Note: The numbers in brackets below refer to specific buttons and switches in the illustrations
above.
ENERGIZE THE DR-40
1. Insert (3) AA batteries
2. Press and hold HOME [7] until the screen illuminates.
3. To de-energize the DR-40, Press and hold HOME [7] until the screen goes blank.
Note: Use the following buttons to navigate the MENUS
• Use + [8] or – [12] buttons to move up and down
• Use the REWIND [10] or FAST FORWARD [19] buttons to move left & right
• Use the ENTER/MARK [20] button to confirm a setting or enter a sub-menu
• Use the MENU [9] button to step back one sub-menu at a time
• Use the HOME [7] button to exit the menu screen
SET THE DATE AND TIME
Note: Do this before every recording.
1. Press the MENU [9] button to access the MENU screen.
2. Use the + [8] or – [12] button to select the OTHERS menu item, and press the ENTER/
MARK [20].
3. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select the DATE/TIME menu item, and press the ENTER/
MARK [20].
4. Press the REWIND [10] or FAST FORWARD [19] buttons to move the highlighted area, and
use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to change values.
5. Press the ENTER/MARK [20] button to confirm the changes and return to the OTHERS
screen.
6. Press the HOME [7] button to exit the menu screen.
FORMAT THE SD CARD
Note: Formatting ERASES all data on the SD card
1. Press the MENU [9] button to access the MENU screen.
2. Use the + [8] or – [12] button to select the OTHERS menu item (highlighted), and press the
ENTER/MARK [20].
3. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select the SYSTEM menu item (highlighted), and press the
ENTER/MARK [20].
4. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select the FULL FORMAT menu item (highlighted), and
press the ENTER/MARK [20] button to highlight EXEC.
5. Press the ENTER/MARK [20] button to open a pop-up confirmation window.
6. Press the ENTER/MARK [20] button to execute the full formatting, or press the HOME [7]
button to cancel formatting.
7. Press HOME [7] to exit the menu screen.

SELECTING FILE FORMAT AND SAMPLING FREQUENCY
1. Press the MENU [9] button to access the MENU screen.
2. Use the + [8] or – [12] button to select the REC SETTINGS menu item (highlighted), and
press the ENTER/MARK [20]. The REC SETTINGS screen appears.
3. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select FORMAT and press the ENTER/MARK [20].
4. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select WAV 16bit.
5. Press the REWIND [10] button to show settings.
6. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select SAMPLE and press the ENTER/MARK [20].
7. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select WAV 48K.
8. Press HOME [7] to exit the menu screen.
ENABLING DUAL RECORDING
1. Press the REC MODE [15] button to open the REC MODE screen.
2. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select REC MODE and press the ENTER/MARK [20].
3. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select DUAL. The DUAL light [2] should illuminate. Press
the REWIND [10] button to make another selection.
4. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select SOURCE and press the ENTER/MARK [20].
5. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select EXT IN 1. Press the REWIND [10] button
6. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select DUAL LVL and press the ENTER/MARK [20].
7. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select -6dB. Press the REWIND [10] button
8. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select LVL CTRL and press the ENTER/MARK [20].
9. Use the + [8] or – [12] buttons to select OFF
10. Press HOME [7] to exit the REC MODE screen.
CONNECTING AN EXTERNAL CONDENSER MICROPHONE
1. Set the EXT IN SWITCH [25] to MIC+PHANTOM.
2. A screen confirming that PHANTOM POWER is on will appear.
3. Press the ENTER/MARK [20] to confirm.
4. Connect an XLR CABLE to the L EXT/MIC LINE IN XLR JACK [22]
5. Connect the microphone to the XLR cable.
CONNECTING THE HEADPHONES
1. Place the headphones behind your ears.
2. Press the – [12] button to reduce the volume.
3. Plug in a pair of headphones to the HEADPHONE/LINE OUT JACK [24].
4. Adjust the volume with the + [8] or – [12] buttons.

SETTING RECORDING LEVELS AND MAKING A RECORDING
1. Press the RECORD [16] button once. The RECORD [16] light blinks.
2. Have the talent speak at the volume level they are going
to use to perform.
3. Press the INPUT LEVEL [27] buttons to set an average
peak for the top bar at the arrow.
4. Place your headphones on your ears and press the +
[8] or – [12] buttons to slowly adjust the headphone
volume.
5. Press the RECORD [16] button again to start recording.
6. Press the RECORD [16] button again to stop recording.
7. Place the headphones behind your ears.
PLAYBACK A RECORDING
1. While in the HOME SCREEN, press the PLAY [17] button.
2. Press the REWIND [10] or FAST FORWARD [19] buttons to play the next file.
3. Press and hold the REWIND [10] or FAST FORWARD [19] buttons to advance or regress 3
seconds.
4. Press the + [8] or – [12] buttons to adjust the volume.
5. Press the HOME [7] button to stop.
RESTORE FACTORY SETTINGS
Note: Do this if the DR-40 isn’t working right
1. Press MENU [9] to access the MENU screen.
2. Use the + [8] or – [12] button to select the OTHERS menu item (highlighted), and press the
ENTER/MARK [20].
3. Use the + [8] or – [12] button to select the SYSTEM menu item and press the ENTER/MARK
[20].
4. Use the + [8] or – [12] button to select the INITIALIZE menu item
5. Press the ENTER/MARK [20] to select EXEC. Press the ENTER/MARK [20] again.
6. Press the ENTER/MARK button [20] to INITIALIZE, or press the HOME [7] button to cancel.
