Getting Started Guide SettingUpYoUr HP LaserJet 4Si Printer . Prepare a Location for the Printer 16' (40 cm) t t 8' (20 cm) 8' (20cm) 4--+ I----) 37.5' (95 cm) b Your location requirements are: A sturdy, level surface for placement. A stable environment with no abrupt temperature or humidity changes. Space allowance around printer as shown above. No exposure to chemicals or direct sunlight. A well-ventilated room. 0 Room temperature 50 to 90.5 F/ 10 to 32.5 C. Relative humidity 20% to 80%. Line voltage not varying more than f10% from the value stated on the printer nameplate. Remove the Printer from the Box Save all packing material. You may need to repack and transport your printer at a later date. Please recycle what you don’t save. Remove all accessories from the cardboard tray and lift the tray from the box. Remove the packing pieces from the top of the printer. Lift the box away from the printer. Remove the side packing material. Untape the plastic bag and fold it down to the pallet. CAUTION This printer weighs 95 pounds / 43 kg. We recommend two people to move it. Get help to lift the printer to its new location. Please recycle what you don’t save. two paper tray slots. Remove the tape from the control panel display window. Remove the tape from the rear paper output tray and side door. Push down firmly on the top cover release button to open the printer. Remove the cardboard from inside the printer. Lift up and gently pull out fuser spacers. Remove the cardboard pieces from inside the ~~ ~~~~ Install the Toner Cartridge Locate the toner cartridge (it is in a separate box). Remove the toner cartridge from its bag. Distribute the toner by rocking the cartridge back and forth five or six times. Next, gently shake the cartridge from side to side five or six times. Open the printer to the half-open position. ~ - Hold the cartridge as shown above. Slide the cartridge into the cover of the printer. -. ~ . . .- . . .. Bend the tab on the left side of the toner cartridge back and forth until it breaks. Hold the printer steady. Firmly pull the tab and the sealing tape straight out. It will be hard to pull. If the tab separates from the tape, pull out all of the tape. Avoid touching the black part of the tape. Throw away the sealing tape strip, about 22 in./55 cm long. Push firmly against the toner cartridge to make sure it is seated correctly. Close the printer. Load the Paper Paper Specifications Your H P LaserJet 4Si printer works well with many common paper types, particularly xerographic bond papers with basis weights from 16 to 28 pounds/ 60 to 105 g/m2 for simplex and duplex printing. However, we recommend you test your paper for acceptable performance. Refer to appendix E, Media Specifications, in the HP LaserJet 4Si Printer User’s Reference Manual for paper information. Locate the two letter-size paper trays. Remove the cover and cardboard packing material from inside both trays. Load paper into both paper trays. Each tray holds 500 sheets of 20-pound paper. Ensure that the paper is flat in the tray at all four corners. .~ Replace the paper tray cover. To remove paper trays, lift up and pull straight out. Firmly insert the bottom and top trays into the printer. Install the Bin Full Sensor Arm 1 Locate the Bin Full Sensor Arm. Locate the Bin Full Sensor Arm holder at the top of the printer. Rotate the Bin Full Sensor Arm holder downward. Insert the Bin Full Sensor Arm into the slot. ~ _ _ ..___ NOTE For information on the Bin Full Sensor Arm, refer to the Special Printer Operations chapter in your HP LaserJet 4Si Printer User’s Reference Manual. Rest the Bin Full Sensor Arm on the printer. Connect the Printer to a Power Supply 4 Locate the power cord. Locate the power switch on the front of the printer. Make sure the power switch is in the OFF (0) position. Insert the power cord into the power connector plug on the back of the printer. CAUTION: Insert the other end of the power cord only into a 120-volt AC power outlet. If you want the control panel messages displayed in English, skip section I and go to section J. If you want the messages in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch, Finnish, or Portuguese, follow these instructions. Turn the printer OFF (0). Click= to save your choice. An asterisk (*) will appear beside your language selection. NOTE If the language does not change, you may not have pressed to save your new selection. I 0Manual 0Duplex Ready When printing stops, press Proceed to section K. Select BiTronics Parallel or The default interface for the H P LaserJet 4Si printer is BiTronics parallel. However, the HP LaserJet 4Si printer can be configured in different ways. For information about configuring your printer with: 0 BiTronics parallel (default): go to section L for information on the BiTronics parallel interface cable. H P JetDirect: refer to the HP JetDirect Network Interface Configuration Guide which came with your HP JetDirect card. For connection to a LocalTalk network, refer to the HP JetDirect Interface for LocalTalk Networks Administrator’s Guide that came with your HP JetDirect card. Note The parallel cable used to connect the printer to the computer is not provided with the printer. It must be purchased separately. If information about the interface you wish to install is not addressed here, refer to the documentation that came with your connection or call your HP dealer for assistance. Select BiTronics Parallel Interface A computer communicates with a printer through an interface cable. Your HP LaserJet 4Si printer supports a BiTronics parallel cable which is fully compatible with a Centronics parallel cable. This cable is inserted into the back of your printer and connects to your computer. The illustrations below show you where to insert the cable into your printer port and what the end of the BiTronics parallel cable looks