Stainless Steel
Rescue Litter
Featuring StratLoad™
Attachment Points
A complete re-thinking of the classic Stokes military-style litters, our Rescue
Litter features a full one-inch diameter top rail to make the litter easier to
handle when carried for extended periods. "Chicken wire" has been
replaced with Durathene™ netting, which eliminates cuts and
scrapes caused by broken wires. Back support is molded, highdensity polyethylene for greater durability. The steep-sided design
allows a narrower litter with the same width at the bed, which
accepts standard-sized backboards. The narrow width and rounded
ends provide greater maneuverability in tight locations. The Stainless
Steel Rescue Litter comes with four quick-attachment litter straps.

Split-Apart Rescue Litter
Featuring StratLoad™
Attachment Points
Based on a concept developed and proven by a leading rescue organization, this split-apart
litter “hinges” together at the bottom, and is then secured by integral threaded collars on the
top rail that lock into place. This design is quick and eliminates pins, which can be lost or
damaged. The litter is easy to assemble and just as easy to take apart, and comes with four
litter straps. The nested length is less than 45 in. (114 cm).

stratLoad™
Attachment Points
The patented Str-atLoad Attachment Points for our litters allow any size carabiner to
be used to attach a lifting bridle while keeping both the carabiners and the lifting
bridle on the inside of the litter’s top rail. This provides protection from abrasion
along cliff faces and building walls. The Str-atLoad feature also prevents cross gate
and side loading of carabiners and orients the direction of pull along the spine of
the carabiner, where it is strongest. Str-atLoads are 1/4 in. (6 mm) thick with a fullround radius on the inside edge, allowing the option of a soft attachment, which is
then protected by the top railing. Str-atLoads are now standard on all stainless and
titanium litters.

Disaster Response Litter
A medium-duty, disaster response litter designed for durability
and versatility, featuring unique tubular runner rails that
span the full length of the litter along the bottom. These
provide a very strong, durable base, making it far
more difficult to damage during regular use compared
to other baskets that simply use a flat bar. A very
cost-effective alternative to the more heavy-duty
stainless steel models, this powder-coated steel litter
with Durathene™ netting meets the needs of many users
who only use litters occasionally, or who are on very limited
budgets for rescue equipment. Our Disaster Response Litter
comes in black with four litter straps. The narrower, confined
space model fits through tight openings.

Traverse Advantage Plastic Litter
Featuring a fully internal stainless steel frame
combined with a high-density polyethylene
plastic shell that protects the patient and
provides a smooth bottom surface for sliding,
this litter’s frame provides a 11.1 kN (2,500-lb.)

top rail frame, leaving the second rail for tying in
the patient, has generous cutouts for carrying the
litter. The large 7/8 in. (22 mm) diameter top rail
is comfortable on the hands.
A closed-cell foam patient
pad prevents absorption of
fluids, and is resistant to the
harshest cleaning agents.

Litter Shield Plus
Taller Profile with a Universal Mounting Bracket
USA
Protect your patient from further trauma during litter evacuations and carry-outs with our
Litter Shield Plus. Since its inception, this device has made several “saves” by deflecting
falling rocks away from patients’ heads. The shield not only provides protection from
falling rocks and debris, but also protects against inclement weather and brush
without compromising access to and visibility of the patient’s head. The Litter Shield
Plus is taller so it provides more room for a patient on a backboard or litter insert,
and helps to reduce the “closed-in” feeling experienced by some patients. The mounting bracket eliminates the need for a railing clamp on the litter and allows the shield to fit
most litters. Molded of thick Lexan®, the Litter Shield Plus offers impact resistance with the
clarity and weatherability of glass. Patient comfort is increased due to the reduced need for other
head and face protective equipment.

For many years the accepted method for securing a patient in a litter was improvised
internal and external lashings using one-inch tubular web. Critical patient-packaging
time could be lost and often the finished lashing was either too tight or too loose.
Looking for a quicker and more secure way, we developed our Patient Tie-In System
after testing a variety of prototypes in CMC Rescue School classes. The refined product
weighs less, is quick and secure, and can be easily adjusted to meet the patient’s
requirements for comfort. The available pelvic harness supports the patient’s weight
when the litter is placed in a head-up position. Available for a one-piece or two-piece
litter and can be used with the pelvic harness system or for a patient on a backboard.
Color-coded web helps keep the system organized.

Confined spaces and narrow openings require the litter to be rigged with the patient held vertically in order
to fit, and these openings usually end with a 90-degree transition. The Vertical-Lift Litter Harness eases the
transition over an edge when a high anchor point is not available, such as a parapet roof, out a window, off
a tank top, or over a handrail. This reduces the manpower requirements, improves patient care and reduces
risk. A unique spreader bar allows the litter to pivot between the side straps as the head of the litter clears
the edge. Constructed of 26.7 kN (6,000 lbf.) one-inch flat web for high strength and light weight, the
Vertical-Lift Litter Harness features buckles for easy adjustment and comes with a Delta Quick Link.

