A Those who use and maintain the machine should be trained in its proper use, warned of its dangers and should read the entire manual before attempting to set up, operate, adjust or service the machine. SAFE PRACTICES FOR WALK BEHIND MOWERS TRAINING 1. Read the operating and service instruction manual care- fully. Be thoroughly familiar with the controls and the proper use of the equipment. Never allow children to operate a power mower. Keep the area of operation clear of all persons, parti- cularly small children and pets. Regard your mower as a piece of power equipment, and teach this regard to all who operate the equipment. PREPARATION 1. Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used and remove all stones, sticks, wires, bones, and other foreign objects. Do not operate the equipment when barefoot or wearing open footwear. Always wear substantial footwear. Check the fuel before starting the engine. Do not fill the gasoline tank indoors, when the engine is running, or while the engine is still hot. Replace gasoline cap securely and wipe up spilled fuel. Dispose of gas saturated rags properly, in a well ventilated area to avoid possibility of spontaneous combustion. Mow only in daylight or in good artificial light. Plan the cutting operation so it is not necessary to pull the mower rearward towards you, particularly on a downgrade. Disengage the self-propelled mechanism or drive clutch on units so equipped before starting the engine (motor). OPERATION 1. Do not change the engine governor settings or over- speed the engine. Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts. Stop the reel when crossing grave! drives, walks, or roads. After striking a foreign object, stop the engine (motor), remove the wire from the spark plug, thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage, and repair the damage before restarting and operating the mower. If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally, stop the engine (motor) and check immediately for the cause. Vibration is generally a sign of trouble. Stop the engine (motor) whenever you leave the mower unattended, when making any repairs or inspections. When cleaning, repairing, or inspecting, make certain the reel and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wire, and keep the wire away from the plug to prevent accidental starting. Do not run the engine indoors. © COPYRIGHT 1987, TEXTRON INC. 9. Shut the engine (motor) off and wait until the reel comes to a complete stop before removing the grass catcher. 10. Never operate the mower without proper guards, and 11. 12. 13. other protective devices in place. Give complete and undivided attention to the job at hand. Keep in step with the mower. Do not lag behind or let it pull you so you will not be in full command of the machine. Do not run. Control the direction of the mower by hand pressure on the handle, not by foot pressure on the mower housing. Do not attempt to fill gas tank from fuel container unless the container spout or funnel fits INSIDE the fuel tank filler neck. The use of too large a spout or funnel or no funnel, may result in spilled gasoline, creating highly flammable gas vapors. This could result in fire and/or explosion, causing severe bodily injury. Always wipe up any spilled gasoline. Spilled gasoline may collect on the mower. The gasoline and/or fumes may ignite and cause an explosion. Dispose of gas saturated rags properly in a well vent- lated area to avoid possibility of spontaneous combustion. MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE 1. Keep all nuts, bolts and screws tight to be sure the equipment is in safe working condition. Never store the equipment with gasoline in the tank inside a building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark. Allow the engine to cool before storing in any enclosure. To reduce fire hazard, keep the engine free of grass, leaves, or excessive grease. Follow explicitly the manufacturer's recommendations for maintenance. Have a competent service man make a thorough inspection of the mower at least once a year. If carburetor adjustment is necessary, stand to one side and keep feet and hands in the clear while making adjustments. Maximum mowing results and safety can only be expect- ed if the mower is maintained and operated correctly. "Front" and "Rear" likewise refer to directions from the viewpoint of the operator. SET-UP INSTRUCTIONS A. To attach steering handle, remove handle stops from mower, slide onto lower ends of handle through large oval opening and slip handle onto studs in side frames. Tension of handle will hold it in position on studs. Reattach stops to rear cross brace by means of screws furnished and adjust to height desired. B. To attach clutch and throttle bracket to handle see Figure 1. 1. Mount bracket to upper end of handle using 1/4-20 x 1-1/4 hex head screws and gripco lock nuts from bag of parts. 2. Remove swivel stud and screw from end of throttle wire. 3. Place stud, previously removed from end of wire, in throttle ring lever so that hole is lined up with lever slot. Insert wire with 1/8"(3.1 mm) extending through the stud and secure with round head screw. 