Thoughts on MI Product Market Trends
Thoughts on MI Product Market Trends T.Williams 5‐4‐2012 Student Amplifier Market Trends See InstrumentAmpsMkt.pdf for an analysis of the MI amplifier market that I did last summer (July, 2011). This was based on MI Trak data and discussions with Gibson and Musicians Friend product managers. In my opinion, the guitar amp market is poised on a major shift in customer expectations. On the one hand, the market is shifting toward product that is less than $100 street price, indicating an increase in entry level electric customers. On the other hand, there is a shift toward solid state amps with DSP front ends over tube hybrid amps in the higher price ranges. Technologically speaking, DSP front ends are common today, especially in the $100‐$499 price range. Aside from some high‐end keyboard amps, all instrument amps other than acoustic guitar amps are all mono. This is true despite the fact that many of the DSP effects demand or highly favor stereo outputs. There is a blue ocean opportunity to marry advanced DSP technology with stereo amp/speakers for the electric guitar amp market in the $100‐$499 price range. Another technology shift is toward digital, or Class D, amps. Basically, this type of amp works by alternatively toggling one transistor turned fully on and the other turned fully on. Since the resistance of the fully on transistor is very low, the power dissipation is low. The audio signal is represented by how long the transistor is fully on versus fully off. The switching occurs at a high enough frequency that the switching artifacts can easily be filtered out, leaving amplified audio. Recent technologies have combined the Class D amp with switching power supplies, making a highly efficient and cost effective amp where the AC line is fed in along with line level audio, and the outputs connect directly to speakers. This technology is being rapidly adopted in acoustic and bass guitar amps, and in some keyboard and PA amps. To my knowledge, it is has not yet been used for electric guitar amps. A Class D amp is highly efficient (85%‐95%) as opposed to Class AB amps (40%). This means Class D amps are smaller, lighter, and less expensive. Although the technology is relatively new, there have been many advances over the last decade that effectively deal with the various sources of inaccuracies that plagued the early designs. The technology is sufficiently advanced for it to be the best economical choice for any instrument amp over 40 watts. Student Guitar Market Trends See TopGuitarSKUsPerCategory.pdf, which is a table showing the top SKUs as of last July. It is no surprise that Fender (Squier) owns the electric guitar market below $500 street price. The only exception is the Epiphone Les Paul Standard ebony, which is #1 in the $200‐$499 range. All of these guitars are made in China. The bass guitar market is more brand diverse, shared between Dean, Hofner, Ibanez, and Fender. The acoustic guitar market is hugely dominated by the Yamaha FG‐700S, which has a street price just below $200. Now, they also have a lower priced GigMaker acoustic guitar package including an FG‐335 and a gig bag, digital tuner, strap, extra strings, picks, and an instructional DVD for $160 street price. Fender has an FA‐100 with a gig bag for $100 street price, but I’m not sure about its unit volume. Many acoustic guitar students aspire to go for the Taylor GC Mini 7/8 scale if they can afford $500. For an acoustic guitar with a built‐in pickup (acoustic‐electric), the Ibanez V‐70 owns the $200 street price point. Fender T Bucket 300CE is next at strategic street price of $300‐$350, followed by the Martin X‐1 AE at $500 street price. Martin assembles this guitar in Mexico from Asian parts. I don’t know of any top selling guitars below $500 that are made in the USA. Student Keyboard Market Trends Used acoustic spinet pianos are prevalent for beginners. However, the 40,000 unit per month US electronic market is almost completely dominated by portable keyboards, slab pianos, and MIDI controllers in about equal amounts. My guess is that students taking lessons lean toward the slab pianos, gigging musicians and home desktop music publishing aficionados are buying the MIDI controllers, and the portable keyboards are purchased for fun (maybe older customers). The street price for slab pianos is averaging $700, for MIDI controllers $150, and for portable keyboards $275. Unit brand share for all electronic keyboard categories is Yamaha 38%, Casio 20%, M‐Audio 13%, Akai 8%, Korg 8%, Roland 4%, and the rest 9%. From a sales volume perspective, Roland and Casio are about equal, but Yamaha is out‐selling both by 4‐to‐1. Roland was hit hard during Q2‐Q3 2011 because the retailers had amassed so much keyboard inventory from NAMM