GIRARD TANKLESS WATER HEATER QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Q: Is the operation of the Girard Tankless Water Heater the same as a tank model water heater?
A: No, the operation is not the same.
The following are the simple operating tips:
1. Set the Mode switch to AUTO and be sure the Power Switch is ON.
2. Turn ON only the HOT water faucet (to a normal flow). DO NOT TURN ON COLD WATER.
3. The water will begin to become warmer when it travels from the water heater to the faucet (usually few
seconds), then you will gradually adjust the hot water flow to the desired hot water temperature. Gradually
REDUCING flow will RAISE the water temperature and gradually INCREASING the flow will LOWER the
hot water temperature.
Please refer to the Operating Instructions in the Owners Manual, review the Quick Operating Tips and Usable Hot
Water sheet (available on our website).
Q: What and where are the controls for the Girard Tankless Water Heater?
A: There are two (2) switches for the Girard Tankless Water Heater; the POWER and the MODE switch.
The POWER switch is located on the water heater. The Water Heater is on the exterior of the RV and is accessed by
opening the Water Heater door. Please note the POWER SWITCH can be left “ON” at all the times while the RV is in
use since there is basically no power draw when there is no demand for hot water.
The MODE SWITCH is located inside the RV (please refer to your RV owner’s manual for the location). The MODE
Switch controls the BTUs or flame level; it has two settings; AUTO and LOW; in the AUTO mode setting the water
heater will automatically switch from HIGH to LOW (or vice versa) flame depending on the incoming water
temperature. Always begin using the water heater in the AUTO MODE setting.
Q: Is there any adjustment to increase or decrease the hot water temperature?
A: Yes. The Girard Tankless Water Heater incorporates a Sensor that will automatically activate the two-stage gas
valve from HI Flame (34,000 BTUs) to LOW Flame (27,000 BTUs) depending on the incoming water temperature.
Girard Products suggest that you begin operating the water heater in the AUTO Mode setting and change to the LOW
setting if the hot water is too hot or if you can’t stabilize the HOT water temperature (water temperature keeps
changing from HOT to COLD).
Q: Why can there be variance in MODE settings?
A: The Girard tankless Water Heater requires an approximate water flow of one (1) gallon per minute for proper
operation. On some RVs a water flow restrictor is used in the shower head and/or on some occasions there is a low
water pressure/flow. If either of these exist it may be possible to get the optimal usable hot water temperature/flow in
the LOW burner setting even with lower incoming water temperatures. Also, there may be a variation of water flow
due to the fresh water source; from the fresh water storage tank (delivered via the RV fresh water pump) or from a
“shore hook-up” as in a campground/RV park which provides a steady water pressure/flow.
Q: Can I have two hot water fixtures/faucets open at the same time and get sufficient hot water?
A: The RVs water system can give various GPM (gallons per minute) flow/pressure depending on whether using the
RV’s water supply/pump or using a shore/campground water supply. So when a second faucet is turned on the hot
water temperature at the first faucet/fixture may be reduced. Depending on the demand and flow from the two open
fixtures/faucets (shower, kitchen sink, bathroom sink or washing machine) it may be necessary to adjust the hot water
flows to achieve the desired hot water temperature. In some situations it may be necessary to operate only one of the
faucet/fixture until the hot water demand is satisfied. In those situations (where you can only get sufficient hot water at
a single faucet/fixture) the Girard Tankless Water Heater will have sufficient hot water for the second faucet/fixtures
hot water demand immediately after the first faucet/fixture is turned off. So no more cold showers or running out of hot
water! Please note that with a tank model water heater you will be out of hot water in a few minutes if you have two
faucets/fixtures demanding hot water. Then you will have a 20 minute (or more) recovery time until you have a new
supply of hot water.
Q: Why do I need 12 Volt power for my Girard Tankless Water Heater?
A: The Girard Tankless Water Heater is built with state of the art electronics which is used for the electronic ignition
(no pilot flame) to power the blower motor which creates the induced draft for optimum operation and efficiency of the
burner and heat exchanger. 12 Volt power is readily available, rechargeable and an efficient power source in all
Recreational Vehicles.
Q: The Girard Tankless Water Heater operates at higher BTUs than the tank model water heater; does that
mean it uses more LP gas?
A: No. The amount of energy or BTUs required to heat water is the same. If you were to boil two pots of water of the
same size, but one on high heat and one on low heat, the amount of BTUs required to boil the water is exactly the same.
The only difference is the amount of time it takes the water to boil. The energy savings is due to the Girard Tankless
Water Heater having higher energy efficiency and only turning on to heat water when there is a demand. Also, the
Girard Tankless Water Heater does not need to heat water to 130 – 140 degrees (F) since it does not have to mix with
cold water to extend the amount of hot water in the storage tank (refer to Usable Hot Water). A the tank model water
heater is less energy efficient and wastes LP gas by continuously heating the water in the tank to maintain the set
temperature which is usually 130 to 140 degrees or higher!

