Information Technology Why Standardized Configurations? Why

Information Technology Why Standardized Configurations? Why
Information Technology
Information Technology is an integral component of the learning environment at Trafalgar Castle School. This integration
is guided by three main objectives: to have students develop a high level of competency with information technology, to
have students develop 21st century learning skills through the use of technology and to use information technology to
support and enhance the delivery of curriculum.
Grade 5
Students entering Grade 5 have paid a technology fee as part of their tuition. Included in that fee, the school provides
each student with a computer that will typically stay at the school at the end of each day. At appropriate times, students
may take the computers home, but it is not the general rule. The implementation of the computer is at the discretion of the
Grade 5 teachers, with the overall goal that the technology will be integrated in a manner that best suits the overall
learning needs of the students.
Grade 6
Grade 6 students are required to have one of three computer options identified in this document. In Grade 6, the
computers are the property of the student. The implementation of the computer is at the discretion of the Grade 6
teachers, with the overall goal that the technology will be integrated in a manner that best suits the overall learning needs
of the students.
Grade 7 - 12
New students joining Trafalgar Castle School in Grades 7 through 12 are required to have one of three computer options
identified in this document.
Why Standardized Configurations?
•
Having the same configuration/image and curriculum software on all machines enables teachers to assist
students more effectively in learning. Each recommended computer arrives with essential software pre-installed,
including Microsoft Windows and Office, network configuration and specialized curriculum software licensed to the
school.
•
Adopting a standardized approach also allows us to offer a high level of technical support and service to students
and parents. Having standardized computers allows our I.T. Department to diagnose any hardware and software
problems efficiently. These computers can be reconfigured with a standard “image” in approximately 30 minutes.
•
Warranty arrangements with the same re-seller enable the school to provide effective hardware service to all
machines. The school makes no profit through the sale of any computer whether purchased or leased.
Why Three Choices?
The school recognizes that the pace at which technology changes is ever increasing and recognizes that there exists
more than one correct choice for a computer. In order to increase the school’s agility to evolve with emerging
technologies, three options have been identified as the best choices for students at Trafalgar Castle School.
•
•
MacBook
o Offers the student the ease of a Mac computer while maintaining the compatibility of the Windows
environment.
ThinkPad Edge
o Offers the student an inexpensive, competent computer that can carry out the necessary functions within
the learning environment at Trafalgar Castle School. The ThinkPad Edge does this without enhanced
capability or cost and should the student in later years wish to change model, the incurred cost of moving
away from a ThinkPad Edge will be small.
•
ThinkPad Tablet
o Offers the student the capabilities of a tablet alongside the Windows environment. Information about the
Lenovo tablet can be found here: http://shop.lenovo.com/ca/en/products/laptops/thinkpad/xtabletseries/index.html
Technical Support and Service
Trafalgar Castle School has a full-time Help Desk Analyst on-site who provides support for participants in the school’s
Information Technology program. The majority of technical issues can be resolved in-house. Where it is necessary to
send machines out for service, we endeavour to achieve a four business day turn-around. Trafalgar Castle School has a
loaner pool for use by students if their machines are sent out for service. These services are only available for authorized
Information Technology devices.
