Important safety instructions

Your projector is designed and tested to meet the latest standards for safety of information technology equipment. However, to ensure safe use of this product, it is important that you follow the instructions mentioned in this manual and marked on the product.

1. Please read this user manual before you operate your projector. Keep this manual in a safe place for future reference.

4. Do not place the projector in any of the following environments:

- Space that is poorly ventilated or confined.

Allow at least 50 cm clearance from walls and free flow of air around the projector.

- Locations where temperatures may become excessively high, such as the inside of a car with all windows closed.

- Locations where excessive humidity, dust, or cigarette smoke may contaminate optical components, shorten the projector’s lifespan and darken the screen.

2. Always place the projector on a level, horizontal surface during operation.

- Do not place the projector on an unstable cart, stand, or table as it may fall and be damaged.

- Do not place inflammables near the projector.

- Do not use if tilted at an angle of more than 10 degrees left to right, nor at angle of more than 15 degrees front to back.

3. Do not store the projector on end vertically. Doing so may cause the projector to fall over, causing injury or resulting in damage.

- Locations near fire alarms.

- Locations with an ambient temperature above 35°C/95°F.

- Locations where the altitudes are higher than 3000 m (10000 feet).

5. Do not block the vents while the projector is on

(even in standby mode).

- Do not cover the projector with any item.

- Do not place the projector on a blanket, bedding or any other soft surface.

9. Do not look straight into the projector lens during operation. It may harm your sight.

6. In areas where the mains power supply voltage may fluctuate by ±10 volts, it is recommended that you connect the projector through a power stabilizer, surge protector or uninterruptible power supply (UPS) as appropriate to your situation.

10. Do not operate the projector lamp beyond the rated lamp life. Excessive operation of lamps beyond the rated life could cause a lamp to break on rare occasions.

7. Do not step on the projector or place any objects upon it.

11. The lamp becomes extremely hot during operation. Allow the projector to cool for approximately 45 minutes prior to removing the lamp assembly for replacement.

8. Do not place liquids near or on the projector.

Liquids spilled into the projector will void your warranty. If the projector does become wet, disconnect it from the power outlet and contact

BenQ to have the projector repaired.

12. Never attempt to replace the lamp assembly until the projector has cooled down and is unplugged from the power supply.

13. This projector is capable of displaying inverted images for ceiling mount installation. Use only

BenQ's Ceiling Mount Kit for mounting.

15. When you think service or repair is required, take the projector only to a suitably qualified technician.

If you intend to mount your projector on the ceiling, we strongly recommend that you use a proper fitting

BenQ projector ceiling mount kit and ensure it is securely and safely installed.

If you use a non-BenQ brand projector ceiling mount kit, there is a safety risk that the projector may fall from the ceiling due to an improper attachment through the use of the wrong gauge or length screws.

You can purchase a BenQ projector ceiling mount kit from the place you purchased your BenQ projector.

BenQ recommends that you also purchase a separate

Kensington lock compatible security cable and attach it securely to both the Kensington lock slot on the projector and the base of the ceiling mount bracket.

This will perform the secondary role of restraining the projector should its attachment to the mounting bracket become loose.

14. Do not attempt to disassemble this projector.

There are dangerous high voltages inside which may cause death if you should come into contact with live parts. The only user serviceable part is the lamp. See page

50

.

Under no circumstances should you ever undo or remove any other covers. Refer servicing only to suitably qualified professional service personnel.

Never operate the projector immediately after moving it from a cold location to a hot location.

When the projector is exposed to such a change in temperature, moisture may condense on the crucial internal parts. To prevent the projector from possible damage, do not use the projector for at least 2 hours when there is a sudden change in temperature.

Avoid volatile liquids

Do not use volatile liquids, such as insecticide or certain types of cleaner, near the projector. Do not have rubber or plastic products touching the projector for a long time. They will leave marks on the finish. If cleaning with a chemically treated cloth, be sure to follow the cleaning product’s safety instructions.

Disposal

This product contains the following materials which are harmful to human bodies and environment.

• Lead, which is contained in solder.

• Mercury, which is used in the lamp.

To dispose of the product or used lamps, consult your local environment authorities for regulations.

Please keep the original packing for possible future shipment. If you need to pack your projector after use, adjust the projection lens to an appropriate position, put the lens cushion around the lens, and fit the lens cushion and projector cushion together to prevent damage during transportation.

Overview

Projector features

The projector is compatible with Standard Definition TV (SDTV) 480i, 576i, Enhanced Definition television (EDTV) 480p, 576p and High Definition TV (HDTV) 720p, 1080i/p 60Hz formats, with the

1080p format providing a true 1:1 image reproduction.

• High picture quality

The projector provides excellent picture quality due to its high resolution, excellent home theater brightness, high contrast ratio, vivid color and rich gray-scale reproduction.

• Vivid color reproduction

The projector features a 6-segment color wheel to produce realistic color depth and range unattainable with lesser segment color wheels.

• Cinema (Rec. 709)

The mode complements the worldwide HDTV standard with accurate color and deepest contrast at lower brightness level, and is suitable for playing movies in a totally dark environment, as if in a commercial cinema.

