How easy is it to determine device, job, and print cartridge status?
6
Ease of use
Performance
Increase productivity and
streamline workflows.
Fast professional printing
With fast print speeds of up to 35 ppm, letter (33 ppm, A4), users can print and get back to work quickly,
improving workteam productivity.
When printers have been sitting idle between print jobs, the first-page-out print speed becomes more important
than pages per minute. Instant-on Technology uses cutting-edge fuser technology that enables print jobs to begin
quickly from low power mode. The Time To Completion (TTC) of a typical office print job can be nearly twice as
fast from low power mode on this device with Instant-on Technology than on devices without it. This means less
waiting for prints and more time spent engaged in business. Instant-on Technology also uses up to 50 percent
less energy than traditional fusing.2
Powerful print job processing
Quickly and accurately process complex print jobs with the printer’s 600 MHz processor and 64 MB memory
on the P2055d model (expandable up to 320 MB) and 128 MB memory on the P2055dn and P2055x models
(expandable up to 384 MB).
Automatic language switching ensures that the appropriate printer language is used for each print job. The
printer includes HP PCL 6 for optimum performance, HP PCL 5c for backward compatibility, and HP postscript
level 3 emulation for PostScript® print jobs. Create professional documents that represent your unique business
image with a broad range of font options.
Specially formulated HP toner
The toner particles in HP print cartridges contain a wax core designed to fuse to the paper at full printer speeds,
delivering fast printing without sacrificing output quality.
HP Universal Print Driver
Use a single driver for instant access to HP devices—at home, in the office, or on the road. The HP Universal
Print Driver is not a one-size-fits-all print solution. The sophisticated yet simple print driver communicates directly
with each HP device, gathers configuration information, then customizes the user interface to show the device’s
unique, available features.
While some multi-device print drivers only enable the most basic functions on the devices they support, the
HP Universal Print Driver enables all available features, no matter how advanced—from two sided printing to
stapling to sorting—on all of the devices it supports. Users are never held up or held back. While printer
capabilities may vary for each device, the HP Universal Print Driver provides the same look and feel across all
devices. Users enjoy a familiar experience, making it easier for them to move between devices. To download
the free HP Universal Print Driver Series for Windows®, visit www.hp.com/go/upd.
Performance
7
Evaluating performance
Printer performance is more than just a measure of pages per minute. Rather, printer performance is the
speed at which a printer can turn electronic files into printed pages. In addition to engine speed, several
factors affect the time it takes to print a job, including the use of specialty paper, computer download time,
and printer processing time. The time it takes for your computer to download a job to the printer, and for the
printer to process the job, depends on the following variables:
•
The complexity and size of graphics
•
The speed of your computer
•
The network operating system and configuration
•
Printer personality or language (such as PCL or postscript emulation)
Creating samples
First, you will develop a group of sample documents that represent what a typical user would print. This is the
best method for determining if a printer is suited to your needs. Then you will evaluate the performance of the
device.
It is important to test files like those that will be typically printed. Your samples should include multiple
documents and file types, sent from applications commonly used in your environment. The samples should
have different elements (text, graphics, and images) and should vary in complexity and page length. Some
suggested content includes:
Simple text documents
May include e-mail messages, memos, or a spreadsheet report, printed on plain office paper
Mixed text and graphics
May include newsletters, PowerPoint presentations printed on transparencies, or marketing
materials printed on glossy paper
Images
May include photographic images and advanced graphics (using overlays or fill patterns), printed
on photo paper
Simple text
documents
Mixed text
and graphics
Images
Evaluation guidelines
Before you print the sample documents, make sure that your test environment simulates the end user’s and
that you make a fair comparison between printers. Follow the guidelines below:
Evaluate a printer from the end user’s perspective.
•
Print from computers that closely match the typical end user’s.
•
Test multiple paper sizes and types.
•
Test print features (automatic two-sided printing, document formatting, etc.).
•
Test and compare default settings. (What settings will the end user use most often?)
8
Performance
When evaluating more than one printer, it is crucial that you make a fair comparison between printers.
•
Print the same files on all printers, in the same operating environment (constant temperature and
humidity), using the same computer, operating system, software application, print settings or modes, and
paper type to test all printers. Be sure to test comparable print drivers. Each of these components interacts
with the printing process and can affect print speed and quality.
•
Test more than one software application to make sure software/driver conflicts are not affecting print
quality.
•
If printers are networked, use the same client and an isolated or controlled network to provide a
repeatable environment. You can use a sniffer on your network to record the amount of network traffic
being generated and make sure it is consistent when testing each printer.
What to measure
Different testing methods can be employed to gauge the performance of the HP LaserJet P2050 Printer series.
