THANK YOU FOR PURCHASING
THE YAMAHA NS-500M SPEAKER SYSTEM
Please read this before using your NS-500M
speakers.
® To prevent discoloration or damage to the
cabinet, keep your speakers away from high
temperatures ancl out of direct sunlight.
e When an amplifier with a rated output higher
than the music input of the speaker system is
used, care should be taken never to exceed the
speakers’ music input,
® Connections to the amplifier speaker termin-
als depend on the particular amplifier you are
using. Please check the amplifier owner's manu-
al before making speaker connections.
® [n order to preserve the beauty of the cabinet,
avoid the use of alcohol, benzene, thinner or
insecticides on the cabinet and avoid prolonged
contact with vinyl-based products. When clean-
ing, use a clean, dry cloth.
e The speaker system contains strong mag-
nets; television sets, watches, magnetic tape,
and other magnetic objects should be kept at a
reasonable distarice.
e When the grill is off, avoid touching the
woofer cone or center cap. Any deformation can
cause audible distortion.
e The bass may sound unnatural if the speak-
ers are placed directly on the floor. If this is the
case, raise the speakers off the floor with sturdy
supports, such as speaker stands or concrete
blocks.

e Before connecting
Be sure to turn the power to the amplifier off
before connecting the speakers. Failure to
turn the amplifier off may result in damage to
the amplifier and speakers while connecting
the wires.
Also, note the input impedance of these
speakers is 6 ohms, If these speakers are
connected to a transistor amplifier, the
speakers can be connected with no rela-
tionship to speaker terminal impedance.
However, be sure to connect these speakers
to 6 ohms impedance output terminals when
connecting these speakers to a vacuum tube
amplifier.
e Connection
Connect the accessory speaker cords to the
quick release input terminals on the speaker
back to the speaker output terminals of your
amplifier. Be sure to connect the left channel
of the speaker to the left channel terminal of
the amplifier, similarly connect the right
speaker channel to the right output terminal.
Confirm the polarities of these connections
before turning the power on. tf the polarity of
even just one of these speakers is mistakenly
connected, a low, unnatural sound will be
produced. The included speaker cords are
parallel, red/black encoded. Connect the red
cord to the right (+) terminal of both the
amplifier and speaker, connect the biack
cord to the left (—) terminals of the speaker
and amplifier. If your amplifier has screw-type
output terminals, be sure to securely tighten
the screw.

These controls enable adjustment of the mid-
range and high range output levels according to
the program source and audio characteristics of
the listening room.
Remove the speaker grille for access to the two
level controls. The upper level control (HIGH
LEVEL) is used to regulate high frequency
sounds, while the lower control (MID LEVEL) is
used to regulate the midrange. Each control
produces a flat response when set to the NORM
(normal) position. Turning the controls to the left
decreases the sound pressure level; tuming
them to the right increases the sound pressure
level. Note the HIGH LEVEL can only be
adjusted to decrease the sound pressure level
from the normal position, while the MID LEVEL
can be adjusted to elther increase or decrease
the output level from the normal position.
Before adjusting speaker output with these level
controls, first set all amplifier controls (tone
controls, filters) to the flat response position,
adjust the volume to your usual listening level,
and then proceed to adjust the level controls on
the speakers.
Be sure to first adjust the midrange (MID LEVEL)
and then the high range (HIGH LEVEL) to
produce the desired sound.

The speaker grille is attached to the cabinet at
four points by plug-type latches for easy attach-
ment and removal.
To remove, grasp both sides of the grille at the
bottom and pull out gently. When the bottom is
detached, repeat the procedure at the top.
To attach, line the plugs on the grille up with the
holes in the cabinet and push in gently.
