Morningstar’s innovative TrakStar Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) Technology is an advanced control algorithm that maximizes the energy harvest from the solar array into the battery under all operating conditions. This technology innovation is used in

Morningstar’s SunSaver MPPT and TriStar MPPT controllers and has resulted in the TriStar MPPT controller becoming the world’s leading

MPPT solar controller.

Morningstar’s TrakStar MPPT Technology

With Morningstar’s TrakStar Technology, fast changing maximum power points are quickly tracked during shading conditions or when using mixed module arrays. When power levels change significantly, Morningstar’s MPPT controllers are able to quickly respond to find the true maximum power point and avoid getting stuck on a ‘local’ maximum. Our TrakStar Technology:

• Optimizes solar array operation by differentiating global (total) maximum power operating points from local ones during shading or mixing of solar modules.

• Provides excellent performance at sunrise and low insolation levels

• Delivers the industry’s highest peak power efficiency rating:

• 99% - TriStar MPPT Controller

• 97.5% - SunSaver MPPT Controller

• Performs very rapid sweeping of the solar array I-V curve over the whole converter’s operating range at flexible and adaptive time intervals.

• Sweeps from the battery voltage to the open circuit voltage of the array in less than a second for the TriStar MPPT and SunSaver

MPPT controllers and in less than 1/10 th

of a second for our new TriStar MPPT 600V controller.

TrakStar Advantages

Morningstar’s TrakStar MPPT tracking algorithm provides more accurate and faster performance, which consistently operates the PV array at a real maximum power point. Morningstar’s MPPT controllers deliver high conversion efficiency at all power levels.

• Significantly better in conversion efficiency at lower output levels than similar competing products

• Substantially higher energy production at higher output levels than similar products

Our MPPT controllers feature robust thermal and mechanical design (no fans or frequently moving parts). This, together with our passive convection cooling heatsinks, makes our controllers the industry’s quietest and most reliable while still exhibiting lowest selfconsumption.

Morningstar’s MPPT controllers deliver better production at higher ambient temperatures and will not reduce power or turn off at higher temperatures. Furthermore, our MPPT controllers keep the batteries at the highest state-of-charge (SOC), resulting in better battery health and longer life. A higher SOC equates to better PV system autonomy and more time before a low voltage disconnect.

The TriStar MPPT 600V (TS-MPPT-600V) accepts PV array input up to 600Voc.

It features an advanced digital signal processor and utilizes Morningstar’s TrakStar

MPPT Technology to harvest the maximum available energy from the solar array’s peak power point within the controller’s operating range. This high speed processing technology and control methodology enable the TS-MPPT-600V to sweep from the array’s Voc to the battery voltage in less than one tenth of a second, faster than any competing MPPT controller on the market.

The TS-MPPT-600V’s high voltage capability and flexible design also make several typical application scenarios possible:

• Off-grid PV systems greater than 150 Voc with long wire runs from the array to the controller

• New installation grid-tie PV systems with battery back-up

• Retrofitting string inverter systems to later add battery back-up without changing the PV array configuration

• Off-grid wind systems with battery back-up

The SunSaver Duo is a two battery solar controller with optional remote meter for RVs, caravans and boats.

Two Battery Charging – Solar charge current is shared between two batteries based on a user selectable priority. When one battery is fully charged, all of the charge current flows to the other battery.

Highly Reliable – Epoxy encapsulation protects the controller against dust and high humidity.

Extensive electronic protections, including short circuit, over current and reverse polarity, ensure that the controller will not be damaged by wiring mistakes or overloads.

The SHS and SHS Night Light are low cost controllers for rural electrification solar home systems*.

The SureSine is a pure sine wave inverter for off-grid solar applications requiring AC power. Applications include rural electrification, telecom, remote homes,

RVs, caravans and boats.

Morningstar’s Ground Fault Protection Device (GFPD) is an innovation for ground fault detection and interruption for the photovoltaic (PV) industry. It has greater sensitivity and better isolation while maintaining the bond to earth ground. Ground fault protection is used in electrical systems to prevent current from following any unintended paths during a ground fault. Morningstar’s GFPD has been designed to meet the ground fault protection requirements of the US National Electric Code (NEC) for grounded PV systems.

How it Works: A GFPD needs to detect any stray current and interrupt (break) the circuit until safe operation can be restored. A current imbalance between the primary positive and negative PV conductors entering the controller or inverter may indicate a ground fault condition. Morningstar’s GFPD will detect this condition and break the circuit on both the positive and negative legs. Disconnecting both poles ensures interruption of the ground fault current.

Other ground fault detection/interruption products break the bond to the grounded conductor. When this occurs, not only is the earth bond compromised, but the battery and DC loads can also be left ungrounded and floating. For a negatively grounded system this means that the negative side of the battery and loads can float to negative

Voc in relation to ground and the positive side can float to (negative Voc + Vbat).

Morningstar’s GFPD better isolates the array from the battery and loads, while maintaining the bond to ground.

• Disconnects both the positive and negative conductor and completely isolates PV source circuits

• Trips at 300mA compared to 1A for alternative solutions

• Provides design flexibility to accommodate large and small array configurations

• Uses high quality breaker solutions rather than fuses which are problematic to replace at remote sites

• Works like a traditional AC GFI

• Maintains the integrity of earth bond for battery and loads

• Does not require an extra warning label at the battery per U.S. National Electric Code requirements

• Makes it easier to locate and troubleshoot ground faults

• Powered via the PV System’s battery

• Equipped with both visual and audible alarms

• Built to support both single controller and multiple controllers systems

• When the earth bond is not broken, Morningstar’s GFPD will only shut off affected controllers

• All loads will continue to operate safely with the battery remaining bonded to ground