Compact storage, ease of use, and flexibility in means of transport have
made the Sked stretcher popular with fire departments, rescue squads,

HMD Sked ® Stretcher
A variation of the classic Sked Stretcher design, the Mass Casualty—Haz-Mat Decontaminable (HMD) Sked
Stretcher is intended for ease of use in mass casualty or hazardous material incidents.
Mass Casualty Incidents: The HMD Sked can be stored flat on pallets with the straps packaged
separately, which allows quick movement of a large number of stretchers to an incident with a large
number of patients, such as a plane crash or explosion. Pallets of 50 to 200 HMD stretchers can be
moved by truck or airlifted by helicopter to facilitate the rapid movement of patients.
Haz-Mat Incidents: Doing anything in Level A and B
protective suits is difficult. The HMD Sked allows a patient
or a downed rescuer to be quickly rolled onto the stretcher
and pulled out of the hot zone by rescuers a rope length
away. Polypropylene straps are resistant to chemicals
and the two-inch side-release buckles are easy to
operate even with thick gloves.

Cearley Rescue Strap ®
A CMC Exclusive
Rick Cearley, a retired senior
helicopter pilot for the
Los Angeles County Fire
Department and inventor
of the LSP Cinch Rescue

for a product to rapidly
secure a victim under
difficult conditions, such as swiftwater
rescues. Despite its simple appearance, this Cearley original design

why You Need a rescue strap
All firefighters should consider carrying a Cearley Rescue
Strap in their turnout because of its many applications to
quickly secure a downed firefighter who must be dragged,
lifted, or lowered. It can also be used as a hasty chest harness to pluck victims from above-ground windows or during
swiftwater operations, or even as an emergency harness for
self-rescue from upper floors. It has proven itself with our
department when lives depend on quick and simple securing
of victims for evacuation.

The Cinch Rescue Collar allows
a victim to enter the collar from
either side. When loaded, the
victim’s weight releases the
connector, allowing the collar to
“cinch” around the victim. Used
for many years by helicopter
crews in swiftwater or bluewater
rescues, the Cinch Rescue Collar
can also be deployed from land or
watercraft. As a flotation device,
the Cinch can be used as a life

The Pick-off rescue
Not all subjects are injured or require immobilization and
transport in a litter, so a rappel-based rescue can often be
used. One common rappel-based rescue involves transferring
the subject onto the rescuer’s descender. This is usually
referred to as a pick-off. Hands-on experience practicing
and teaching this technique led to the development of our
Pick-Off Strap as a more efficient way of quickly securing a
subject, then transferring his or her weight.
Today’s CMC Rescue School classes teach team-based skills,
and the pick-off rescue now commonly employs both a main
line and a belay line. The Pick-Off Strap continues to be used
for quick attachment to the subject, and for positioning
the subject above the rescuer for the best control.
Similar product ideas that followed the Pick-Off Strap
include our Adjustable Litter Strap, which provides a more
efficient tender tie-in for low-angle evacuations, and our
Load Release Strap. The Load Release Strap is a compact,
simple, easy-to-rig way to release the load on the ratchet
of the main line or a loaded belay line.
These are just a few of the original CMC designs that have
been widely adopted by rescuers around the world.

CMC created the Pick-Off Strap so that a rescuer could quickly connect to the victim and then adjust the strap to the desired length. Our
Pick-Off Strap works well for positioning the victim for a lowering or rappel-based pick-off, or for an assisted rappel. We added a loop
to the end for a more positive grip when pulling to adjust. Our strong 1-3/4 in. web improves long-term durability, especially where the
strap threads through the buckle. Depending on how the buckle is loaded, it will begin to slip between 15-20 kN (3,500-4,500 lbf.). Tying
off the buckle will increase the strength. The integrated Web Keeper™ allows the strap to be carried on a gear sling or harness without
tangling or getting caught.