like. Continue to the next page for more information about your cable. If you have not purchased your interface cable, the information on the next two pages will help you identify the cable. Plug the cable into your computer and your printer. Use the wire clips to attach the cable t o your printer. Turn your computer and printer ON. Follow these steps to verify the printer configuration settings. Continue to section N. Set Up a DOS AUTOEXEC.BAT File The MODE command prepares MS-DOS for communication with your HP LaserJet 4Si printer. The MODE command for a BiTronics parallel cable is listed below. PARALLEL: MODE LPTl:,,P Use a word processing application that saves ASCII text or a text editor such as DOS EDLIN, or DOS EDIT for DOS 5 to enter the appropriate MODE command(s) into your DOS AUTOEXEC.BAT file. For more information about MODE commands and your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, refer to your DOS manual. For MS-DOS version 4.0 and above, enter: MODE LPTl:,,B Continue to section 0. Verify Communication Between the Computer and Printer To make sure your printer and computer are set up correctly to talk to one another, print out a directory list. Make sure your computer and printer are ON and your printer is on line. (On Line indicator is lit.) At the root directory (A:\> or C : b ) type DIR>PRN Press -to take the printer off line. If the form feed light is ON, press to eject the page. Press to put the printer back on line. If the printer does not print the list of files and the printer’s control panel does not display an error message, read through the troubleshooting checklist (section Q) for help in solving the problem. If a n error message appears in the printer control panel display, refer to the Troubleshooting chapter in your HP LaserJet 4Si Printer User’s Reference Manual for information. Then, read through the troubleshooting checklist (section Q) for help in solving the problem. If the list of files prints without a problem, printer setup is complete. Now you can set up your software to work with your new HP LaserJet printer. Refer to your HP LaserJet 4Si Printer Software Application Notes, included with your printer, for information on printing with your software. To verify communication between the computer and printer PostScript and to verify communication between MS-DOS and your printer: Make sure your computer and printer are turned ON and your printer is on line. At the MS-DOS prompt (:\>), type . Then Edlin Test.PS and press perform the following ste a At isk (*I, type l i and b At the l:*,type clipp showpage and press c At the 2:*, hold the down and press C. d At the asterisk (*I, type e and press e At the DOS prompt (:\>>, type Copy Test.PS.LF’Tl: and press for parallel configuration. The -indicator will flash to indicate the printer has received this data. A page with a border surrounding the image area will print. If the list of files prints out without a problem, printer setup is complete. Now, you can set up your software to work with your new H P LaserJet 4Si printer. Refer to your HP LaserJet 4Si Software Application Notes, included with your printer, for information on printing with your software. HP Explorer and Driver Installation 1 2 ~~ The HP Explorer package contains an online information program called Travel Guide. To install the program, open the package and follow the instructions Select the DOS or Windows driver disk and install by following the instructions located in the disk label. CONGRATULATIONS! You have completed the setup of your printer. Now take the time to review your HP Exlorer Travel Guide to become familiar with the features and operation of your HP LaserJet 4Si printer. Troubleshooting Checklist Troubleshooting Checklist: (This list excludes AUTOEXEC.BAT errors. See AUTOEXEC.BAT Troubleshooting Checklist below.) AUTOEXEC.BATTroubleshooting Checklist: Did you reboot your computer after editing your AUTOEXEC.BAT file? When you finished entering the printer configuration into the AUTOEXl3C.BAT file (section N), you needed to reboot the computer. Hold down a t the same time. Is the On Line indicator on the printer control panel lit? If not, press mid. Did you set up the control panel correctly? Check to make sure you entered the correct interface selections into the control panel. Repeat the procedure in sections M and N for a BiTronics parallel interface, or go to the instructions that came with the interface you are using. Was your computer or printer ON when you connected the interface cable? Turn OFF the computer and printer. Wait 15 seconds, then turn them ON again. Is your printer working correctly? Run the SELF TEST described in section J. If blank pages print, make sure you have removed the sealing tape from the toner cartridge (section E). If necessary, call your HP dealer or HP sales representative. m,m,m 0 Did you set up the AUTOEXEC.BAT file correctly? Recheck your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. At your root directory (A:\> or C:\>), type TYPE AUTOEXEC.BAT .. Look over your MODE statement carefully for errors; a character may be missing, a space maybe left out, or something is in the wrong place. To correct an error, refer to your DOS manual. __ Problems with Post Script Printing Symptom Problem j Solution An error message appears when you reboot the computer. After you copy the Test.PS file from section 0 to LPT1, the message: Write fault error writing device Abort, Retry, Fail? appears. Your printer did not print the Test.PS file and the DOS prompt ( :\>) appears on the computer. You have entered the wrong MODE statement for your type of cable, or your MODE statement contains an error, or your cable is not attached to the correct connector. 1. Check your interface and cable. 2. Check your AUTOEXECBAT file for errors. Your MODE statement redirects your data to the wrong port.