4. Attach clutch rod to clutch lever with cotter pin and washer. NOTE: Short end of clutch rod must attach to clutch lever. hottie Cotter Pin A À & Washer Bracket a «— Clutch Rod Figure 1 5. Hook clutch rod to safety switch by loop spring (item 37, lllust. 5) over clutch rod after long end of rod has been inserted into shifting lever. 6. The small spring furnished will hold rod in position and keep it from rattling. Slide looped end over rod, then with hand pliers grasp straight end and push end through hole in rod. (See lllust. 2) BEDKNIFE The bedknife has been adjusted away from the reel to prevent damage during shipping. It must be adjusted as described under "Cutting Unit Adjustment" on Page 8 or reel will not cut properly. OPERATING CONTROLS Coun Tom Shut-Off Valve X Choke Lever | open Stop Button (Shown In Open Position) Governor Case Oil Drain Plug Crank Case Drain Plug Figure 2 CHOKE CONTROL LEVER (See Fig. 2) The choke control lever is located directly under the gas tank and has two positions: "Choke" and "Open". The choke control is for starting the engine. Once the engine starts place the lever in the "Open" position and control the engine speed with the throttle control lever located on the upper handle. THROTTLE CONTROL (See Fig. 1) The speed of the engine is controlled by the movable collar on the right hand side of the handle. When the collar is turned back, the speed of the engine is decreased. TRACTION CLUTCH CONTROL (See Fig. 1) To engage traction clutch push clutch lever forward. Pull clutch lever back to disengage clutch. REEL CLUTCH CONTROL The reel clutch (item 65, lllust. 1) is located to the left of the reel on the chain case. Turning the handle half around, pointing forward, will disengage the reel. Have clutch disengaged when mower is being transported to avoid possible accidents and damage to reel and bed knife. Always disengage the reel clutch when crossing driveways, or such places where stones or other objects may become lodged in the reel. STARTING AND STOPPING ENGINE A DANGER To avoid possible serious bodily injury, keep hands and feet away from reel blades before and after starting the engine. Be certain that the traction and reel clutches are disengaged before starting engine. Engine will not start unless clutch lever is in dis- engaged position. NOTE: For break-in of new engine, use a mixture of 20 parts Gasoline and 1 part Jacobsen 2 Cycie Engine Oil during first 20 hours of operation. STARTING ENGINE 1. Check fuel supply and open fuel tank shut-off valve. (See Fig. 2) OPERATING 2. Set choke control lever to the "Choke" position. 3. Make certain clutch lever is in the neutral position or interlock switch will not allow engine to start. 4. Grasp the starter handle firmly, then pull slowly and firmly to crank the engine. 5. When engine starts, move choke lever to the "Open" position. Intermittent choking may be required while engine is cold. 6. Allow engine to warm up at low speed without load. STOPPING ENGINE Use stop button to stop engine. (See Fig. 2) INSTRUCTIONS A DANGER To avoid possible serious bodily injury while clearing grass build-up from around the reel shaft, disengage clutches and control levers, stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire from the plug, and place the wire away from the plug. POWER TRANSPORT WHEELS We recommend that the optional power transport wheels be used whenever the mower is transported. (See lliust. 6) The wheels are quickly attached and removed after the mower is raised by pushing the foot rest (Item 21, lllust. 6) down against ground and pulling back on handle. The life of the mower is greatly increased when the transport wheels are used over rough fairways, and time is saved in moving from one green to another. The wheels are removed or attached by sliding the retaining clip (Item 16, [llust. 6) to the end of the groove and rotating it 90% to a position parallel to the shaft. When operating with transport wheels in place, the clip must be at right angles to the shaft and centered. Be sure transport wheel bearings and pawls are kept lubricated as stated in the lubrication chart. CUTTING WITH MOWER First, be sure to read and understand the instructions in this manual. Check the cutting height of mower, reset if necessary. Upon arrival at the green, remove the transport wheels and place them in a clean area off to the side of the green. Engage the reel clutch before starting the engine. Be sure that the traction clutch is disengaged before attempting to engage the reel clutch. To engage the reel clutch, put outward and upward pressure on the clutch handle and turn the drive shaft slowly until the handle has rotated one half turn to the upward position and seated squarely in the retaining notch. Position mower at one side of green, (whichever side suits operator's convenience), slightly off the green. Start the engine as outlined in "Starting and Stopping the Engine”. Lift the mower head above the grass by pushing down on the handle then engage the traction clutch. As