial basemap.
PLEASE NOTE
If you are using the app on a wi-fi only model iPad, the iPad is relying on
the wi-fi network to inform the location service about the approximate
location which you are currently in. There is nothing that the app can do
about this situation.
If the wi-fi network does NOT report the approximate location which you
are in, the map screen may stubbornly refuse to change. In this case, the
best option is to switch to a network provider which WILL provide a
decent (or at least approximate) location which the app on the iPad can
use to start correctly.
An example would be to use your smart mobile phone to create a wi-fi
hotspot which the iPad could use to gain access. This normally provides
location information immediately.
This should only be required the first time you run the app. The app
needs to get some idea of it's initial location when first started up.
If you are using your mobile phone as a wi-fi hot spot, when done, we
advise you to turn off this feature to avoid incurring excess data costs.
If Location Services are not switched on you need to switch them on, both
globally, and for the specific app(s). If you see the prompt shown above, tap the
Settings button to go to the Location Services settings page on your ipad.
You can check the settings under the Location Services section of the Settings
app on your device.

Hema 4WD Maps App User Guide
It is faster if you are on a WiFi network to download map data, but any internet
connection will work.
The app consists of two main pages, the Main Page, and the Flipside Page.
Examples are shown below:
Main Page & Flipside Page
Main Page
The Main Page displays the current map, with your position shown by an indicator
in the centre of the screen.
If the device has a built-in GPS (or you have a valid connection to an external
Bluetooth GPS device), your location is shown as a red circle with cross hairs on
the map.
2
Hema 4WD Maps App User Guide
The centre of the position marker circle flashes to indicate when the position is
updated, usually every second or two if there is good GPS satellite reception.
If the position marker circle turns grey, it means that GPS reception has been
lost.
The estimated accuracy of your GPS position is displayed on the Flipside Page.
You get to the Flipside Page by tapping the arrow button on the bottom
toolbar
You can return to the Main Page by tapping the return arrow button on the
Flipside Page.
While the GPS has a valid position fix, you can tap the GPS Lock Button.
This instantly jumps the current map to show your current location centred
on the Main Page.
As the device moves, the current position is shown and the maps scrolls
automatically to keep the position in the same place on the screen. You can drag
the map to position the GPS Position Indicator to one side, to show more of the
map in the direction of travel.
You can drag the map to reposition the Position Indicator anywhere on the Main
Page, as long as you don't drag it far enough to move the Position Indicator OFF
the page. The indicator will remain locked at the position you dragged it to.
If you drag off the edge of the current map, the GPS is no longer "locked", which
allows you to freely scroll anywhere. Tapping the GPS Lock Button again to reset
to your current location.
When the map is displayed, you can scroll and zoom by tapping and dragging.
Map data is automatically downloaded as you move about the map when using
the base map.
The maps in the 4WD Maps app are raster images, which means the level of
detail in each map is fixed. If you want to see more detail, you have to switch to
a different map.
Main Page Toolbar
The toolbar located along the bottom of the Main Page contains the following
buttons, as shown below:

Customising the Flipside Page data fields
The app is capable of displaying a variety of textual information, and you can
customize the data fields displayed to show the data which is relevant to your
style of use.
Some people just want to record their trip, and see the distance travelled, while
others want to know, for example, velocity-made-good as they are navigating
towards a mark.
There are data fields on the main screen (one in each corner), and a "matrix" of
fields on the flipside screen, and each of these has an independent layout for
portrait and landscape display modes - that is, 4 separate screens of information
that you can customize the layout for.
The default layout selects trip-recorder-related data in portrait mode and
navigation-related data in landscape mode.
6
Hema 4WD Maps App User Guide
To customise the layout of the data
fields on the Flipside Page, tap and
hold on any one of the data fields.
The Data Layout Menu will pop up.

Change Data
Displays a handle on each data
field on the Flipside Page AND the
Main Page as shown below.

Save Layout
Saves the current layout to a
named file on your device. This
described in the section below.

Load Layout
Loads a previously saved layout.
This is described in the section
below.