When viewed in a dark environment, the automatic gamma control provides excellent gray-scale display which reveals details in shadows and in night or dark scenes.

Two types of OSD menus are designed for different usage scenarios: the Basic OSD is intuitive and easy, while the Advanced OSD offers full range of advanced adjustments.

• Wide variety of inputs and video formats

The projector supports a wide variety of inputs for connection to your video and computer equipment, including component video, composite video, personal computer (both Mac and PC),

HDMI source, and an output trigger for connection to automated screen and environment lighting systems.

• ISF certified calibration control

To reach a higher standard of performance, the projector incorporates ISF NIGHT and ISF DAY mode settings in its OSD menus, which requires professional calibration service from authorized ISF installers.

To enjoy the 3D movies, videos, and sporting events in a more realistic way by presenting the depth of the images through HDMI.

• Built-in chamber speakers with audio enhancer

Built-in speakers providing mixed mono audio when an audio input is connected.

The intuitive control over lens shift wheel provides flexibility in setting-up your projector.

• SmartEco

SmartEco™ technology saves lamp power consumption up to 70% depending on the content brightness level when SmartEco mode is selected.

Used to blank the screen picture.

13. SOURCE

Displays the source selection bar.

14. Picture quality adjustment keys

These function keys perform the same tasks as specified in the OSD menu.

10 Overview

Installing/replacing the remote control batteries

1. Press and slide open the battery cover as illustrated.

2. Remove the old batteries (if applicable) and install two AAA batteries. Make sure that the positive and negative ends are positioned correctly as illustrated.

3. Slide the battery cover back until it clicks into place.

• Avoid leaving the remote control and batteries in an excessive heat or humid environment like the kitchen, bathroom, sauna, sunroom or in a closed car.

• Replace only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the battery manufacturer.

• Dispose of the used batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions and local environment regulations for your region.

• Never throw the batteries into a fire. There may be danger of an explosion.

• If the batteries are drained or if you will not be using the remote control for an extended period of time, remove the batteries to avoid damage to the remote control from possible battery leakage.

Remote control effective range

The remote control must be held at an angle within 30 degrees perpendicular to the projector's IR remote control sensor(s) to function correctly. The distance between the remote control and the sensor(s) should not exceed 8 meters (~ 26 feet).

Make sure that there are no obstacles between the remote control and the IR sensor(s) on the projector.

Installation

Choosing a location

Before choosing an installation location for your projector, take the following factors into consideration:

• Size and position of your screen

• Electrical outlet location

• Location and distance between the projector and the rest of your equipment

You can install your projector in the following ways.

1. Front:

Select this location with the projector placed near the floor in front of the screen.

This is the most common way to position the projector for quick setup and portability.

Turn on the projector and make the following settings:

Obtaining a preferred projected image size

The projected image size is determined by the distance from the projector lens to the screen, the zoom setting, and the video format.

All measurements are approximate and may vary from the actual sizes. If you want a permanent installation of the projector, we recommend that you use the actual projector to physically test the projection size, distance, and the projector's optical characteristics prior to the installation. This helps you determine the exact mounting position which best suits your installation.

Shifting the projection lens vertically

The vertical lens shift control provides flexibility for installing your projector. It allows the projector to be positioned slightly above or below the top level of the projected images.

The lens shift (offset) is expressed as a percentage of the projected image height. Use the wheel to shift the projection lens upwards or downwards within the allowable range depending on your desired image position.

Connection

When connecting a signal source to the projector, be sure to:

1. Turn all equipment off before making any connections.

2. Use the correct signal cables for each source.

3. Make sure the cables are firmly inserted.

• In the connection illustrations shown below, some cables may not be included with the projector (see

Shipping contents ). They are commercially available from electronics stores.

Connecting with video equipment

You need only connect the projector to a video source device using just one of the connecting methods.

Each video source provides different picture quality. The method you choose most likely depends upon the availability of matching terminals on both the projector and the video source device as described below:

Connecting HDMI devices

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) supports uncompressed video data transmission between compatible devices like DTV tuners, DVD players, Blu-ray players and displays over a single cable. You should use an HDMI cable when making a connection between the projector and HDMI devices.

Connecting smart devices

The projector can display contents directly from an MHL compatible smart device. Using an HDMI to

Micro USB cable or HDMI to Micro USB adaptor, you can connect your smart devices to the projector and then enjoy your contents on the big screen.

Some smart devices may not be compatible to the cable that you use. Please consult the manufacturer of your smart device for detailed information.

• Using an HDMI to Micro USB cable

1. Connect one end of the HDMI to Micro USB cable to the HDMI input connector on the projector.

2. Connect the other end of the HDMI to Micro USB cable to the Micro USB output socket on your smart device.

• Using an HDMI to Micro USB adaptor and an HDMI cable

1. Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the HDMI input connector on the projector.

2. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to the HDMI input socket on the adaptor.

3. Connect the other end of the adaptor to the Micro USB output socket on your smart device.

After connections, switch to the HDMI2/MHL input source. To switch input signal, see Selecting an input source

for details.

