Introduction
Newly architected Capture One 4 allows photographers to enhance and develop RAW digital files with
excellent color and detail reproduction. Providing best possible image quality is a cornerstone in
Capture One. Tools for this and excellent “out-of-the-box” results are part of the new Capture One 4.
Capture One 4 is designed with an easy workflo w in mind, and the simplified new user interface
leaves more of the screen area to your images.
Highlighted ne w features
This new release of Capture One comes in three versions: 4.8.3, 4.8.3 PRO and 4.8.3 DB.
Capture One 4.8.3 is a free service release to existing Capture One 4.x o wners.
Existing customers with Capture One 3.x can upgrade to a similar version of Capture One 4.8.3 at no
extra cost.
Capture One 4.8.3 includes:

o Mac: Improved compatibility with Snow Leopard.
o Mac: Fixed issue causing out of memory in certain circumstances.

o Improved P65+ and P40+ image quality for some shooting conditions.

Capture One 4.8.3 may run on other and older equipment than what’s listed below but to ensure the
best possible results we recommend that your computer at least conforms to the following

Please note that you need an internet connection when activating Capture One 4.8.3
(For Phase One digital back users, the application can be run in the “Capture One digital back only”
mode. The application is fully functional in this mode and doesn’t require activation or an internet
connection)
The above hard ware specifications is to be considered as minimum requirements, if you work with
high resolution camera systems or simply want to optimize the performance, please follow the
recommendations below:
• Using processor with multiple cores, e.g. Intel CoreTM Duo or better
• Having 2 GB of RAM or more
• Plenty of hard disk space for your images!
• A fast hard disk

For tethered shooting with Phase One digital backs ensure that your system complies with the
following recommendations:
o Sufficient Fire wire po wer supply, i.e. 10W is required, which is more than what many
laptops are able to supply.
o Activate “Force Battery” setting in Digital Back when using host computer with
insufficient Firewire po wer supply.
o Use the 4.5 m Phase One Firewire cable

Installation
Capture One 4.8.3 is compatible with previous 4.x versions.
If you upgrade from 4.5.X, 4.6.X or 4.7.X versions, the settings are unchanged, and will be reused.
Version 4.0 and 4.1.X settings will be upgraded automatically. Version 3.X settings are not supported.
If you want to keep your existing versions of Capture One 4 you can install this newer version of
Capture One 4 in a different location.
Install on Windows:
Capture One includes an easy-to-use installer that will install all the soft ware you need to run the
application on a Windows based computer.
To install the soft ware, please follow the procedure below:
1. Load the Capture One DVD, or do wnload the application from the Phase One website:

2. Run the executable soft ware install file.
3. Read and accept the license agreement when presented.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Install on Mac OS X:
Capture One includes an easy-to-use installer that will install all the soft ware necessary to run the
application on Mac OS X.
To install the soft ware, please follow the procedure below:
1. Load the Capture One DVD, or do wnload the application from the Phase One website:

2. Open the Capture One disk image.
3. Read and accept the license agreement when presented.
4. Drag the Capture One icon to the Applications folder.
5. Start the Capture One application from your Applications folder.

Known issues
Below you will find a list of known issues for Capture One 4.8.3 at the time of shipping.
General:
- (PRO) Setting the white balance on a connected camera from the Camera tool is supported for
Phase One Digital Backs. It is not available for Canon DSLR cameras.
- The User Guide describes features that might only exist on the Mac platform currently.
- (PRO/DB) Sessions are not cross platform compatible.
- (PRO) For EOS-1D Mark II, EOS-1Ds Mark II, EOS-1D Mark II N: These cameras only support
remote capture via the FireWire port. Clear any messages on the LCD panel of the camera
before connecting the camera, other wise capturing will be disabled.
- (PRO) For EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 5D, EOS 20D, EOS 350D/Rebel XT: Set the camera’s
communication setting to PC connection or Normal to enable remote capture. Do not use the
Print/PTP or PTP setting.
- Bro wsing folders containing unsupported image files may affect application performance
- The new feature of transferring rating from a digital back to Capture One is currently only
available for P 65+ and P 40+
- LCC libraries/files generated prior to Capture One 4.5.x are not supported. However it is
possible to create new LCC files from the original LCC images.
- It is not possible to export a DNG from a Leica D-Lux 4 camera.
- Image previe ws created with a version prior to Capture 4.7 will updated with Capture One
4.8.3. The first time you access folders with existing Capture One previe ws the application
performance can be slow.
Mac:

(PRO/DB) When you have disconnected a camera do not reconnect a camera until the Camera
tool status changes to "No Camera Attached".
(PRO/DB) Do not open the shutter on the camera prior to opening the Live Preview windo w.
Doing so will generate errors on the digital back after closing the Live Preview windo w. The
recommended procedure for using Live Preview is to first open the Live Preview windo w, then
open the shutter on the camera, use Live Preview as desired, when done close the shutter on
the camera, and close the Live Preview windo w.
It is only possible to sho w the Capture One toolbar in “Icon Only” mode.
Windows:
- (PRO/DB) Library tool cannot be closed or moved from the default tab.
- (PRO) Windows drivers are required for some older models of Canon DSLR cameras to be able
to shoot tethered. These drivers are available from Canon’s web site.
- (PRO) Connecting some Canon cameras to the computer after launching Capture One might
result in tethered capture being unavailable. If you experience this, connect the camera to the
computer prior to launching Capture One.
- (PRO/DB) Live Preview is not supported.
- (PRO/DB) It is not possible to save workspaces.
