Since our establishment in 1885, Cooper has built a solid

In today’s rapidly changing world, innovations in technology
have brought about dramatic changes in our industry. To better
serve our valued customers, we at Cooper Instrument have
expanded our technological capabilities by purchasing Atkins
Technical, a leader in thermocouple technology, and KTG, Inc.,
a provider of problem solving software and wireless
monitoring hardware.
Our newly formed organization will be known as Cooper-Atkins
and will have the capability to meet our customers’ needs with
a wide array of measurement solutions. By exercising the
synergies within our three locations, we are committed to

This is the perfect tool for the
heating, ventilation, air-conditioning
and refrigeration (HVAC/R)
technician. The primary function
of this instrument is to measure the
temperature and pressure values of a
refrigeration system and calculate the
system’s superheat. The instrument is
capable of measuring superheat of 16
of the most common refrigerants.

For those tough-working environments where you need
a durable thermocouple thermometer that will withstand
punishment, this is the perfect
instrument. The TD2000 is well
suited to industrial environments
and can handle temperature
ranges of up to 2,000°F (1093°C).
For added durability, the instrument
has a protective rubber boot that
shields it from damage if dropped.
The dual input jacks allow the
operator to monitor two locations
at once. Once temperatures are
stabilized you can display the
temperature delta between the two
probes. The TD2000 is ideal for

Cold Junction: The point at which thermocouple wires are joined inside
the meter.
°C: Celsius (or centigrade) relationship between Centigrade and Fahrenheit
can be found by multiplying Celsius degrees by 1.8 and then adding 32. For
example 20°C is equal to 20 x 1.8 +32 = 68°F.
Comfort Factors: Conditions other than indoor air contaminants that cause
stress, comfort, and/or health problems (e.g., humidity extremes, drafts, lack
of air circulation, noise, and overcrowding).

Compressor: The main component of an air conditioner or heat pump
system. The compressor creates pressure to maintain the flow of refrigerant.
ABS: Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene - plastic known for its toughness, impact
strength, dimensional stability, lightweight, and surface appearance. Also used in
telephones, appliances, and automobile interiors.
Condenser Coil: The coil that is located after the compressor in an air
conditioning or refrigeration system. This coil is used to remove heat from
a refrigerant in its compressed gaseous state.
ACCA: Air Conditioning Contractor of America, a national trade association
which represents heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration
contractors.
Condensation: Water that is removed from air as it is being cooled.
Conditioned Air: Air that has been heated, cooled, humidified, or
dehumidified to maintain an interior space within the “comfort zone”.
(Can be referred to as “tempered air”.)
Accuracy: Closeness of a reading or indication of a measurement device to
the actual value of the quantity being measured.
Control Point: Temperature at which a system is to be maintained.
ARI: Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute. ARI standards establish
rating criteria and procedures for measuring and certifying comfort product
performance.
Cooling Load: The rate of energy removal from a given space or material.
ASHRAE: American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning
Engineers.
Cooling Tower: A device which cools water by evaporating a portion of it in
the air. Water is cooled to the wet bulb temperature of the air.
ASTM: American Society for Testing and Materials.
D:S (Distance to Spot Ratio): Optical resolution expressed as a ratio of the
distance to the resolution spot divided by the diameter of the spot.
Cooling Coil: A heat transfer device which absorbs heat.
Acceptable Air Quality: Air in which there are no known contaminants
at harmful concentrations and with which a substantial majority (usually 80
percent) of the people exposed do not express dissatisfaction (ASHRAE
1989-62).
Data/Temperature Hold: The ability to freeze the display on any given
measurement. Useful in applications where the instrument is not easily
read while a measurement is being made.
Air Conditioning: The process of treating air to meet the requirements of a
conditioned space by controlling its temperature, humidity, cleanliness, and
distribution (ASHRAE 1989-62).
Delta: Represents the difference between two temperatures: i.e.,
higher temperature minus lower temperature. Delta is the difference.
Ambient Air: The air surrounding an object
Diffusers and Grilles: Components of the ventilation system that distribute
and diffuse air to promote air circulation in the occupied space. Diffusers
supply air and grilles return air.
Ambient: The conditions surrounding the instrument (temperature,
humidity, etc.)

Bimetal Thermometry: The principal on which bimetallic thermometers
work is that a metal changes volume with temperature and that the amount of
change is not the same for all metals. Thus, by banding two metal strips together
to form a coil, the coil’s movement will correspond to temperature change.

Calibration: Comparing an instrument’s measurement against a
known standard.
Calibration Procedure: A procedure to determine and set the parameters
affecting an instruments performance in order to ensure its designed function
within prescribed limits.
Capillary: A tube with a small bore connecting the sensor to the meter.
Celsius (Centigrade): A temperature scale defined by 0°C at the ice point and
100°C at the boiling point of water at sea level.
Clear: To restore a device to a prescribed initial state, usually the zero state.