The RCA type component video jacks are provided for connection to component video output devices.

If the selected video image is not displayed after the projector is turned on and the correct video source has been selected, check if the video source device is turned on and operating correctly.

Many laptops do not turn on their external video ports when connected to a projector. Usually a key combination like Fn + F3 or CRT/LCD key turns the external display on/off. Locate a function key labeled

CRT/LCD or a function key with a monitor symbol on the laptop. Press Fn and the labeled function key simultaneously. Refer to your laptop

Connecting a wireless Full HD Kit (WDP02)

The next generation of Wireless Full HD kit is available from the place you purchased the projector.

The projector is designed to accommodate a receiver by which the projector receives a signal from a transmitter and displays transmitted images. Refer to the illustrations below for a quick connection of the wireless transmission device.

1. Turn the power off and disconnect the projector from the power outlet. If the lamp is hot, avoid burns by waiting for approximately 45 minutes until the lamp has cooled.

2. Loosen the screws that secure the lamp cover on the top of the projector until the lamp cover loosens.

6. Connect appropriate AV equipment to the transmitter.

3. Remove the lamp cover from the projector.

4. Place the receiver into the compartment, and press it backwards and then downwards until it clicks into place.

5. Plug the HDMI cable and USB Mini-B cable to the receiver.

7. Power on the projector and switch to the

HDMI3/MHL input source.

8. For more operation details, refer to the user manual of the Wireless Full HD Kit (WDP02).

There will be customized firmware released for the

W2000 after the WDP02 is launched in 2016. It will provide more integrated functions to operate the

WDP02 along with the W2000. Please contact your local BenQ service center to update the firmware of your projector should you need it.

* About the HDMI cable

The HDMI cable is also compatible with MHL devices. You need just to use an HDMI female to female adaptor (shorter than 4.0 cm) and a wireless

MHL smart dongle (shorter than 7.9 cm) (e.g. Roku streaming stick). The projector is ready to project streaming video from the dongle wirelessly. Note that if the projector’s firmware is updated to the customized version as mentioned above, the HDMI cable will not be compatible with MHL devices.

18 Connection

Operation

Starting up the projector

1. Plug the power cable into the projector and a power outlet. Turn on the power outlet switch (where fitted). The POWER

indicator light on the projector lights orange after power has been applied.

Please use the supplied power cable to avoid possible dangers such as electric shock and fire.

2. Press on the projector or on the remote control to start the projector. As soon as the lamp lights up, a Power On Tone will be heard. The POWER indicator light flashes green and stays green when the projector is on.

The fans start operating, and a start-up image is displayed on the screen while it warms up. The projector does not respond to further commands while it is warming up.

To turn off the ring tone, see Power On/Off Ring Tone for details.

3. If this is the first time you turn on the projector, the setup wizard appears to guide you through setting up the projector. If you have already done this, skip this step and move on to step 5.

4. If you are prompted to enter the password, use the arrow keys on the projector or remote control

to enter a six-digit password. See Utilizing the password function for details.

5. Switch on the connected equipment.

6. The projector starts to search for available input signals. The current input signal being scanned is displayed on the screen. If the projector does not detect a valid signal, the "No Signal" message appears. You may press SOURCE on the projector or remote control to select your desired input signal.

7. If the horizontal frequency of the input source exceeds the range of the projector, the "No Signal" message is displayed on the screen. It will remain on-screen until you change the horizontal frequency of the input source to an appropriate one.

Shutting down the projector

1. Press on the projector or confirmation message.

The POWER indicator light flashes orange and the fans run for about two minutes to cool the lamp. The projector doesn’t respond to any commands during the cooling process.

3. When the cooling process ends, a "Power Off Ring Tone" will be heard, and the POWER indicator light will show a solid orange.

To turn off the ring tone, see Power On/Off Ring Tone for details.

If the projector will not be used for an extended period, unplug the power cable from the power outlet.

Avoid turning on the projector immediately after turning it off as excessive heat may shorten lamp life. The actual lamp life may vary due to different environmental conditions and usage.

Securing the projector

Using a security cable lock

The projector has to be installed in a safe place to prevent theft. Otherwise, purchase a lock, such as the

Kensington lock, to secure the projector. You can locate a Kensington lock slot on the projector. See item

29 on page 8 for details.

A Kensington security cable lock is usually a combination of key(s) and the lock. Refer to the lock's documentation to learn how to use it.

Utilizing the password function

For security purposes and to prevent unauthorized use, you may set up password security via the On-

Screen Display (OSD) menu. Once the password is set and the function is enabled, the projector is password-protected. Users who do not know the correct password may not use the projector.

You will be inconvenienced if you enable the password function yet forget the password somehow. Do make a note of your password, and keep the note in a safe place for later recall.

Setting a password

Once a password has been set and the power on lock is enabled, the projector cannot be used unless the correct password is entered every time the projector is started.

To do this, first and foremost, you have to access the Advanced OSD menu (see page 28 for details).

1. Go to System Setup : Advanced > Password

3. As the window indicates, the four arrow keys ( / / / ) respectively represent 4 digits (1, 2, 3, 4).

Use the arrow keys on the projector or remote control to set a six-digit password. The digits are displayed as ****** when you enter them.

