INTRODUCTION
The DAB 211L is a two band portable, stereo, DAB and FM radio, powered by batteries (not supplied) or from the mains via an AC adaptor.
PRELIMINARIES
UNPACKING
Carefully unpack the unit. If it is damaged, please return it to your nearest Tesco store for replacement. Remember to take your purchase receipt with you.
Retain the User Handbook. If you pass the unit on to a third party make sure you pass on the handbook.
We suggest you retain the packaging. If you dispose of it, do so having regard to any recycling regulations in your area.

LOCATION
Place the unit on dry stable surface away from heat and damp and where it is unlikely to fall or be knocked over.

GETTING STARTED
CONNECTING POWER
Before connecting the power, check that the mains voltage on the rating plate of the AC adaptor is the same as the voltage in your area.
• Plug the DC cord from the AC adaptor into the DC-In jack on the back of the unit.
• Plug the AC adaptor into the wall socket and switch the mains power on.
The unit is now ready for use.
NOTE:- The AC adaptor may become warm during operation
- this is normal.
FITTING BATTERIES
Your radio can also be powered by batteries for fully portable operation. Always disconnect the AC adaptor from the radio when batteries are fitted.
To fit batteries:
First, remove the battery cover.
• Press the two catches as shown below.
Next, fit four ‘D’ (or UM-1/R20) batteries into the battery compartment following the sequence below and observing battery polarity as shown. Alkaline batteries are recommended for best performance.
• Fit 2 x batteries to the left end of the battery compartment.
• Fit 1 x battery to the right end of the battery compartment.
• Fit 1 x battery into the remaining space between the fitted batteries.
• While holding the catches, lift off the battery cover.
BATTERY DISPOSAL
Dispose of used batteries with regard to the recycling regulations in your area. Do NOT short circuit batteries or throw them into water, the general rubbish or in a fire.
Weak batteries can leak and damage the radio. Replace them in good time!
• Re-fit the battery cover.
The unit is now ready to operate from battery power.

TELESCOPIC AERIAL
When using your radio, and particularly when switching on for the first time, ensure that the telescopic antenna is fully extended. This will ensure that all programs in your region are available for the initial scan.

To turn the radio on:
• Press the
Standby/On button.
The radio will switch on.
To set the radio to Standby:
• Press the
Standby/On button.
The radio will set to Standby.
INITIAL SCAN
When your radio is switched on for the first time the scanning display will be shown while the scanning process takes place:

The radio scans all usable stations (full scan) and stores them alphanumerically - 1 Radio, 2 Radio, AA Radio, AB Radio...
The initial scan will take a few minutes. After the scan, the clock will be set and the radio will play the first station in the sequence. To browse for another station, refer to the next section.
BROWSING FOR A STATION
To browse for another DAB station:
• Turn the TUNING/ENTER control clockwise to browse up
• the station list.
Turn the TUNING/ENTER control anti-clockwise to browse down the station list.
The stations in the station list will be displayed in sequence.
• Press the TUNING/ENTER control to select the station displayed.
After a short delay, the radio will tune to the station.
ADJUSTING THE VOLUME
To increase the volume:
• Turn the
VOLUME control clockwise.
The volume level will increase.
To decrease the volume:
• Turn the
VOLUME control anti-clockwise.
The volume level will decrease.
When the volume is adjusted the display will change to show the current volume setting on a bargraph.
SELECTING DAB OR FM
You can choose to listen to DAB or FM radio -
Selecting DAB or FM:
• Press the
DAB/FM button repeatedly to switch between
DAB and FM mode.

