Canon New EOS 80D Mid-Range DSLR Camera and
EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens

Canon today proudly announces the new EOS 80D next generation mid-range
DSLR camera, EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM and a range of new
compatible accessories, empowering photo enthusiasts and advanced
amateurs with all-rounded and convenient shooting capability to open up a
whole new realm of image creation. EOS 80D incorporates a host of
innovative features new to the mid-range EOS camera series, including new
24.2-megapixel APS-C sized CMOS sensor with built-in Dual Pixel CMOS AF
(DAF), new 45-point all cross-type AF system that supports a maximum of 27
AF points at f/8 lens combination, maximum 5 FPS continuous shooting speed
with SERVO AF function in Live View mode, 50p/59.94p Full HD EOS Movie
capability, Custom Movie Servo AF function powered by DAF, built-in
Wi-Fi that enables remote movie shooting and powered zoom function from
smart phones upon attachment of compatible accessory, and a first-in-theseries, new optical viewfinder with 100% coverage. With a host of innovative
features for both photo and video shooting that are comparable to those from
the advanced level EOS cameras, EOS 80D is perfect for photo amateurs
who demand responsive operation, advanced video functions and expanded
creativity expressions. Canon also releases the new EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6
IS USM standard zoom lens along with the launch of EOS 80D. In addition to
an improved Image Stabilizer that offers shake compensation up to 4-stop
shutter speed, the new lens is also equipped with new Nano USM to offer fast,
quiet and smooth AF for both photo and video shooting. When used with the
new Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1, it allows users to adjust zoom speed in 10
incremental levels for more accurate and natural movie zooming.
24.2-Megapixel Image Sensor and Image Processing System for
Improved Image Quality
EOS 80D features a newly developed 24.2-megapixel APS-C sized Canon
CMOS sensor that utilizes new finer manufacturing process and circuitry
design to bring higher image quality, while the functionality and quality for both
photos and movies are further boosted with the incorporation of high speed
DIGIC 6 Image Processor. This outstanding image processing system realizes
a standard ISO range of 100-16000 (expandable to ISO 25600 (H)) to
facilitate shooting in various situations. An in-camera "Distortion Correction" is
added to lens aberration correction to ensure excellent imaging.
In addition, EOS 80D adopts a 7,560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor with 63zone metering. By detecting Red (R), Green (G), Blue (B) and near-infrared
light (NIR) information, more consistent metering result can be achieved. The
RGB and NIR information from the metering sensor also enables the new
"EOS Scene Detection System" to achieve more accurate Auto Exposure,
Auto Lighting Optimizer and Auto White Balance results.
To facilitate easy creation of high quality creative images, EOS 80D offers a
range of useful features to choose from. These include a new “Fine Detail”
Picture Style that emphasizes fine edges and material textures, new
selectable Auto (Ambience Priority) and Auto (White Priority) settings under
Auto White Balance, 10 built-in Special Scene modes (such as Kids and
Handheld Night Scene) and 10 Creative Filters (such as water painting and
HDR effects).
New AF System and 7 FPS High Speed Shooting to Capture Fast Action
To ensure easy capture of different types of fast-moving subjects, EOS 80D
incorporates a newly developed 45-point1 all cross-type AF system with
expanded coverage and a f/2.8 compatible high precision dual-cross center
AF point that supports low-light conditions up to EV -32. The new AF system
also provides a maximum of 27 AF points1 that support autofocus with f/8 lens
combination, in which 9 of them1 are cross-type AF points. 4 AF Area
Selection modes including the new "Large Zone AF" are offered, and high
precision AF tracking is ensured with the adoption of AI Servo AF II algorithm
and various AF custom functions. Furthermore, an improved “Color Tone
Detection AF”3 which supports focusing to skin tone detected by the
7,560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor under One Shot AF as well as Color
Tracking AF during AI SERVO AF is featured. Thanks to these superior
features and designs, AF performance of the new camera is drastically
EOS 80D supports approximately 7 FPS high speed continuous shooting and
3 FPS silent continuous shooting with a shutter speed as fast as 1/8000s to
facilitate capture of fast-moving subjects. When shooting in Live View mode,
the camera supports continuous shooting with SERVO AF function at up to 5
FPS (by Dual Pixel CMOS AF), bringing enhanced operability when dealing
with dynamic subjects.
For better image quality, a new Mirror Vibration Control System (MVCS) is
featured to suppress effects on image quality due to mirror motion, while an
Anti-Flicker Shooting function ensures more consistent exposure and color
when shooting under flickering light source such as fluorescent light.
Enhanced EOS Movie Functionality for Expanded Creativity
Inherited from EOS 70D, the Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF (DAF) adopted by
EOS 80D is further advanced. By increasing the read-out speed and algorithm
advancement, smooth and precise Movie Servo AF is now available to all
movie recording formats and compatible with all autofocus EF lenses. The
camera also supports "Custom Movie Servo AF” that allows customization of
AF characteristics during movie shooting4 to create versatile results with ease.