4. Re-enter the same password to verify and return to the Password window.

5. Select Power On Lock and use / to set On.

6. Enter the current password to enable the function.

7. Press BACK to save your changes and exit.

If you forget the password

If you enable the password function, you’ll have to enter your password each time you turn on the projector. Once you enter an incorrect password, the error message is displayed, and the Input

Password window follows.

If you have entered an incorrect password 5 times in succession, the projector will automatically shut down in a short time.

3. Seek help from the local BenQ service center to decode the number. You may be required to provide proof of purchase documentation to verify that you are an authorized user of the projector.

The "XXX" shown in the above messages are numbers that vary depending on different models.

Changing the password

To do this, first and foremost, you have to access the Advanced OSD menu (see page 28 for details).

1. Go to System Setup : Advanced > Password to display the Password window.

2. Select Change Password and press OK to display the Input Current Password window.

• If the password is correct, the Input New Password window is displayed.

• If the password is incorrect, the password error message is displayed, and the Input Current

Password window appears for your retry. You can either try another password or press

Do make a note of your password, and then keep the note in a safe place for later recall.

6. You have successfully set a new password. Remember to enter the new password next time you turn on the projector.

7. Press BACK to save your changes and exit.

Disabling the password function

To do this, first and foremost, you have to access the Advanced OSD menu (see page 28 for details).

1. Go to System Setup : Advanced > Password

to display the Password window.

2. Select Power On Lock and use / to set Off.

3. Enter the current password.

• If the password is correct, the Password window displays that Power On Lock is Off. You will not be asked to enter the password next time you turn on the projector.

• If the password is incorrect, the password error message is displayed, and then the Input

Password window is displayed for your retry. You can either try another password or press

BACK to cancel the change.

4. Press BACK to save your changes and exit.

Though the password function is disabled, you need to keep a note of the old password in case you ever need to re-activate the password function by entering the old password.

Selecting an input source

The projector can be connected to multiple equipment at the same time. However, it only displays one full screen at a time. When starting up, the projector automatically searches for the available signals.

If you want the projector to always automatically search for the signals:

Once detected, the selected source information is displayed on the screen for seconds. If there are multiple pieces of equipment connected to the projector, repeat steps 1-2 to search for another signal.

The native display resolution of this projector is in a 16:9 aspect ratio. For best display picture results, you should select and use an input signal which outputs at this resolution. Any other resolutions will be scaled by the projector depending upon the Aspect Ratio setting, which may cause some image distortion or loss of picture clarity. See "

Aspect Ratio " for details.

Renaming an input source

You may rename the current input source on the source selection bar.

To do this, first and foremost, you have to access the Advanced OSD menu (see page 28 for details).

1. Press MENU and then use / to go to System Setup : Basic.

2. Press to select Source Rename and press OK to display the Source Rename window.

3. Press / / / until your desired character is selected.

4. When done, press BACK to save your changes and exit.

Adjusting the projected image

Adjusting the projection angle

The projector is equipped with a quick-release adjuster foot and two rear adjuster feet. These adjusters change the image height and projection angle.

To adjust the projection angle:

1. Press the quick-release button and lift the front of the projector. Once the image is positioned as desired, release the quick-release button to lock the foot in position.

2. Screw the rear adjuster feet to fine-tune the horizontal angle.

To retract the foot, hold up the projector while pressing the quick-release button, then slowly lower the projector. Screw the rear adjuster foot in a reverse direction.

If the screen and the projector are not perpendicular to each other, the projected image becomes vertical trapezoidal. To

correct this, see Correcting keystone for details.

Do not look into the lens while the lamp is on. The strong light from the lamp may cause damage to your eyes.

Be careful when you press the quick-release button as it is close to the exhaust vent where hot air comes from.

Auto-adjusting the image

In some cases, you may wish to optimize the picture quality of PC signal. To do this, press AUTO on the projector or remote control. Within 3 seconds, the built-in Intelligent Auto Adjustment function will readjust the values of Frequency and Clock to provide the best picture quality.

The current input source information will be displayed in the corner of the screen for 3 seconds.

This function is only available when PC signal is selected.

Fine-tuning the image size and clarity

• To adjust the projected picture size:

i. Slide open the lens compartment cover

(see item 6 on page 8 ).

ii. Turn the zoom ring to zoom in or zoom out.

iii. Slide close the lens compartment cover when you complete the adjustments.

• To sharpen the picture:

i. Slide open the lens compartment cover

(see item 6 on page 8 ).

ii. Rotate the focus ring to achieve a sharper focus.

iii. Slide close the lens compartment cover when you complete the adjustments.

Correcting keystone

Keystoning refers to the situation where the projected image is noticeably wider at either the top or bottom. It occurs when the projector is not perpendicular to the screen.

To correct this, besides adjusting the height of the projector, you may correct this manually in ONE of these ways:

Bright: Maximizes the brightness of the projected image. This mode is suitable for environments where extra-high brightness is required, such as using the projector in well lit rooms.

