Summary of Installation Procedure
The recommended procedure for installing the controller in a
server depends on whether the server has been configured
and, if not, whether the server can self-configure during its first
power up. (To determine whether a server is autoconfigurable,
refer to the server-specific setup and installation guide.)
The following sections summarize the recommended procedures
for typical installation scenarios. For more details of any
procedure, refer to the controller user guide on the
Documentation CD.
Unused Autoconfigurable Server
Previously Configured Server
1. Install the controller hardware.
1. Back up any data on the system. (This step is required if
you are moving drives from a non-array controller to a
Smart Array controller.)
2. Install physical drives, if necessary.
The number of drives in the server determines the RAID
level that is autoconfigured when the server is powered up
(next step). For details, refer to the server-specific setup
and installation guide or the HP ROM-Based Setup Utility
User Guide.
2. Update the system firmware.
3. If the new controller is to be the boot device, install the
device drivers for the operating system. Otherwise,
continue with step 4.
IMPORTANT: The expansion module on the SA6404
controller cannot be used as a boot device.
3. Power up the server. The autoconfiguration process runs.

8. Update the Management Agents, if new versions
are available.
Create and format additional logical drives if desired.
If the controller is not going to be the boot device, install
the device drivers for the operating system. Otherwise,
continue with the next step.
Unused Non-Autoconfigurable Server
9. Create and format additional logical drives if desired.
1. Install the controller hardware.
10. If migrating from a non-array controller, restore data from
the backup.
2. Update the system firmware.
3. Update the controller firmware.
4. Configure the server.