Certification is based on testing in the basket configuration. The Load Release Strap is designed to be used in the end-to-end configuration. While the wraps
were done the same for each sample, they appear to have introduced some variability into the results such that the 3 approach to calculating a statistical
MBS may not be appropriate. The results for the five samples tested ranged from 27.5 kN (6,200 lbf.) to 48.5 kN (10,900 lbf.).
Adjustable Litter Strap
USA
We developed the Adjustable Litter Strap because it allows minor adjustments to be made while the litter is being
carried. Quickly releasing the buckle extends the strap, preventing the rescuer from being pulled down with the
litter. Sewn loop strength exceeds 36 kN (8,093 lbf.). The buckle performs the same as our Pick-Off Strap, see

Outstanding hand protection meets dexterity in our Rappel Gloves. Wear
them to tie knots and work with hardware, set up a system or to rappel.
Pittard’s Armor-Tan leather and unique Kevlar® brand fiber stitching
combine for unparalleled durability. A double layer at the thumb web
protects hands when rappelling, and the wear-resistant double palm
guards against heat, moisture, cold, and abrasion. Its second anatomically segmented layer eases grip fatigue. The back is equally detailed:
spandex ventilates and delivers flexibility and comfort, while elastic at
the wrist provides a secure fit. When not in use, these gloves can hang
on harness gear loops using the carabiner loops sewn into the wrist.

NEW!
These new Super Plasma hi-tech helmets have been specifically designed for
professional rescue and work-at-height applications. They are lightweight, compact,
comfortable and well-ventilated with 10 air intakes, equipped with protective
aluminum anti-intrusion grilles to deflect debris. The helmets’ outer shell is made of
high-density ABS plastic and designed to withstand significant impact from above or
the side. The four fastening points of the chinstrap are designed to decrease the risk
of helmet loss in case of an impact during a fall (breaking strength of more than 50
daN or 112.4 lbf.). Soft polyethylene side retractors regulate length of the straps, with
a special red-colored ring on one for fastening the helmet to a harness. The advanced
shape of the inner shell offers improved durability and better adaptation to all head
sizes. An optional visor is available for added face protection. Made in Italy.

Spyderco Assist I Knife
Designed for emergency/fire/rescue professionals who rely on their knives to function flawlessly under
pressure, the Assist features a patented VG-10 blunt-tipped blade, with a toothy 80% SpyderEdge
for aggressively cutting seatbelts and fibrous material. The last inch of the tip is PlainEdge for
detailed cutting. The Cobra Hood positions the thumb directly over the hole for quick blade
deployment, and then doubles as a leveraging platform for the thumb. The wavy pattern cut from
the top of the blade and along the inside of the handle lets you place a piece of rope (between
the half-open blade and handle) and scissor the blade shut. This is especially convenient for
cutting rope in and around flesh without having to fully open/expose the knife’s blade. In the
closed position, squeeze the blade deeper into the handle and a retractable carbide tip protrudes from the base for breaking glass. Outlined in safety
orange on the handle’s spine is a shrill and attention-pitched survival whistle. Carries left-/right-handed, tip-up by means of a tension wire clip.

It took a firefighter with a genius for knife design to conceive this feature-rich rescue

window punch, lanyard hole, and an oversized thumb stud for easy opening. The
knife has larger, beefier features and mechanisms built-in, so that it can be used
while wearing turnout gloves. It has a heavy-duty 440A stainless steel blade with an