purchases that they stopped ordering, especially the higher‐priced brand. The digital piano market is about 30% of the total electronic keyboard market, and is dominated by Yamaha (40% unit), Casio (30%), Korg (10%), and Roland (7%). The $500‐$999 street price range is growing and now represents about half of the piano unit volume. The Yamaha P‐95 and Casio PX‐130 are clearly the leaders in this category and, unlike guitars, the street prices are at the beginning of the category (i.e. $500). So, I think these two products should be studied closely. The MIDI controller market is dominated by M‐Audio (50% unit) and Akai (35%). FYI, Akai, Alesis, and Numark are really one company, and they have been gaining steam over the last year or two. Strangely, they dominate the <$100 market and the >$300 market, while M‐Audio dominates the $100‐$299 market. The Akai MPK Mini ($99 street), M‐Audio KeyRig 49 ($99 street), and M‐Audio Oxygen 49 ($150 street) are the top sellers by unit volume. Casio competes with Yamaha in the portable keyboard market only is the $100‐$199 range (which is about 40% of the market’s unit volume. All other price points, including <$100 are owned by Yamaha. Roland is not on the map in portable keyboards. The unit volume leader in portable keyboards (at 40% is the Yamaha PSRE 233 ($99 street) and the Casio WK‐200 ($150 street), so these should be studied. Brief Analysis of Instrument Amp Market in the US Total USA Market: roughly 720,000 units, or $200M annually. Was 5% down in 2010, but extrapolated to be 5% up in 2011. Type distribution (by units): Electric Guitar (64.7% steady YOY), Bass Guitar (23.9% falling 2 points YOY), Acoustic Guitar (6.4% rising 2 points YOY), Keyboard (5.1% steady YOY) Type distribution (by $): Electric Guitar (63.0%), Bass Guitar (23.0%), Acoustic Guitar (6.3%), Keyboard (7.7%) Other type trends: Combos (head+cabinet together) dominate electric guitar amps (86%), but dominate bass amps less (69%). Type share is relatively constant, but there is a slight uptick in acoustic guitar amps year‐on‐
year. For electric guitar amps, solid state dominates (73.4%), followed by tubes (22.8%), and hybrids (3.8%). Interestingly, there is a slight year‐on‐year gain for solid state amps at the expense of the hybrid amps (not the tube amps). Of course, bass, acoustic, and keyboard amps are almost all solid state. Price point unit share trends: Electric Guitar: Bass Guitar: Acoustic Guitar: Keyboard: <$100 $100‐$199 $200‐$499 $500+ <$100 $100‐$199 $200‐$499 $500+ <$100 $100‐$199 $200‐$499 $500+ <$100 $100‐$199 $200‐$499 $500+ 37% 20% 30% 13% 20% 18% 46% 16% 18% 26% 51% 6% 2% 13% 70% 17% Rising 5 points YOY Falling 3 points YOY Falling 2 points YOY Steady Steady Steady Rising 2 points YOY Falling 2 points YOY Falling 5 points YOY Falling 1 point YOY Rising 9 points YOY Falling 3 points YOY Falling 3 points YOY (noisy data) Falling 5 points YOY Rising 8 points YOY Steady Significant market players (% $ share): Fender (25.6%), Line 6 (8.1%), Roland (7.5%), Marshall (7.5%), Peavey (6.7%), Vox (5.7%), Ampeg (4.1%) Competitive focus: Fender: Hands down leader in electric guitar amps at all price points. Hands down leader in bass guitar amps (2x), except for $500+ price range, which is owned by Ampeg and Gallien‐Krueger. Fender is neck and neck with Roland for acoustic guitar amps, but both are dwarfed by Fishman (2x) in this amp type. Not a competitor at all in keyboard amps. Line 6: Second player in amp market overall, but dwarfed by Fender (3x). Running neck and neck with Roland, Marshall, Peavey, and Vox in amps overall, but slightly better than them in electric guitar amps. Like Fender, Line 6 is strong in the <$500 price points, but unlike Fender, does not compete in the $500+ market. It does not compete in the tube amp market. It does not compete in the bass guitar, acoustic guitar, or keyboard amp markets. Roland: Third place in the MI amp market by unit and dollar volume, but, like Line 6, is dwarfed by Fender (3x). This position is held mainly from keyboard and acoustic guitar amps. They are only in 8th place in electric guitar amps (by comparison Fender sells 7x over Roland in this type of amp). However, they are almost neck and neck with Fender in the $100‐$199 price range in electric guitar amps. They had the 7th best‐selling electric guitar amp (Micro Cube) in May, 2011. They are struggling in the bass amp category, but are third place in the acoustic guitar amp category and virtually own the keyboard amp market (60% by unit volume), with only Behringer (17%) and Peavey (13%) within sight. Marshall: Maintains the 4th overall amp position and 3rd electric guitar amp position in dollar volume, but unit volume is ¼ of Fender’s. They don’t compete in bass or keyboard amps, but do a small