The following tests are commonly used:
Click-to-drop
The total print time, from the time the print command is issued, to completion of printing.
Return-to-application
The time from initiating the print command, to the time when the computer is available for other
tasks.
Pick-to-drop
The print time, from the instant the first piece of paper is picked up by the device, to completion of
printing.
Device warm-up + calibration
The time from turning the device on to the time when the device enters the Ready state. (This time
usually includes warming-up the device, calibration, and booting up the device firmware.)
Warm-up time
The time it takes the device to warm up and print a simple document, after the device has been
idle for one hour.
First page out
The time from initiating the print command to the completion of the first page. Measure this from a
variety of engine conditions, such as Ready or low power mode.
Running the tests
Follow the guidelines below when measuring device performance:
•
Be sure to measure the amount of time it takes to print a complete document. (For example, you might
print a 20-page duplexed document, with a cover page printed on heavier paper.)
•
Perform each test three times to obtain an average. If the variances in the three tests are too much,
discard the results, check the system, and redo the tests.
•
If the printer offers more than one I/O port, perform tests using each port.
•
When comparing the performance of printers, look beyond the speed trial data and consider the
acceptability of the output. There are definitely tradeoffs in print quality, but as you review your results,
look at the samples and consider whether the quality meets your standards. For output quality evaluation
guidelines, see page 16.

•
Enjoy a comfortable printing experience. The familiar HP interface is preferred by most office users and
requires very little training.
Worry-free operation
The product comes standard with a one-year, return to HP or an HP authorized service center warranty. In
addition, a wide array of service and support options are available, including maintenance support and
extended on-site warranties, which vary by region. For more information, see “Appendix A—HP Support
Services” on page 21.
By far the biggest contributor to user productivity is the reliability of HP equipment, support, and service. Instead
of experiencing frustration and downtime while waiting for repair, users are getting their work done.
Total cost of ownership
13
Evaluating total cost of ownership
A printer’s value consists of more than just purchase price and the cost of supplies. Consider the following
factors:
•
Initial purchase price, including enough memory to print complex documents in the highest print quality
mode, plus any accessories needed in the office or workgroup environment (such as a print server,
wireless options, an automatic two-sided printing unit, or additional paper trays).
Note To ensure accurate comparisons between products, be sure to compare street prices (or what you
would actually pay) instead of list prices.
•
Warranty and service costs. (What is the standard warranty? Are upgraded service plans available?)
•
Expandability. (Does the printer support additional features?)
•
Opportunity costs of outsourcing vs. in-house printing.
•
User productivity costs. (How easy is it to learn to use the printer? How easy is it to print your documents
correctly?)
•
Special paper costs. (Does the printer require special paper? Can recycled paper be used?)
•
Supplies costs. (What does it cost, in both expense and downtime, to replace supplies?)
•
Cost per page. It is difficult for end users to calculate the cost per page due to many variables. Therefore,
many manufacturers provide a cost per page calculation. When assessing cost per page, keep the
following in mind:
14
•
Make sure the cost per page associated with a printer’s print sample represents that sample. Some
manufacturers may quote the cost of printing in a draft mode, when the sample they give you is
printed in their best mode, which requires more toner or ink.
•
Take note of whether special paper is required for the print sample.
•
Make sure all the supplies are included in the cost per page calculation and not hidden as service
items. Also, remember that supplies used during routine cleaning and warm-up cycles are not always
included in the supply’s yield, which directly affects cost.
•
Watch for other hidden costs (such as unusable output, which wastes toner).
Total cost of ownership
Print quality
Produce professionallooking documents with
ease.
There are many different factors to consider when evaluating the overall quality of a printer’s output. Print
quality involves more than the number of dots per inch (dpi) that the product places on a page; a higher dpi
does not necessarily mean better print quality.
High-quality output
The HP LaserJet P2050 Printer series delivers industry-leading print quality with HP FastRes 1200 (1200 dpi
quality), HP ProRes 1200, and Resolution Enhancement technology (REt).
HP FastRes 1200 is the printer’s default setting. It provides 1200 dpi equivalent quality at full engine speed.
HP FastRes gives you professional print quality that rivals that of competitor’s higher resolution products, without
the performance penalties. HP FastRes 1200 can represent each dot space as one of four different levels of
black, similar to true 1200 dpi. However, HP FastRes uses only one-half as much RAM to store information for
each dot space. This means smaller file sizes, which translates to reduced memory requirements, less network
traffic, and faster image processing.
HP ProRes 1200 provides the highest quality text and image quality for those who require the highest resolution.
Produce professional black-and-white documents with clear, sharp text characters; extremely fine, precise line
placement; and hiqh-quality images with smooth grayscales and deep blacks.
