HP Color LaserJet 2600n Printer - Printing from a
Client PC to a Shared the Color LaserJet 2600n May
Cause Application to Shut Down
Issue Description
When sharing the HP Color LaserJet 2600n printer via Microsoft Windows File-and-Print sharing, those printing
from the client workstations (not directly connected to the Color LaserJet 2600n printer) may experience
application shutdowns when printing from the following applications:
z
Microsoft Word
z
Microsoft Excel
z
Microsoft Outlook
z
Microsoft PowerPoint
z
Adobe Acrobat versions 5 and 6
The following error message may appear: "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." The PC acting as the server (directly connected to the Color
LaserJet 2600n printer) does not exhibit this behavior. This issue only occurs when using the HP Color LaserJet
2600n printer driver found on the Version 1.0 HP Color LaserJet 2600n software CD and the driver was vended
to the client workstation from the PC acting as the print server (point-and-print install).
Solution
Complete the following to resolve this issue:
1. Install the HP Color LaserJet 2600n Version 2.0 software CD on the PC acting as the server (directly
connected to the Color LaserJet 2600n). If Version 1.0 of the HP Color LaserJet 2600n software is
currently installed, insert the Version 2.0 CD into the CD-ROM drive and choose "Add/Repair Printer
Drivers" and then complete the installation of the software. If the CD does not automatically run,
double-click Setup.exe on the root of the CD.
NOTE:
Look at the About information in the HP Color LaserJet 2600n printer driver Preferences to verify
which CD was installed. This can be found in the Basics tab of the driver. Follow these steps to get
the version number: Select Start, Settings, Printers (Printers and Faxes in Microsoft Windows
XP). Right-click the printer name and choose Printing Preferences (Properties in Microsoft
Windows 98 or ME) with left mouse button. Click the Basics tab and select About.
„
Version 1.0 CD = driver version 20050216
„
Version 2.0 CD = driver version 20050525
2. Delete the currently installed HP Color LaserJet 2600n printer driver on the client PC (computer not
directly connected to the Color LaserJet 2600n printer), and install the updated driver. The installation
can be done either by vending the driver from the PC acting as the server (aka point-and-print) or install
the driver using Add Printer in the Printers (Printers and Faxes folder and then connecting to the
shared port.
Workaround
This workaround does not require the Version 2.0 CD. Delete the printer driver from the Printers folder or the
Printers and Faxes folder on the client PC (computer not directly connected to the printer). Next perform an
Add Printer installation of the HP Color LaserJet 2600n from the Printers or Printers and Faxes folder
(version 1.0 software CD can be used). During the Add Printer installation of the driver select the shared
printer port; i.e. \\server_name\printer_name. This will need to be done on each client that will be
printing to the shared HP Color LaserJet 2600n printer.
Background Information
This issue only occurs if the Version 1.0 software was installed on the PC acting as the server (directly
connected to the Color LaserJet 2600n) and the driver was vended to the client workstation (aka point-andprint). If the version 1.0 driver was installed on the client workstation via Add Printer and then connected to
the shared port the error does not occur.
