Confirm your Settings.

VoIP is an acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol. It is how
telephone service is provided over the Internet. Cisco Jabber is
the application used at Tufts to make the connection possible.
Windows
i.
Click the cog in the upper right side of the application.
ii.
Select File > Options.
iii.
Click Accounts.
What is Cisco Jabber? Cisco Jabber is an application that acts as an all-in-one
communication tool. Users have the ability to make calls, or
communicate using video, and instant messaging (IM) using any
computer or mobile device that has the Cisco Jabber application
installed. You can make calls using a headset, physical phone,
or using your computers microphone and speakers.

Enter your Tufts Username and Password
Note: this step needs to be done any time you change your Tufts Password.
Before Conversion Take the following steps before you are converted to Cisco
Jabber:
1.
Download the Cisco Jabber Application onto your
computer. Note: If you do not have administrative rights to your
computer, contact it@tufts.edu for someone to assist.

Click Audio.

Set Speaker to Plantronics

Set Microphone to Plantronics

Set Ringer/Alerts to Speakers. (This ensures you will hear
incoming calls.)
Login to the Cisco Jabber application and enter your Tufts
credentials.
Note: The first time you log into the Jabber application, you
will receive a Cisco login screen. Enter your Tufts email
address. The application will then take you to the Tufts single
sign-on screen.

Exit the application. This completes the process of placing
you into the system. Note: Do not just sign out, as this will
not complete the process.

Go to Jabber > Preferences.
ii.
Select the Accounts Tab.
iii.
Click Phone Services.

Enter your Tufts Username and Password
Note: this step needs to be done any time you change your Tufts Password.

Log in to WebEx if you have not already done so on your
primary computer. (http://tufts.webex.com)

Get a headset from the Telecommunications group located in
the basement of TAB.
Update your White Pages page:

Select the Audio/Video Tab.

Go to http://whitepages.tufts.edu

Locate yourself.
c.
Ensure that your phone number is either your direct line or the
department main number.

Edit your page if the number is not up to date.
viii.
Set Ringer & Alerts to System Audio Output. (This
ensures you will hear incoming calls.)
During Conversion On the date of your conversion, you will notice that your
former telephone is blank. This means that you can now
connect to Cisco Jabber to begin using the telephone through
your computer.

Locate Jabber on your computer.

Log in using your Tufts credentials.

You will need to enter all 10 digits when calling any
number, even on campus.

You no longer need to dial 9 to get an outside line.

Frequently Asked Questions Q.
What are my options for receiving calls?
A.
You can receive calls using either a headset, a physical phone or
using your computers speakers. We recommend you use the headset
when you first convert to Jabber.
Q.
Why can’t I hear through my headset?
1.
If you are not logged into Jabber on your computer or
mobile device, your calls will automatically be routed to
voice mail.
A.
When you log into Jabber the first time, you will need to instruct it
to recognize your headset. See step 3 of the During Conversion
section above.
2.
Outlook: If you access your voice mail through your
Outlook email, this process stays exactly the same.
Dialing into VM using Jabber:

Why am I getting an error message from Jabber?
A.
You may need to log into WebEx to correct this issue.
Q.
Why did my call go straight to voice mail?
A.
If you have not logged into Jabber on any device, your calls will
automatically be routed to voice mail.
Q.
Why can’t I make a call to a 5-digit internal Tufts extension?
A.
The Jabber platform requires you make calls using all 10 digits.
You will no longer need to dial 9 when calling someone off campus.
Q.
I’m working from home and connected to Jabber. Why does
my Jabber say it is disconnected?
A.
If you use Jabber from home, it will only be as stable as your
Internet connection. If for any reason you Internet goes out, Jabber
will be disconnected.
Q.
I’m working from home and connected to Jabber but I
cannot make or receive phone calls.
A.
You must be connected to the VPN through AnyConnect to use
Jabber for phone calls.
Q.
How many devices can I use with Jabber?
A.
You can use up to 10 devices.
Q.
Can I install Jabber to make phone calls on my Tufts laptop
to use from home or on my home computer?
A.
Yes. In order to use Jabber from home, you must also install the
AnyConnect application to connect your computer to the VPN
before you can use Jabber at home.
Q.
Why can’t I use the Jabber app on my Windows mobile
phone?
A.
There is currently no Jabber app available for Windows mobile
phones. The app is available for Apple and Android based mobile
devices.
Q.
Can I go back to the old system?
A.
No, this is the system that eventually will be used by the entire Tufts
community.

You will receive an email from TelData@tufts.edu that
provides Setup Instructions and a new starter Pin. The first time
you dial in the system will walk you through changing the Pin.

Dial 617-627-5300.

Dialing into VM from Off Campus
a.
Dial your telephone number.

Press the * Key while listening to your VM.

Enter your PIN at the prompt.
Mobile Device App If you prefer, you can also access your work line through your
personal mobile device. Jabber has an app for Apple and
Android devices. Before you log into the Cisco Jabber app: on
campus - connect to the tufts_secure wireless; off campus – you
must connect to the VPN through the AnyConnect App to use
the Jabber app for phone calls.

From the App Store or Google Play, locate the Cisco Jabber
App. This app will use a blue icon. (Note: Do not
download the app with the green icon called Cisco Jabber
Voice.)
Download the Jabber App.
Enter your Tufts credentials and tap Log In.
Note: If you find you cannot log in, it may be that the
conversion process has not been completed. Wait till the end of
the day of your conversion and try to log in again before
reporting an issue.