Positive Pressure: Condition that exists when more air is supplied to a
space than is exhausted, so the air pressure within that space is greater
than in surrounding areas.
Emmissivity: The ratio of energy emitted by the surface of an object
to the energy emitted by a blackbody at the same temperature.
Environment: The surroundings in which an operation is carried out
including the buildings, facilities, stationary and moveable equipment,
personnel, raw materials, utensils, ingredients and other materials that are
used in the process.
Pressure Drop: A term used to characterize the reduction in air
pressure from the compressor discharge to the actual point of use.
Range: The full scale value for a specific instrument setting.
Evaporator Coil: Also called the cooling coil. Refrigerant is pumped
through this coil and changes state from a gas to a liquid. The part of a
AC/Refrigeration system where cooling or the conditioned air takes place.
Reheat: The application of sensible heat to supply air that has been previously
cooled below the temperature of the conditioned space by either mechanical
refrigeration or the introduction of outdoor air to provide cooling.
Exhaust: In a HVAC context, air exiting a room through a duct.
Resolution: The smallest unit that can be detected and displayed by a
measurement device.
Fahrenheit: A temperature scale defined by 32°F at the ice point and 212°F
at the boiling point of water at sea level.
Return: In an HVAC context, air exiting a room through a duct.
Freezing Point: The temperature at which the substance goes from the
liquid phase to the solid phase.
RH: Relative Humidity in % as opposed to absolute humidity which is in
ppm. 100% RH means at that particular temperature, the air cannot absorb
any more humidity and any additional amount will become water.
As the temperature increases, the % RH drops hence allowing more water
to be absorbed.
HACCP: Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points, is a quality safety system that
focuses on the process of food in an operation to reduce risk.
HARDI: Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Distributors International
Refrigerant Lines: Also referred to as the vapor and liquid lines, these
copper lines facilitate the flow of refrigerant within an air conditioning or
refrigeration unit.
HVAC/R: Heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration.
Heat Pump: A type of heating unit that extracts heat from the outside air, and
transports it inside to the air handler coil.
Spirit Filled: A glass tube that uses an alcohol or petroleum liquid inside
instead of mercury.
Hygrometer: An instrument used in measuring humidity.
Storage Temperature Range: The ambient temperature range an
instrument can survive in non-operating mode and perform within
specifications.
Ice Point: A comparison of values from a temperature measurement device
to a more accurate device, where the medium is at a reference of 32°F (0°C).
Ice Slurry: Used in calibrating thermometers. A mixture of crushed ice and
water. This brings the temperature to 32°F (0°C) for low-end calibration.
Super Heating: The heating of a liquid above its boiling temperature
without the formation of the gaseous phase. The heating of the gaseous
phase considerably above the boiling point temperature improves the
thermodynamic efficiency of a system.
Infrared Thermometer: An instrument that determines the temperature
of an object by means of detecting and quantifying the infrared radiation
emitted from the object.
Superheat: The difference between the saturated temperature and the
actual vapor temperature.
Infrared: A range of the electromagnetic spectrum extending beyond red
visible light from 760 nanometers to 1000 microns. Infrared is the form of
radiation used for making non-contact temperature measurements.
Supply: In HVAC terms, air which blows out of ducts into a room.
J-Type Thermocouple: The two thermocouple wires that are made of Iron
and Copper-Nickel.
Temperature Error: The difference between the actual temperature and the
temperature measured by an instrument.
K-Type Thermocouple: The two thermocouple wires that are made of
Nickel Chromium and Nickel Aluminum.
Thermistor: A semiconductor device whose resistance changes with the
temperature.
LCD, Liquid Crystal Display: A common type of display used on many
handheld instruments and electronic products. LCD’s are constructed of two
thin transparent layers with grooves filled with a polarizing liquid.
Thermocouple: Has a voltage output proportional to the difference in temperature between the hot junction and the lead wires (cold junction).
LED, Light Emitting Diode: A semiconductor diode that emits light when
voltage is applied.
UL, Underwriters Laboratories: An independent testing agency that
tests products for safety and performance.
Maximum Operating Range: The maximum temperature at which an
instrument or sensor can be safely operated.
Unitary Air Conditioning Equipment: A unitary air conditioner
consists of one or more factory-made assemblies which normally include
an evaporator or cooling coil, an air moving device, and a compressor and
condenser combination.
Thermometer: An instrument that measures temperature.
Min/Max/Average: Some instruments will record the minimum and
maximum temperature and give the average temperature reading based
on the min and max.
Volt: The electrical potential difference between two points in a circuit. One
volt is the potential difference needed to cause one amp of current to pass
through one ohm of resistance.
NIST: National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA
NIST Traceability: Calibration in accordance with and against standards
traceable to NIST. Traceability to NIST is a means of ensuring that reference
standards remain valid and their calibration remains current.
Variable Air Volume System: Air handling system that conditions the air to a
constant temperature and varies the outside airflow to ensure thermal comfort.
Ventilation: The process of supplying and removing air by natural or
mechanical means to and from a space. Such air may or may not be
conditioned (ASHRAE 62).
NSF: (NSF International) Formerly the National Sanitation Foundation, is best
known for its role in the development of standards and criteria for equipment,
products and services that bear upon health. The NSF mark is widely recognized as a sign that the article complies with the applicable NSF standard.
Ventilation Air: Defined as the total air, which is a combination of the air
brought into the system from the outdoors and the air that is being
recirculated within the building.
Ohm: The basic unit of resistance, specified as equal to that of a conductor
in which one amp of current is produced by one volt of potential across
its terminals.