business in acoustic guitar amps (5% unit share of this amp type, which happens to be 4th place but dwarfed by Fishman, Fender, and Roland). Peavey: Maintains 3rd place in overall MI amp sales by unit volume and 5th place by dollar volume. Maintains 4th place in electric guitar amps, but, like the others, is dwarfed by Fender (4x). Competes well (3rd place) in <$100 electric guitar amps, currently has the 3rd most popular electric guitar combo amp (Vypyr 15), is 4th place in bass amps (but only 9% of unit volume share and mainly only in the <$100 price point),and is 6th place in acoustic guitar amps overall (but 1rst place in the $100‐$199 price point). Peavey is more competitive in the keyboard amp market, where they hold 3rd position right after Behringer. These two are the only serious competitors of Roland in the keyboard amp business, and this is because they are attacking the <$200 price point. Peavey has a product in the top 10 in every type of amp except for electric guitar amps. Vox: They are 4th place in unit volume and 5th in dollar volume in overall amp sales (still less than ¼ of Fender sales). They are 3rd in electric guitar amps by unit volume, 4th by dollar volume. They are the leader in the hybrid tube+electronics electric guitar market and compete well in the tube amp market (no data). I believe they are the first to use Class D in a guitar amp (acoustic), although they are still not on the radar in acoustic guitar amps. They also do not compete in bass guitar or keyboard amps. Ampeg: Minor player in amps overall, but strong in bass guitar amps at 1st position in dollar volume and 2nd position in unit volume, only following Fender (at 2x). They are especially strong in the$200+ price market, where they lead and compete only with Gallien‐Krueger. Ampeg does not compete in the electric guitar, acoustic guitar, or keyboard amp types. tones. Bask in the glow of your computer while you edit presets, create backups, and even email tones to other
Spider IV players.
Smart FX
Smart FX knobs put award-winning Line 6 effects at your fingertips. Easy to use, Smart FX let you spend less
time tweaking and more time playing. Quickly add or remove any amount of the 20 lush reverbs, exceptional
echoes, tangy mods, and more. Make all your adjustments on the fly—all the knobs are on the front panel. Up to
4 Smart FX can be used simultaneously.
Go deeper into FX
his Line 6 amp lets you deep dive into your effects like never before! Every effect is fully adjustable up to 7
parameters deep, including pre- and post-amplifier routing. Sculpt your delays, mods, reverbs, pitch effects, and
more with unparalleled control.
Spider FX Infusion
What's better than more effects? More effects for free! Spider FX Infusion (a free download from Line6.com)
more than doubles your amount of Smart FX. Beef up your Line 6 Spider IV 75 with 28 additional overdrives,
compressors, delays, reverbs, mods, and wahs. You'll have more effects than any other modeling amplifier.
Pitch effects (Smart Harmony and Pitch Glide)
Smart Harmony is Line 6's first intelligent pitch shifter. It's fast-tracking and easy to use. Harmonize using major,
minor, pentatonic, whole tone, and other types of scales. (Don't worry, you don't need to know music theory to
use Smart Harmony).
Pitch Glide is most effective when used with an optional FBV MkII footcontroller. Use the footpedal to smoothly
shift your tone up or down to any interval within a 4-octave range. The effect can be calibrated to semitones, or
to 10-cent increments to create cool chorus/detuning effects.
Quick loop
Quick Loop is a 14-second sound-on-sound looper that's ideal for writing songs, practicing solos, jamming, and
even dialing in your tone. Easy to use, Quick Loop's controls are all on the front panel. Connect an FBV MkII
footcontroller for handsfree control of the looper functions.
Simultaneous FX
Use up to 8 effects at the same time! Pour on the colors and textures with all 4 Smart FX, set the adjustable
Boost and the Noise Gate, activate Quick Loop, and connect an FBV MkII footcontroller to kick on the
volume/wah pedal. How many other amplifiers can do that?
Speak up
Celestion guitar speakers are world renowned for their exceptional definition, clarity, and feel. And that's just
what they give to Line 6 Spider IV 75. The 1x12" Celestion custom speaker helps clean tones sparkle and sing,
creamy overdrives respond to the intricacies of your picking, and searing brutal tones launch themselves from
the cabinet.
Manual mode
Manual mode draws a more traditional amplifier experience out of Line 6 Spider IV 75 guitar amp. When Manual
mode is activated, all front-panel knobs work independently of one another. (Out of Manual mode, choosing an
amp model may adjust the settings of the other front-panel knobs.)