Vivid: With well-saturated color, fine-tuned sharpness and a higher brightness level, this is perfect for watching movies in a living room where there is a small amount of ambient light.

Cinema (REC. 709): Complements the worldwide HDTV standard with accurate color and deepest contrast at lower brightness level. This mode is suitable for playing movies in a totally dark environment, as if in a commercial cinema. To easily enjoy the cinematic color retrieved from REC. 709 standard, we recommend you shadow all possible lighting items except the projector (e.g. lamps, computer screen, or light coming through curtains) and use a standard format of 1080p image source like a Blu-ray disc to get the best viewing experience under this mode.

Game: This mode is best for playing video games in rooms where there is a small amount of ambient light, eg. your living room.

3D: Optimized to bring up 3D effects when watching 3D contents.

This mode is only available when 3D function is enabled.

User 1/User 2: Recalls the customized settings. Access the Advanced OSD menu and see

Sound Mode function utilizes MaxxAudio sound enhancement technology, which incorporates Waves’s algorithms to deliver great effects of the bass and treble and provide you with immersive cinematic audio experience. The following preset sound modes are provided: Standard, Cinema, Music, Sport, Game, and User.

The User mode allows you to personalize the sound settings. Access the Advanced

OSD menu and see User EQ

for details.

If the Mute function is activated, adjusting Sound Mode will turn off the Mute function.

Adjusts the volume level of the projector's internal speaker or the volume being output from the audio output jack.

If the Mute function is activated, adjusting Volume will turn off the Mute function.

The function is accessible through the remote control.

Select On to temporarily turn off the projector's internal speaker or the volume being output from the audio output jack.

To restore the audio, select Off.

The function is accessible through the remote control.

This projector supports playing three-dimensional (3D) content transferred through your 3D-compatible video devices and contents, such as PlayStation consoles (with

3D game discs), 3D Blu-ray players (with 3D Blu-ray discs), 3D TV (with 3D channel), and so on. After you have connected the 3D video devices to the projector, wear the

BenQ 3D glasses and make sure the power is on to view 3D contents.

When watching 3D contents,

• the image may seem misplaced, however, this is not a product malfunction.

• take appropriate breaks when watching 3D content.

• stop watching 3D content if you feel fatigue or discomfort.

• keep a distance from the screen of about three times the effective height of the screen.

• children and people with a history of oversensitivity to light, heart problems, or any other existing medical condition should be refrained from watching 3D contents.

The higher the value, the more reddish the picture becomes. The lower the value, the more greenish the picture becomes.

Adjust to make the picture look sharper or softer.

The higher the value, the sharper the picture becomes. The lower the value, the softer the picture becomes.

The options available for color temperature* settings vary according to the connected input signal.

Lamp Native: With the lamp’s original color temperature and higher brightness. This setting is suitable for environments where high brightness is required, such as projecting pictures in well lit rooms.

Warm: Makes pictures appear reddish white.

Normal: Maintains normal colorings for white.

Cool: Makes pictures appear bluish white.

*About color temperatures:

There are many different shades that are considered to be “white” for various purposes. One of the common methods of representing white color is known as the

“color temperature”. A white color with a low color temperature appears to be reddish white. A white color with a high color temperature appears to have more blue in it.

Black Level

Sets the picture grayscale to 0 IRE or 7.5 IRE.

The grayscale video signal is measured in IRE units. In some areas which use NTSC TV standard, the grayscale is measured from 7.5 IRE (black) to 100 IRE (white); however, in other areas where PAL equipment or Japanese NTSC standards are used, the grayscale is measured from 0 IRE (black) to 100 IRE (white). We suggest you to check if the input source is with 0 IRE or with 7.5 IRE, and then make your selection accordingly.

Gamma Selection

Gamma refers to the relationship between input source and picture brightness.

1.6/1.8/2.0/2.1/BenQ: Select these values according to your preference.

2.2/2.3: Increases the average brightness of the picture. Best for a lit environment, meeting room or family room.

2.4: Best for viewing movies in a dark environment.

Brilliant Color

This function utilizes a new color-processing algorithm and system level enhancements to enable higher brightness while providing truer, more vibrant colors in picture. It enables a greater than 50% brightness increase in mid-tone images, which are common in video and natural scenes, so the projector reproduces images in realistic and true colors. If you prefer images with that quality, select On. Selecting Off disables Brilliant Color, and Color Temperature becomes unavailable for access at the same time.

Color Temperature Fine Tuning

Allows you to manually adjust the pre-defined color temperature modes:

1. Press OK to display the Color Temperature Fine Tuning window.

2. Press / to select the item(s) you want to make changes and use / to adjust the values.

Red Gain/Green Gain/Blue Gain: Adjusts the contrast levels of Red, Green, and Blue.

Red Offset/Green Offset/Blue Offset: Adjusts the brightness levels of Red,

Green, and Blue.

3. When done, press BACK to save your changes and exit.

Color Management

In most installation situations, color management is not necessary, such as in classroom, meeting room, or lounge room situations where lights remain on, or where building external windows allow daylight into the room.

