Sound System User's Guide
1. Unlock the cabinet and TURN ON THE POWER BAR using the power switch on the bottom left side.
2. TAKE THE REMOTE CONTROL and PRESS
"POWER" ( n ). The screen will say "TASCAM"
then "CD-RW4U" then "AUDIO MODE".
3. Take a BLANK 80-minute CD-R
from the stack. Hold it by the edges please.
4. USE "OPEN / CLOSE" ( o ), put the BLANK
CD ONTO THE TRAY. Display will say
"TOC Reading" then "CD-R NO TOC".
5. PRESS "RECORD" (
). On the screen,
record/pause will light up and the screen
will say, "Now OPC".
6. AT THE START OF THE SERVICE, PRESS "PLAY" (
) TO BEGIN RECORDING.
Do not start recording any earlier (e.g. during the pre-service singing) because we only have 1 hour 20 minutes of
recording time (10:00-11:20am) to ensure that we get the entire sermon and if possible the closing benediction.
7. DURING THE SERVICE, PRESS "RECORD" (
) TO MARK NEW TRACKS.
A typical service should have about 10-15 tracks (min. 4 seconds per track, max. 99 tracks). The only track that is
important is the one containing the sermon (to make it easier to post on our web site later). Don't worry about
whether you marked a track while someone was speaking or what seems like a long silence between hymns.
8. If you’re curious, press "DISPLAY" ( s ) to see timer "TOTAL REMAIN" (remaining)
9. WHEN THE WORSHIP LEADER CALLS FOR "SHARING/PRAYER", PRESS
"PAUSE" (
). Look at the pause indicator and timer on the screen. Say out loud,
"The recording is paused". We don't want to record any personal/prayer concerns.
PRESS "PLAY" (
) TO RESUME RECORDING (e.g. for benediction)
10. a) IF THE SERVICE ENDS BEFORE THE DISC RUNS OUT, PRESS "STOP" (
b) IF DISC RUNS OUT BEFORE THE SERVICE ENDS, the screen will show:
• "FADE OUT" (for a few seconds), then "Disc Full!!", then "PMA Writing"
)
11. PRESS "FINALIZE" (
) screen will say, "Finalize OK?" PRESS "ENTER" ( u ).
Wait 1 minute for the finalizing to finish; the screen will say "CD" ready.
It is very important that you do this step, otherwise the disc will not play in regular CD players!
12. EJECT THE CD USING "OPEN / CLOSE" ( o ), AND USE THE MARKER TO FILL IN THE
BLANKS ON THE CD (Date, Speaker, Topic, Orginal). Only use the marker that is in the cabinet (it’s CDsafe). Take another blank CD-R and label it the same way except Copy (instead of Original).
13. TURN OFF THE POWER BAR AND LOCK THE CABINET USING THE PADLOCK
Check the center microphone's light again to confirm that the red light is off.
14. TAKE THE DISC HOME and burn a duplicate Audio CD (either disc copy or from 192kbps or better rip)
• Use FTP to upload the sermon track only to ftp://ftp.pgimf.org/audio (see Webmaster for password)
15. BRING THE DISCS TO CHURCH NEXT SUNDAY; put copy in the binder below the cabinet and fill in the
index card for that Sunday. Put the original CD in a jewel case in the Webmaster’s mail slot.

Sound System Configuration Guide
The PGIMF sound system has been configured at the
time of installation to function without adjustment of
any kind. It can pick up quiet speaking by a single
individual anywhere in the room, as well as the loudest
singing of the full congregation without overmodulating. Please do not adjust any knobs, settings
or cable connections unless the system has been
tampered with. The components connect as follows:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Left audience microphone goes into MIC/LINE1
on the Mixer (XLR-jack)
Right audience microphone goes into MIC/LINE2
on the Mixer (XLR-jack)
Center above-podium microphone goes into
MIC/LINE3/L on the Mixer (XLR-jack)
MIX OUT Left (1/4"-jack) from the Mixer goes to BALANCED INPUT (1/4"-jack) of Compressor Channel 1
MIX OUT Right (1/4"-jack) from the Mixer goes to BALANCED INPUT (1/4"-jack) of Compressor Channel 2
BALANCED OUTPUT (1/4"-jack) from Ch. 1 goes to ANALOG INPUT Left (RCA-jack) on the CD Recorder
BALANCED OUTPUT (1/4"-jack) from Ch. 2 goes to ANALOG INPUT Right (RCA-jack) on the CD Recorder
"S·com 4" 4 Channel Compressor Gate configuration for Ch.1 and Ch.2:
TRIGGER: OFF GATE: OFF RELEASE: OFF
THRESHOLD: -40 db RATIO: 2.5:1 METER: ON
ENHANCER: OFF OUTPUT: 0 db
STEREO LINK: OFF IN/OUT 1: ON IN/OUT 2: ON
This causes negligible amounts of gain compression
during normal speaking volume, and heavy
compression during loud group singing. Higher ratios
with the enhancer sound too artificial, and higher
thresholds don't prevent the CD Recorder from peaking.
"MDR 6" 6 Channel Mixer configuration:
All of the levels and sliders should be set at zero (0) except the
"GAIN / CLIP" for MIC/LINE1 and MIC/LINE2 which are set at
about the "10 o'clock" position (e.g. 20 out of 60). The mics need
48V "PHANTOM" power (switch at the back must be turned on).
The audience mics are intentionally not panned left/right at all.
"CD-RW4U" CD Recorder configuration:
The analog "INPUT" level (
) must always be turned to its
maximum position (all the way to the right). You can monitor the
level during recording to see that it stays within a normal range.

Additional Notes
For each recording made, log the following on index cards (green box):
Recording Date
Recorded By
(Sound Helper's
Name)
Borrowed By
Taken Out Date

The TASCAM CD-RW4U Owner's Manual is online at http://www.tascam.com/products/CDRW4U/pdf/ReCDRW4UAudioEn.pdf (also at http://tascamcontractor.com/ftp_resources/files/manual/CDRW4U_manual.pdf if that one is unavailable).
NOTE: In order to make a perfect Audio-CD copy, your CD burner must support overburning, you must use a disc
copy program which is capable of overburning and use DAO (Disc-At-Once) mode, and you must use 80 minute
(700MB) blank CD-R media.
Below is an example of how to use a command-line FTP program to upload the sermon track only to the “audio”
directory of the church web site in case the Webmaster is out of town (use a shell – either cmd in Windows or any
shell in Linux/Mac):
C:\>cd "C:\Documents and Settings\kevin\My Documents\My Webs\pgimf-web\audio"
