Introduction: The RT-11 is a full-featured remote automatic antenna tuner designed for HF (1.8 to
54 MHz) transceivers using between 5 to 125 watts. The tuner uses latching relays in a switched
“L” configuration with 256 capacitor, 256 inductor and Hi/Lo-Z settings to provide over one
hundred and thirty thousand tuning combinations. The tuning range is 0 to 3900 pF and 0 to 20
uH. The “L” network works great with just about any coax fed antenna (dipole, vertical, beam, etc).
Users with long wires can install a balun between the tuner and the antenna. Tuning time is
between 0.1 and 5.0 seconds with the average being about 3.0 seconds.

Interface: The RT-11 has three connections, coax in from the transmitter, coax out to the antenna
and the remote interface. The coax in and out connectors are standard SO-239. The remote
interface is a standard male DB-9 connector. The remote interface will mate with a standard
female DB-9 connector.

Pin 1 provides DC power to the RT-11. The power should be regulated and provide between 11
and 15 volts DC at 250 mA. This line can also be used to provide “power on RF sensing”. If RF is
present when power is applied, the tuner will imitate the tune cycle. This may be helpful for remote
installations where the RT-11 only uses the DC power for control.
Pin 2 is Bypass for the tuner. Once the tuner is inline, it can be bypassed by temporarily grounding
this line. When the line is grounded (held low), the 1.5 LED will be energized. Note: the tuner
utilizes latching relays that will store the last tune position. There is no other way to place the tuner
into bypass except for grounding this pin.
Pin 3 is the Tune line. When it is grounded and RF is present, the tuning process starts. If the line
is grounded, but there is no RF present, the 1.5 and Tune LED will flash to indicate low or no
power. Once the tuning starts, the tune line does not need to be held low. If the line is held low
and the tuning cycle has been completed, the tuning will start again. The Tune line is also used in
the tuner interface for ICOM and Alinco radios.
Pin 4 is the Semi/Auto mode line. When the unit is powered on, it is in the Semi mode. This means
the tuner will not start tuning until the tune line is grounded. In Auto mode, the tuner will start
tuning anytime it sees RF present and the SWR is over 3.0:1. The mode can be toggled by
temporally grounding the Semi/Auto line. When placed in Semi mode, the 1.5 LED will flash
slowly. When placed in Auto mode, the 1.5 LED will flash fast. The 1.5 LED will only flash when
the Semi/Auto line is grounded.
Pin 5 is the Tune LED. Typically a red LED is placed between this pin and ground. The LED will
light while the tuner is in the tuning cycle. An internal resistor provides current limiting.
Pin 6 is the 1.5 LED. Typically a green LED is placed between this pin and ground. The LED will
light when there is RF present and the SWR is below 1.5:1. The LED will flash when there is RF
present and the SWR is between 1.5 and 2.2:1. When there is no RF present, the LED is used for
the Bypass, Auto/Semi and Tune indicator. An internal resistor provides current limiting.
Pin 7 is the Radio out line. This line is used in the tuner interface with ICOM and Alinco radios.
Pin 8 and 9 are Grounds. These lines should be used for the ground of the DC input, ground for
the input lines and ground for the LED outputs.
Operation: There are three basic configurations for the RT-11. The first and easiest is the
interface to an Icom or Alinco radio. This simply requires the installation of the RT-IC or RT-AL

cable. This cable should be installed with all power to the radio and tuner off. The female DB-9
connector should be connected to the DB-9 connector on the RT-11. The Molex connector on the
other end should be plugged into the radio’s tuner port. When the radio is turned on, the tuner will
also come on. On the Icom radio, the Tuner LED will light to show the presence of the tuner.
To operate the tuner, simply press the tuner button on the radio. The radio will change to CW
mode, lower the power to 10 watts and send a tune command to the RT-11. The RT-11 will tune
and send a command to the radio to signify it is finished with tuning. The radio will then revert to
the previous mode and power settings.
The RT-11 cable is typically 15 feet long. For longer lengths, the user can extend the DB-9 cable.
Be sure that all wires are straight through (pin 1 to pin 1, pin 2 to pin 2, etc.).
The second configuration is with the optional RT-11 Remote unit. This unit will provide control
through a 15 foot DB-9 cable. Longer cables can be provided by the user. The remote has front
panel controls for Bypass, Semi/Auto, Tune as well as swr indicator LED for 1.5 and Tune. The
remote has back panel connections for the DB-9 connection to the RT-11 tuner, power input for
the RT-11 tuner and a connection for a radio interface. The power input should be 11 to 15 volts
DC at 250 mA. The radio interface is the same interface that is used in the AT -11MP and can use
the MP-IC or MP-AL cable as an alternate interface to ICOM or Alinco radios.
The remote configuration would typically be used when control of the tuner is needed, but there is
no direct radio interface available. Future interfaces for Kenwood and Yaesu radios are being
investigated.
The third configuration is where the user would provide all interfaces for the RT-11 tuner. The user
can provide a custom interface to their particular installation. The user can provide all or as little as
two wires to the tuner for control. For the two wire control, just power and ground is required. The
tuner has software that will sense RF on power up and tune if RF is present. The user can simply
use a momentary open switch at the control location on the +12 DC power line to control the tuner.
Cycling the DC power with RF present will start the tuning process.
Power Consumption: The RT-11 utilizes latching relays for fast tuning and low power
consumption. During receive, the RT-11 draws about 7 mA. During transmit, the RT-11 draws
about 20 mA. During tuning, the RT-11 will peak at about 250 mA. Since the tuning time is only
about 3 seconds, battery power is a realistic option. Two RECHARGABLE 9-volt NiCad batteries
will supply about 14.4 volts and provide months of normal operating time.
Antennas: The RT-11 will tune a variety of antennas that are fed with coax. The optional RBA-1
can be used for antennas fed with ladder line or long wires. For mobile installations, the RT-11 will

typically tune a loaded whip (Hamstick, Hamwhip, Hustler Resonator, etc.) to the band it is cut for,
plus one band and minus one band. For example, a 40 meter whip will tuner 80, 40 and 20.
Base station antennas like dipoles, beams and multiband verticals will tune a variety of bands.
Since every installation is different, it is difficult to predict the exact range of every antenna.
Typically, if the swr is lower than 10 to 1 for any band (except 6 meters) the RT-11 will reduce the
swr to 1.5 to 1 or less. Of course, the lower the swr is, the better the RT-11 will find a match.

Service: For kits, LDG Electronics will attempt to repair any problems. There are no guarantees
that we can correct problems due to construction. Most repairs average less than $50. Return
shipping is always added to the repair costs. Repair times can vary from 2 to 6 weeks.
We will not attempt to repair any unit that has been soldered with acid core. We reserve the right
to refuse repair due to excessive problems or damage due to construction.
Before any unit is sent to us, you must first contact LDG to get return authorization (phone, e-mail
or FAX). Package the unit carefully and keep in mind that we will use your packaging to return the
unit back to you. Include a description of what problem you are having along with your name,
address and a phone number that you can be reached at in case we have questions.
Future upgrades will be available for about $10 with 68HC11 chip trade in. If you purchased the kit
from LDG, we will notify you when future upgrades and modifications are available through the
LDG Newsletter (also available on the LDG website). If you purchased the tuner through a
distributor and would like to be added to our mailing list, just drop us a note by mail, fax or e-mail.