Only in permanent installations with controlled lighting levels, such as boardrooms, lecture theaters, or home theaters, should color management be considered. Color management provides fine color control adjustment to allow for more accurate color reproduction.

Proper color management can be achieved under controlled and reproducible viewing conditions. Use a colorimeter (color light meter) and provide a set of suitable source images to measure color reproduction. These tools are not provided with the projector, however, your projector supplier should be able to give guidances or send an experienced professional installer for you.

The Color Management function provides six sets (RGBCMY) of colors to be adjusted. You can select any of them to adjust its color range and saturation.

1. Press OK to display the Color Management window.

2. Select Primary Color and use / to select a color from Red, Green, Blue,

Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow.

3. Press to select Hue and use / to set its range. Increase in the range will include colors consisted of more proportions of its two adjacent colors.

The illustration shows how the colors relate to each other.

For example, if you select Red and set its range at 0, only pure red is selected. Increasing its range will include both the red color close to yellow and red color close to magenta.

4. Press to select Saturation* and use / to adjust its values. Every adjustment made reflects to the image immediately. For example, if you select

Red and set its value at 0, only the saturation of pure red will be affected.

5. Press to select Gain and use / to adjust its values. The contrast level of the primary color you just selected are affected. Every adjustment made reflects to the image immediately.

6. Repeat steps 2 to 5 until you have made all of the desired adjustments.

7. When done, press BACK to save your changes and exit.

*About saturation

It is the amount of that color in a video picture. Lower settings produce less saturated colors; a setting of “0” removes that color from the image entirely. If the saturation is too high, that color will be overpowering and unrealistic.

The function is accessible through the remote control.

Reduces electrical image noise caused by different media players. The higher the value, the less the noise.

Enhances picture quality when projecting composite image from a filmsourced DVD or Blu-ray Disc. Setting Off disables the function.

Sound Mode function utilizes MaxxAudio sound enhancement technology, which incorporates Waves’s algorithms to deliver great effects of the bass and treble and provide you with immersive cinematic audio experience. The following preset sound modes are provided: Standard, Cinema, Music, Sport, Game, and User.

The User mode allows you to personalize the sound settings. When selecting the

User mode, you may make manual adjustments with the User EQ function.

If the Mute function is activated, adjusting Sound Mode will turn off the Mute function.

In the following illustrations, the black portions are inactive areas and the white portions are active areas.

Scales a picture proportionally to fit the projector's native resolution in its horizontal or vertical width.

This makes the most use of the screen and maintains the aspect ratio of a picture.

4:3

Scales the picture so that it is displayed in the center of the screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The top and bottom edges of the displayed picture are cropped. This suits the contents which are produced in letter box format (with black bars on the top and bottom).

Enable this function to help correct the projected picture’s color when the projection surface is not white. You may choose a color similar to that of the projection surface from these options: Light Yellow, Pink, Light Green, or Blue.

Displays the Image Position window. You may use the directional arrow keys on the projector or remote control to adjust the position of the projected picture.

The values shown on the lower position of the window change with every key press you made.

This function is only available when the PC signal is selected.

Conceals the poor picture quality in the four edges.

The greater the value, the more portion of the picture is concealed while the screen remains filled and geometrically accurate. Setting 0 means the picture is 100% displayed.

3D game discs), 3D Blu-ray players (with 3D Blu-ray discs), 3D TV (with 3D channel), and so on. After you have connected the 3D video devices to the projector, wear the

BenQ 3D glasses and make sure the power is on to view 3D contents.

When watching 3D contents,

• the image may seem misplaced, however, this is not a product malfunction.

• take appropriate breaks when watching 3D content.

• stop watching 3D content if you feel fatigue or discomfort.

• keep a distance from the screen of about three times the effective height of the screen.

• children and people with a history of oversensitivity to light, heart problems, or any other existing medical condition should be refrained from watching

3D contents.

The following functions help enhance your 3D viewing experience.

When you connect an HDMI CEC-compatible device to your projector with an

HDMI cable, turning on the HDMI CEC compatible device automatically turns on the projector, while turning off the projector automatically turns off the

HDMI CEC compatible device. You can use the projector’s remote control to

control your HDMI CEC-compatible devices. See item 17 on page 10 for

details.

Select a baud rate that is identical with your computer’s so that you can connect the projector with a suitable RS-232 cable and update or download the projector’s firmware. This function is intended for qualified service personnel.

Enable this function to display the grid test pattern, which helps you adjust the image size and focus so as to check if the projected image is free of distortion.

Closed Caption Enable

Activate the function by selecting On when the selected input signal carries closed captions*.

*About caption

An on-screen display of the dialogue, narration, and sound effects of TV programs and videos that are closed captioned (usually marked as "CC" in TV listings).

Caption Version

Select a preferred closed captioning mode. To view captions, select CC1, CC2,

CC3, or CC4 (CC1 displays captions in the primary language in your area).

Select On to shorten the projector cooling time from a normal 90-second duration to approximately 15 seconds.

ISF

The mode is for operation in areas like high altitude or high temperature environments. Activate the function when your environment is between 1500 m

–3000 m above sea level and ambient temperature is between 0°C–30°C.