State-of-the-art HP print cartridges and paper
The included all-in-one HP LaserJet black print cartridge with precisely engineered HP toner delivers consistently
outstanding print quality and high speeds for a wide range of media. Our cartridges are designed to deliver
quality and reliability over the life of each print cartridge, and from cartridge to cartridge. You refresh the
printer with every Original HP LaserJet print cartridge, ensuring crisp, sharp text and lines every time you print.
HP printers, Original HP toner and a wide range of HP business communication and everyday papers are
designed and tested together for optimal results.
Ensured print quality with HP testing
Prior to its introduction, a new HP LaserJet printer undergoes rigorous testing to ensure that it provides consistent
high-quality output. Tests are performed with a large sample of products through each step of the design
process, to be certain that the printer measures up to HP standards. Throughout this testing, we discover and
resolve any issues that would compromise output quality. The result is a solid, reliable product that produces
consistent output throughout its life and the life of its supplies.

Evaluating print quality
Printing samples
It is important to test files like those that are printed in your workplace. For this section, you may want to use
the samples you created for evaluating performance (see “Creating samples“ on page 8).
Viewing samples
Individuals may perceive print quality differently. HP
strongly suggests that you have several people evaluate
your sample documents, in the same environment, with
a consistent light source. Have them vote on the
samples that they like by listing them in order from the
best to the worst. Allow each person to rate the samples
independently and then record the results. Also, have
each person establish a “cut line” for acceptable print
quality for the end-user environment. This process is
referred to as psychometric testing and should be
performed on all of the sample documents that you are
using to evaluate text, graphics, and image quality.
Look for the following characteristics:
•
Text should be dark, solid black, without hollow
spots.
•
Edges of text and graphics should be crisp and
smooth.
•
There should be little or no toner scattered on the
non-printed areas of the paper.
•
Solid fills should be uniform and should not appear
glossy.
•
There should be no banding across graphics or
images.
•
Images should be clear and sharp, without
graininess.
•
Images should look natural and realistic.

Reliability
Depend on this HP LaserJet
printer to work, perform,
and last.
The HP LaserJet P2050 Printer series has the same industry-renowned HP LaserJet reliability that businesses have
come to expect from HP. If you ever do need service and support, HP’s Customer Care is one of the best. By
being certain of a maximum uptime, you’ll boost productivity and end frustration.
HP Smart Printing technology
Original HP LaserJet print cartridges with Smart Printing Technology deliver consistent, professional quality and
reliable, trouble-free printing. The intelligence built into HP supplies enhances communication between the
cartridge and printer and eliminates downtime with automatic supply alerts and easy online reordering with
HP SureSupply.5 The cartridge continually makes automated adjustments to optimize print quality and
reliability—giving users greater confidence and satisfaction.
Effortless legacy printing
Printing compatibility is an essential part of reducing costs and maintaining productivity. HP’s printing software
ensures that legacy jobs still print accurately. And because a networked HP LaserJet P2050 Printer series can be
supported and managed using your HP Web Jetadmin or HP Easy Printer Care software, it provides an ideal
complement to your existing HP printing infrastructure.1 For details, see “Productivity tools and services“ on
page 6.
Reliability matters
•
The HP LaserJet P2050 Printer series has HP’s legendary reliability and ruggedness. With a recommended
monthly page volume of 750 to 3,000 pages, this device is built to stand up to the demands of today’s
fast-paced business environment and keeps intervention rates low. 7
•
HP conducts extensive testing, printing millions of test pages with a variety of applications and file types, in
multiple environments, with different media types.
•
The product comes standard with a one-year, return to HP or HP authorized service center warranty.
Excellent HP support
HP Customer Care includes all of HP’s support programs and technologies, keeping commercial customers,
small businesses, and individual consumers up and running. HP Customer Care offers full-service support
through a broad range of services, including setup and installation, warranty upgrades, troubleshooting tools,
repair and exchange services, phone and Web support, software updates, and self-maintenance services. For
more information, see “Appendix A—HP Support Services” on page 21.
The HP Customer Care web site (www.hp.com/go/support) provides customers with free, one-stop access to
technical support for more than 600 HP products, including personal computers, printers, and imaging
products. HP Customer Care call centers also provide technical support from numerous call centers worldwide.
Reliability
17
Evaluating reliability
At HP, we typically test multiple devices in various environmental conditions to evaluate engine reliability.
We run the devices to engine life and record the supplies’ life, jam rate, and misfeed rate, continually
improving each new generation of HP products.
This kind of extensive, long-term testing is beyond the limits of most companies’ resources; however, it is
possible to estimate their printer’s engine reliability. One option is to compare other manufacturers’ lifetime
duty-cycle ratings, base warranty (make sure it is at least one-year), and three-year warranty costs. When
comparing the HP LaserJet P2050 Printer series with printers from other manufacturers, consider the
following:
•
Will the printer print legacy print jobs correctly?