Stay focused
To get the whole story of Spider IV 75 amplifier, you need to turn one around. It features a perfectly tuned threequarter closed-back speaker cabinet. This provides a tight, punchy, focused response that you can't get from an
open-back guitar speaker cab.
Tune up
You'll always sound your best with the Line 6 guitar amp's built-in tuner. No need for an external tuner or
additional guitar cables, this invaluable tool is integrated into the amp's front panel. Activate the tuner with the
push of a button.
Window to the soul
A large, two-line LCD is your window into Line 6 Spider IV 75. This is where you can deep dive into effects and
adjust their parameters, scroll over 500 presets, see the tuner interface, name your user-created presets, get a
visual representation of where your Smart FX knobs are set, and more.
Downloads and upgrades
Keep your Line 6 Spider IV 75 guitar amp up to date with an FBV MkII footcontroller. Connect the Spider IV 75
to Line6.com via an FBV MkII footcontroller to receiver valuable software and firmware updates and upgrades.
These updates may include new features, presets, or effects for your Line 6 amp.
Foot controllers
FBV Express MkII delivers hands-free channel switching; FBV Shortboard MkII is a full-on remote control. They
both feature a full-sized volume/wah pedal, chromatic tuner display, bright LEDs, durable footswitches and
chassis, and more. They keep you at the foot of the stage instead of tied to the front of your Spider IV 75. They
also feature USB connectivity for keeping your Spider IV 75 up to date. (Footcontrollers sold separately.)

#1 $500+ Electric Guitar Amp
Vox AC15C1
(Celestion)
15W
1 x 12”
MSRP $900.00 Street $599.00
Vox Custom amps offer 2 channels: Normal and Top Boost. Each channel is equipped with its own Volume
control, and the Top Boost channel offers highly interactive Treble and Bass tone controls. This powerful
channel pairing provides an abundance of tone-crafting control, letting you dial in a classic sound that is all your
own.
Both channels rely on the Tone Cut and Volume controls in the Master section. The Tone Cut control operates
in the power stage rather than the preamp stage, allowing an additional degree of tone shaping. The Master
Volume control works in conjunction with the individual volumes of each channel to create just the right degree
of gain staging. By balancing the individual and Master volumes, the Vox Custom Amps can deliver everything
from a clean Vox "chimey" sound to a powerful overdriven tone.
Sound in Motion
You can sweeten the sound of your Custom Series amplifier using the Vox Classic Tremolo effect. Both the
speed and the depth are adjustable, allowing you to generate just the sound you want. A warm Spring Reverb is
also included on all Custom Series guitar amps, adding spaciousness to the sound. All Vox Custom amplifiers
can use the Vox VFS2 footswitch, allowing you to turn the Reverb and Tremolo effects on and off as you
continue to play.
Power Sharing
The Vox AC15C1 combo makes use of 3 x 12AX7 preamp tubes and uses a pair of EL84 tubes to drive a single
12" Celestion G12M Greenback. All guitar amps in the Vox Custom Series offer a switchable 8/16-ohm output
jack for powering an external speaker cabinet when you need to speak with a little more authority; using this
jack will mute the internal speakers. Additionally, a second extension speaker jack allows you to run an extra 16ohm cabinet along with the internal speakers for a fuller sound.

Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue 40W, 1 x 12”
(Eminence)
MSRP $1,049.99 Street $749.99
The Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue 40W 1x12" Combo Amp rocks—
and not just for the blues! In 1993 Fender released the Blues series
amps to great success and acclaim. These modern versions of vintage
Fender amps from the '50s customized those designs with channel switching and reverb while retaining the
vintage style and tone. When the series was updated, the extremely popular Hot Rod series was born and
became a new standard in tube amplification. Now Fender has brought back the Blues designs to satisfy the
increasing number of enthusiasts who continue to request the warm tone, unique circuitry, and vintage-style
features and look of the original versions.
The Blues Deluxe Reissue, a reinterpretation of the classic Deluxe
amp with a tube complement of 3 - 12AX7s and 2 - 6L6s produces
40W into a 12" Eminence special-design speaker with an all-tube
preamp and power amp. It has Normal and Drive channels with
independent Gain and Master for the Drive channel and a Bright
switch for Normal channel. It also has an effects loop, reverb,
presence, master volume, 3-band EQ, and Standby switch. Original
Blues series styling includes a chrome control panel, vintage chicken
head knobs, and, of course, genuine tweed covering.
