Frequently asked questions

First, adjust the length of the tripod legs so that the instrument is comfortably high for measuring. Make sure that the cross of the optical plummet eyepiece coincides with the ground point. Then, extend or retract the tripod legs to position the circular bubble in the center of the setting circle.

Turn the alidade so that the plate level is parallel to the line joining two foot screws. Then, turn the adjustment screw and bring the bubble to a point halfway between the moved point. Finally, turn the foot screw to bring the bubble to the center.

The instrument can be centered under a plumb bob suspended from a roof or ceiling by lining up the plumb bob with the center of the reticle illumination knob. The instrument is fitted on the tripod placed under the tip of the plumb bob. Level up the instrument and shift it so that the center of the reticle illumination knob exactly coincides with the tip of the plumb bob.

First, point the telescope to a bright direction and rotate the eyepiece ring until the cross hairs are sharp and black. Then, point the telescope to the target and turn the focussing knob until the target is seen sharp or free from parallax.

First, read off the circle graduation in 20° unit on the regular scale indicated by the G line on the vernier scale. Secondly, read off the reading on the vernier scale which is most closely aligned with the regular scale. Add the reading of the two scales together to obtain the final reading.

Firstly, read off the circle graduation in 30" unit on the regular scale indicated by the O line on the vernier scale. Secondly, read along the regular scale and read off the reading on the vernier scale which is most closely aligned with the regular scale. Add the reading of the two together to obtain the final reading.
