Canon’s New 10.1-Megapixel EOS 1000D DSLR
Pushing the Envelope of High Performance
and in Affordable Price
Canon today announced the introduction of the EOS 1000D, a new entry-level digital
camera that affordably puts Canon SLR technology such as an Optical Image Stabilizer
and easy-to-use professional features into the hands of emerging photographers.
Consumers looking to take their photography a step further and begin shooting with an
SLR will find the transition easier than ever with Canon's new EOS 1000D digital SLR
camera. From the parents photographing their new born baby, to the tourist shooting a
wondrous new city, the EOS 1000D makes photography easy for everyone.
Ideal for a wide range of photographers from first-time digital SLR users to veteran photo
enthusiasts, the new EOS 1000D was designed to embody what customers have come to
expect from the EOS entry-level digital SLR camera – a fast, non-intimidating, lightweight,
easy-to-use camera that produces excellent images and starts emerging photographers
off on the right foot. Immediately, photographers will take notice of the camera's Image
Stabilized kit lens for crisp focus, compensating for camera shake from unsteady hands.
The new EOS 1000D also incorporates Canon’s 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor, DIGIC III
image processor, Live View mode, Auto Lighting Optimizer, 7-point wide-area autofocus
(AF) sensor and 3.0 frames per second continuous JPEG burst rate where the number of
consecutive shots in a burst is only limited by the capacity of the memory card in the
Canon 10.1-Megapixel CMOS Sensor & DIGIC III Image Processor for High
Performance Photography
Despite its lower price tag, the EOS 1000D offers superb image quality, on the strength of
very sound fundamentals. Designed and manufactured by Canon, EOS 1000D’s large
(APS-C size) 10.1-Megapixel CMOS sensor captures sharp, low-noise images with fine
details, offers sufficient resolution to produce A3 or larger prints.
The EOS 1000D also features a DIGIC III image processor, as used in Canon’s
professional DSLR models. This allows continuous shooting of JPEG images until the SD
or SDHC memory card is full, at speed of up to 3fps – with the number of shots limited
only by the size of the card. DIGIC III also delivers superior image rendering, excellent
noise reduction, rapid operation and virtually instant start-up times.
Live View Mode Optimizes Shooting from Awkward Angles
Rarely found in entry class digital SLR cameras, EOS 1000D’s Live View mode makes it
easier to shoot from awkward angles, such as ground-level macro shots or when
shooting from a tripod. The image from the Live View mode is displayed as a smooth,
30fps video feed on the 2.5-inch LCD screen. A grid line display and live histogram can
be selected to help with shot composition and exposure. While focusing, the
photographer can zoom in on specific details with up to 10x magnification of the image
displayed on the LCD screen. Two types of auto focus are available: Quick AF flips the
camera mirror momentarily to engage the AF sensor; Live AF uses the image contrast
data to focus automatically during Live View mode without lowering the reflex mirror - a
method familiar to anyone upgrading from a compact digital camera.
For studio environments, remote Live View mode lets the photographer compose, focus,
adjust settings and capture the shot from a PC using the supplied EOS Utility software.
Auto Lighting Optimizer for Enhanced Image Quality
EOS 1000D’s Auto Lighting Optimizer analyzes the images’ brightness and contrast
automatically and makes adjustments to achieve optimal setting for bright and beautiful
images. As found in the EOS 450D, this valuable feature works in all exposure modes
(except M Mode) and utilizes Face Detection technology to correct underexposure with
backlit faces.
Fast and Accurate renowned Canon AF System
For shots where fast focusing is needed, the EOS 1000D features a 7-point wide area
Auto Focus system, capable of locking onto a subject in a fraction of a second. A f/5.6
cross-type central focus point continues to operate effectively even when used in lowerlight and lower-contrast setting. This cross-type focus point works with all EF and EF-S
Lenses ranging from 10mm to 800mm, achieving great flexibility.
