CUPS Driver for PCL Based Printers
Installation Instructions
Follow these instructions to install the Linux CUPS driver for Datamax-O’Neil PCL based printers. Note
these steps are specific to Linux distribution Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS with CUPS 1.5.3, and requires
administrative access to the lpadmin group. Other Linux distributions may differ in their setup but the
concepts are similar. It may be necessary to perform a system update to ensure the latest CUPS updates
are installed.
1. Run system-config-printer from command line or run a Printing application. Note this setup can also be
performed using similar steps in CUPS Administration using a web browser and address
http://localhost:631.
2. Click on +Add button.
For TCP:
On Select Device screen under Devices click on Network Printer. Select “AppSocket/HP JetDirect”.
Enter IP address of printer and port number 9100. Click forward. A search may begin which can be
cancelled.
For LPD/LPR:
On Select Device screen under Devices click on Network Printer. Select “LPD/LPR Host or Printer”.
Enter IP address of printer and queue name “lp”. Click forward. A search may begin which can be
cancelled.
For USB:
Ensure cable is connected and printer powered on. On Select Device screen under Devices click on
the correct D-O printer. Click forward. A search may begin.
4. On the Choose Driver screen, under Makes, scroll down to “Generic” and then Click Forward.
5. On the Choose Driver screen, under Models, select “PCL 5e”. Under Drivers select “Generic PCL 5e
Printer”. Note that Foomatic or Gutenprint type is acceptable. Also the PCL 6/PCL XL driver can be
used too if desired. Click Forward.
6. On the Describe Printer screen, select a desired short name, description, and location if necessary.
Then click Apply.
7. Print a test page if desired.
8. When printing from Linux applications the page size should be set to custom in the printer properties.
The desired media settings such as paper sensor type, heat, and the page default settings such as
print width or print length should be set via front panel, webpage or configuration utility prior to
printing.