In addition, EOS 80D supports 50p/59.94p Full HD EOS Movie and features a
built-in headphone jack for real-time monitoring of sound recording to ensure
all-rounded performance. A MP4 file format and IPB (light) movie compression
for MP4 format are added to make sharing of movies easier.
To fully unleash the power of movie creation, EOS 80D features an in-camera
Full HD HDR (High Dynamic Range) Movie5 shooting which can retain details
in highlight when shooting in high-contrast scenes. With Time Lapse Movie
function, a series of still images shot over a specific interval can be
automatically saved to a Full HD time lapse movie6. Users can also choose
from 5 Movie Creative Filters to add special effects to movies easily.
Built-in Wi-Fi/NFC Connectivity for Convenient Remote Shooting And
Instant Sharing
To facilitate easy shooting, photo management and sharing, EOS 80D
features a built-in IEEE 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi for connection to smart phone and
wireless EOS Utility etc. With “Camera Connect” application, remote Live View
shooting and movie shooting from smart phones are possible, while images or
MP4 videos can also be viewed and saved to smart phones. When used with
EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM with Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1 mounted,
users can control Power Zoom function during remote movie shooting using
“Camera Connect” app or EOS Utility.
A built-in NFC feature enables fast connection to smart phone and Connect
Station CS100. The NFC chip is embedded on the side of the camera so that
NFC connection is possible even when Battery Grip BG-E14 is attached.
Improved Camera Operability Inherited from Advanced Level EOS
EOS 80D shows great improvement in camera operability. An improved
“Intelligent Viewfinder” with on-demand Electronic Level, Gridline, Aspect
Ratio Line, Flicker Detection as well as display of AF Area Selection Mode is
equipped. It is also the first mid-range EOS model to feature an optical
viewfinder with 100% coverage and 0.95x magnification.
EOS 80D is designed to provide users with superior operability under all
conditions. Its 3.0-inch 1,040,000-dot Vari-angle 3:2 Clear View II LCD monitor
with touch screen function makes touch AF shooting, viewing and setting more
convenient and intuitive, and the same menu design as found in professional
EOS models improves menu operation speed. It is the first EOS model that
provides customizable Live View information display, keeping users well
informed of the information that matters. A built-in electronic level, which can
be shown on viewfinder or LCD monitor to cater for different shooting needs,
facilitates precise horizontal leveling to guarantee perfect composition for
architectural and landscape shooting. A built-in flash (GN 11) is useful in
providing fill lighting in different environments, and it also supports optical
pulse wireless master function to control compatible off-camera Speedlites for
creation of various lighting effects. The camera also offers in-camera "Interval
Timer" and "Bulb Timer".
EOS 80D is also built to perform under tough conditions, just like any other
EOS cameras. It features a shutter durability rating up to 100,000 cycles 7 for
strengthened and reliable performance, an improved Self-Cleaning Sensor
Unit with lower operation noise and is protected with improved dust and water
resistance design to give users ease of mind when shooting in outdoor
High Quality EF-S Standard Zoom Lens with New Nano USM
Offering a 7.5x high power zoom that covers from wide-angle to telephoto
range, EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is the first EF-S9 standard zoom lens
equipped with new Nano USM (Ultrasonic Motor) technology to bring an
approximately 4.3 times10 increase in AF speed when compared to its
predecessor and offer smooth and silent continuous AF11 for movie shooting.
The lens uses 1 UD lens element to minimize magnification-type chromatic
aberration and color blurring across the entire zoom range, and 1 PMo
aspherical lens element to correct various types of lens aberration. An Image
Stabilizer is incorporated to offer shake compensation up to 4-stop shutter
speed12 and support Dynamic IS function13 which is useful for steady movie
result. It is also built with dedicated mechanical structure and electric control
system that supports the use of “Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1” to achieve
natural and smooth powered zooming during movie shooting.
Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1
PZ-E1 is a detachable power zoom adapter. When attached on a compatible
lens, it turns an EOS DSLR camera into a professional video camcorder that
provides silent and smooth powered zoom function for movie shooting. Zoom
speed can be adjusted using the “Speed Level Switch” and “Zoom Lever”.
When PZ-E1 is used with EOS 80D, users can conduct wireless remote
powered zoom control via a smart phone or computer.
Directional Stereo Microphone DM-E1
Canon’s first directional stereo external microphone for EOS series to record
high quality sound. It is compatible to EOS cameras with movie shooting
function and external microphone input jack14. It features directional switching
function and supports monaural Shotgun mode and also Stereo with
90°/120°directivity. Wind Screen is also included which can effectively reduce
peripheral and wind noise