Do not use this function if your altitude is between 0 m and 1500 m and ambient temperature is between 0°C and 35°C. If you turn on the mode under such a condition, the projector will be over cooled.

Operation under High Altitude Mode may cause a higher decibel operating noise level because of increased fan speed necessary to improve overall system cooling and performance.

If you use this projector under other extreme conditions excluding the above, it may display auto shut-down symptoms, which is designed to protect your projector from over-heating. In cases like this, you should switch to High

Altitude Mode to solve these symptoms. However, this is not to state that this projector can operate under any and all harsh or extreme conditions.

For security purposes and to prevent unauthorized use, you may set up password security for the projector. See

Utilizing the password function

for details.

Change Password

You will be asked to enter the current password before changing to a new one.

Power On Lock

Limits use of the projector to only those who know the correct password.

With the control keys on the projector locked, you can prevent your projector settings from being changed accidentally (by children, for example).

When you select On to enable this function, no control keys on the projector will function, except POWER.

To unlock the keys, press and hold on the projector for 3 seconds.

When you select On, all LED indicators on the projector function normally. See

Indicators

for more details.

When you select Off, the LED indicators ( , , ) are off after you turn on the projector and the splash screen is displayed. However, if the projector is not working properly, the LED indicators light or flash to remind you that a problem may occur. See also

Indicators for more details.

Returns all settings to the factory preset values. The OSD menu type will return to the Basic OSD menu.

The following settings will still remain: Keystone, Language, Projector

Position, Reset Lamp Timer, High Altitude Mode, Password, Key Lock, and ISF.

The ISF calibration menu is password protected and only accessible by authorized ISF calibrators. The ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) has developed carefully crafted, industry-recognized standards for optimal video performance and has implemented a training program for technicians and installers to use these standards to obtain optimal picture quality from BenQ video display devices. Accordingly, we recommend that setup and calibration be performed by an ISF certified installation technician.

Maintenance

Care of the projector

Your projector needs little maintenance. The only thing you have to do on a regular basis is keep the lens clean.

Never remove any parts of the projector except the lamp. Contact your dealer or local customer service center if the projector fails to operate as expected.

Cleaning the lens

Clean the lens whenever you notice dirt or dust on the surface.

Before cleaning any part of the projector, turn it off using the proper shutdown procedure (see Shutting down the projector ), unplug the power cable, and let it cool down completely.

• Use a canister of compressed air to remove dust.

• If there is dirt or smears, use lens-cleaning paper or moisten a soft cloth with lens cleaner and gently wipe the lens surface.

• Never use any type of abrasive pad, alkaline/acid cleaner, scouring powder, or volatile solvent, such as alcohol, benzene, thinner or insecticide. Using such materials or maintaining prolonged contact with rubber or vinyl materials may result in damage to the projector surface and cabinet material.

Never touch the lens with your finger or rub the lens with abrasive materials. Even paper towels can damage the lens coating. Only ever use a proper photographic lens brush, cloth, and cleaning solution. Do not attempt to clean the lens while the projector is switched on or is still hot from previous use.

Cleaning the projector case

Before cleaning any part of the projector, turn it off using the proper shutdown procedure (see Shutting down the projector ), unplug the power cable, and let it cool down completely.

• To remove dirt or dust, wipe the case with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.

• To remove stubborn dirt or stains, moisten a soft cloth with water and a neutral detergent. Then wipe the case.

Never use wax, alcohol, benzene, thinner or other chemical detergents. These can damage the case.

Storing the projector

To store the projector for an extended time:

• Make sure the temperature and humidity of the storage area are within the recommended range for

the projector. Refer to Specifications

or consult your dealer about the range.

• Retract the adjuster feet.

• Remove the batteries from the remote control.

• Pack the projector in its original packing or equivalent.

Transporting the projector

It is recommended that you ship the projector with its original packing or equivalent.

Lamp information

Getting to know the lamp hour

When the projector is in operation, the duration (in hours) of lamp usage is automatically calculated by the built-in timer.

Total (equivalent) lamp hour = 2.0 x (hours used in Normal mode) + 1.4 x (hours used in Economic mode) + 1.0 x (hours used in SmartEco mode)

To obtain the lamp hour information:

1. Press MENU and then use the arrow keys ( / / / ) to go to Information (while under the

Basic OSD menu) or Settings

> Information (while under the Advanced OSD menu).

2. The Lamp Usage Time information is displayed.

3. Press BACK to exit.

Setting Auto Off

This function allows the projector to turn off automatically if no input source is detected after a set period of time.

1. Under the Advanced OSD menu, go to System Setup : Basic > Auto Off.

2. Press / to select a time period. If the preset time lengths are not suitable for your presentation, select Disable, and the projector will not automatically shut down in a certain time period.

3. When done, press BACK to save your changes and exit.

Timing of replacing the lamp

When the Lamp indicator lights up red or a message appears suggesting it is time to replace the lamp, please install a new lamp or consult your dealer. An old lamp may cause a malfunction in the projector and in some instances the lamp may explode. Go to http://www.BenQ.com

for how to purchase a replacement lamp.