the mower head crosses the edge of the green set the mower head down and proceed across the green in a straight line. When the opposite side of the green is reached, lift the mower head without disengaging the traction clutch and proceed off the green to turn around. The inexperienced operator may find it helpful to reduce engine speed somewhat while turning around, do not disengage the traction clutch how- ever. As the operator gains experience he will develop his own style of turning around, however the following may prove helpful. GREEN } 1" to 2" Overlap (25 mm) to 2" (50 mm) Figure 3 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 4th Mowing 3rd Mowing These are suggested patterns only, operator can arrange patterns to suit each green 1st Mowing 2nd Mowing Figure 4 To turn to the right - start by turning slightly (approx. 30°) to the left. When the mower has moved approx. 1/2 it's own width to the left, swing it around quickly to the right, guiding it with the right hand. This method makes it possible to turn around quickly with very few steps (See Fig. 3). A left turn is made in the same manner as a right turn except that the directions are reversed. To assure complete, even cutting it is necessary to overlap swaths by 1"(25 mm) or 2"(50 mm). After completely cover- ing the green using the back and forth pattern, it is necessary to make one or more passes around the circumference of the green to clean up the ragged edges and to neatly separate the putting green surface from the apron area. lt is customary to alter the mowing pattern each time a green is mowed. This provides a more even playing surface and neater appearance (See Fig. 4). Always disengage the reel clutch prior to transporting the mower more than a few feet as damage to the reel blades and bedknife will occur if the reel is permitted to run without cutting grass for more than a few seconds. Normal turns off the green with the reel lifted above the grass will do no harm. MAINTENANCE LUBRICATION CHART item Part Interval ea Remarks (A)| Chain case and L.H. Side Annually | S.A.E. ADJUSTMENTS Driving NC Lock Screw «= Adjusting N = #8 / N LBS Clutch Fork Bolt A Operating Lever Zz ZA LL Figure 7 CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT . After extended use the traction clutch will require adjust- ment to prevent slippage. See Figure 7 and adjust as follows: Disengage the clutch. Loosen the fillister head screw on the cluich one-half to three-quarter turn. Now tap the clutch collar lightly moving it toward the engine about 1/32" (.793 mm). Retighten screw on collar and engage clutch and test the adjustment. Too much move- ment of the collar toward the engine will prevent the clutch from being engaged. The right adjustment will permit easy operation of the clutch without any slippage existing. 2. To prevent excessive clutch shoe wear adjust tension of the clutch fork bolt to hold the shoe free in the clutch operating sleeve grooved with clutch handle in the for- ward or engaged position. TRACTION SHAFT BEARING ADJUSTMENT Any end play that develops in traction shaft must be removed. Proceed as follows: 1. Remove right transport wheel. 2. Remove R.H. wheel drive pin from traction shaft. 3. Remove bearing cap screws. Use puller to remove bear- ing cap with bearing from shaft. Remove gasket. 4. Turn adjusting nut to right only enough to eliminate end play. 5. Replace all parts in reverse order. Tighten securely. CUTTING UNIT ADJUSTMENT (See Fig. 8) Upper and lower adjusting nuts and locknuts are provided on both sides. (Turning the upper adjusting nut clockwise moves the bedknife away from the reel; counter-clockwise, toward the reel). Adjusting Nut —® = E 4 Front Cross Bar Locknut — Adjusting Nut Bedknife Shoe Bedknife Adjusting Rod = | Figure 8 To adjust the bedknife to the reel follow steps below: 1. With the engine stopped, disengage the ree! clutch so that the reel can be freely revolved by hand. 2. Turn each upper adjusting nut counter-clockwise while slowly revolving the reel to obtain very light reel blade to bedknife contact from end to end. 3. Tighten lower adjusting nuts and check adjustment with paper. 4. The adjustment should be such that it is possible to cut a strip of newspaper along the entire length of each reel blade. It should be possible to spin the reel backwards by hand after making this adjustment. Avoid excessive tightening or serious damage may result to knife and reel blades. 5. Tighten locknut securely, when correct adjustment has been attained. To remove bedknife shoe: 1. Turn adjusting nuts counter-clockwise 1/4 turn or more to bring the bedknife into light contact with the reel blades. 2. Remove both shoe mounting bolts. 3. Turn adjusting nuts counter-clockwise until the shoe ends are relieved of all spring pressure. 4. Rotate shoe ends out from between spring and adjusting bolt ends. To replace bedknife shoe: 1. Place shoe ends between springs and adjusting bolt ends and rotate shoe into position with the bedknife in position below the reel blades. 