LISTENING TO FM RADIO
Your radio can also receive FM band radio stations.
To change to the FM band:
• Press the DAB/FM button to switch between DAB and
FM mode.
To auto-tune to FM stations:
• Press the
SCAN button briefly to search up the band for
• the next station.
Press and
hold the SCAN button to search down the band for the next station.
The radio will search and the tuning frequency will be displayed whilst searching.
When a usable station is detected the radio will stop tuning and play the station. If RDS data is present, the station name and scrolling radio text will be displayed. If RDS data is not present, the tuned frequency will be displayed.
To manually tune to FM stations:
• Turn the
TUNING/ENTER control clockwise to tune
• manually up the band..
Turn the
TUNING/ENTER control anti-clockwise to tune manually down the band.
Changing the FM audio mode:
You can set your radio to switch automatically between stereo and mono FM reception (auto mode) or to receive in mono only (mono mode). Setting to Mono mode may improve sound quality in areas where a weak aerial signal results in a high level of background noise.
• Whilst playing an FM radio station, press the
TUNING/
ENTER button.
The audio mode will change between Auto and Mono.
DAB & FM STATION PRESETS
DAB and FM presets
Your radio can store up to 10 of your favourite stations as presets on both the DAB and FM bands for quick recall.
To store preset 1-5

Press and
hold the number button for the preset number you want to store.
For example, press and hold the 2/7 button to store preset 2.
‘Preset Stored’ will be displayed to confirm.

• Tune to the station you want to store as a preset.

To recall a preset
• For presets 1-5, press the
number button briefly to select the preset you want. For presets 6-10, press the
SHIFT button, then press the number button briefly to select the preset you want.
The radio will re-tune and the preset number will be displayed.
DAB SCANNING
When first used, your radio scanned the DAB band for available stations. The station services found were then stored in your radio’s memory.
You can re-scan the band at any time if you move to a different area or just to refresh the stored list of available stations.
Two types of scan are available, a ‘Quick’ scan that scans only the bands available in your area and a ‘Full’ scan that scans all bands.
NOTE: On some occasions, when moving to a different area, re-scanning may not fully update the station list. In this case it may be necessary to reset your radio. (see the ‘System reset’ option on page 8).
To start a Quick scan:
• Select the DAB band.
• Press the SCAN button briefly.
To start a Full scan:

hold the SCAN button.
The scanning process will take a few minutes. The number of services found during the scan will be shown at the right side of the display.
After the scan, the radio will re-tune to the last station playing if it is available. Alternatively, you can continue to browse for another station as described on the previous page.

DAB DISPLAY MODES
DISPLAY MODE OPTIONS
The bottom line of the display can be switched to show different items of information that may be transmitted with a DAB station.
Choosing the information display:
Press the INFO button repeatedly to change the information displayed while playing a DAB radio station.
The full range of display options are shown below. Some stations may not broadcast all of these options.

PROGRAMME TYPE
MULTIPLEX NAME: DAB Digital radio stations are broadcast in multiplexes. Each multiplex is a bundle of radio stations transmitted in a single frequency. There are national and local multiplexes; local ones contain stations specific to your area. This option displays the name of the multiplex name that contains the station you are listening to.
SIGNAL STRENGTH: This setting will display a signal strength bargraph. The longer the bargraph, the stronger the signal. Setting the display to show signal strength is useful when setting up the aerial for the strongest signal.
TIME AND DATE: Time and date are updated by broadcasted information.
DLS (Dynamic Label Segment): This is a scrolling message giving real-time information - song titles, news headlines, etc.
PROGRAMME TYPE: This describes the style of the programme being broadcast.

The bottom line of the display can be switched to show different items of information that may be transmitted with an FM station.
To change the display mode:
Press the INFO button repeatedly to change the information displayed while playing an FM radio station.

HEADPHONES
There is a headphone output jack on the back panel of the radio. If headphones are connected to this socket for private listening, the speakers will cut out automatically.

The Radio will now scan the DAB broadcast stations in your area.
After reset all settings are returned to the factory defaults and any stored presets are erased.
SOFTWARE VERSION
You can display the version of software used in your radio.
This will only be necessary as an aid for technicians should your radio ever need service.
To display the software version:
• Press and hold the INFO button.
The software version will appear on the display.
TROUBLESHOOTING
No power (mains operation)
Check that the AC adaptor is connected to the DC-In jack and to mains power.
No power (battery operation)
The batteries may be exhausted. Try a new set.
No sound
Check that the volume is not set to minimum.
Poor quality radio reception
The aerial signal may not be adequate. Check that the aerial is fully extended, then try adjusting the aerial position while watching the signal strength on the bargraph. Signal strength can be displayed by tuning to a station and pressing the INFO button until the signal strength bargraph is displayed.