Restore Default Layout
This will change the data field
layout back to the standard layout
which the app has when first
loaded. You will NOT be prompted
if you select this option. The app
will simply load the default layout
without any further interaction.
Change Data Field Layout
To customize the data on the main screen, overlaid on the map, go to the flip side
and press and hold the screen, and select "Change Data" to start customizing,
then flip back to the main screen. You will see four menu buttons, one in each cell
in the corners of the display, and you can use these to select the data, and
change its size, just as before.
When you are happy with your customized layout, I recommend saving it to a file.
Press-and-hold the flip side, then select Save Layout. If you make a mistake and
want to go back to the default, select Restore Default Layout, or you can load
one of your saved layouts. You could set up one layout optimized for hiking, and
another set up for sailing, or whatever. In the Save Layout dialog, there is a
button to email the layout as an attachment, so you can send it over to your
7
Hema 4WD Maps App User Guide
buddy's iPhone or iPad. You can also manipulate these files (which have the
*.dvtf extension) using itunes file sharing.
When the Change Data option is
selected on the Data Layout Menu, a
handle appears on each data field
location. Tapping the handle shows the
Change Data Menu as shown below,
allowing you to select which specific
data you wish to display in that field.
When you are finished changing your
layout, tap the Done Button to exit
change mode.
Tapping the handle for a field displays
the Change Data Menu, where you
can choose which data you wish to
display in the field which you selected.
The list can be scrolled up and down
using tap-and-drag.
Tap the data you wish to use in the
selected field.
If you do not wish to display any data
in that location, select the Blank
value.
Resizing Data Fields
8
Hema 4WD Maps App User Guide
You can also make a data field larger,
so it spans more than one cell in the
horizontal or vertical direction.
Tap the blue menu button, then press
the black default button that names
the field already programmed in the
cell. The current cell parameter is
usually display at the BOTTOM of the
list of parameters, so you will have to
scroll to the bottom of the list to see it.
The Resize Menu will pop up that
allows you to make the field wider,
narrower, taller or shorter.
The item layout is always set using the
Menu Button at the top-left of the data
field.
Before increasing the size of an item,
its best to make the adjacent cells
blank otherwise you may end up with
messy overlapping data fields.
Do not use this feature unless you
really want to change the layout of the
data fields, and you are confident that
you understand the process.
If it becomes messy, reset the layout
back to defaults and start again.

Routes
You can use routes for planning and measuring distances. Routes can also be
created in the PC application, and uploaded from a PC, and they can be emailed.
Creating A Route
To create a route, you start by creating
a single mark (great journeys start
with a single step after all!)
Tap the Add Mark button
You will see your mark on the
screen with the typical menu and
drag handles. In the example
shown at left, we have created a
mark called "P8".
To start creating the route, tap the
mark's menu button. The Mark
menu will appear.
Tap the Create Route button on
the Mark menu. As soon as you do
this, the mark is converted from a
standalone mark, to a Route Point.
25
Hema 4WD Maps App User Guide
The mark is now shown as a single
blue dot, and the Done button
appears at the top of the screen.
Once you create a route from an
existing mark, the mark is converted
into a Route Point, and changes
appearance to a default blue dot.
The mark's original name will be
replaced, and as it is the first point in
the first route will be called R1P1 (for
obvious reasons)
Tap the map to create additional route
points in your route.
While you are creating the route, you
can scroll and zoom the map, and
change maps.
The Done Button appears at the topleft of the screen. Tapping the Done
Button indicates that you have finished
creating the route, and wish to exit
route create/modify mode.
Don't worry too much if the waypoints
are not exactly where you want them,
as you can tap any route waypoint,
and use its drag handle to shift
position later.
As you create or edit the route, the
total distance of the current route is
displayed at the top of the screen
While you are editing the route,
tapping any of the route waypoints
shows its handle and menu button.
The name of the waypoint and the
distance and bearing from the previous
waypoint are displayed.
Tapping the menu button will display
the Route Waypoint Menu
If you insert at the last waypoint of the
26
Hema 4WD Maps App User Guide
route, it allows you to continue adding
waypoints, extending the route, until
you tap the Done Button.
From the menu you can modify the
point you tapped, or you can perform
functions which affect the entire route,
such as

Delete Route

Follow Route

Edit Route
Editing A Route
Tapping the Edit Route Button on the Route Waypoint Menu will open the Route
Page.

map page, with the current route
shown centred on the map.
The Reverse Route Button will
instantly flip the order of the Route
Waypoints which make up the

Locking The Screen
If you want to see the screen, but you don't want any accidental touches to
interact with the application, press-and-hold the Location Lock button
on the
toolbar for 4 seconds. This will lock the screen, so that the application ignores any
touch events.
When the screen is locked, a small Unlock Button appears at the bottom centre
of the screen.
Tap this button for around 1 second to unlock the screen and return to normal
operation.
The Hema 4WD App has the ability to use the GPS and record a tracklog while the
app is in the background, or even with the screen turned off. You can enable this
option in Settings - GPS Settings.

Using GPS Data
If you have collected some data on the iPhone/iPad, and you want to store or
analyze it on your desktop computer, use the Save/Email File menu command,
give the file a name and touch the email button. This closes 4WD Maps app and
opens the email application with a GPX file attached. Send the email to yourself
and open it on your desktop. Of course, you can just as easily send it to someone
else to share your data.
GPX is an open file format supported by many software tools. The GPX data does
not include the map images. For example you can transfer the data to a Garmin
GPS, to use as a backup for your iPad / iPhone.
You can also upload GPX data from your home computer to the iPad / iPhone.
This could be a route you have planned, or a set of points of interest you have
compiled.
There are also many websites that have trails and so on in GPX format. Just copy
the GPX file to the app using the iTunes file sharing mechanism (just like loading
maps).
The easiest way to get your GPX files across to your devices is to send them to
your email address.
Once you have received the files just Tap-and-Hold the attachment until a menu
pops up, then choose the 4WD Maps app to open the file.
