Editing
The Sony ES-3 EditStation
™ system is an extremely flexible and powerful non-linear video editing system with exceptional picture quality. Its operating interface is easy to use, allowing the user to focus totally on the creative aspects of video production, while its open architecture also supports popular third-party software for graphics, paint and effects applications.
The ES-3 is equipped with DV compression mode as standard and with uncompressed operation as an option. With this choice of operating modes, the ES-3 offers pristine image quality with virtually any video source.
This makes the ES-3 suitable for connection to VTR's ranging from Betacam SP
® and
DVCAM
™
SX
™ up to the Betacam
, MPEG IMX
™ and Digital
BETACAM™ formats. A wide variety of Digital I/O's including
SDI, SDTI (QSDI
™
) and i.LINK
™
(DV I/O) also play a vital role in keeping picture quality at its best.
Tight project time scales are no longer an issue with the ES-3.
The optional ES-3 accelerator board adopts advanced and unique technology to keep rendering time to a minimum – even for complex projects with many layers.
Its high performance, yet low cost, makes the ES-3 an ideal editing system for a wide variety of applications where creativity and ease of use are priorities.
Powerful
Production Tools
Two Compression Modes
The ES-3 addresses a broad spectrum of applications with its dual compression mode capability. As standard, the ES-3 offers the highly acclaimed DV compression mode to accommodate the large demands of non-linear in the DV world. When operated in this mode, Sony
“Direct Digital Link” technology is available via the SDTI
(QSDI) and i.LINK (DV I/O) interfaces, eliminating the signal degradation that usually occurs due to repeated recompression between DVCAM/DV VTR's and hard drives.
By installing the ESBK-3032 Uncompressed option, the
ES-3 takes a quantum leap in picture quality by allowing uncompressed operation. This capability makes the
ES-3 suitable for editing sources from VTR's ranging from Betacam SP and Betacam SX up to MPEG IMX and Digital BETACAM.
Since SDI capability can be added to the ES-3 by installing the ESBK-3031 SDI/SDTI option, signals from such sources are processed with minimum quality loss.
Another unique advantage of the ES-3's dual compression mode capability is that a single project file can be shared between the two modes. In high-end applications, this allows the operator to perform off-line editing in DV mode and then use this project data for on-line editing in uncompressed mode on the same or different system.
* The SDTI (Serial Data Transport Interface) is defined as SMPTE 305M.
The SDTI (QSDI) is the DV signal interface which is defined as SMPTE 322M
* i.LINK stands for IEEE1394 – 1995 standards and their revisions. is the logo for products that integrate i.LINK
Multiple I/O's
The ES-3 is equipped with composite, S-Video, Y/R-Y/B-Y component and i.LINK
(DV I/O) input/output capability as standard. SDTI (QSDI) and SDI I/O's are also available by installing the ESBK-3031 SDI/SDTI option. This means that the ES-3 is capable of supporting almost every video signal format I/O currently available in the market.
The ES-3 is special in that these I/O's are all available to the operator at the same time. Since I/O boards do not have to be swapped depending on the source type, this becomes extremely useful when the operator must digitise from various sources or when on-line and off-line editing must be performed on the same system.
ESBK-7011 Control Panel
As well as controlling non-linear functions with a traditional keyboard and mouse via the GUI, the operator can use the dedicated-style Sony ESBK-7011 Control
Panel. Familiar linear operational techniques such as jog/shuttle control, effects transition and audio fading can be combined with the convenience of non-linear editing to achieve more intuitive operation. The keys on the control panel are fully user assignable, allowing the operator to configure the control panel functions as required.
High Speed Rendering
Waiting for effect rendering has always been of great concern to non-linear operators working to tight time scales.
The ES-3 provides a most effective solution by allowing the addition of an accelerator board that uses unique and advanced processing technologies.
With the optional ESBK-3021 Accelerator board installed, the processing time of complex effects is dramatically reduced to a level where rendering time no longer becomes a concern. High-speed rendering is performed on such ES-3 effects as the Motion FX, Color FX, Wipe FX and
Filter FX.
The ESBK-3021 is very unique in that it provides true background rendering of unlimited video layers while permitting the editing process to continue. This is achieved by utilising six advanced DSP
(Digital Signal Processing) chips to complete the rendering independently from the main CPU. Only the accelerator board performs the effect rendering, leaving the CPU free to handle other editing tasks.
With the ESBK-3021, the accelerated rendering is applied to all layers simultaneously frame-by-frame, not layer-by-layer.
This allows the rendered portion of the effect to be played back even before the entire effect is rendered (Partial Preview)
* When the ES-3 is used in DV mode, basic effects such as dissolve and wipes are available in real-time, regardless of whether the ESBK-3021 is installed.
* When using the ES-3 in uncompressed mode, the installation of the ESBK-3021 is strongly recommended due to the higher throughput required for uncompressed operation
ClipLink™ Operation
(DVCAM only)
The unique Sony ClipLink operation extends editing efficiency throughout the digital production process. While shooting with the Sony DXC-D35/DSR-1, DSR-
135P, DSR-300A-AP or DSR-500WS/WSP camcorders, all of the In/Out time code data on a source tape is stored in the CM
(Cassette Memory) of the DVCAM tape.
Representative “Index Pictures” for each shot are also recorded on the tape. The
ES-3 can create clips instantly and automatically when a tape with ClipLink data is loaded into the Sony DVCAM DSR-
1500/P, 1600/P, 1800/P, 70/P or 85/P VTR.
This can save considerable time in logging and organising clip information and dramatically streamline the ‘pre’ editing process.