•
Will the printer perform consistently under various environmental conditions?
•
After a few thousand pages, is the print quality the same as it was out of the box?
•
How easy is it to maintain and calibrate the printer?
•
When connected to a network, does the printer print correctly every time?
•
What is the quality of customer support?
18
Reliability
Environmental responsibility
Minimize your impact with
an environmentally
conscious printer.
As one of the world’s largest consumer IT companies, a leading IT supplier to small and medium-size businesses,
and a leader in enterprise computing, HP’s largest impact on the environment is through its products. The
environmental performance of products is largely determined at the design stage. HP’s Design for the
Environment initiative is driving improvements at every stage in the product lifecycle—helping reduce the
amount of energy, paper, packaging, and materials used at HP and by our customers. Through intelligent
design, we can reduce the environmental impact of our products, and of our customers.
Reduces costs
Reduce the cost of power, waste, and asset disposal with energy-efficient HP solutions.
•
Cut paper consumption and save money with automatic two-sided printing. The printer also supports
100 percent recycled paper. Product packaging is 100 percent recyclable.
•
Be ready to print in seconds: Instant-on Technology in HP LaserJet devices provides up to 50 percent energy
savings over traditional fusing while providing a first page-out in seconds—nearly twice as fast as
competitive products without this technology. HP estimates that for our monochrome LaserJet products alone,
Instant-on Technology has reduced CO2 emissions by over 5.25 million tons to date—the equivalent of
removing 1.1 million cars from the road for one year. 8
•
Get added value with an environmentally conscious printer. The HP LaserJet P2050 Printer series is
designed with reduced energy consumption, noise levels, and chemical emissions and meets the new
requirements of the ENERGY STAR® program. The printer automatically reduces power consumption after a
designated period of inactivity and requires less than 1 watt of power in Off mode.
•
Use less electricity. With HP Web Jetadmin, you can remotely schedule sleep and wake-up modes or
automatically turn off devices on nights and weekends.
•
Reduce noise pollution in your office with Quiet mode—a drive mode with reduced operation noise,
whatever print mode is selected. When Quiet mode is selected from the print driver, the printer operates at
half speed.
•
Save toner with EconoMode to use less toner per page. Printing in EconoMode produces lighter images
with lesser print quality ideal for draft or proof printing and may extend the life of the print cartridge.
•
Use less paper with N-up printing to place multiple document pages on a single printed page—perfect for
handouts and proof printing.
•
Choose your products responsibly. The EU RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive restricts the
use of certain substances (lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium and two flame retardants—PBB
and PBDE) in electronic products. HP has achieved compliance with the EU RoHS regulations for hundreds
of thousands of hardware parts, substituting new materials in many of them, while developing numerous HP
and industry standards to ensure these products meet our customer’s expectations for performance, quality,
and reliability.
Environmental responsibility
19
Simplify the management and disposal of products, and recover some of their value at end of use. The
printer is designed for long-term usage and has parts and supplies that can be returned and recycled
through HP’s take-back program. 9 Through HP Planet Partners 10—a free, convenient return and recycling
program available in more than 40 countries—you can be assured cartridges won’t end up in a landfill.
•
Saves resources
Easily recycle materials, save paper, and use fewer resources across the entire lifecycle of the printer.
•
As shown at right, HP Smart Web Printing improves printing from Web
pages. Eliminate extra pages and right-edge clipping and enjoy the ability
to combine content and print exactly what you want, without wasting
resources.
•
HP’s new low-melt toner formulation provides the following environmental
benefits:
•
Requires 15 percent less energy than conventional toners to reach its
melting point.
•
Enables a cartridge design that uses 5 percent less plastic than the
prior generation, yet prints the same number of pages.
•
Consumes 10 to 15 percent less energy per page than the prior
generation.
•
Use less paper by printing on both sides. HP Web Jetadmin and the
HP Universal Print Driver make it easy to set automatic duplex printing for
individual printers or entire fleets, allowing you to reduce the cost and
volume of paper used.
•
The printer’s paper trays feature automatic media size detection for accurate printing, saving time and
eliminating paper and toner waste.
Evaluating environmental responsibility
When evaluating environmental responsibility, consider the following:
•
Does the printer reduce power when not in use? Are there tools available to schedule automatic printer
shut-downs?
•
How much power does the printer use?
•
Does the printer ship with automatic two-sided printing? Can you set automatic two-sided printing as a
default?
•
Can you print on recycled media?
•
Is there a recycling program in place for toner cartridges?
•
Is there a product take-back program available for hardware?