EOS Integrated Cleaning System
The EOS Integrated Cleaning System found in the EOS 1000D combats sensor dust in
two important ways: Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit and Dust Delete Data. The Self-Cleaning
Sensor Unit uses hi-frequency vibrations to shake dust from the anti-static coated
lowpass filter for a period of approximately one second after each start up and shut down.
For instant shooting after power up, this feature is disabled immediately when the shutter
release is pressed.
Canon has also developed an internal Dust Delete Data system, which can map the
position of visible dust on the sensor. This can then be deleted automatically from the
images with the supplied Digital Photo Professional software.
Ease of Operation for more Enjoyable Experience
Like the rest of the Canon range, the EOS 1000D is designed with attention to
ergonomics and ease of use. With the lightest body of any EOS digital SLR camera, EOS
1000D is shaped to fit the user’s hands for comfortable and natural operation, with
dedicated buttons for quick access to the most important functions. These include ISO
speed, Picture Style, metering mode, drive mode, AF mode and WB mode. The other
numerous functions and settings are accessible via an intuitive menu system, which can
also be customised to the user’s preference.
In addition, the bright viewfinder makes image composition clearer and more comfortable
in operation, with displays of all key exposure information including ISO speed. The EOS
1000D utilizes the same LP-E5 lithium ion battery pack as EOS 450D, which provides
proven excellent battery life. It is also compatible with Battery Grip BG-E5 that facilitates
vertical shooting.
Full Software in a Package
The EOS 1000D comes with a comprehensive software suite that provides everything the
photographer needs to manage and process images. This includes Digital Photo
Professional (DPP), a powerful RAW converter that provides complete RAW image
processing control. DPP also integrates with camera features such as Dust Delete Data
and Picture Styles. The supplied Picture Style Editor software can be used to create
custom Picture Styles for fine control over colour display. The camera also comes with
EOS Utility, Image Browser/Zoom Browser and PhotoStitch.
Comprehensive 2-year Warranty Against Accidents
The basic warranty offered by Canon for the EOS 1000D has been extended form one
year to two years, and also includes protection against accidents including impact, fire
and flooding, as specified in the 2-year Supreme Protection Plan*. Within the first year,
loss of the camera due to burglary and robbery also entitles the owner to buy a new EOS
1000D at special discounted price.

Brand New: the 430EX II Speedlite
In all instances where lighting conditions are poor, the EOS 1000D’s build-in auto pop-up
flash offers sufficient spread of coverage for up to 17mm focal length. Nevertheless, for
much enhanced range and lighting flexibility, the EOS 1000D can be fitted with a broad
selection of Canon Speedlite flash units.
Of these, the latest addition to the Speedlite family is the Speedlite 430EX II, a light and
compact autoflash with high output power. It has a maximum guide number of 43 (meter;
ISO 100; 105mm) and a retractable wide-panel to create illumination as broad as a 14mm
lens would need. The 430EX II excels not only by its accurate E-TTL II autoflash and
wireless slave E-TTL II autoflash, but also by the way it integrates with the camera. Once
it is mounted, the user can have every flash functions altered and set by simply operating
through the menu of compatible EOS digital SLR camera, without touching the flashgun
at all. Also, the 430EX II has control precision up to 1/3-stop in manual output adjustment.
Thanks to a new computer-controlled oscillator circuit, recycling time of the 430EX II has
been reduced by 20% as compared to previous models, and the recycling process is
inaudible to the human ears to minimize distraction.
Further enhancing ease of use is the new quick attachment and locking lever which
makes it much easier to attach and detach the 430EX II than with the conventional screw
collar mechanism.
General improvements have also been made to enhance the flashgun's reliability. Instead
of the molded plastic used as in earlier models, the 430EX II features a metal mounting
foot. Its electronic contact has also been optimized to reduce frictional dust produced
whenever a flashgun is attached to and detached from a camera, hence improving the
reliability of the interface.
With all these improvements incorporated, the Speedlite 430EX II is the ideal choice for
both amateurs and professionals seeking enhanced lighting flexibility.
Canon’s new EOS 1000D digital SLR camera and 430EX II Speedlite will be available for
sales in Hong Kong in late July 2008.