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND QUALITY ASSURANCE
At CMC, We Never Stop Testing
CMC Rescue’s instructors and
engineers are always asking
"what would happen if…?”
We also get a lot of what-if questions
from Rescue School students and
customers. Since we’re committed to
answering as many of them as possible,
we’ve invested in extensive product
testing equipment. Our test tower allows
us to conduct product performance tests,
such as the NFPA harness static test and
drop test. We are also able to test belay
and anchor systems with dynamic or
static loading. As we experiment with
new design ideas and different rescue
systems, we’re able to see what works
best from a laboratory perspective.
Then, through field trials and feedback
from students in our Rescue School,
we incorporate real-world input to
create the best products possible.
A recent addition to the CMC Rescue
Test Lab is this vertical hydraulic test ram.
It’s shown here testing the strength of
the attachment points on the CMC
Stainless Steel Rescue Litter.
www.cmcrescue.com
173
The CMC Rescue Test Lab
Our commitment to developing
the highest-quality equipment
means we’re always testing new
ideas to learn what works…
and what doesn’t.
For many years we’ve used our
custom-built drop tower and hydraulic
tensile test equipment to subject our
products to worst-case scenarios to
ensure that they’ll survive far more
than anything our customers expect.
In our effort to continuously improve
our capabilities, we’ve recently added
new tools to our test lab. They include
a vertical hydraulic test ram with the
capacity to test large items, including
litters, both horizontally and vertically,
and a high-speed video camera that
allows us to capture details of not just
where a product fails, but how it fails,
so we know where improvements can
be made.
CMC's high-speed video camera captures thousands of images per second to help us define areas of weakness
while developing products. These photos were taken during the testing of an early hardware prototype.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT CMC RESCUE
How the Best Rescue Products on the Market
CMC Rescue was founded in 1978 by James Frank, a member of the all-volunteer Los Padres
Search and Rescue Team. The company was born out of a need for highly specialized rescue
equipment that, at the time, did not exist. Jim knew that when rescuers had to rappel down
steep cliffs to rescue fall victims, their equipment had to be stable, secure, and strong enough
to support the weight of the victim, a litter, and the rescuers. Virtually the only gear available
then was made for sport climbing and caving. There was no such thing as a rescue harness.
From this need came the first CMC Rescue Harness.
This CMC Rescue Harness from
the early 1980s is still on the job today.
Jim used his engineering background to develop
several products that were soon proven in the
field. Using his own tests and feedback from
other early users, he made improvements as the
demand for larger quantities and other rescuespecific products grew.
In 1982, CMC started its own manufacturing
division when it couldn't locate specialized
pieces of equipment the company felt should
be available to rescuers. It takes much more
than a sewing machine and material to produce
life-support products; it requires highly trained personnel and a quality-based inspection
program backed by sound design and engineering. Today, CMC manufactures state-of-the-art
harnesses, straps, packs, and belts at its Santa Barbara, California, facility.
CMC's ongoing testing program is key to the quality of its products. In order to know how to
make products stronger, you have to break them. In order to make products perform better,
you have to use them. CMC's rigorous program includes in-house testing, field testing by
instructors and engineering staff, and additional test support from key manufacturers. In-house
test results are verified through independent laboratories and certification organizations.
Expertise in rescue equipment and its use naturally led the company to begin teaching
rescue techniques. In the early 1980s, CMC developed one of the first training curriculums
for teaching mountain rescue skills to other rescue services. In the ensuing years, hands-on
training has become one of CMC Rescue School’s trademarks.
As a leading designer, manufacturer, worldwide distributor of rescue equipment, and respected
emergency-response educator, CMC Rescue’s guiding principles remain unchanged: To uphold
the highest ethical and technical standards, focus on the needs of customers, and provide a
positive and challenging work environment that respects the contribution of every employee.
Over the decades, employees have become valuable contributors to the company. Each of us
understands that the products CMC designs, makes, or selects support firefighters, rangers,
police officers, and other professionals when they’re putting their lives on the line to save others.
When it was time to address the long-term sustainability of our company, it was the dedication
and quality of our employees that led to the decision in 2010 to become an employee-owned
company. Every day, the company continues to earn its reputation for service and for products
that outperform expectations. CMC’s continued ISO 9001 Certification underscores our
dedication to this goal. CMC’s resources and experience, combined with our commitment to
focus on the needs of professional users, has put the company in a unique position to support
the specialized needs of the rescue community—now and for many years to come.
cmc’s Founder’s story
More than 30 years ago, I was told that a
carabiner with a brake bar was no longer
considered safe for rope rescue and that
I should get a Russ Anderson Figure 8
Descender. Such a rescue-specific item
was not available at climbing shops, and
I learned that several had to be ordered
at a time. This looked like a business
opportunity, so I bought six with the
intention of selling the other five. Russ'
oversized Figure 8s were machined out of
plate aluminum and worked for lowering
systems. The rope we used was a nylon
7/16-inch, three-strand laid rope called
Goldline. Most of our gear was recreational
climbing or caving equipment. Carabiners
were aluminum and rock-climbing
harnesses were considered the
state-of-the-art. There have been many
changes in the last 33 years. Rescuespecific products were introduced, and
the NFPA Standard 1983 was developed to
provide consistency in testing and labeling.
Today we've started to see descenders that
automatically stop and lock themselves,
harnesses made from high-tech materials
for comfort and strength, carabiners with
a variety of safety locking systems, and
specialized communication equipment to
meet the changing needs of our rescuers.

From cmc’s President/ceo
I’ve watched CMC grow from the earliest
days until now, and I’m amazed at how
things have changed—and how they have
managed to stay the same. Starting out
as a mail-order business with a photocopied catalog, CMC has refined itself

we now demonstrate an impressive level
of maturity and professionalism that was
unimaginable back in the 1970s. All this
change has brought with it the benefits of
having outstanding skilled workers in every
discipline, making our business stronger
and more capable than ever before.
What hasn’t changed is the dedication to
helping those who help others in need. The
original recipe of technical knowhow, using
the products we make and sell, standing
behind everything we do, and providing a
high-quality work experience for employees
is still alive and well at CMC. I am honored

CMC Rescue, Inc. warrants to the original purchaser that CMC manufactured products will be
free from defects in materials and workmanship. This express warranty and all implied warranties
imposed by law are limited to one-year duration from the date of original purchase. In the event
of such a defect during the warranty period, CMC agrees, at its option, to repair or replace the

allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts nor the exclusion or limitation of incidental
or consequential damages, so the above limitations may not apply to you.
