Because of their durability, cast iron cylinder sleeve engines are a good choice for professional or commercial applications. Control Box The Control Box, depending on model, includes the start/stop switch, choke and throttle controls, an Oil Alert LED and a built-in hour meter. Electric Starting System Relies on battery power and a starter motor to ignite the combustion process that starts the engine. Some electric start engines have recoil backup in the event of battery failure. All single cylinder engines w/electric start have recoil back, but only a few V-Twins have the recoil back up w/electric start, which is standard on all V-Twin engines. Gear Ratio Takes into consideration the equipment’s application and the speed of the engine. On most small engines, the crankshaft will make 3600 revolutions per minute (RPM). In some applications cement mixers, for example -- this speed would be too high. features to consider Low-Oil Level System Causes the ignition to ground, stopping the engine (or preventing it from starting) in the event insufficient oil is in the crankcase. Mechanical Governor Uses gears and flyweights inside the crankcase to sense speed and detect changes in the load, adjusting the throttle to compensate. Mufflers A Variety of mufflers are available to fit common applications OHC (Over Head Cam) OHC engines have their camshafts positioned in the cylinder head above the combustion chamber. Valves are located in the roof of the combustion chamber to offer the same combustion-related advantages as the OHV engines. The OHC+ layout builds on these advantages by reducing the number of valve train components and making them light and strong. OHV (Over Head Valve) Engines have the valves installed in the cylinder head so they face the piston and offer greater efficiency. A more symmetrical combustion chamber means more efficient burning of the air/fuel mixture. Recoil (or rewind) Starting System Operated by pulling a rope, a strong tub spins the flywheel fast enough to generate the voltage necessary for ignition. V-Twin Design Has two OHV cylinders operating in the combustion chamber, reducing vibration considerably. Crankshaft size is very important to know when replacing an engine. Air Filtration Systems Honda offers a variety of air filters to match your application, including dual-element, semi-dry, oil-bath, and Cyclone Air Cleaner with inner-vent carburetor. “Inner-vent” carburetors are now available on specific models with dual-element filters. Honda’s inner-vent carburetor places the float bowl vent on the “clean side” of the air filter elements so that the air/fuel ratio remains more constant as the elements become dirty. This allows the length of the service interval for air filter maintenance to be more than doubled. features to consider Reduction Units The 2-to-1 reduction unit is chain or gear driven and may include an automatic, centrifugally operated clutch as well as a wet clutch. Clutch engagement occurs at 1800 rpm and clutch lock occurs at 2200. The 6-to-1 gear reduction is gear driven and does not include a clutch. Measuring Engine Shafts How to Measure Horizontal Engine Shaft How to Measure Vertical Engine Shaft On Horizontal Engines, measure the shaft length only. On a horizontal engine, the shaft comes out the side. Most of these engines turn at 3600 RPM in a counter-clockwise rotation (as you face the shaft end). If you are direct-coupling a pump to a gas engine, you need a clockwise rotating pump. A Vertical Engine’s shaft protrudes from the bottom, ideal for propelling the cutting blades on walk-behind and riding lawn mowers. Measure A for Shaft Length A Measure A for Shaft Length A B B is incorrect. It is important to measure from the bottom of the mounting ring and not from the bottom of the oil pan. Locate and disconnect the coil (charge coil or lamp coil) wire connector(s). b. Connect a DMM (set to measure AC volts) across the coil wires, or across the single coil wire and engine ground. c. Start the engine and slowly raise the throttle to its normal maximum operating position while observing the voltmeter. • The output voltage should start low at idle, then rise and level off at full throttle (see the table in the center column). If this is the case, the coil is functioning properly. Reconnect the wires and proceed to step . • If the measured output voltage is low (or zero) and does not rise at full throttle, proceed to step “d.” d. Stop the engine. Use a DMM (set to measure ohms) and check the resistance of the coil (see the table in the center column). • If the resistance is good but the output voltage is low, inspect the flywheel. If OK, replace the coil, reconnect the wires, and proceed to step . • If the resistance is not normal and the output voltage is low or zero, replace the coil, reconnect the wires, and proceed to step . CORRODED TERMINAL Always check the easy things first. Check for problems on both the engine and the product powered by the engine. • Check for broken, bent, or loose terminals. • Check for corroded wires, connectors, or terminals. • Check for a pinched, cut, or damaged wire harness. • Check for a blown fuse or a defective circuit protector (always replace the fuse with the correct size). If the new fuse blows after replacement, troubleshoot for a short circuit in the system. Begin with a fully charged 12-volt battery. Connect a DMM (Digital MultiMeter) as shown. With the meter set to measure DC volts, record the battery voltage. Isolate all loads from the battery before testing the charging system. 2. Perform steps ~ . Identify the system to be tested. Charge coil – used to charge the battery to operate the starter motor and other DC loads. Lamp coil – used to power loads without the need for a battery. Use the engine’s model and type information and the parts catalog to determine the engine’s charging system rated capacity. OUTPUT TEST REGULATOR/RECTIFIER TESTING BATTERY NEGATIVE (-) CABLE A (DCA SCALE) 7A and 10A REGULATOR/RECTIFIERS Install a known good regulator/rectifier and retest the system. 3A RECTIFIER Test by performing a continuity test. 1A RECTIFIER Test by performing a continuity test. LOAD TEST DMM The following tests are performed when the charging system is operating normally but the battery discharges, either while the engine is running or while the engine is off. a. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and connect a DMM (set to measure DC amps) as shown. Use a shunt if the system you are testing draws more current than your meter’s DC amps rating. b. Turn the engine switch on and activate loads one at a time. Record the current draw of each load. – If the total current draw of all the loads is less than the engine’s rated charging capacity, the charging system can maintain the battery. – If the total current draw of all the loads is more than the engine’s rated charging capacity, the charging system cannot maintain the battery. Repair or replace the loads as needed. c. With the ignition switch OFF, check for any parasitic current draw on the battery. A small amount of parasitic current draw (less than 0.02 mA) is normal. If an abnormal parasitic draw is measured, disconnect loads one at a time while monitoring the parasitic draw. Repair as necessary. d. Reconnect the negative (-) battery cable to the negative (-) battery terminal and perform the Output Test (step ). If OK, return the equipment to the customer. 18A and 20A REGULATOR/RECTIFIERS Install a known good regulator/rectifier and retest the system. • Inspect the rectifier by checking continuity following the inspection chart in the appropriate shop manual. Replace the rectifier if necessary and retest the system starting at step . • Regulator/rectifiers have resistance tests in the appropriate shop manual. These tests are somewhat inconclusive because of the electronic regulation mechanism. If all other tests and inspections are made with no problems found, replace the regulator/rectifier with a known good one and retest the system starting at step . a. Connect a DMM (set to measure DC volts) between the battery terminals as shown in step . b. Start the engine and run at the maximum throttle position while observing the DC voltage. c. With the engine still running, disconnect the DMM. Set the DMM to measure DC amps and connect the DMM to the battery as shown in step .
