13
2014 TUNDRA INTRODUCTION
4. TUNDRA Stamp
a. On tailgate for bold, chiseled look
b. Coordinates with lower accent line on tailgate to
widen look of rear end
c. Example of quick feedback mechanism and
North American self-reliance:
1) Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), CALTY Design, and
Toyota Technical Center (TTC) staff formed Tiger
Team when developing 2nd gen Tundra
2) Inspired by “TOYOTA” stamping used on early
Toyota trucks, Tiger Team brainstormed idea to
add “Tundra” stamping to tailgate
3) TTC and TMM found defects in early prototype
“Tundra” stamping
4) Tiger Team identified competitors that used
similar stamping methods
5) TTC and TMM studied other manufacturers
stamping results and found wrinkles and
imperfections
6) Instead of dismissing idea and compromising
final design, CALTY Designers, TTC engineers,
and TMM (manufacturing) developed a clever
solution: reduce radiuses on edge of logo for a
more consistent, high-quality stamping without
losing the aggressive look
a) Successful development results are evident
in depth of final stamping, including both
aggressive bends in outside edges of
lettering without distorting smoothness of
sheet metal around the logo on the tailgate,
and the flushness of the centers of the U, N,
D, R, and the A with the surrounding panel.
14

trucks with BSM with RCTA
c. Separate 4/7 pin trailer wire connectors
relocated to left of license plate on 4.6L V8 with
tow hitch and all 5.7L V8
d. License plate lights illuminate pin connector
1) Improves departure angle, decreases chance of
damage while off-roading
e. Aids in towing up to 5,000 lbs.

4. Toyota Directed Ignition (TDI) System
27
2014 TUNDRA INTRODUCTION
5. Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS)
a. Helps engine “breathe” more efficiently at
different RPMs
b. Utilizes butterfly valves in the intake manifold to
switch intake runner length, based on RPM and
throttle angle
1) Low RPM: Intake runners are longer, helping to
create torque
2) High RPM: Intake is shorted, allowing engine to
“breathe” quicker and create horsepower
C. Transmission
1. 6-speed Super-Intelligent Electronically
controlled Automatic Transmission
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.
Standard on 5.7L and 4.6L V8 engines
Designed to respond more quickly to driver input
Size of a 5-speed, but with a wider gear ratio
Multiplies torque to wheels
Includes a high capacity torque converter
2. 5-speed ECT-i Automatic Transmission
a. Standard on 4.0L V6 engine
3. Sequential Shift Mode Functionality
a. Allows drivers to manually hold and shift
between gears
b. Activated by shifting into “S” position on the shift
gate
4. AI (Artificial Intelligence)-SHIFT Control
a. Automatically changes shift patterns in response
to road conditions and the driver’s intentions,
which enhances driving comfort
5. Lock-Up Timing Control
a. Activates torque-converter lock-up in 4th, 5th, and
6th gear
b. Reduces converter slippage

drivetrain loss, and increases fuel economy
28
2014 TUNDRA INTRODUCTION
6. Flex Lock-Up Control
a. Increases operating RPM range of the lock-up
clutch
b. Operates whenever accelerator pedal is
released

the transmission in lower gears for enhanced
power, improved engine braking performance,
and prevention of repeated gear changes
during towing
2. Uphill/Downhill Control
a. Uphill: Holds lower gears to maintain momentum
b. Downhill: Earlier downshifts for engine braking
and maintaining a stable vehicle speed
3. Shift Schedule Control
a. Holds gears longer before upshifts/downshifts
occur
4. Wide Open Throttle Shift Schedule Control
a. Optimizes upshift timing and maximizes throttle
input
E. Steering

4WD)
2) Includes Bilstein’s iconic yellow-colored gascharged mono-tube shock absorbers
2. Rear: Rigid-Axle, Leaf Spring
a. Shock absorbers have been retuned
1) Twin-Tube dampers (On-Road only, single-tube
on Off-Road) increase dampening in low- to midspeed range, helping to provide excellent ride
comfort
2) Reduced friction in struts
b. Shocks mounted outside rear frame rails in a
staggered configuration
1) Mounting shocks outside frame rail ensures
vehicle control and allows vehicle to better
handle load changes
2) Staggered mounted shocks help dampen
drivetrain torsional forces (i.e., helps prevent axle
hop)
c. Leaf springs mounted in a toed-out, trapezoidal
configuration
1) Distance between front leaf spring mounting
points is larger than the distance between the
rear leaf spring mounting points
2) Resistance to lateral axle movement adds rigidity
and strength
30
2014 TUNDRA INTRODUCTION
d. Off-Road Package

with standard Tow Package)
I. Traction Control Systems
1. Automatic Limited-Slip Differential
a. 2WD (rear axle), brake-based traction control
system
b. Allows engine power but uses braking to slow
slipping tires, along with transferring power
across the axle to wheel with traction
31
2014 TUNDRA INTRODUCTION
2. A-TRAC: Active Traction Control
a. 4WD traction control system
b. Same principle as Auto LSD, but can be used
when Auto LSD is not enough
1) Same concept, but is a 4WD system using brake
force to limit spinning and move power around
the four wheels
c. Engine power is allowed, but independent
braking force is spent to spinning tires, with
transferred power to wheels with traction
d. Uses existing braking system for traction (as
opposed to another driveline system)
J. Frame
1. TripleTech™ Frame Technology
a. Toyota combines three frame-member types into
a single design called TripleTech™
b. Frame design details:
1) Fully boxed up front to allow for precise handling
2) Reinforced C-channel with rolled lip under cab to
balance torsional rigidity and contribute to weight
savings
3) Open C design under bed is lighter, allows for
flexibility under maximum load (fully boxed
frames cannot flex to absorb energy, and can be
permanently distorted or cracked under
maximum load), and helps absorb vibration and
harshness while minimizing transference to the
cab
c. Made with high-tensile strength steel for a rigid,
flexible frame
1) Design concept similar to that of commercial
aircraft wings
d. Maximizes payload, reduces excess weight,
controls energy absorption during an accident
e. Design concept common on most commercial
and ¾ / 1-ton vehicles