The LAMP indicator light and TEMP warning light will light up if the lamp becomes too hot. Turn the power off and let the projector cool for 45 minutes. If the LAMP or TEMP indicator still lights up after turning the power back on, please contact your dealer. See

Indicators for details.

Please replace the lamp when the following lamp warning messages appear.

The illustrations show the examples of messages you will see under the Basic menu. They are for reference only and may differ from the actual design and the menu type you’ve selected.

Replacing the lamp

• To reduce the risk of electrical shock, always turn the projector off and disconnect the power cable before changing the lamp.

• To reduce the risk of severe burns, allow the projector to cool for at least 45 minutes before replacing the lamp.

• To reduce the risk of injuries to fingers and damage to internal components, use caution when removing lamp glass that has shattered into sharp pieces.

• To reduce the risk of injuries to fingers and/or compromising image quality by touching the lens, do not touch the empty lamp compartment when the lamp is removed.

• This lamp contains mercury. Consult your local hazardous waste regulations to dispose of this lamp in a proper manner.

• To assure optimal performance from the projector, it is recommended that you purchase a qualified projector lamp for lamp replacement.

• If lamp replacement is performed while the projector is suspended upside-down from the ceiling, make sure that no one is underneath the lamp socket to avoid any possible injury or damage to the human eyes caused by fractured lamp.

• Ensure good ventilation when handling broken lamps. We recommend that you use respirators, safety glasses, goggles or face shield and wear protective clothing such as gloves.

1. Turn the power off and disconnect the projector from the power outlet. If the lamp is hot, avoid burns by waiting for approximately 45 minutes until the lamp has cooled.

2. Loosen the screws that secure the lamp cover on the top of the projector until the lamp cover loosens.

3. Remove the lamp cover from the projector.

4. Confirm a position of the lamp protection film to put a new film on the same position later, then remove and dispose of the lamp protection film.

• Do not turn the power on with the lamp cover removed.

• Do not insert your fingers between the lamp and the projector as the sharp edges inside the projector may cause injuries.

5. Disconnect the lamp connector from the projector as illustrated.

6. Loosen the screw that secures the lamp.

7. Lift the handle so that it stands up.

8. Use the handle to slowly pull the lamp out of the projector.

• Pulling it too quickly may cause the lamp to break and scatter broken glass in the projector.

• Do not place the lamp in locations where water might splash on it, children can reach it, or near flammable materials.

• Do not insert your hands into the projector after the lamp is removed. If you touch the optical components inside, it could cause color unevenness and distortion of the projected images.

9. As shown in the illustration, lower the new lamp.

10. Reconnect the lamp connector.

11. Tighten the screw that secures the lamp.

12. Ensure the handle is fully laid flat and locked in place.

• Loose screws may cause a bad connection, which could result in malfunction.

• Do not over tighten the screw.

15. Connect the power and restart the projector.

16. After the startup logo is displayed, reset the lamp timer via the OSD menu.

the > Reset

Lamp Timer, and select Reset.

Timer and select Reset; if there are signals connected, go to Settings > Reset Lamp Timer, and select Reset.

Do not reset if the lamp is not new or replaced as this could cause damage.

A "Reset Successfully" message is displayed to notify that the lamp time has been reset to "0".

There are three indicators which show the status of the projector. Check the following information about the indicator lights. If there is anything wrong, turn the projector off and contact your dealer.

Troubleshooting

Problem

The projector does not turn on.

No picture.

Image is unstable.

Picture is blurred.

Remote control does not work correctly.

3D content does not display correctly

Cause

There is no power from the power cable.

Attempting to turn the projector on again during the cooling process.

The lamp cover is not securely attached.

The video source is not turned on or connected correctly.

The projector is not correctly connected to the input source device.

The input source has not been correctly selected.

The connection cables are not securely connected to the projector or the signal source.

The projection lens is not correctly focused.

Correctly attach the lamp cover.

Turn the video source on and check that the signal cable is connected correctly.

Check the connection.

Select the correct source with the SOURCE key on the projector or remote control.

Correctly connect the cables to the appropriate terminals.

The projector and the screen are not aligned properly.

Adjust the focus of the lens using the focus ring.

Adjust the projection angle and direction as well as the height of this projector if necessary.

Remove the lens cover.

Replace both of the batteries with new ones.

The lens cover is still closed.

The batteries are out of power.

There is an obstacle between the remote control and the projector.

You are too far away from the projector.

The 3D glasses are out of battery.

The settings in the 3D menu are not set correctly.

Your Blu-ray Disc is not in 3D format.

The input source has not been correctly selected.

Remedy

Plug the power cable into the AC inlet on the rear of the projector, and plug the power cable into to the power outlet. If the power outlet has a switch, make sure that it is switched on.

Wait until the cooling down process has completed.

Remove the obstacle.

Stand within 8 meters (26.2 feet) of the projector.

Recharge the 3D glasses.

Correctly set the settings in the 3D menu.

Use a 3D

Blu-ray Disc

and try again.

Select the correct source with the SOURCE key on the projector or remote control.