2. Turn adjusting nuts evenly, clockwise, until holes in shoe and frame can be aligned. ADJUSTMENTS 3. Install both shoe mounting bolts and pull them normally tight with a hand wrench. 4. Adjust bedknife to proper cutting position (see section on sharpening the reel) and shim and lap if necessary. DRESSING THE BEDKNIFE (See Fig. 9) After the unit has been in operation for a period of time it may become necessary to dress the face of the bedknife. A flat surface of approximately 1/32" (0.8 mm) should be maintained to insure a good quality of cut. A sharp jagged edge will result in a ragged cut. Cutting units that are being used in sandy conditions or on surfaces with a high sand content top dressing will require more frequent dressing of the bedknife. 1/32" (08. mm) minimum | С Л | Front Face Side View of Bedknife Figure 9 SHARPENING THE REEL When the reel becomes dull or nicked, it may be lapped in with emery and oil by the following method: 1. Disengage reel clutch. Remove reel bearing cover from left hand frame. Insert reversing crank in reel shaft, turning it to the right. к © № Adjust the bedknife evenly so the reel blades wipe along its entire length. In case there is a high spot in the bedknife, loosen the screw nearest that point and insert a shim between the knife and shoe. When the knife has the best possible contact with the reel blades, turn the reel back-ward and apply a mixture of emery dust (#60 carborundum) and oil with a brush along the entire length of the reel. When the blades have been evenly lapped in this manner, carefully wash off the remaining mixture from the blades and shoe. Readjust the cutting unit as outlined in "Cutting Unit Adjustment”. Removing reel from mower: After long service, it may be necessary to remove the reel for servicing. NOTE: Reel grinding is normally done without removing the reel for servicing. pu _ Back the bedknife away from contact with the reel. 2. Remove both transport wheels (if used). 3. Remove R.H. and L.H. transport wheel drive pins from the traction shaft. : 4. Remove screws holding R.H. and L.H. transport bearing caps and remove caps using a puller. 5, Loosen reel clutch lever hold-down spring, rotate from above lever and remove lever. 6. Remove chain housing drain and filler plugs and drain housing. Tip unit up on L.H. side to drain. 7. Remove chain cover. 8. Loosen and remove all three sprockets with the chains in place. 9. Remove R.H. reel bearing cover, nut, washer, spring and bearing cone. 10. Remove pin from L.H. bearing spacing collar and remove collar and bearing cone. 11. Remove front roller bracket mounting screw, front tie rod nut, bedknife shoe mounting bolt, and four crossbar mounting bolts from the R.H. side frame and remove the R.H. side frame. NOTE: Removal of the L.H. side frame from the mower involves disassembly of the planetary set. This is inadvisable. 12. Slide reel out from L.H. side frame. To reassemble the reel, follow the above instructions in reverse order. After reassembly refill the chain case with EP-140 oil to level of lower plug and follow instructions in preceding paragraphs regarding bedknife adjustment. Lap if necessary. STORAGE STORING MOWER At the end of the season, or if mower is to be stored for any length of time, the following steps are recommended: Wash off accumulated dust and clippings with spray from garden hose, being careful not to direct water at the engine. If necessary a soft bristled scrub brush can be used to clean wheels and tires. Wipe entire unit with clean cloth to remove gasoline stains and oily spots. This simple procedure will keep your mower looking like new for years to come. When mower is completely dry, lubricate it throughly. Follow instructions in maintenance section of this manual. ENGINE A. Completely drain fuel tank and carburetor. Unscrew main jet holder (Item 13, lllust. 13) at bottom of float chamber. Change Governor oil (See "Engine Lubrication") . Remove spark plug and pour 5 to 10 cc (1 oz.) of oil through the plug hole. Turn recoil starter several times and replace spark plug. D. Clean all external engine parts with a slightly oiled cloth. Magneto (Transistor Control ignition) solves the common problems of pitting, oxidation and ignition timing found in the conventional point type magneto. A. Components of the T.C.I. Magneto are shown in lllustration 14 and briefly described below. 1. The flywheel has permanent magnets that generate an A.C. electromotive force in the primary coil of the generating assembly as these magnets rotate. The generating assembly consists of a primary and secondary coil. Rotation of the flywheel generates a voltage in the primary coil and feeds a current. At the same time a high voltage is induced in the secondary coil. The T.C.I. unit consists mainly of a Silcone Control Rectifier (SCR) and other semi-conductor parts. It senses the primary current waveform generated in the Generating Assembly, and switches the transistor to cut off the primary coil current. This abrupt current change causes a high voltage to be induced in the secondary coil. TROUBLE-SHOOTING ( Spark plugs won't spark. ) Primary Wire Secondary Wire Stop T.C.I.