GIRARD TANKLESS WATER HEATER QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Q: What resources are necessary for proper operation?
A: The Girard Tankless Water Heater requires a sufficient supply of 12 Volt power, LP Gas and Fresh Water. If any of
these three resources are not available; the Water Heater will not operate.
Q: How does the Girard Tankless Water Heater work?
A: The Girard Tankless Water Heater works on demand – it only heats water when necessary. When a hot water faucet
is opened or hot water is required for an appliance (washing machine), the heater will sense the demand and heat water
accordingly. When the hot water faucet is turned off or the appliance does not require anymore hot water, the water
heater turns off. There is no wasting of money and energy to keep reheating a storage tank of hot water when it is not
needed so the water heater provides only as much hot water as needed.
Q: What is the difference between a tank model water heater and the Girard Tankless Water Heater?
A: Tank water heaters always have to be “ON” to store and heat water, whereas the Girard Tankless Water Heater is
“OFF” except when there is a demand for hot water. In addition, tank water heaters have a limited supply of hot water
and will run out of hot water while the Girard Tankless Water Heater provides an endless supply of hot water. The only
limitation to endless hot water is a sufficient supply of 12 Volt power, LP Gas and the Fresh Water!
Q: How many models of tankless water heaters does Girard Products manufacture?
A: There is one model (GSWH-1) but there are two (2) versions; one version with (part # 1GWHAF) and one version
without (part # 1GWH) a Winter Use (WUD). The Winter Use Device allows for use of the water heater in winter
conditions. Please note: In order for the Winter Use Device to properly operate (not freeze) in the winter it is necessary
to leave all your RV power sources ON (12V, LP gas and Fresh Water supply and water pump). Also the Water Heater
needs to be “ON” and your RV must be designed for winter use. Consult your RV manufacturer for further information
regarding using your RV in the winter.
Q: If I have the Girard Model GSWH-1 Tankless Water Heater without the Winter Use Device, can it be added
to my Girard Tankless Water Heater?
A: Yes. Girard Products has a Winter Use aftermarket kit that is available from your local RV Dealer or RV
Parts/Service Center. Professional installation is highly recommended to ensure proper operation. Please Note: Your
RV must be designed for use in the winter Contact your RV manufacturer to see if your RV is designed for winter use.
Q: How do I winterize my Girard Tankless Water Heater?
A: Since there is no storage tank you don’t need to bypass your Girard Tankless Water Heater. Refer to your Water
Heater Operation Manual. Girard Products also suggest you read your RV Owner’s Manual, contact your local RV
Dealer/RV Service Center or contact your RV manufacturer to ensure your RV is properly winterized.
Q: Does the Girard Tankless Water Heater design have any approvals or certifications?
A: Yes. The GSWH-1 LP Gas Tankless Water Heater design has been certified by the Canadian Standards Association
(CSA) for installation in Recreational Vehicles and meets ANSI Z21.10.3-2004 Standards. It is approved for
installation and use in Recreational Vehicles in both the United States and Canada.
Q: Does Girard Products sell their Tankless Water Heater online or direct to retail customers?
A: No. Girard Products does not sell the Girard Tankless Water Heater online or retail direct. Currently the Girard
Tankless Water Heater is only available on new model RVs. It will be available for aftermarket purchase in late 2010
through your local RV Dealer or RV Parts/Service Center.
Q: Can the Girard Tankless Water Heater be installed by anyone?
A: No. To insure there are no issues with warranty claims, operation or performance, Girard Products recommends the
water heater installation be performed by a qualified RV Dealer or RV Service Center.
Q: Can the Girard Tankless Water Heater be installed in my home or boat?
A: No. The Girard GSWH-1 Tankless Water Heater is specifically designed and certified (CSA) for installation and use
in a Recreation Vehicle according to the Installation Manual guidelines. Any other form or type of installation will void
the warranty and may create a hazardous condition.
Q: Does Girard Products offer an electric tankless water heater?
A: No. Girard Products offers only an LP Gas model. The main reasons for not offering an electric model tankless
water heater are that it requires a large amount of electricity/energy consumption to heat the water and it usually takes
longer to reach the hot water temperature at start-up. Also, many RV parks/campgrounds only have 30 – 50 AMP
electric service which would not be sufficient for operation of the RVs electric appliances and the operation of an
electric tankless water heater.
Q: What are the size/dimensions of the Girard Tankless Water Heater?
A: The Girard Tankless Water Heater is very compact. The overall dimensions are 12.5” W x 12.5” H x 15.5” D. It will
fit in the smallest cut out opening of the smallest tank model water heater.
Q: What is the weight of the Girard Tankless Water Heater?
A: The weight is 23 pounds “wet” which means with water in the heat exchanger (the heat exchanger holds
approximately one pint of water). It is 50 – 90 pounds lighter than the current tank model water heaters.
Q: What is the warranty on the Girard Tankless Water Heater?
A: Girard Products offer a two (2) year limited warranty on the GSWH-1 Tankless Water Heater. Please refer to the
warranty section on the website for further information.
